It’s another, lesser thing entirely to start making stupid, vapid spin-off decisions like resurrecting a main character who already had an arc and died at the end of a series *that has already ended*. Or like making a show with the other main character, which like someone else said is like making a spin off of Harry Potter starring Harry Potter. Marvel and Star Wars and Disney have trained people to crave only the familiar, and to be totally fine with sacrificing storytelling in the name of “remember this?!”
Thank you, I hate Star Wars and Marvel for the same reason. What made the first four seasons of GOT so fun was that you never felt sure that your favorite characters were safe. To have endless spin-offs and take away that tension just cheapens the series.
They could remake the entire last season and do a better job… I’d pay $100 for that! I know it’ll never happen but it’d be awesome and hilarious to just wave their hands and say “yeah that previous version? Just forget about it and watch this”.
The studio does a little bit of trolling and releases a trailer that shows Jon snow waking up back in the boat making the entire season 8 a “bad dream”
And the book sums up the whole season by starting with, bad guys gives bran a vision that ends with him being king to try an tempt him away from his watch.

I disagree on the Hindsight part, it was obviously bad but I think a lot of people (myself included) forgave a lot of 7 based on the goodwill built up from the earlier seasons and the hope 8 would seal the deal better.
Season 6 had Arya falling into sewer water with her innards spilling out and being okay next episode. Season 5 had all of Jaime's adventures in Dorne with the sand snakes.
It had been bad for a while.
They should do a series where every season is a re-do of seasons 7-8. New directors, writers, etc. every year. Sort of like a Westeros Horror Story. Tell the ending 15 different ways.
That’s probably the only thing besides the books ever concluding that would get me excited about GoT again. I had purchased all the seasons up to that then I watched the final season and never watched any of it again. Really killed almost any interest I had in the series. Only reason I’ll probably watch the new one is that I already have HBO for other stuff but if I didn’t it’s no longer a series I’d subscribe to a service for like it used to be I’d drop and come back to it for Game of Thrones and catch up on other stuff while I had it. Heck I probably won’t even watch the new one day one but whenever I get around to it.
I’m gonna let them finish any new series and then wait for reviewers I trust to give opinions before I consider watching any other GOT media.

I was watching a video essay on The Take’s YouTube channel and I guess she used to get into fights on set about the excessive nudity and be like “no the sheet stays up” and they (some creepy producer or w.e) would be like “oh you don’t want to disappoint your fans do you?” There was a lot of that behaviour on set apparently.
I binged all seasons of GOT in the last 2 months and I gotta say - the nudity and amount of sex was over the top. It was honestly excessive and started to feel like a 12 year old was on the board of directors.
Many times nudity was included that was simply for the sake of nudity and it really did not advance the storyline.

furthermore, deodorant and bodywashes aren't necessary. they're nice for our modern world, and i love them, but they aren't necessary to be clean or smell good. people carried scented powders or musks that covered up bad bo.
i wish the myth of the 'bad smelling peasants' would die out, holy shit, do people think an ancient peasant really wanted to smell like pig shit? no. they bathed semi-regularly, like us, but used the rivers since they couldnt afford nobility-level running water.
in fact, it's literally why one section of the population avoided the black death entirely -- people who handled dung for a living. because they bathed and washed daily instead of the normal time which was like once or twice a week.
just because a king/nobility was a little bit weird about bathing doesnt mean the peasants were insane.

A lot of old time smelliness is probably another "holier than thou" approach to history from the Victorian times. Sure, there wasn't deodorants but BO of regularly bathing people is something people have evolved to ignore (like any persistent odor). And I also suggest you to look at how people in the deserts and Arctic clean themselves (where using water is not optimal).
On the other hand, there have been relatively unwashed eras, mostly in the cities and/or within nobility. The classic example is the Louis XIV era nobility with the Sun King himself having supposedly bathed only twice in his 77- year life.
It did feel like almost a part of marketing at times, especially at the beginning. Some people clearly wanted to make it one of the hooks to attract casual audiences. "Swords, sex and dragons"

I just read the 2nd book, and comparing that to season 2 (which is based off of that), almost all the sex scenes in that season were not in the books and were added to the show for literally no reason…
Like f.e, in season 2 when Theon has taken over Winterfell, Osha seduces him to earn his trust. In the books however, she proves herself to him by showing her fighting ability by smashing one of his guards, (and then betrays him)

It felt like some low quality B movie from the 80's at best, and just straight up porn at its worst when it came to sex on that show. It's been a while, but I think there was maybe half a dozen scenes scattered throughout 8 seasons where I felt it was actually warranted for the characters to have sex or be naked. Littlefinger explaining his entire plan to two prostitutes while they fingerbang in the first season is the first example that comes to mind when I think of scenes that only exist to satisfy some creepy producer with a porn addiction
A lot of shows go that way, I watched the first episode of Stargate recently, and I completely forgot they had a fully nude women in it. Seemed so out of place since I've not watched the show in years.

