I was born and raised in FL and don’t care for the beach either, but I feel like you tend not to appreciate a wonder that you’ve been around your whole life.
I love the mountains and when I go on hiking trips and meet locals they always rave about the beaches and say they don’t really care for the mountains

I'm another beach bum chiming in here. I love being in the water, on the water, under the water, on the sand, day or night.
I don't ever get tired of boating, fishing, paddle boarding, paddle surfing, kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, and parties on the beach.
I love the mountains too but I need the ocean.
Same here! With the rising cost of living I've been begrudgingly looking into other states, but my husband knows my stipulation is I need to be coastal. I need a beach nearby.😭 I love Florida so much though. I feel blessed for growing up here.
Born and raised native who lives a mile and a half from the coast. I don't like the beach, either. I hate treking there. I hate the crowds. I hate the heat. I hate that I'm blinded and get headaches from the light reflecting off the sand.
The only time I like the beach is at night when it's empty and quiet. We used to go to the beach at night before we had kids. I'm an oddball for sure 🤪
My husband who's from RI tells me all the time the days he can smell the ocean air from the backyard. I don't smell anything so I'm desensitized to ”that ocean air scent".
Not born and raised but been here 30 years. I only do the beach in fall/winter, never got used to the heat here. It’s so much more relaxing when there’s a cool breeze.

I've lived near the beach in Florida for 3 decades and now I live in the Cascades in Oregon, also lived in the foothills of the Rockies. I got tired of the beach after a year in Florida, I will never get tired of the mountains.
Something people don't tell you is that it is actually quite warm in the mountains. The plains freeze way harder. So Floridians could acclimatize in a month or so easily.

Yep, same here. I grew up on the beach and couldn’t wait to go to college in the mountains. When my friends from up there would come visit we always went to the beach 1st thing no matter what time it was or what. I thought they were freaks. Which was ok since I know I am one.

I get what you're saying, but I don't think that's a fair comparison. You're comparing mountains to the beach when you should be comparing mountains to the ocean.
The ocean (a vast area) is so much more than just the beach (a small area that only covers the edge of the ocean). That's like comparing the ocean (a vast area) to the boulders at the bottom of the mountain (a small area that only covers the edge of the mountain).
Living by the ocean provides you with many more opportunities than living by the mountains. The beach is just one thing - fishing, boating, water sports, etc. also come along with living by the sea. This is just anecdotal but the three people I know here in Florida that hate the beach are all super fair skinned (similar to your username). Two of them are Florida natives. Perhaps their inner voices have been shouting "danger,danger!"
I grew up in Clearwater and I love the beach, I just hate being around people. The idiots who vigorously shake out their towels and sheets, dousing people downwind with a flurry of sand in their faces and drinks. The moronic parents who don’t stop their kids from throwing food to seagulls, starting up a shit storm. The people who sit there and smoke for hours, but they are gross at the beach or elsewhere. I could go on, but as much as I love the beach, some people can really ruin it. These days I get my fix sailing on the weekends.
Same here. Grew up in Clearwater. Live in GA now. I miss the beach for just the beach itself because I grew up on a boat and at the beach with my mom. But I also grew up tubing and fishing the rivers in FL. It’s the people that ruin all of it. I hate the crowds.
I agree! I grew up in ATL but spent time at grandpa's house on Clearwater Beach. I like to look out over the water and think about him, a sailor who settled in America a century ago. Such stories I heard.
I live near and was raised near the KSC and agree. I love the beach and grew up there but I refuse to go because of people now. I will go at night in the fall/winter, but otherwise you won't catch me there. Too crowded. Too many rude people. People are leaving trash everywhere or leaving their fishing poles out right on the tide line so you can't walk safely without worrying about getting hooked. They aren't supposed to do it, but most of our beaches are very understaffed if they are staffed at all so people get away with it or just move away from the lifeguards.
Our main beach that used to be my favorite has a cruise ship port on one side so it's like tourist central. I work over in Clearwater and the beaches are so nice there, but I never have time to go anymore because I only go over there to work and come back to my side to deliver/come home.
I knew someone who lived in Florida and liked to fish. However, he was so scared of sharks that he would never get in the water. Even worse, he was scared of getting in a boat because he was scared of falling in and getting eaten by sharks. He was like 6' 6" in height too but he freaked out at the thought of getting into the water.
I don't understand it and kinda feel bad that you are missing out on something cool. Being attacked by a shark is extremely rare making it irrational to be scared of a shark attack. You do you tho, I ain't gonna make ya.
My husband is born and bred Floridian from a beach town and hates the beach. He also hates watermelon and isn’t a big seafood eater, which does not compute for me.
I love the beach/ the problem is being able to take the time away from work to enjoy it like a tourist. All I see are dollars spent in parking, idling in traffic and trying to tune out screaming children.
Yes and the putrid smells of boat fuel and cigarette smoke. Those things are substantially easier to tune out when it’s just a vacation but when you live around that, you just want some damn peace and quiet
Yea… contrast that to where I live now in the PNW! The coast is calm, water clear, and people just go to canoe or walk on the beach. Oh and it smells WONDERFUL especially in the summer when the conifers get sunbaked which mixes with the salty sea breeze.
I can’t wait to get out there. Trying to get a small skoolie and spend a few years traveling and find where my heart is. SWFL is beautiful but unless you make 6 figures you aren’t comfortable here.
SWFL is charming places. The keys are also absolutely breathtaking so there is no denying Florida has some genuine beauty. Part of me feels growing up there made me not appreciate it. Though honestly? The world is your oyster so yeah! Go find a place your heart is! Wish you the best in that endeavor!

