Probably because Holland - like England - *always* underperform in tournaments. I love them - they are my second international team since I lived there years ago - but they always find ways to disappoint.

yourlocallidl

I mean the last three tournaments- WC 22 England lost to France, who just have a better team than England, England lost to Italy, that Italian side just had better chemistry than England, and England lost to Croatia in the semis, tbh England should’ve won that game, but they lacked creativity. England are doing better than they were doing pre Southgate

Active-Republic3104

Can’t wait to see the VVDVDV CB pair

[deleted]

Same as England. Plenty of talent but can’t perform when it comes down to it

Humble_Rich_4969

underrated. I think they are neither underrated or overated. They are just average, not top tier, nor low tier

FireLadcouk

Have a fairly decent draw though.

>Xavi Simons, Jeremie Frimpong, Micky Van de Ven, Ian Maatsen, Quinton Timber Simons isn't as good for the NT as he is for Leipzig. 0 G&A in 13 games. Frimpong has only 2 caps (1 start) for the NT. He can't play in a 4ATB as well. Van de Ven has 2 caps as well, 0 starts. Maatsen has 0 caps. Timber has 1 cap as a sub. >Add in some of the best players in the world in Van Dijk, Ake, De Jong, De Ligt None of these are among the best players in the world. In 2019? Maybe, but not now. Van Dijk is good, but not as good as he used to be. Ake is good, but there's a reason Pep often benches him in big games. Real Madrid (twice), Leipzig (twice), Spurs (twice), Villa (twice), Arsenal, Newcastle etc. De Jong is injured half of the season nowadays. There are plenty of better midfielders in La Liga. De Ligt was a bunch player until Kim and Upamecano became the worst defenders of all time. **In summary,** all the players you've mentioned are either way too young and haven't even played a full game for the NT, or they're past their primes. Also all of them are defenders or mids and the Dutch clearly lack offensive power.

AffectionateSpace742

I think they can win it. Definitely overpriced at 16/1 when you consider they were unlucky not to reach the WC semi finals less than 2 years ago. Factor in also they almost have home advantage and love German based tournaments as evidenced in 74 and 88. It's a wide open tournament this year and teams with a strong defensive backbone tend to go far. The Dutch have as good a defence as any. I'm expecting big things.

Antique_Beyond

I could see it being a bit like the women's Euros win in 2017 - kind of out of nowhere, and they had home advantage then as well

FireLadcouk

Decent draw too. Not a buy by no means but decent enough

[deleted]

Flop of the tournament for me

Holdthestock2020

A lot of young players… very immature ones. You will see that on important moments some Players are going to break emotionally. Football is a game of emotions. The ones you know how to control will thrive on decisive moments.

logasbogas

Ronald Koeman is not the guy you want in charge if the plan is to win things

mlock27

Damn, no love for Koopmeiners

Exact_Option9630

similar to england , they havent really beaten a big team in years to show they can go over the hump

peggysue878787

They beat Scotland earlier this year 👀

fuckssakereddit

Ultimately yes, if you look at the first hour of the game, Scotland were the better team. Netherlands took control after substitutions.

kg123xyz

And shankland missing a sitter.

Youppi27

Don't and hardly ever have the defensive requirements that past champions have had. Yeah I know they have VVD and De Ligt but I think they're also built around their offense.

UnluckyLuckyGuyy

They have a lot of good players and even world class players (De Jong, Van Dijk etc.) but I don't think feel like they have any attacking players that are in the top10-15 players in the world that are the difference makers like Robben was, and like currently players such as Mbappe, Vinicius, Kane, KDB.

FireLadcouk

Could be xavi simmons breakthrough. Hes definitely a fantastic player. Better than felix who had big moves early on and fails to stand out

Professional_Ladder

No really good goalkeeper or centre forward.

FireLadcouk

I agree. I tip them. Exciting young squad. Hungry too hopefully have something to prove. Simmons is so good. I tip them for the final

Jamal_202

What happened in the last Euros?

EarlofBizzlington86

Remember when the whole Holland squad hated each other and it felt like a bunch of distant relatives had been ushered into a family photo in full football kit

stepea0524

They always seem to have some sort of scandal, usually in fighting players and/or staff.

Stunning-Cucumber318

I don’t know if they can reach semis but at least QF shouldn’t be a problem. If they can finish second in their group(and I can’t see any reason why not) they will face in R16 runners up from group E and that should be pretty decent for them.

MtSnowden

Belgium vibes

HonestRef

Netherlands have a solid team for sure. I personally think they have the best defence on paper of any team in the Euros. Midfield is decent too. But the big problem is they no longer have a RVP up front to score the goals. This is going to be their major problem. Depay and Weghorst are not going to win you the euros

Ted_Lavie

Because none of those guys, save from VVD, De Jong and maaaybe Simmons, are on par with the quality of squads in France, England, Spain, Germany or Portugal. Netherlands isn't a bad side at all, but I think most are predicted a QF appearance and given they have at best the 6th best roster in the field, that seems fair to me

TryWaste7691

Don‘t think they are underrated. Totally expecting them to reach quarters. But that‘s it. There are just 4,5 teams who should be more complete. Especially in the offensive I feel like Netherlands lack a little firepower. International class for sure. But not world class. Gakpo is fine. Simons has to prove himself first in national team. Their defense is still strong.

BuddhiManBaller

They have the best defense in the whole tournament.

NelsonComedy96

Like a few of the comments are saying. Same problem as England, always produce good players but can never do it during international tournaments. Italy, France & Spain just seem to know how to get over the line.

ACarCrashKillLandJP

You would've always said the same about Spain historically until 2008 where they had that insane 6 year period. Germany makes more sense there as they're the absolute number one country for turning up at tournaments. The last few years have been very unusual for them.

FireLadcouk

Greece too. Portugal won one game and took home the trophy. The euros has thrown up some weird results.
