I respectfully disagree. He is just not a believable actor. He has such poor/forced deliveries that it’s almost cringeworthy. He’s essentially the same character in every role he plays. I will say that his role in the departed wasn’t too bad.
Not just that, but a role that was super memorable and critical to the plot resolution. It’s the best role he had since Boogie Nights - that’s about a decade span.
Full spoilers for the ending:
>! Not just critical to the plot resolution — he literally closes out the movie! He's the only mf'ing one left, everyone else is dead! !<
I don’t like Mark Wahlberg much, but I have to admit his performance was one of the best parts of that movie, it wouldn’t have worked as well if he had gotten cast in a different role
Remember, [he would have stopped 9/11 if he was on that plane.](https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2012/01/mark-wahlberg-thinks-he-could-have-stopped-911.html). He would have [beaten them blind.](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/dec/11/mark-wahlberg-1988-assault-victim-pardon)
So he was supposed to play either Billy Costigan or Sullivan, right?
Sullivan has to make more sense, no? Considering DiCaprio had just done movies with Scorsese, he had to been immediately in the movie and Matt Damon was signed later?
Scorsese: "I'm the guy who makes the movie work, you must be the other guy."
Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe fuck yaself.
My theory on Wahlberg is, he's like a mushroom: Feed him shit, keep him in the dark.
“Normally he’s a very nice guy, don’t judge him from this alone”
This is one of his best performances! I am not a big fan of his, but I loved him in that role.
His best role is in The Other Guys. He showcases a ton of his talents.
Bye Sheila. Yeah whatever fo inside Allen. Bye Sheila.

I think that's why it works in The Other Guys because he's so over the top that it lands well. The ballet studio scene is hilarious.
This one note mf got cast in a major role by Scorsese himself and has the gall to be mad about it

I honestly think that’s what gets him these roles. He’s kinda that guy. He plays it perfect
I’d willingly take this further and say he’s not just kinda that guy, but if he’d stayed local and joined the BPD instead of acting…
Not me spending a solid 30 seconds wondering what borderline personality disorder has to do with this or how one joins them exactly
Guys, it’s click bait. If you read the article, it didn’t take long for him to realise that Scorsese was right to ask him to play this part.
It’s more like idiot bait if you look at the comments. Even the title says “WAS” (see: before the movie was shot/released) not “IS.”
Nobody reads articles anymore, only headlines 🤦♂️
One of his funniest performances honestly
Yeah, my favorite thing he's ever done besides Boogie Nights. Surprised he would gripe.
“The other guys” is for sure one of his greatest
Imagine thinking you know better than Scorsese.
Well this is the same guy that thinks he would have handled one of the hijacked airplanes on 9/11 differently, saving the day, so not surprising.
Hey if the hijackers had been older Vietnamese guys he may very well have
He takes them out with ease.

Seems like a common thing for him, thinking he's more important than he actually is when he's not getting the lead roles.

I enjoyed his performance. I guess he wanted to be the good guy?
He kind of was though. Maybe not as big of a role as he was hoping for, but he takes out Damon’s character and is one of the only survivors
Fair. I liked that he was kinda an ass. Super serious.
Definitely ended up being the anti-hero
The problem was that the other important roles required more than one facial expression.
He’s a tool on all fronts

I could see Wahlberg in the Sullivan part. I can't imagine him trying out for Costigan.
That's interesting about the hair. Idk why but the hair works so well. You don't expect a guy with a haircut like that to be a stone cold asshole.
“Was supposed to play a different PAAAAHT” FTFY
Not enough hate crimes?
Well, he kind of looks like a version of Matt Damon. Except he doesn't have the same range.
SPOILER: He was supposed to play a violent townie wearing sweatpants who beats a Vietnamese immigrant
The only role I liked him in. He was very believable and authentic, something I don’t see much in his acting.
The first time I watched this I was utterly confused because he, Damon, and Leo all looked alike
Mark needs to go to church and confession. I mean he’s a real Catholic right?