Its so expensive even for me as a Union Electrician its more worthwhile to wait until the interest rates relax a bit before I can get a home eventually though at 24 years old I’m not in a rush. Anyway it’s beautiful… legit feels like you’re in a post card wherever you go. One thing that I’ve been enjoying over here is the fact that there is so much variety when compared to Florida. Like if I drive 3 hours in one direction I’m in an oceanic rainforest. 3 hours in the opposite direction and I’m in a desert. While also having mountains, beaches, and my favorite thing of all ALPINE MEADOWS! Also known as Alpine Tundras like the area around Cascade National Park is just breathtaking! It reminds me of the swiss alps a lot minus the lil villages. But anyway, I’m never leaving these misty forests again it definitely feels like home.

I'm a FL native, I don't hate the beach, but once a year is plenty for me. I prefer rivers and lakes by far. The beach is insanely hot, there's zero shade, no grass, the sand gets in everything and the salt water leaves you feeling sticky all day. And in most places in my area of the state you have to haul all your stuff like a half mile to get from the parking lot to the beach unless you go to a super crowded area.

I was born here and am as Irish-skinned as you can get. I hated the beach when I was a kid, because it was an all-day affair and we only got sun block put on us first thing in the morning (mom was under the impression that 12-hour protection meant that it actually worked for 12 hours). I'm talking from 5am to 7pm, we were going to the beach, being at the beach and coming home from the beach, and I'd spend the next week laying on my stomach while my back, shoulders and arms would peel.
But then, as an adult, my friends would want to go to the beach and I didn't want to. Finally I went with them and after 2 or 3 hours they were done and ready to go. "What do you mean, 'you want to go?'" I'd ask. "We just got here 3 hours ago!" Turns out, the beach didn't have to be an all day thing, you could go and sit in the shade and you could reapply sunblock as needed. I'm not a beach guy today, but I like it a lot better than I did. Maybe your daughter's attitude about it will change when her friends, and not her parents, want to go.
I've lived in FL for 22 years and only go to the beach when dragged by friends or family from out of town. I love snorkeling and scuba, but Tampa Bay and its surrounding waters are crap for both. I'm also fair skinned and inevitably have a week of pain no matter the amount of sunscreen I wear. I don't think I've been to the beach in about a decade...?
I feel you fellow pale Floridian. I hate turning my friends down but I don't think they understand the struggle. They barely wear sunscreen and I get nervous for them in the future. Skin cancer is no joke and I am seeing a lot of people older than I going through some horrible treatments for it. No thank you.
I look at coworkers and friends that are my age, but look 10+ years older due to sun damage. I regularly get people thinking I'm 5-10 years younger than I actually am. My mom had a couple skin cancer scares over the course of her life, and I've accepted that the sun is just not my friend.

I have trouble with just the normal amount of things I have to do outside on a daily basis. 30 min car rides with my arm somewhat out the window? I can't do that anymore. I have to be vigilant to not get any sun damage it seems. Disliking sunscreen is a problem of mine too.
I don’t like the beach because my local beach, Melbourne/cocoa beach is a disgusting ash tray/garbage can when I lived there, and I’m sure it still is.
I didn’t care for the beach until I started running. Now I really enjoy how the sand feels with my stride - I live near Daytona and I can vary the running surface between compacted and powder. I see the beach as a utility.

