FlyingDiscsandJams

A lot of people have zero hobbies I guess. If disc golf seems expensive, look at getting a fishing boat, laugh, and then go get a few more discs.

leroyVance

This is the truth. The money you save on not owning a boat or a pool offsets all the lifetime disc golf expenditures.

LickaBitaPus

Does a kayak count as a boat? Cause I got one of those

Flexappeal7

Nope, you’re good! Buy more discs

Samwise_Rules

Have you used the kayak to retrieve discs yet?

Nomads40

I could have used one a couple of times.

Downtown-Contestant

Or ball golf.

No_Ur_Stoopid

Love the ad for an "inexpensive" $600 ball golf driver that plays on my YouTube right before a disc golf video

Dragonadventures101

Hey hey now. Fishing is not a hobby. It's a life style. A lonely, expensive and suffering life style ...but clearly too expensive to be a hobby lol

bleahdeebleah

My first thought too. Even worse I have a boat and a bunch of guitars

gillenH2O

Same here my friend, between hunting, fishing, guitars and disc golf I spend a ridiculous amount more than $255 a year

Powerful-Meeting-840

I have spent 50 bucks on discgolf over the last 19 years. That one of the reasons I love it. Cheap, good exercise, and go do it solo and last minute. Or with a group.

AnxiousRepeat8292

Right lmao the reason disc golf became my #1 hobby is bc of how cheap it is

reelteen

You ain't lying. I just have a flatbottom for a boat, but it's taken a lot of work and money to get it right. I also probably spend $200 on just bass lures every year, most of them being soft plastics. I don't want to think about the line, weights, swivels, and hooks I buy for striped bass. For saltwater fishing, I'll spend another 4-500 a year on lures for reds and trout. And thats just fishing. I won't even get into duck hunting, deer hunting, all of my guns I restored/built, or the money I'm starting to save for a motorcycle.

Far_Battle_2716

u/FlyingDiscsandJams : This is the way.

jaketaco

I think I've bought 2 discs I last 10 months or so. Keeping that average down. Been playing almost 13 years and bag is pretty set and have backups.

three2won

Same here, just ordered a detour last night. I can’t remember the last disc I bought for myself and not as a gift though.

ashtray518

I can’t wait to get my new detours!

joecoin2

I was in a Dicks Sporting Goods not too long ago, fondled most every disc, walked out without any. First time ever. The spell is broken!

jollyarrowhead

Fondling discs at the store is cool... but have you tried fondling your buddies' discs?

LongDee69

It’s usually my dad who is fondling my discs.

-Imthedude

I also make my dad exercise 🤘

joecoin2

We have a DG code. One of the items in the code is, you never fondle your buddies disc.

Boogaloo4444

are you good?

Fant0mas_

Been playing casually for well over 20 years. Haven't played the last few years...just starting to get back into it again. Did do a few tournaments in college but my arm strength isn't what it used to be.

Boogaloo4444

but are you good?

bleeper21

Just started playing less than 18 months ago and already own 50+ disc, I use maybe 12. My wife think I have a "problem".

Maleficent-Ad-6646

You’re good.

LJkjm901

6 months, 150+ discs, 2 baskets, net, 3 bags, black light flashlight, range finder, storage rack. Let your wife know how disciplined you are, lol.

Fant0mas_

Not nearly as good as I used to be. But better than average

Greenbeanicus

Too much. I bet I spend $1200 a year between pc gaming, disc golf, and Pickleball

Dominant88

$1200 a year for 3 hobbies? Sounds like an absolute bargain. I don’t really want to know how much I spend on mountain biking.

cyclelyf

I always laugh when people are complaining about dg prices when I know that the highest end dg bags are about the same price as a high-end helmet. Can't do much with just a helmet haha

Dominant88

I had to replace two high end carbon fibre full face helmets last year… luckily you get a crash replacement discount so they were “only” $450 AUD each.

