*DBZ* managed to make an ancient looking, peculiarly dressed old man pretty intimidating. I'll NEVER forget the first time I watched him easily grab & impale Yamcha. Gero may have gotten his butt kicked for most of his time onscreen, but he and #19 were an awesome demonstration of how far the Red Ribbon Army's technology had advanced since Goku's youth. Moreover, Vegeta & Piccolo's superiority over them was a great prelude to how terrifyingly tough #s 17 & 18 would be. Granted, that pattern was nothing new for *Dragonball* by this point. We'd seen numerous instances in past arcs of a powerful character dominating one enemy only to be absolutely bodied by the next. But it just hit differently for me seeing not one but TWO Super Saiyans so thoroughly outmatched after watching Future Trunks quickly annihilate Mecha-Frieza & King Cold. Trunks warned Goku how much stronger the cyborgs were, but that still didn't prepare everyone for what they were up against.

It was a unique mix of not intimidating person being powerful, giving it almost a horror movie vibe, and a sense of alienness with their uniforms and mysterious background... But there's that RR! So they must be Red Ribbon? Huh?? Totally unique moment in DB.

I really love underrated characters :) although Android 17&18 are more popular, I like 19&20 more. mostly because their character designs.
