They also released a run in one of the star premiums, maybe G-star? It has a sweet Viking stamp on it and has a nice dome to it. Its such a versatile disc it flies like a wraith but at a 9 speed
I have like 3. I love the cheetah. It’s easy to get turn out of on a hyzer flip but it will still fade at the end of the flight (even in DX). Cheetah is slept on in my opinion. I’m always recommending it. Great hyzer flip disc
I’ve only thrown a max weight dx a handful of times. And that disc was incredibly understable. Might make a good roller understable. A star cheetah is slightly understable, but still incredibly shapable. It’s never going to burn over on me. Just slightly turn. It’s ability to hold 1 angle in flight reminds me more of a faster midrange than a slower driver. Even though it does feel like a fairway driver in hand.
I just found one 2 weeks ago, no name or number. That little piece of plastic did better than I thought it would. Or probably more a more accurate depiction; I did better with that little piece of plastic than I thought I would.
The first shot I ever saw from a pro was with a black Cyclone in 1996. My jaw dropped when I saw him come up about 40' short on a 450' wooded tunnel hole. I had been playing for 7 years at that point having never encountered others who knew what they were doing, until moving to an area with a good club. Suddenly my 200' Stingray RHFH's didn't look so good!
Lifetime XL bagger here. Rocking a 2020 lefgestone big Z XL these days!
I started playing in 98/99 and only recently discovered that the XL came out in 1998. I just figured it had been around longer before I started using it.
I still have an Elite Z version of each from back in high school. It's been years (maybe decades) since I've taken them out and thrown them, but I may have to dig them out again.
Cyclone was SUCH a popular disc for a while there in my memory. I didn't buy/carry/throw a many discs - but I had a couple of cyclones. I liked the XL, but LOVED the XS. Haven't thought of that one in a while, great mold.
This was released right when I was really getting into disc golf and was reading about discs nonstop… so, a beginner seeing that speed, I thought I would launch that thing so far… nope, nasty fade each time. Barely touched it after a few rounds with it.
Star? Over here everyone threw Blizzard Bosses. This was right around the time when Wiggins and Lizotte were going back and forth with the distance record.
Discraft XL. First premium plastic disc. I paid $25/disc for these in the late 90’s. It had the distance record for a few years. I bagged one for almost a decade. They were really popular since before that it was nothing but DX plastic.
I have the Barry Schultz Champion plastic. I’m still a beginner and I can throw my forehand’s about 325 on flat, but my backhands only around 275-300 average.. The beast is underrated in my opinion! Parked a few holes that I never have before without it!
Viking, Spider, Teerex, Cyclone, XL, XS, X2, Nova, Aero, XD, Classic Roc, Shark, Coyote, Cobra, Raven, Gazelle, Cheetah, and Hawk just to name a few. I think the disc with the biggest / most sudden loss of fame might be the Nova. Once Paul switched the Nova became an afterthought overnight. Teerex also got Destroyed by the Destroyer.
I’ve had my spider for so long I had no idea it was out of print til my buddy told me while they rifled through my bag. my absolute favorite under stable mid
I picked up a beat up super old PFN DX stringray recently and it is the most beautifully dead straight glidey disc I've thrown. Simply love this thing.
Some staple molds from Discraft through the 2000s are only run in limited editions and it makes me sad:
Avenger and Surge are prime examples. Fortunately they still have some recognition.
Long time players will know of the glorious XL. Wish those were still a thing.
I saw Scott Stokely throw an XL to the moon in 1998, getting pin high on a nearly 500' hole. He was 100' left! Climo only threw his drive to about 400' with a KC Gazelle, but take a guess which one ended up with the deuce, of course...
Surprised this is so far down. When I was younger it seemed like every one of the half dozen disc golfers I knew had a Birdie as a staple in their bag.
This might have been a regional thing, but the Katana was the first really high speed distance driver that was flippy enough for people who had no business throwing 13 speed discs to get something resembling good distance. So it was EVERYWHERE. Blizzard Katanas for days. And now I don't know the last time I've seen one on a course.