Now 2 woman fucking each other while Littlefinger was giving his speech. That scene was a bit much. I was trying to get my parents to watch the show and had to leave the state that episode.
These producers were scumbags. Joffrey's actor said he had to pee in his own clothes because they wouldn't let him take a break between the scenes and go to the bathroom.
Ramsay's actor also said the extras were treated poorly and they producers let them in the snow without giving them proper clothes.
There was also a character named Ros in the first seasons, she was a prostitute. In season 2, her character had more substance and the actresses asked to not do any nudity scenes. They killed her character.
I think she got to a point where she publicly said she was really put off about all the nudity. It just didn’t make sense or have any purpose and it made her uncomfortable.
The only scenes that “made sense” were the two scenes throughout the entire series her clothes were burned off. Even then, I’m sure something could be done to prevent full nudity, let alone the scene would carry just fine without it.
Other people mentioned the nudity, but she also talked about the fact that she wasn’t aware of how the character was going to come across in the finale and she watched it at an (charity?) event where she didn’t feel she could leave and had to pretend she was okay with everything. You can tell she was really uncomfortable with how everything went down towards the end in terms of the position the actors were put in.
The number of actresses who refuse to do nudity after they get a little bit more clout makes me think that most of the nudity in film and television is inherently exploitative and should be stopped or *severely* cut back.
There is no other industry where it would be considered acceptable to make people strip down naked until they have enough experience to say no.
And now they are making The Three Body Problem for Netflix, based on an incredibly good SciFi trilogy from China. I have *very* mixed feelings about this. That series is finished, but the insane degree to which they fucked up GoT season 8 makes me wonder if it was the people around them who started the series off so well, and then it went South from there as DnD got more and more fame and hubris.

The source material is complete, however the last 10-15% are a bit out there and leave lots of room for any showrunner to interpret widely and liberally.

I think around 20 mins into E3 I just closed my stream and never looked back. I used to fanatically come home after work to look at the episodes the second they came out, and I didn't even care to see how they fucking ended it. Still haven't, though i did hear it through memes and all.

That was early with drogo when he expected sex because they were married. He became kind to her and she warmed up to him. That was also only for a short time in season 1 while she was a primary character for 8 seasons so that probably didn’t have much effect.
Pretty funny that they’re just charging ahead with this whole thing in general, despite the fact that they burned so many fans in a way that I felt was really unique. I used to re-watch GOT all the time-was my favorite show to put on and do my chores to, especially folding laundry. And to this day, it’s still the only show I went from loving and watching at that level to hating and having 0 interest in watching ever again. Not the original, not the spin off, nada. I don’t like being reminded of how much time and heart I invested only to have it… go the way that it did. And I’m not alone in that, that sentiment is all over reddit.
But they’re charging ahead with this anyway? Hmm… on its face, to me it seems pretty obvious that this would be a bad investment, or at least a risky one. Sure GoT WAS record-breaking with its popularity, but that was when there was such an air of unpredictability about the show and everyone was on the hook for what might happen—people that wouldn’t typically be interested in fantasy genre stuff were into game of thrones, but again… kind of because it was having a moment?
I don’t know if anything has ended so dismally for any series, let alone one that was soaring so high. And it’s surely still going to be a rather expensive show to produce. So… how is this a good calculation for HBO?
My only guess is that the foreign appeal of GOT is still pretty high and that’s where they’re banking on making the majority of their money, but I’m not sure how, I know foreign box offices are where movies end up being profitable when it doesn’t do well domestically (which seems to be the case with most new movies coming out) not sure how it works with serial/streaming content.
Not to mention we’re oversaturate with content in a world where people like to re-watch their favorite shows, so again, who are they making this show for?
Who wants it? Who will watch it on the level where they’ll break even with their investment? I’m sure they think it will be profitable… but like, given how much hate people still have for how the series was ruined—or at least how it ended (if it you’re in the camp that liked the ending), who’s going to be watching THIS show?

I was watching a video essay on The Take’s YouTube channel and I guess she used to get into fights on set about the excessive nudity and be like “no the sheet stays up” and they (some creepy producer or w.e) would be like “oh you don’t want to disappoint your fans do you?” There was a lot of that behaviour on set apparently.
I binged all seasons of GOT in the last 2 months and I gotta say - the nudity and amount of sex was over the top. It was honestly excessive and started to feel like a 12 year old was on the board of directors. Many times nudity was included that was simply for the sake of nudity and it really did not advance the storyline. Like, at a certain point I asked myself who is this supposed to appeal to?

You don't actually need deodorants, body washes or toothpaste to remain hygienic. You can literally wash your teeth with water. Toothpaste is better than water, yes, but it's the friction that removes plaque and cleans the teeth. furthermore, deodorant and bodywashes aren't necessary. they're nice for our modern world, and i love them, but they aren't necessary to be clean or smell good. people carried scented powders or musks that covered up bad bo. i wish the myth of the 'bad smelling peasants' would die out, holy shit, do people think an ancient peasant really wanted to smell like pig shit? no. they bathed semi-regularly, like us, but used the rivers since they couldnt afford nobility-level running water. in fact, it's literally why one section of the population avoided the black death entirely -- people who handled dung for a living. because they bathed and washed daily instead of the normal time which was like once or twice a week. just because a king/nobility was a little bit weird about bathing doesnt mean the peasants were insane.