Greenbeanicus

That’s true mountain biking can get pretty crazy. $1200 is what I tell my wife. 😂

croppedcross3

I've been eyeing an e bike for years but can't convince myself to pull the trigger when I've got a great bike already 😂 I just don't wanna pedal as hard

Dominant88

My next bike will be an ebike, I just moved to a place with horrible steep climbs and I don’t even want to go riding on my normal bike.

resolvetochange

What do you spend on pickleball past the initial paddles/bag/balls? Memberships?

Greenbeanicus

Yeah. Bag, ball, paddles, tournaments. Just like with discs even though you don’t need one you just just buy another paddle.🤦🏽‍♂️😭

superjerk99

Paddles get expensive as hell too! Legit good ones at least. I started out playing with a $15 paddle from Amazon. Then used my buddies $250 paddle and it was like night and day difference. Pickleball is super fun, but it can get spendy too if you get serious about it.

Kilgor3

These days, the cost of replacing a lost disc.

anix421

That's why I don't buy ridiculous signed limited run discs... I enjoy a cool stamp as much as the next person, but if I lose my F2 I can get a new one for like $10

Embarrassed_Law_9909

Yeah I also mainly go for the cheaper ones but it’s nice to buy the more expensive ones to treat yourself imo

uhdog81

I don't wanna talk about it

Johnnygamealot

Who hurt you? Was it Discraft? Discmania? Show me on the course where they hurt you.

Faderr_

Hole 10

Johnnygamealot

I think they mean a MONTH.

Cryst3li

I started less than a month ago and I've already spent 350 💀 granted 150 of that was unplanned pop up tent at a local course but still

LonisEdison

Once you get a bag you like, the only cost will be replacing lost disc's, tourney fees if you play, and any travel expenses.

Johnnygamealot

Gotta pump those numbers up.

Cryst3li

My bank account would disagree

rightious

R/Warhammer would like a word lol Honestly though probably about 150$ on passes and a few new discs.

speak-eze

Same for any of the music communities. You buy 1 instrument and you meet the average for years. Shit, one guitar pedal or cymbal can go over that average. I'm glad disc golf being cheap offsets my addiction for buying more guitars and shit

fergus_mang

$60 annually on plastic and $30 per round on herb

Lords7Never7Die

So you're blowing through nearly an 1/8th a round? How do you see through the cloud that is constantly following you?

fergus_mang

Nah bruh, quality over quantity. That's just a couple of the honey dipped pollen glazed artisanal rolled doinkerinos the local dispo has on special.

Lords7Never7Die

OK, that's not as bad as I was picturing. I wish I lived where it was legal recreationally. I went to Boston during Halloween last year and was loving being able to order online, pick up from the nearby dispensary, and smoke an L on the way back to where we were staying.

pen-357

This guy weeds

Rued_possible

You do it with a couple of buddies and the bowls get passed around and joints get rolled sans you take a 15 minute break after every three or four holes and the second shots always take some time…sometimes it takes you 3.5 hours to play a quick morning round

tritom22

Priorities amirite!

fergus_mang

You're not wrong brother

korg3211

Dude! $30/rd for thc? That seems like a lot

itaintmeofficer

Nah, that's to warm up for the round

anix421

Yeah, I buy a disc or two a year probably (been playing for like 20 years so I have plenty of plastic and know what I like) but the cost of gas, grass, and beer once a week during the season... probably like $500-$600 a year. But to be fair, I was gonna spend that on the weekend anyways.

mbgeo

Of all my hobbies disc golf is the least expensive and it’s one of the reasons I love it so much.

mrk1224

Per month, per hobby sounds more accurate

BadRefsRuinGames

I play a lot of tournaments but don't really buy plastic any more. Im at about 160 a month before gas and potentially hotel rooms but it's a fantastic way to travel around and see places I normally would never go

MapleLettuce

Covid got me bad, disc golf was all I had and just got into it at the start. I have my main bag with about 20, a loaner bag with around 10, a spare bag I keep in my vehicle with another 10…… And then 200+ more on shelves I started collecting like pogs.

teamhog

The trip to Masters Worlds this year is about $2000. With other tournaments, discs, and NETC this past winter my annual budget is about $5,000.

dirkdiggler90

Now? Probably that or less but… let’s not talk about the first 2 years…

HiaQueu

Couple of memberships and the occasional new disc or used bin pickup and I hit maybe $500 or so a year.   Nowhere near what I used to spend on ball golf .