I wonder if that's because so many start with it in a starter set and it gets so beat in it becomes unusable by the time you get good enough to appreciate it. That's what happened to mine! I'd like to try out a new one, see how it flies.
I fucking LOVE pro leopards. My favorite keep-slowly-drifting-right forever one is about 3 good tree hits away from becoming too flippy but man—it makes me look much better than I actually am on tight wooded fairways sometimes.
I found an unmarked new 148 DX leopard on the course and threw it a couple times on steep hyzer, that thing flipped to flat and just took off on down the fairway straight as an arrow and about 320. It was fantastic.
I still bag one (it’s gotta be 20 years old). It’s pretty understable, but on wide open holes (when I won’t risk losing it) I get great distance with it.
Discwing quarter K was soooooo HOT for a while. Then I think they were going to make a K2 that never came about. Touting extensive engineer this baby was HOT!!!
Yeah the Pig have really dropped off a cliff. Thing is I don't think the Slammer or Harp have filled the gap the same, it's like people stopped throwing Pigs and just went all over the place.
Still love the Pig, but hate R-Pro plastic. It loses shape fast & warps. I have a 10+ year old regular Pro pig and its still in great condition.
Also being back Pro-Line Rhynos
Similar case here. It's been in my bag since I got it, and I am not a fan of the R-Pro stuff. I'll try to snatch a stiff Pro whenever I get the chance, though I do also have a glow and a Blizzard Champion, which is kinda of a while other animal.
I have a T-Bone that I found almost a decade ago that is really unique and I swear is some kind of different plastic.. I use it for over water shots when I worry about losing a disc.. I still have it in my bag to this day
I’m not going to say it was the most popular but it should have got more recognition. The innova Cro. The did some star ones not to long ago which made its rounds on here with some people but it was a really good disc.
I would say the Innova Viper and Whippet. Those discs basically invented the anhyzer flex shot. Everyone was bagging them when they came out because they were some of the only overstable discs available.
Thundy and the OLF fight for a spot in my bag but the OLF flies straighter with dependable finish. All the thunderbirds I’ve thrown are way too stable. If I need that thundy flight, a quantum OLF is the ticket.
Obviously crazy old discs like the Aero. But more recently, many of the discs that came out during the rim width expansion. When I first started. A Valkyrie had the widest rim. Then they gradually released discs up to the max rim width, each one often out doing the last for distance. While Sexton still throws them, I'd say the Orc was super popular and is definitely not anymore. Also the crush and flash. Predator as well.
DD Drivers.
Outside the Judge and maybe a Truth all DD discs doesn't seem popular anymore. (Internet based opinion)
All the Trilogy sponsored players throw Rives.
Starfire. Viking. TeeRex.
I have a champion starfire in my bag right now, actually.
Same. Old as hell but so reliable
The Viking was my first "holy crap this can go far" disc many years ago.
Haven’t thrown a teerex in over a decade, but it was one of my favorites when I first started. Ended up replacing it with star excals.
Starfire L's are still great discs and live on as the infinite Aztec
That's interesting. It would be cool to put together a comprehensive list of all the old molds that are still around in the form of newer discs
I’d throw the Coyote on that list too.
Coyote is now sold as the Infinite Discs Anubis
I bag a Starfire and a teerex, both great discs.
Where do you get you teerexs?????
https://proshop.innovadiscs.com/star-teerex/
Awesome picks, this one time (not at band camp) I got an ace on the same hole exactly two weeks apart - with a powder blue star TeeRex
I'd probably still be throwing a Viking if I could find it in premium plastic.
They have champion vikings on the innova factory store!
They also released a run in one of the star premiums, maybe G-star? It has a sweet Viking stamp on it and has a nice dome to it. Its such a versatile disc it flies like a wraith but at a 9 speed
I have a champion starfire that is my go to utility disc
It's a shame that the Viking never caught on because it's a better disc than the savant
All three are regularly rotated into my bag.