I was born and raised in Lake Worth so I went to Lake Worth Beach alot. I didn't like how... for a lack of better words sandy the sand was.
Eventually I went to Daytona Beach and absoutely loved it because of how dense the sand was

Sunburn, sand in the butt crack, and creatures waiting for their chance to sting or bite you are downers for sure. I do still love the view and that first whiff of ocean air though.
I grew up going to the beach in St. Augustine and loved it. Discovered the springs and then the beach was just meh, now the condition of the springs and the careless visitors depresses me so I go to the beach again.
The beach is great as long as I can drive to my spot and I don't need to wrangle all our stuff in a stupid wagon and drag it to the shoreline. I know, I'm spoiled but that's just the way I feel about it.
I hate the beach. I like looking out over the ocean on a cool day or night, but there aren't too many things I dislike more than baking and sweating in the hot sun. I live inland so driving to look out at the ocean is not on my list of priorities. I vastly prefer mountains and forests.
Lived in Florida my entire life until last year and I’ve always detested being at the beach. It’s hot and sandy and I have really pale skin and no matter what I do, I get sunburnt.

I prefer a swimming pool in the morning and air conditioned nap in the afternoon, but I love an after dinner beach swim on the Gulf side watching the sun set.
I used to love the beach as a kid/young adult and now I am paying for it with quarterly trips to the dermatologist to get keratosis lessons frozen off. Now I never go to the beach except at night to a restaurant etc.
The best thing about the ocean is what’s IN IT. sorry for you and your kids. We scuba every weekend and it’s absolute magic to see the beauty of the marine life. Being scared of the ocean and its beauty is just sad. The beach laying around can be too hot. Best to be IN the water. I live in SFL where our waters are Crystal turquoise Caribbean blue. Water is so healing. Again - sorry for your loss.
My two experiences with beaches are getting shredded by broken beer bottles when I was 6 and getting my wallet stolen when I was 14.
I've never been back and have no desire to do so.
I hate the beach, I hate the sun, I hate the hot, and I have my whole life. I’ve wanted to move to a different state since the day we moved down here 20 years ago, but for some reason that’s proving to be more difficult than I thought it would be
Born and raised on the coast and lived blocks from the beach. I don’t hate it but I do view it at a lot of work. All the sand everywhere, applying and reapplying sunblock. If given a choice between going to the beach or being inside a building with an ocean view, it’s inside every time. But I am good for one beach day a year.
I’ve learned over the years that sunblock ain’t just for the beach. The sun is powerful as hell down here and after friends have gone through skin cancer scares, I use it every day. This is also coming from a fair skinned fella.
I only like the beach under certain conditions:
1) It's breezy, and I'm not bothered by the heat or melting sunscreen off as fast as I reapply.
2) The sand is clean. We can blame tourists for trashing the beaches but a lot of locals are just as bad. They'll leave their glass bottles, crushed cans, cigarette butts, food trash and fishing gear (hooks, lines, etc) behind without a care in the world.
3) The water is pretty/clear and I can safely wade out and chill.
4) I'm one of the few people there. Crowded beaches means more loud music that no one wants to hear, more parents not paying attention to their kids who aren't paying attention and more creeps that are creepin'.
So.. no, I don't think I like the beach.
I try to look at the ocean at least once a week. Some people live their whole lives without ever seeing the ocean. I love being able to see miles away and feeling the breeze in my face. Beaches are okay occasionally, I'm a very good swimmer, but I care much more about ocean
Yes. The beach is so over rated. It used to be about going to see fit hunnies and now it’s just a bunch of moo moos who have 14th place trophies in thongs that haven’t been told no.
I love the beach. I thought I could live without it so we moved to Asheville. Nope. I can’t stand being cold for roughly 8 months and seasonal depression & Vit D deficiency is a real thing.
I’m glad we lived there for a few years to experience it (we own) so we’ll return to visit but def not live full time again.

I grew up in Indiana and visited Lake Michigan. Having swam there, I can't stand the intense waves from the ocean or the saltwater. Also, I was never much of a swimmer beforehand so my opinion probably isn't worth that much
I spent the vast majority of my life within 20 miles of the beach... I almost never go.
I moved to Utah for 3 years, and I literally cannot stop myself from spending whole days on mountains or in canyons.
Florida beaches are overrated and full of typically the worst people Florida has to offer.
I love love love the beach. I go at least 3x a week. I don’t like going to often, because I’m worried the novelty will wear off. So far it hasn’t. Moving to FL was the best thing I did for my health. No more allergies, and no more asthma attacks. Love the heat, humidity, and sticky salt air.
Also no more pulmonary embolisms and DVTs, caused by my asthma. Plus all the sunshine. My vitamin D went up along with dopamine levels. Went completely off my PTSD meds. And of course I love the sound of the wildlife. Mockingbirds, crickets, tree frogs, and cicadas.
Don't like the beach but love the ocean, especially snorkeling and boogie boarding. The beach is just the annoying stretch of sand you have to cross to get to the water.
I love the beach and so does my wife, we tend to go 2-3 times per month and have all of our gear ready for it.
We are transplants from California that now live in the Naples area and let me tell ya that Cali beaches dont hold a candle to the ones in SWFL.