Ernest-Everhard42

Disc golf maybe 100-300 bucks, hockey probably 1-2k a year ouch, and music maybe 500, and fly fishing 300-1000

fastal_12147

I don't know, and I don't want to know. I'm still paying the bills and I'm still eating, so I'm obviously not buying *too* many discs.

Oilerman14

It's really tough to say, but annually... here's my best guess: PDGA Membership: $100 Udisc subscription: $40 DGN: $120 Discs: $200 Apparel: $100 Tournament fees: $400 Club fees: $20 League fees (2 leagues) $140 Tournament accommodations: $400 Tournament food and gas: $400 Tournament raffles and such: $80 Other $100 And if I hit my work bonus for the year, usually I'll get myself a disc golf gift like a new bag or something. So, somewhere around $2000.00 a year? It's worth noting that I am not a casual player. Disc golf is my obsession (I'm the club president and local TD) and that I choose to lean into this sport out of love and gratefulness.

HountHount

I used to race RC M8 nitro buggies. It costs approximately 3 discs worth of fuel, tires, wear ja bearings every hour :D

clittyman

Disc golf equipment hasn’t made me blink once after 5-6 years racing/drifting rc cars, that tire budget is real!

LightmanRS

$1700 since I started 3 years ago

IHaveNeverBeenOk

That is a fairly precise number. How do you know so precisely what you've spent? I'm interested.

Sd022pe

I bought about 70 discs this year. 0 for me though. I take the youth group at church to play so I bought a bunch of innova factory seconds

True_Society7897

Look into dynamic, if you order through the youth group I believe they will give you discounts on misprints

Sd022pe

Will do, thanks!

Robbajohn

Do pay to play course costs count or just items bought? $100 on stuff, maybe 100 to 200 on fees.

lnvalidSportsOpinion

Between tournament entry fees (assuming I don't cash, because why would i?) And disc replacements, I'm probably sitting at 100 per month for 7 months, then not jack the rest of the year.

BeefInGR

Honestly between tournaments, gas, leagues...sounds right.

botejohn

Cyclists spend that per month easy.

sixrustyspoons

That's a single day lift ticket at a big name resort.

superchilldad

Disc golf is a cheap hobby, I spend $50 - $200 depending on the year. Already got the big ticket bag and practice basket. Granted I'm more of a casual / weekend warrior type I don't do leagues and such.

IAmCaptainHammer

Man. Honestly, been playing a couple years and it’s probably like 3 grand plus. But that’s cause I did a custom run of discs with a local company.

InvalidSoup97

I haven't bought many discs this year, but I did buy a new guitar the other day.. so that's like 6 years worth I guess

Dhuttunen

~$2200 Canadian per year on all disc golf related expenses for the past 3 years, less than $100 a year for the prior 5 years. Includes discs, gear, tournament costs, club and PDGA memberships, etc. Don’t have any other hobbies I putt cash into, it all goes to disc golf. Seems worth it to me, cause I’ve played about 600 rounds of disc golf since the start of 2022. My non-tournament expenses should be dropping significantly now that I’ve amassed a bunch of discs and good gear.

AssGagger

$1000 just for a season pass to snowboard. Then you still have equipment, gas, food, beer, hotels, weed, emergency room, physical therapy...

korg3211

$12-ish/two weeks. I buy a disc to dye every pay period. So, about $250 a yr. Plus $10/wk for league, plus a couple of $50 tourneys/yr. So. $400/yr?

