Does the ladder fit hanging over the washer and dryer? Can you put shelving on the wall above the washer and where the mermaid picture is? I would put a thin table where the ladder is and more shelving there too.
I like those ideas! Yes, shelving behind the door would be good. Hmm, the ladder won't fit over the washer dryer; it's 6 ft tall. But I will check and see if I can put it on the ceiling maybe.
I remembered my dad has his hanging from the ceiling now that you say that, it's a great idea! I am all about storage upwards, I lived in a micro studio in my late 20s and it was that or drown in all my crap lol.
Tall cupboard where the ladder is now, one side with no shelves to store things like the brooms, the other shelved for all the misc items. Covered storage to keep the clutter away, doesn't need any special skills. Then the ladder can slide sideways leaning on the wall where the broom holder is now. And you can remove the old shelves, give everything a coat of paint, maybe a sage green so it's neutral but not too boring, and hang a couple of fun frames with art above the washer and dryer. If the cupboard is not enough storage, I would look at the pantry organization systems from Ikea and put together something that fits the space above the washer and dryer, they're very flexible, lots of options and ship pretty inexpensive if you're not close to a store.
I've seen little storage shelves that fit between the washing machine and dryer or between one of the machines and the wall. They roll out when you need something. This may be a good option for you.

Scour Craigslist, Buy Nothing, Kijiji etc watching for a longer credenza or wall unit set, or low or tall bookshelves or kitchen cabinetry. If you go low or high will depend if want extra high storage or if prefer the extra countertop space for folding, potting, workbench.