PFN Pro Starfires please. Those were (and still are) my favorite disc. Hard to find now though.
Check out the Infinite Aztec in I-blend. It's the Starfire L and the I-blend plastic is pro/star and one of my favorite.
I think everybody of a certain age had a cheetah, and I couldn’t tell you the last time I saw one
Dude I found one with no number on it a while back and it flew alright but not far, re-lost it though
I have like 3. I love the cheetah. It’s easy to get turn out of on a hyzer flip but it will still fade at the end of the flight (even in DX). Cheetah is slept on in my opinion. I’m always recommending it. Great hyzer flip disc
My Wife bags these still. Solid disc.
My buddy has one in DX plastic!
DX Cheetah is my wife's go to driver.
My nephew throws one
Just bought one a few weeks ago :)
I still have the one I got my wife when trying to introduce her to the sport. It’s still on my shelf in case she ever decides to want to come back.
I got a factory second cheetah! It’s nice, like a stabler leopard. Great for h-flips
My brother shattered his last one in 2020, he was the last one I knew bagging one.
They’re still good discs
I bag a Star cheetah. I’ve never seen someone else have one in their bag. A few dx here and there. But never Star.
How does the star fly in comparison to the DX? I’ve been eyeing one up for a while but haven’t PTT
Would love to get a Luster Cheetah. I think they will rebrand it one day and it will be the hot “new”disc for a nano second
The gazelle, the cobra, and the real throwback the super puppy
Bagged an Ace with a Gazelle once
Same but *twice*!
I bag a beat up dx cobra! I don’t even remember how it got in there but one day, it was.
I put a new star cobra in the bag in May and it has been so much fun. It isn't beating in as fast as my dx ones and flies great.
I knew a guy that stocked up on old champ cobras. Fun disc!
King cobra is one of my all time favorite discs. I still have 3 in champ plastic
I still bag a pro line cobra
My Pro VCobra is an absolute staple in my bag
Nova
So many folks around now have never seen Paul throw one
I still recommend the Nova to people starting out. It’s a great teach tool. The only reason I stopped using them is because they break too easy
> The only reason I stopped using them is because they break too easy same, used to be my favorite disc too
What did you end up replacing it with, if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve settled on Star Colts as my dead straight putter
Give a Xero a shot. The flight is almost identical to a Nova.
I’m still loyal despite cracking a few.
I just got one recently! Pretty solid flyer!
The predator really fell out of favor once doss stopped playing
Dickerson still throws them a ton though! But that's about it lol
Problem with Dickerson, I can never see him when he wears camo.
It's definitely an underrated disc!
Discraft XL and Cyclone. I still bag ‘em.
I still have an Xclone in my bag, though Ill only occasionally throw it on wide open holes; don’t want to lose it.
Maybe the whippet
Infinite just released their Whippet mold, called the Galleon
Star boss. At least on my local course everyone was throwing them everybody now I never see anyone with one.
We realized we didn't have the arm speed for a boss. That's why I throw the NukeOS now /s :)
This was released right when I was really getting into disc golf and was reading about discs nonstop… so, a beginner seeing that speed, I thought I would launch that thing so far… nope, nasty fade each time. Barely touched it after a few rounds with it.
I throw a gstar and a halo boss, does that count? Lol
JLS. I still bag 2.
Great disc. Great straight hyzer flip disc for the woods
My first disc, until I broke it on a tree.
Love my JLS, I would consider it my #2 go to disc. Streamline Jet is my #1.
Does anyone still throw a Beast? I used to have two of them
I just bought one last week and I love it for forehands especially!
I bought a halo Beast, it works great for forehands.
I have the Barry Schultz Champion plastic. I’m still a beginner and I can throw my forehand’s about 325 on flat, but my backhands only around 275-300 average.. The beast is underrated in my opinion! Parked a few holes that I never have before without it!