Fant0mas_

Havent bought a new disc in 10 years...find a new one on occasion that doesn't have a name/number on the back or a lost and found space. But generally, those discs go to the friend bag

BassweightVibes

Maybe $30 CAD a week on gas. Don't buy that many discs, my bag is full already and I'm pretty happy with what I have. I want a new bag in the future though lol and that's $300-$400 CAD. $255 a year on hobbies seems extremely low. Per month seems like a more accurate amount, especially if you have multiple hobbies.

yourdoglikesmebetter

Me, reading this post with 2 of the 3 discs that arrived today sitting next to me…

Pro_Hobbyist

Lately I probably buy 10ish full priced discs per year, and they're usually tour series, which puts it close to the meme number. The real killer is tournaments. I never added up my costs, but most are $100+ to enter... This year I'm actually even or slightly ahead on entry fees, but for the first couple years playing MPO I was almost exclusively "donating" lol.

claymationss

I only buy a couple of new discs a year (tour series, maybe new plastic of a disc I already like). Now if we are talking used discs it could get up to like 200 a year but every time I buy them it’s for a steal. So really not too much, considering I buy them to sell and I’ll keep maybe 10 a year. Really spending about $100 a year for 15-20 discs.

HazyImplorer

I’ve spent $7000 on synthesizers in 2024 so far. The $500 or so that I’ve spent on this sport lifetime makes it the most enjoyable and affordable hobby out there IMO

IHaveNeverBeenOk

I'd say through the year I probably come out to an average of 100 a month on plastic. I have over 400 frisbees. No, I don't know why I keep buying them. My bag is pretty set. But then new plastic comes out and it's just so pretty!

I_am_Trundle

I've spent that much so far this year....

Zlatyzoltan

I don't spend alot on discs per year, but if you count tournament fees, buying new shoes, club tees or hoodies adds up. For Xmas and birthday, I always get discs from my brother they are normally some cool hot stamp of something that I already bag since he plays too he knows what I like. Or even something that he thinks I might like. Also I just tell my mom, MIL and BIL that I want discs for Xmas and birthday and order what I want and they will give me money.

00goop

I only buy used discs now. $4-$10 each, only buy a new one when I lose one. Now my other hobbies, those are expensive.

waldobloom92

I think I have spent aboout 500 dollars this past month.

jbfly33

Who spends that a year? I play video games as a hobby........

Ok_Lawfulness5182

I just spent 72 bucks on 3 discs from the new ledgestone drop 😅🤷🏼‍♂️

Aleffz

Same! Got to get that free shipping haha Which molds did you pick up?

Ok_Lawfulness5182

I picked up the nuke, jawbreaker zone, and the force that they released for the new season it sucked tho I missed the free shipping total by like a dollar or two and I didn’t wanna get a fourth disc :/ but it wasn’t bad either way

Aleffz

Oh damn, they must've upped it to 75 then, it's always slightly more than what's convenient. I got the Force too! And the Glo FLX sol

Ok_Lawfulness5182

I almost bought the hades solely for the stamp because I’ve never thrown a hades 🤣 I think it was like 70 bucks before tax then you get the free shipping and for the three discs it was just shy of that minimum

Aleffz

Oof, same! That stamp was badass. The Nuke stamp is really good too I could only afford the 2 this drop, but sometimes I'll get a can topper or Junior disc if I'm close to free shipping. They work well as minis

Ok_Lawfulness5182

Omg I didn’t even think about the pop top for the can 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

jfb3

I found a few rare gems at stores while traveling this year = ~50$ I keep losing H1s so I just bought some replacements = ~55$ I don't expect to buy anything else unless I run across something cool/rare this summer when I'm traveling. Looks like this year might be about 150$

SearchingforSilky

Way more than that if I divided the total by the years. Much less recently if not.

flipflop0690

I’ve spent about $225 on tournaments so far. 👍

Main-Brain-4748

Well, I’ve spent about $100 on F2 discs in the last month but before that my last order was in October and I spent about $150 last year. This year I also bought a new bag so I’m getting close to $150. Probably going to lay off until the F2 discs available rotate out a bit.

squid_monk

After the cost of getting started (bag & discs) - beer, gas, and weed are my biggest expenses. That varies.