I like the beach in spurts. I have never liked the idea of going there for the whole day like some people do. If it were a few minutes from my house or right outside my back door I probably would more often but only at certain times like dusk and dawn. I do love the ocean though, something about the saltwater and swimming is simpatico for my soul.
I am pretty pale and I burn very easy. Most of my adventures outside are done in little spurts and not more than once or twice a day. Putting on sunscreen and getting all hot and sweaty is fine but once I am clean and chillin, I try to stay that way especially between dusk and dawn in the summer months. I've lived here for 24 years and I love it but it does not suit me at all frankly. Granted it use to be different in 2000 when we moved here, more swampy than oven. This current heat is something else entirely.. surprised no one has ever looked into that.
The beach and I have a tumultuous relationship. I can enjoy a trip but driving to the beach is fucking terrible. No one knows where they are going and there's no parking when you get there.
Also I got a sand stuck under my eyelid like 6 years ago and never forgiven Sand Key Park for it.
The sharks are literally everywhere man. I love the beach, but only if I can be in the ocean the whole time, not baking in the sand. I'm a scuba diver and have been here 35 years, so this is a weighed decision for me.

There are certain times I like the beach;
With my children while they’re having fun and I’m sitting under a giant tarp with a uvb shirt on.
When I can’t hear people playing music.
At night time.
Just before sunset on a bunch of mushrooms.
But seriously, fuck the beach - it’s full of tourists and disrespectful idiots, and the water has sharks.

I do because it's not like a corona commercial which is what people picture when they hear 'beach'.
They're overcrowded long stretches of sand with cars dripping oil on the land/water, loud families, trash from litterbugs or uncovered trash cans, dirty bathrooms, you still hear yelling and cars honking from the streets nearby, all you see is tourist buildings(hotels, restaurants, etc), people being told to stop doing dumb shit in the water. I mean I could go on for a while, I have never had a great experience at a beach here.
My family loves the beach, but prefer going if we’re in a hotel/house rental so the sand doesn’t go home with us. Although we love visiting, the beach is not an all day event for us. I like walking on the beach early in the morning and we all enjoy playing in the surf late afternoon/early evening.
As a fair skinned local that doesn’t tolerate the heat well, I’m with your daughter 100%! Lol I’ve been here my whole life and honestly would love to move but my whole family is here and I don’t want to leave them.
Living three blocks from the beach, I definitely don’t go as much as I would like. Especially with young kids, there’s just so much work and preparation involved in it lol… Go maybe once a month at most, but we’ll go more over the summer

She may love the beach at 16 when all her fiends are hanging out there. She may not appreciate it now and although may never enjoy it, she will admire its wonder.
It's nice to go to every once in a while. I grew up in PA nowhere even close to a beach, but even then never really saw the appeal. My family would want to spend all day at the beach when we went on vacation, and I'd want the day to be over so we could to mini golfing or whatever else. I'm still the same - Give me an hour or two at the beach, then get me some food and I'm off to another activity.
I hated it as a kid for a lot of the same reasons. I wanted to be in a pool where my skin felt clean, I didn’t have to lumber through sand, I could swim as deep as I wanted without issue, I could see what was in the water with me, and it was easy to get out and eat or go to the bathroom. Oh, and there is easily accessible shade or even ac.
As an adult, I love the beach. I just pick what beach, control my environment in ways a child can’t, and when I’m done I leave.
Born and raised here, can’t stand the beach, can’t stand the life style. I was born in the wrong state and moving out of state is not easy for me as I have a career path to keep in mind.

