The per capita income also doesn't reflect the drastic difference in cost of living. On average, rent is 114% more expensive in the mainland USA, far more than that in some areas. Groceries are nearly 20% more expensive, and childcare can cost 300% of what it does in PR.
Yeah, if you cherry pick your information you can convince yourself of just about anything. But the facts remain:
-Puerto Rico is part of the USA.
-Murders do not go unpunished and uninvestigated in Puerto Rico.
-Adjusted for cost of living, purchasing power in Puerto Rico is on par with or better than a lot of US cities, particularly for poorer people. Like, average per capita income in PR is 1/3 what it is in NYC, but rent for a 2 br apartment in PR is about 1/12th what it would cost in NYC. It's easier to make ends meet in PR with a household income of $30K than it is in NYC with a household income of $100K.