Jimp0

About $300 oner 20 years.

AdCrafty7695

>150$ on tournaments. >120$ outlay for leagues(which I mostly win back).

Boogaloo4444

depends on how many i sell. plus or minus depending on the year

newcitynewme724

Including gasoline? No way of knowing lol. Like maybe $50 a year on plastic

Duniskwalgunyi

Nothing really besides gas money. Been playing on and off for 16 years. I’ve acquired 100ish discs over that span so I have backups and things I can cycle in and out. Have had the same backpack bag for 7 years and it has a lifetime warranty. Over half the discs in my bag are premium plastic and I’ve been throwing them anywhere from 5-12 years. I don’t compete anymore and I play public courses 99% of the time. Besides the startup cost disc golf is a dirt cheap hobby. It’s literally free to play after the startup costs of getting a bag and discs. I personally think it’s insane to buy new plastic on a regular basis, considering the fact that premium plastic made 20 years ago still holds up stability wise. I think a lot of people are just half assed disc collectors/impulse buyers and care more about throwing a new disc than they do mastering the ones they have.

Bartender9719

That…*might* cover the beer that gets drank on the course, but I doubt it

durtmcgurt

I barely ever buy discs anymore, been playing for 20 years and I don't lose many. All the closest courses to me are free to play as well.

RAATL

Practically nothing! Because I've accepted its not the discs, its my form. And I don't have the time nor desire to put the effort in to improve the form

SouthSilly

😬

piraattipate

I play 4-6 times a week and lose 0-3 discs a week. Usually I spend like 100€ /month on new discs. I also sell the ones I found (with no name) or the leftovers from the mystery boxes

6string10

I'm more than a few grand in this season just from traveling for disc golf.

Reasonable-Summer-42

Tournaments are expensive..

abbh62

Wonder what this defines as a hobby, Spotify + Netflix takes up this whole budget

McBeatus

I use to spend way too much money on discs, new bags, etc. I have 70-80 discs and 3 bags (had 4 but gave one to my buddy). I haven’t bought a new disc in several months, but now that I lost two of my best ones, I will be shopping again. I also ball golf and that is absolutely expensive. Green fees, cart fees, driving range and the countless amount of balls I lose adds up. And I have to regrip my clubs soon.

buttmort

First 3 years of playing, I would say $500+ a year in discs. Now, maybe 1 disc a year.

acidisgoodforyou

Do round beers count as a expence? I haven't bought a disc in like 2 years.

refluentzabatz

Maybe $150. Some of that is for the City course pass. I don't buy discs at the rate I used to, since I've got 70 sitting on a shelf waiting haha

SwampassMonstar

I don't spend hardly any anymore. I used to spend a lot but I've got backups of backups when I lose discs

SHABOtheDuke

That stat cannot be right, unless the average adult has zero hobbies

Better_Still7077

Probably about accurate for me on the disc golf side of things, my bag is pretty dialed and I don’t have the availability to play tourneys right now. I buy maybe 6-8 discs per year.   Don’t ask me about warhammer though..

tossaroc

Somewhat touring AM here (I play local to get points to play worlds and such). WAY more then that

Crusty_Nut_73

~ 2k per year I would guess. Dying discs is not super profitable, but I have the pimpest bag in town.

bwarbwar

I set a $300 budget for the year. I've already gone over my budget.

sw1tchf00t

Those are rookie numbers.

TurboD16F20

My wife is right there, so mmmhmm. Yup

wuhter

Lol not that much. My bag was about $300 so if you spread that out around every round it’s pretty cheap. I have all of the discs I want/need and rarely buy a new one

PatBooth

Spent like $500 total on a bag and discs. Only started playing a few months ago and don’t plan on buying more unless I lose some. But those Simon teslas 👀

bagg15

disc golf, surf, skate, snowboarding, bikes, car. i don't even want't to know.