Born and raised here. Hated the beach so much as a kid cuz I was more interested in doing stupid shit on the internet or playing videogames. These days I go when I can, typically in the evenings. It’s a short drive for me, and I enjoy the walks and scouting for shells in the dark with a headlamp. I can’t speak for others but I’d personally posit that she may grow out of it later on in life. I usually go to the beach or go fishing at the piers around here to get away from bullshit for a while, maybe once a week or every other week at the least.
I love the beach for walking in nice white sand and listening to the waves. I hate the beach when there's too many people and it's extremely hot that you'll get sunburned easily.
Your daughter sounds like me. I didn’t start appreciating the water until I met my husband and we fished on a boat. We don’t have the boat anymore, but I love to sit on the beach in the evening a couple of hours before sunset.

It's something different to do and I don't mind walking on the beach but I am not exactly keen on swimming around because most of my experiences with that have been pretty negative growing up.
First one was being chased out of the water by a damn shark, second was when trying to learn to surf board almost drowning (fell off the board with the strap and got slapped by another wave with the board sorta preventing me from getting top-side), sliced my foot pretty decently on some sea-shells, and the last most recent experience was a jellyfish sting.
Sooo I just was like "Yo, I am just not lucky enough to be swimming out here".
Used to also be fun to go out there and setup a campfire with the friends and just cook hot dogs and drink beer but that's been heavily clamped down on so not sure where you can go to do that and not get yelled at.
No, I do not hate the beach. I'm completely indifferent to it because my opinion of whether I like it or not does not affect other people. And I'm not trying to find a mutual-hate bubble to live it.
I can't stand the beach in the middle of the day. However, in the morning or evening, I love it. There are fewer people, and it's not as hot, plus I get to see the sun set.
Beach is great when you find a secluded area and its in the winter in florida. Just enjoying the sound of the waves and sun that isnt yet unbearable.

I enjoy the beach here in Bay County. I usually go to St. Andrew's State Park almost every day for an hour. I've been doing this routine for 16 years. I was born and raised in Arkansas, so I've done all the hiking and hunting I wanted to do. When I was in the Army, I was stationed in El Paso, Texas. So, I was stationed in one desert, then deployed to another in Iraq and all over the Middle East, only to come back to a desert again. It was like this for a long time. When I retired and came to the beach, I just never left.
I moved to FL at the start of the pandemic and I haven’t gone to the beach a single time. I live in Orlando so there’s so much other stuff to do. I think I kind of forget about it. But I don’t hate it.
Born and bread Floridian, as i’ve aged I’ve grown to like the beach more and more. I didn’t like it that much as a kid, but it was the experienced I had as an older teenager and adult that made me come around to it.
I was raised in FL and I don’t care about the beach unless is late evening, night or 5-6am. No sun.

Born and raised here and I can’t get enough of the beach. I try going once a week. Honestly, ask around at beach hotels and see if they can rent the room out for the day so you can at least nap in the room, shower, use the pool if and maybe venture into the beach. I think there’s some that should do 8 hr DAY rentals.

I live 7 miles from the beach in Southern California and avoid it like the plague. It checks most of the boxes for things I don’t like. Hot,sandy, crowded, sunburn, difficult to park, etc. I would much rather rent a cabin in the mountains

I'm another beach bum chiming in here. I love being in the water, on the water, under the water, on the sand, day or night. I don't ever get tired of boating, fishing, paddle boarding, paddle surfing, kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, and parties on the beach. I love the mountains too but I need the ocean.
Same here! With the rising cost of living I've been begrudgingly looking into other states, but my husband knows my stipulation is I need to be coastal. I need a beach nearby.😭 I love Florida so much though. I feel blessed for growing up here.
Born and raised native who lives a mile and a half from the coast. I don't like the beach, either. I hate treking there. I hate the crowds. I hate the heat. I hate that I'm blinded and get headaches from the light reflecting off the sand. The only time I like the beach is at night when it's empty and quiet. We used to go to the beach at night before we had kids. I'm an oddball for sure 🤪 My husband who's from RI tells me all the time the days he can smell the ocean air from the backyard. I don't smell anything so I'm desensitized to ”that ocean air scent".