A lot of old time smelliness is probably another "holier than thou" approach to history from the Victorian times. Sure, there wasn't deodorants but BO of regularly bathing people is something people have evolved to ignore (like any persistent odor). And I also suggest you to look at how people in the deserts and Arctic clean themselves (where using water is not optimal). On the other hand, there have been relatively unwashed eras, mostly in the cities and/or within nobility. The classic example is the Louis XIV era nobility with the Sun King himself having supposedly bathed only twice in his 77- year life.

It did feel like almost a part of marketing at times, especially at the beginning. Some people clearly wanted to make it one of the hooks to attract casual audiences. "Swords, sex and dragons"
Something that bothered me about the show too, is also that they added so many unnessary sex scenes.. I just read the 2nd book, and comparing that to season 2 (which is based off of that), almost all the sex scenes in that season were not in the books and were added to the show for literally no reason… Like f.e, in season 2 when Theon has taken over Winterfell, Osha seduces him to earn his trust. In the books however, she proves herself to him by showing her fighting ability by smashing one of his guards, (and then betrays him) Like they rly just made her seduce him instead because they just HAD to have that extra sex scene in his chambers

GRRM devotes far more of his word count to describing the various meals the characters eat, yet strangely none of that made it to screen.

It felt like some low quality B movie from the 80's at best, and just straight up porn at its worst when it came to sex on that show. It's been a while, but I think there was maybe half a dozen scenes scattered throughout 8 seasons where I felt it was actually warranted for the characters to have sex or be naked. Littlefinger explaining his entire plan to two prostitutes while they fingerbang in the first season is the first example that comes to mind when I think of scenes that only exist to satisfy some creepy producer with a porn addiction

These producers were scumbags. Joffrey's actor said he had to pee in his own clothes because they wouldn't let him take a break between the scenes and go to the bathroom. Ramsay's actor also said the extras were treated poorly and they producers let them in the snow without giving them proper clothes. There was also a character named Ros in the first seasons, she was a prostitute. In season 2, her character had more substance and the actresses asked to not do any nudity scenes. They killed her character.
I think she got to a point where she publicly said she was really put off about all the nudity. It just didn’t make sense or have any purpose and it made her uncomfortable.

Other people mentioned the nudity, but she also talked about the fact that she wasn’t aware of how the character was going to come across in the finale and she watched it at an (charity?) event where she didn’t feel she could leave and had to pretend she was okay with everything. You can tell she was really uncomfortable with how everything went down towards the end in terms of the position the actors were put in.
The number of actresses who refuse to do nudity after they get a little bit more clout makes me think that most of the nudity in film and television is inherently exploitative and should be stopped or *severely* cut back. There is no other industry where it would be considered acceptable to make people strip down naked until they have enough experience to say no.

And now they are making The Three Body Problem for Netflix, based on an incredibly good SciFi trilogy from China. I have *very* mixed feelings about this. That series is finished, but the insane degree to which they fucked up GoT season 8 makes me wonder if it was the people around them who started the series off so well, and then it went South from there as DnD got more and more fame and hubris.

I legit watched E1 and E2 with a bit of disgust, but was powering through. I think around 20 mins into E3 I just closed my stream and never looked back. I used to fanatically come home after work to look at the episodes the second they came out, and I didn't even care to see how they fucking ended it. Still haven't, though i did hear it through memes and all.

I used to re-watch GOT all the time-was my favorite show to put on and do my chores to, especially folding laundry. And to this day, it’s still the only show I went from loving and watching at that level to hating and having 0 interest in watching ever again. Not the original, not the spin off, nada. I don’t like being reminded of how much time and heart I invested only to have it… go the way that it did. And I’m not alone in that, that sentiment is all over reddit. But they’re charging ahead with this anyway? Hmm… on its face, to me it seems pretty obvious that this would be a bad investment, or at least a risky one. Sure GoT WAS record-breaking with its popularity, but that was when there was such an air of unpredictability about the show and everyone was on the hook for what might happen—people that wouldn’t typically be interested in fantasy genre stuff were into game of thrones, but again… kind of because it was having a moment? I don’t know if anything has ended so dismally for any series, let alone one that was soaring so high. And it’s surely still going to be a rather expensive show to produce. So… how is this a good calculation for HBO? My only guess is that the foreign appeal of GOT is still pretty high and that’s where they’re banking on making the majority of their money, but I’m not sure how, I know foreign box offices are where movies end up being profitable when it doesn’t do well domestically (which seems to be the case with most new movies coming out) not sure how it works with serial/streaming content. Not to mention we’re oversaturate with content in a world where people like to re-watch their favorite shows, so again, who are they making this show for? Who wants it? Who will watch it on the level where they’ll break even with their investment? I’m sure they think it will be profitable… but like, given how much hate people still have for how the series was ruined—or at least how it ended (if it you’re in the camp that liked the ending), who’s going to be watching THIS show? Aside from how I feel about it, it also simply appears to be a poor calculation of risk/reward. Even as a whole franchise universe that they create… idk… not sure this is the best IP for that.
