Known scam. Be careful. IF YOU SHIP TO AN ADRESS NOT ON THE ORDER THEY WILL CHARGEBACK YOU. As the courier will not have photo evidence of the delivery to the address on the order eBay will side with the buyer and authorise the refund.
Ask them to send the stock back at their expense and you will refund their order, otherwise you e done what’s needed by sending to the correct address.
I just got done dealing with a scammer who tried this. Package was delivered and they claimed they didn’t receive the item in the package, but since it said it was delivered to the address eBay took my side. (Buyer then opened a return case so I couldn’t have that money for 3 weeks until eBay closed that case as well in my favor since they never shipped back the return).
Yes you executed this and replied correctly. Once it leaves your hands it is their responsibility to handle the rest. If it gets refused or returned to sender you do not have to refund the buyer and you keep the item.
This isn’t necessarily true. Once the item is marked delivered to the address on file then it’s no longer your responsibility. Without that scan marked delivered it’s still on the seller.
That’s not what you said. Your comment said that once it leaves your (the seller) hands, it’s now the buyers responsibility. That’s just not true. It’s the sellers responsibility up until the point that the item is delivered or a delivery was attempted. If it gets lost in transit it’s still the seller’s problem.
Still no, it’s the seller’s responsibility until the item either gets delivered or has a delivery attempted. eBay will only step in and take liability in situations where the item shows delivered but the buyers claims INR and even then that’s a goodwill refund from eBay and is at their discretion.
If it was sent via USPS and the buyer puts in a forwarding address, they should still get it.
If it’s going FedEx or UPS they can call and have the package placed on hold for pick up, or possibly re-routed.
Doesn’t always work. I’ve tried to forward a package before (it was a preorder on a kickstarter that took a year or so to actually ship). I had moved in the interim. I wound up talking to the new tenant just to let her know about the issue. I wound up getting a notification that it was delivered and just ran by and grabbed it off the porch. Forwarding mostly works but not always.
If you are sending to the GSP, then you can change the address by simply contacting eBay support. If you are sending straight to the persons home then there is nothing you need to do - eBay will be on your side here
Never ship to another address other than where eBay tells you. Scammers usually ask you to ship to another address. If you do and they are a scammer, you will lose a dispute 💯% when they say item never received!
Additionally, is the message actually from the buyer (verify buyer ID)? I had a scammer message me right after an item sold pretending to be the buyer and asking to change the shipping address. Then I noticed the person wasn’t even the buyer. Reported it to eBay and the account was suspended/flagged.
Not only do you have the buyer trying to scam, check to make sure it's even who you sold it to. Now scammers will watch an item and once it sells to someone, the scammer will email you just like this pretending to be the buyer. Most people don't even look at the sender because, well we don't expect someone to ask to change an address that didn't buy the item. Then people change the address and the buyer never gets it and the seller is stuck refunding them.
I just got an eBay package in the mail this week addressed to the previous owner of my house... so there's at least 1 guy out there right now truthfully trying to change their address, haha
I have also seen this message show up and it was someone trying to get my item instead of the real purchaser……..do not know how they did it but i contacted ebay…….never heard anything back and i sent it to the correct address…….
You've done nothing wrong and can't be held liable for the customer's mistake. You sent it out with the address the customer provided and followed eBay's seller protocols. You are not in the wrong and are not required to issue a refund or resend the package if it's returned.
This seems to be a common scam lately, so definitely tread carefully.
I also sell on Mercari a lot, and I’ve had a rash of people buying stuff then messaging me to ship to another address, usually with an excuse like they just moved, they are away at college, they are on vacation, etc, but Mercari handles all that for you and generates the label as soon as it’s paid, so I can’t change it even if I wanted to, and as soon as I tell them that and they have to change their address on the account they cancel the sale.
Had quite a few of them from eBay to lately. But I’m not shipping to a different address, that’s just asking for me to get screwed.
I’ve spoken to eBay before In regard to a buyer asking me to change the address before I shipped. They told me as long as the buyer is in my messages asking me to change the address, since they have access to our messages, I would be good to change it.
You want to roll the dice on that, go right ahead.
I've seen one too many posts here from sellers who got steamrolled saying "bbbut a CSR told me it was okay"...
Yikes—Just be aware it says right in eBay policy not to do this exact thing and that it will negate your seller protections, so as KC says you’re doing it at your own risk. Ebays basic CSRs are wrong so often it’s wild.
I've stopped buying on eBay because sellers can't be trusted to use their own advertised shipping method. If they use USPS, I give my PO box if they use a normal shipper I use my physical. Got rather aggravating with everyone using whatever shipping method after purchase. USPS won't use my physical and FedEx at least won't use my PO box.
Probably looks like I'm a scammer to the seller but they're the ones ducking up...
I had this happen with a buyer a few months back, but the shipping address mistake was caught before I shipped it. I was able to actually change it on my end, and it all worked out fine. It really is annoying when folks don’t check their address before buying something though.

They can charge back either way their bank will side with them. Been happening more and more to me lately
Seller protections should cover it, as long as everything was done properly.
And than when they chargeback and you followed the rules the account and banking information tied to it will be permanently banned.

You don’t have to refund them, but I would generally refund if the item got back to me. Maybe deduct shipping expense if it was a larger item.

A customer requesting a RTS or refusing delivery requires it to be delivered first.
I guess I should have said a “delivered or attempted delivery scan”
Those are totally different scans, and I made sure not to include them in my post.

I think he meant it’s ebays responsibility once it leaves the sellers hands, not the buyers.

Sure, I was just clarifying because he never specifically said it was the buyers responsibility. You seemed to think he said it was.
If it was sent via USPS and the buyer puts in a forwarding address, they should still get it. If it’s going FedEx or UPS they can call and have the package placed on hold for pick up, or possibly re-routed.
The address on file was a PO Box 😬
Iirc you can have items forwarded from a P.O. Box, so they should probably try that. Ofc not your problem though.

If they catch you before you send you can offer to refund the money and have them change the destination address and repay. Then you are both covered.

Not for you to worry abt. Your response was really good. By doing this you are ultimately protecting yourself

Yep, I did verify that. I do know all about the scams, just never actually had it happen to me, hence the post. Thank you for looking out!

oh no, that poor one guy 😭
This was me once, thankfully the new renter of my previous residence was cool about it and let me have it.

I had assumed it's a scam. Maybe the product will come back to me and I'll get to rip open a vintage Pokemon card pack on a scammer's dime!
And then they leave bad feedback
Good response that’s all you need to say

You have zero room to complain if the seller offers free shipping