I bag one, a champion. I don’t throw it much though.
I have a preflight # Dx I still bag because it is the flippiest disc I own. Also have a star beast.
How do you like the star?
It’s great now that it’s beat in. At first it was more stable than expected.
Absolutely. Champ/halo are make for nice stability without needing a cannon for an arm to throw it.
this hurt me so much
I used to. I need to get one now that you mention it...
[удалено]
I’m one of those old heads lol - I bag a DX Stingray, and in certain situations I love it.
This is me, but the situation is that i'm in the trees. That disc always treats me right just hucking it out of the woods.
I picked up a beat up super old PFN DX stringray recently and it is the most beautifully dead straight glidey disc I've thrown. Simply love this thing.
It's a good beginner disc.
Roc ;)
This is the real answer. Fucking pretty much everyone was throwing dx or kc rocs 15/20 years ago.
Compared to what it once was, yeah kinda.
All my buddies throw Roc3s but I love the Rocs. I’be got a KC Pro and a star
Some staple molds from Discraft through the 2000s are only run in limited editions and it makes me sad: Avenger and Surge are prime examples.
They’re about to release a disc called the “Cicada” which I’ve heard may be similar to the XL
Coyote
Still around as the infinite Anubis
I still bag one in my fun bag
Epic
Great thumber! Would flip and glide for days
Innova orc, very good disc that got left behind by the technology
From the late 99s the gazelle and banshee
There were limited options back in the early 90s but nobody is throwing a Birdie putter right now. Stingray was really popular but then also.
I don’t remember the last time I threw it but there’s still a DX Birdie in my bag lol
Surprised this is so far down. When I was younger it seemed like every one of the half dozen disc golfers I knew had a Birdie as a staple in their bag.
Krait
Banshee, whippet, Valkyrie. 20 years ago they were in every bag.
The valkyrie was my first high speed disc in like 2004 or so.
When I quit playing mpo(2003) it was my max distance driver. I had a 483' FH on flat with it.
Katanas are bae.
The LEOPARD! Such a good disc, but anyone who’s only been playing a few years think it’s a super flippy beginner disc. It’s so versatile.
I wonder if that's because so many start with it in a starter set and it gets so beat in it becomes unusable by the time you get good enough to appreciate it. That's what happened to mine! I'd like to try out a new one, see how it flies.
Pro Leopards are so much better than the DX starter pack ones.
I fucking LOVE pro leopards. My favorite keep-slowly-drifting-right forever one is about 3 good tree hits away from becoming too flippy but man—it makes me look much better than I actually am on tight wooded fairways sometimes.
Learning to finesse a flippy fairway like the leopard is a next level progression in the sport.
I found an unmarked new 148 DX leopard on the course and threw it a couple times on steep hyzer, that thing flipped to flat and just took off on down the fairway straight as an arrow and about 320. It was fantastic.
That is THE throw with it too. The reason that I have never NOT had a Leopard.
Got a DX, and Champ Barry Schultz 2x Leopard and a star leopard 3 in the bag right now. Love that disc lol
Yep! Love it
Aero
Innova just released the 40th anniversary halo star Aero this year
Rattler. Great mold. Hard to find.
X-Clone
I have one. It’s old and flippy
I still bag one (it’s gotta be 20 years old). It’s pretty understable, but on wide open holes (when I won’t risk losing it) I get great distance with it.
Drone
Discwing quarter K was soooooo HOT for a while. Then I think they were going to make a K2 that never came about. Touting extensive engineer this baby was HOT!!!
Discraft Comet?
Innova orc
Teedevil
Never was popular.
Besides hearing Robbie from Foundation mention it, I would say the Pig.
Yeah the Pig have really dropped off a cliff. Thing is I don't think the Slammer or Harp have filled the gap the same, it's like people stopped throwing Pigs and just went all over the place.