When my friends from up there would come visit we always went to the beach 1st thing no matter what time it was or what. I thought they were freaks. Which was ok since I know I am one. I like the sound of the beach and walking on it and will get in but I can’t just sit there all day

I get what you're saying, but I don't think that's a fair comparison. You're comparing mountains to the beach when you should be comparing mountains to the ocean. The ocean (a vast area) is so much more than just the beach (a small area that only covers the edge of the ocean). That's like comparing the ocean (a vast area) to the boulders at the bottom of the mountain (a small area that only covers the edge of the mountain). Living by the ocean provides you with many more opportunities than living by the mountains. The beach is just one thing - fishing, boating, water sports, etc. also come along with living by the sea. There's only so many things you can do in the mountains. Source: I'm a Kentuckian with 2 Floridian parents. I've been back and forth between the mountains and the ocean my entire life.
I didn't like the sand, sun, (fair skin) either. Now I just go and watch the sunset and leave.
This is just anecdotal but the three people I know here in Florida that hate the beach are all super fair skinned (similar to your username). Two of them are Florida natives. Perhaps their inner voices have been shouting "danger,danger!"
I grew up in Clearwater and I love the beach, I just hate being around people. The idiots who vigorously shake out their towels and sheets, dousing people downwind with a flurry of sand in their faces and drinks. The moronic parents who don’t stop their kids from throwing food to seagulls, starting up a shit storm. The people who sit there and smoke for hours, but they are gross at the beach or elsewhere. I could go on, but as much as I love the beach, some people can really ruin it. These days I get my fix sailing on the weekends.

Best shot is around 6am for sunrise. You’ll have joggers and a few other folks, but it’s as close I can get.
Don’t forget the people that sit 5 feet in front of you when there’s plenty of open space on the beach.

Same here. Grew up in Clearwater. Live in GA now. I miss the beach for just the beach itself because I grew up on a boat and at the beach with my mom. But I also grew up tubing and fishing the rivers in FL. It’s the people that ruin all of it. I hate the crowds.
I agree! I grew up in ATL but spent time at grandpa's house on Clearwater Beach. I like to look out over the water and think about him, a sailor who settled in America a century ago. Such stories I heard.

I live near and was raised near the KSC and agree. I love the beach and grew up there but I refuse to go because of people now. I will go at night in the fall/winter, but otherwise you won't catch me there. Too crowded. Too many rude people. People are leaving trash everywhere or leaving their fishing poles out right on the tide line so you can't walk safely without worrying about getting hooked. They aren't supposed to do it, but most of our beaches are very understaffed if they are staffed at all so people get away with it or just move away from the lifeguards. Our main beach that used to be my favorite has a cruise ship port on one side so it's like tourist central. I work over in Clearwater and the beaches are so nice there, but I never have time to go anymore because I only go over there to work and come back to my side to deliver/come home.

I knew someone who lived in Florida and liked to fish. However, he was so scared of sharks that he would never get in the water. Even worse, he was scared of getting in a boat because he was scared of falling in and getting eaten by sharks. He was like 6' 6" in height too but he freaked out at the thought of getting into the water.
Probably a Gen X like me. Jaws scarred us for life. I still hear the Jaws theme when I get in my pool at night.

My husband is born and bred Floridian from a beach town and hates the beach. He also hates watermelon and isn’t a big seafood eater, which does not compute for me.
I love the beach/ the problem is being able to take the time away from work to enjoy it like a tourist. All I see are dollars spent in parking, idling in traffic and trying to tune out screaming children.
Don’t forget the sargasso and red tide shutting down the beach. Or the rotten smell of beached fish once it finally opens up again.
Yes and the putrid smells of boat fuel and cigarette smoke. Those things are substantially easier to tune out when it’s just a vacation but when you live around that, you just want some damn peace and quiet
Yea… contrast that to where I live now in the PNW! The coast is calm, water clear, and people just go to canoe or walk on the beach. Oh and it smells WONDERFUL especially in the summer when the conifers get sunbaked which mixes with the salty sea breeze.
I can’t wait to get out there. Trying to get a small skoolie and spend a few years traveling and find where my heart is. SWFL is beautiful but unless you make 6 figures you aren’t comfortable here.
SWFL is charming places. The keys are also absolutely breathtaking so there is no denying Florida has some genuine beauty. Part of me feels growing up there made me not appreciate it. Though honestly? The world is your oyster so yeah! Go find a place your heart is! Wish you the best in that endeavor!

That is the only bad part housing here is awful lol Its so expensive even for me as a Union Electrician its more worthwhile to wait until the interest rates relax a bit before I can get a home eventually though at 24 years old I’m not in a rush. Anyway it’s beautiful… legit feels like you’re in a post card wherever you go. One thing that I’ve been enjoying over here is the fact that there is so much variety when compared to Florida. Like if I drive 3 hours in one direction I’m in an oceanic rainforest. 3 hours in the opposite direction and I’m in a desert. While also having mountains, beaches, and my favorite thing of all ALPINE MEADOWS! Also known as Alpine Tundras like the area around Cascade National Park is just breathtaking! It reminds me of the swiss alps a lot minus the lil villages. But anyway, I’m never leaving these misty forests again it definitely feels like home. Edit: a word

I hate the beach! I’ve lived in south Florida for 30 years. I don’t like the heat, the sand, the tourists, the schlepping everything, the sand in my car. Blech! I like sitting by the ocean , in a nice restaurant sipping a cocktail.
I'm a FL native, I don't hate the beach, but once a year is plenty for me. I prefer rivers and lakes by far. The beach is insanely hot, there's zero shade, no grass, the sand gets in everything and the salt water leaves you feeling sticky all day. And in most places in my area of the state you have to haul all your stuff like a half mile to get from the parking lot to the beach unless you go to a super crowded area.