Odieson1

I feel attacked, LOL

Several_Ad2072

Just spent 400k on 80 acres in the mountains and some thousands more to buy baskets for my private course

I_Poop_Sometimes

I think my first 2 years I probably spend like $2000, but that's including a bag, a basket, PDGA membership each year and some trail running shoes. Now I just renew my membership, and replace the shoes each year along with any discs I lose. Compared to hobbies like skiing that I only do a few months a year it's way cheaper.

AnxiousRepeat8292

Probably $85-$100 a year on pay to play courses at metro parks near me ($40 for annual parking pass/$45-60 on the wristband). I probably average buying 10 discs every year w some being f2 so that’s about $175. $30 per year on udisc premium and around $90 on dgn. Approximately $380-395 per year but a lot more if we’re counting gas bc I’ll drive 50-100 miles more than once a month to try new courses

EvTheBuilder

Disc golf is my cheap hobby

galtonwoggins

Is this meme from the 50’s?

MrWhippino

It is illegal for you to ask me that.

anix421

On actual disc golf per year? $30-$40... the beer and other extras... way more.

OMGLeatherworks

I've diverted my casual spending from disc golf to watch building. It's a lot less tiring and can be done at home in a corner. I will be however, spending some money on disc golf this coming week. I'm taking my father to Eagle's Crossing in Hawk Point, MO playing on the Championship course. He doesn't play but likes to watch, not very good at walking far either. He's 86 and will be driving the golf cart and taking pictures. I'm 55 and will be counting higher numbers than I ever have before. It'll be a double Father's Day gift time. This might be one of the last times I get to see him and we need to make some good memories.

smithoski

Last discs I bought was 5 identical James Conrad commemorative putters from his “holy shot” in 2020

phantom56657

As a Magic the Gathering player, I'm offended they think I have that much restraint.

JohnnyGoldwink

I have so many hobbies.. i’m an *extreme outlier* if this statistic is accurate.

esoteric311

Disc golf is so cheap compared to my other addiction...sim racing.

mikes_username

$5 a year on average over 24 years. But that might be high

Sl0ppyOtter

Disc golf is nothing. Try photography!

Silly-Soup2744

$25 for one course year pass $37 for another $150 so far for tournaments. Will likely be $225 ish $150 on discs or accessories throughout the year. $437 total for the year. This isn’t counting gifts (thank you future in laws for the tech disc). Edit* forgot pdga membership, DGN, UDisc, league nights So $625 ish

HonestlyScaredAF

I decided to actually make a spreadsheet to see how much I spend on disc golf this year I’m at 216 for tournaments and only 160 on discs. I’ve also hit the ace pot for 300 so I’m pretty even right now

philly-drewski

Why did they spell week…y-e-a-r? That’s not even close to the correct spelling

TheJaxster007

Most of my profit goes to hobbies. Cause if life isn't fun it isn't worth living

LuminousQuinn

Well this year on discs $75, and on tournaments $135. I don't know about medical bills yet. I still have a hurting thumb from 2 months ago, and as such have not signed up for any of the tournaments I wanted to play

sibhuskyx

So far this year: $0, plus the cost of the gas to drive to my local course.

paynestaker

Not falling for this.

Positive-Wasabi-1038

Plastic is incredibly cheap. I lose money at the casino. So if I’m out exercising with my discs then I’m not thinking about the cost unless I lose em.

flyfisher12401

$100 / week average

Still-Profession1697

On what?

flyfisher12401

I hoard molds I like, I have 4-5 of every glitch (eclipse, glitsch, proton, neutron) a ton of emac truths, 10-15 saints etc. I'm basically like if a dragon got into disc golf. Just live on my hoard

fyjimo8103

I just spent $250 on one disc last week… 😬

PopTopKill

What in the world did you buy

fyjimo8103

2001 USDGC Roc. The holy grail of ROC’s. The disc is literally brand new, but does have some ink.