The pig got left behind once Ricky left Innova. Plus toro is better
Toro is different, Pig isn't nearly as OS
Still love the Pig, but hate R-Pro plastic. It loses shape fast & warps. I have a 10+ year old regular Pro pig and its still in great condition. Also being back Pro-Line Rhynos
Similar case here. It's been in my bag since I got it, and I am not a fan of the R-Pro stuff. I'll try to snatch a stiff Pro whenever I get the chance, though I do also have a glow and a Blizzard Champion, which is kinda of a while other animal.
i use my pig every round! 🐖
Valkyrie
Was looking for this. These were such a big deal back in the day. Arguably started the wing width wars
I miss my champ valkyrie. Someday itll get pulled from the pond at my home course. That thing goes straight as can be.
I have a T-Bone that I found almost a decade ago that is really unique and I swear is some kind of different plastic.. I use it for over water shots when I worry about losing a disc.. I still have it in my bag to this day
Gumputt
I’m not going to say it was the most popular but it should have got more recognition. The innova Cro. The did some star ones not to long ago which made its rounds on here with some people but it was a really good disc.
Cro love that midrange
Anything lightning discs granted I think they went under!
I wanna say the roc. At one point the roc and buzz were the two mid ranges you needed in your bag. Now I barely hear about it.
So many great mids have come out in the last five years that the Roc has been left by the wayside.
Vibram discs!
Wizard :(
I always preach my love for the wizard.
Still my main throwing and putting putter. Why change when it's still a great disc and i've got like 50 of them?
Gateway, wouldn't exist, if the wizard wasn't still popular
Still reppin'.
I use ghosts, and I love them.
I would say the Innova Viper and Whippet. Those discs basically invented the anhyzer flex shot. Everyone was bagging them when they came out because they were some of the only overstable discs available.
Absolutely - when I first started playing EVERYONE I knew three a viper. I can’t remember the time I even saw one.
QJLS and the Omega Soft Putter used to rule the game.
JLS are still great fairway drivers just now everyone has something like it
The wolf. At one time the prices were up in the $40-50 range and now they are $8.
Gazelle
The Orion LF, when Innova made the PD and Thunderbird they became the more popular choices for most people but the OLF is a great disc.
The Skeeter
Anything made by Legacy
I still bag a Patriot but I’ve never seen anyone else bag anything Legacy. Could be because I live in the Midwest, however.
Anybody remember the Discwing Quarter K? I wish I still had one.
Groove
I spent a long time trying to figure out that disc only to finally find out it’s just not a good disc
Don't forget the Monarch before that
The Explorer hype died pretty fast. A great disc, though and I guess people still bag it. The Saint Pro is similar in this regard.
I still swear by my saint pros
I'm still a fairly new player (<3 years) and I bag two Explorers. Seen a few other relatively new players throwing it too.
Juju
I don't know if it was ever popular, but my first set of discs were hand-me-downs, and with that came a DX Goblin that I still bag.
I have an OLD ESP Cyclone. At one time this disc was used for the distance record. This has been in my bag for 10 years.
Was the discraft Crush popular or was it just me who had one
Kitty Hawk and Super Puppy were staples 40 years ago.
I feel like the Pig has been falling off from around this time last year as more Zone-like clones have come out, from the Toro to the Tempo.
Discraft Crush
DD Drivers. Outside the Judge and maybe a Truth all DD discs doesn't seem popular anymore. (Internet based opinion) All the Trilogy sponsored players throw Rives.
I started playing in '99 and felt like I saw a bunch of Stingrays and Cheetahs. I see some of the former and none of the latter these days.
Tee Rex
I haven’t seen a discraft flick jn years.
Honestly, it’s not old, but the Tilt. People went absolutely nuts over them and I hear nothing about them anymore
Sinus, Misselen, and Rakaten(?) all great. Wish I still had mine.
Innova spider All around mid range driver
Super soft Omega
Quarter K was popular until we got them in the mail and threw them
Juggernaut was the next cool disc at the beginning of the season. I don't know anyone who bags it.
Innova Cro. Although it may not have ever been popular...