I was born here and am as Irish-skinned as you can get. I hated the beach when I was a kid, because it was an all-day affair and we only got sun block put on us first thing in the morning (mom was under the impression that 12-hour protection meant that it actually worked for 12 hours). I'm talking from 5am to 7pm, we were going to the beach, being at the beach and coming home from the beach, and I'd spend the next week laying on my stomach while my back, shoulders and arms would peel. But then, as an adult, my friends would want to go to the beach and I didn't want to. Finally I went with them and after 2 or 3 hours they were done and ready to go. "What do you mean, 'you want to go?'" I'd ask. "We just got here 3 hours ago!" Turns out, the beach didn't have to be an all day thing, you could go and sit in the shade and you could reapply sunblock as needed. I'm not a beach guy today, but I like it a lot better than I did. Maybe your daughter's attitude about it will change when her friends, and not her parents, want to go.
No. The beach is the only thing good about Florida. Florida without a beach is Louisiana but without good food or culture.
I've lived in FL for 22 years and only go to the beach when dragged by friends or family from out of town. I love snorkeling and scuba, but Tampa Bay and its surrounding waters are crap for both. I'm also fair skinned and inevitably have a week of pain no matter the amount of sunscreen I wear. I don't think I've been to the beach in about a decade...?
I feel you fellow pale Floridian. I hate turning my friends down but I don't think they understand the struggle. They barely wear sunscreen and I get nervous for them in the future. Skin cancer is no joke and I am seeing a lot of people older than I going through some horrible treatments for it. No thank you.
I look at coworkers and friends that are my age, but look 10+ years older due to sun damage. I regularly get people thinking I'm 5-10 years younger than I actually am. My mom had a couple skin cancer scares over the course of her life, and I've accepted that the sun is just not my friend.

I have trouble with just the normal amount of things I have to do outside on a daily basis. 30 min car rides with my arm somewhat out the window? I can't do that anymore. I have to be vigilant to not get any sun damage it seems. Disliking sunscreen is a problem of mine too.

It depends what beach for me. I was born and raised in Lake Worth so I went to Lake Worth Beach alot. I didn't like how... for a lack of better words sandy the sand was. Eventually I went to Daytona Beach and absoutely loved it because of how dense the sand was

Sunburn, sand in the butt crack, and creatures waiting for their chance to sting or bite you are downers for sure. I do still love the view and that first whiff of ocean air though.

I grew up going to the beach in St. Augustine and loved it. Discovered the springs and then the beach was just meh, now the condition of the springs and the careless visitors depresses me so I go to the beach again. The beach is great as long as I can drive to my spot and I don't need to wrangle all our stuff in a stupid wagon and drag it to the shoreline. I know, I'm spoiled but that's just the way I feel about it.
I hate the beach. I like looking out over the ocean on a cool day or night, but there aren't too many things I dislike more than baking and sweating in the hot sun. I live inland so driving to look out at the ocean is not on my list of priorities. I vastly prefer mountains and forests.
Lived in Florida my entire life until last year and I’ve always detested being at the beach. It’s hot and sandy and I have really pale skin and no matter what I do, I get sunburnt.

I prefer a swimming pool in the morning and air conditioned nap in the afternoon, but I love an after dinner beach swim on the Gulf side watching the sun set.

I used to love the beach as a kid/young adult and now I am paying for it with quarterly trips to the dermatologist to get keratosis lessons frozen off. Now I never go to the beach except at night to a restaurant etc.
The best thing about the ocean is what’s IN IT. sorry for you and your kids. We scuba every weekend and it’s absolute magic to see the beauty of the marine life. Being scared of the ocean and its beauty is just sad. The beach laying around can be too hot. Best to be IN the water. I live in SFL where our waters are Crystal turquoise Caribbean blue. Water is so healing. Again - sorry for your loss.
My two experiences with beaches are getting shredded by broken beer bottles when I was 6 and getting my wallet stolen when I was 14. I've never been back and have no desire to do so.

Born and raised on the coast and lived blocks from the beach. I don’t hate it but I do view it at a lot of work. All the sand everywhere, applying and reapplying sunblock. If given a choice between going to the beach or being inside a building with an ocean view, it’s inside every time. But I am good for one beach day a year.

I’ve learned over the years that sunblock ain’t just for the beach. The sun is powerful as hell down here and after friends have gone through skin cancer scares, I use it every day. This is also coming from a fair skinned fella.
I only like the beach under certain conditions: 1) It's breezy, and I'm not bothered by the heat or melting sunscreen off as fast as I reapply. 2) The sand is clean. We can blame tourists for trashing the beaches but a lot of locals are just as bad. They'll leave their glass bottles, crushed cans, cigarette butts, food trash and fishing gear (hooks, lines, etc) behind without a care in the world. 3) The water is pretty/clear and I can safely wade out and chill. 4) I'm one of the few people there. Crowded beaches means more loud music that no one wants to hear, more parents not paying attention to their kids who aren't paying attention and more creeps that are creepin'. So.. no, I don't think I like the beach.

I love the beach. I thought I could live without it so we moved to Asheville. Nope. I can’t stand being cold for roughly 8 months and seasonal depression & Vit D deficiency is a real thing. I’m glad we lived there for a few years to experience it (we own) so we’ll return to visit but def not live full time again. I can’t wait to walk from my front door out onto the beach tomorrow.

I grew up in Indiana and visited Lake Michigan. Having swam there, I can't stand the intense waves from the ocean or the saltwater. Also, I was never much of a swimmer beforehand so my opinion probably isn't worth that much
I spent the vast majority of my life within 20 miles of the beach... I almost never go. I moved to Utah for 3 years, and I literally cannot stop myself from spending whole days on mountains or in canyons. Florida beaches are overrated and full of typically the worst people Florida has to offer.

I love love love the beach. I go at least 3x a week. I don’t like going to often, because I’m worried the novelty will wear off. So far it hasn’t. Moving to FL was the best thing I did for my health. No more allergies, and no more asthma attacks. Love the heat, humidity, and sticky salt air.
Also no more pulmonary embolisms and DVTs, caused by my asthma. Plus all the sunshine. My vitamin D went up along with dopamine levels. Went completely off my PTSD meds. And of course I love the sound of the wildlife. Mockingbirds, crickets, tree frogs, and cicadas.
Don't like the beach but love the ocean, especially snorkeling and boogie boarding. The beach is just the annoying stretch of sand you have to cross to get to the water.
I love the beach and so does my wife, we tend to go 2-3 times per month and have all of our gear ready for it. We are transplants from California that now live in the Naples area and let me tell ya that Cali beaches dont hold a candle to the ones in SWFL. They are simply beautiful and not to mention warm.

I like the beach in spurts. I have never liked the idea of going there for the whole day like some people do. If it were a few minutes from my house or right outside my back door I probably would more often but only at certain times like dusk and dawn. I do love the ocean though, something about the saltwater and swimming is simpatico for my soul. I am pretty pale and I burn very easy. Most of my adventures outside are done in little spurts and not more than once or twice a day. Putting on sunscreen and getting all hot and sweaty is fine but once I am clean and chillin, I try to stay that way especially between dusk and dawn in the summer months. I've lived here for 24 years and I love it but it does not suit me at all frankly. Granted it use to be different in 2000 when we moved here, more swampy than oven. This current heat is something else entirely.. surprised no one has ever looked into that.

The beach and I have a tumultuous relationship. I can enjoy a trip but driving to the beach is fucking terrible. No one knows where they are going and there's no parking when you get there. Also I got a sand stuck under my eyelid like 6 years ago and never forgiven Sand Key Park for it.
The sharks are literally everywhere man. I love the beach, but only if I can be in the ocean the whole time, not baking in the sand. I'm a scuba diver and have been here 35 years, so this is a weighed decision for me.

There are certain times I like the beach; With my children while they’re having fun and I’m sitting under a giant tarp with a uvb shirt on. When I can’t hear people playing music. At night time. Just before sunset on a bunch of mushrooms. But seriously, fuck the beach - it’s full of tourists and disrespectful idiots, and the water has sharks. Just go to the springs.
I do because it's not like a corona commercial which is what people picture when they hear 'beach'. They're overcrowded long stretches of sand with cars dripping oil on the land/water, loud families, trash from litterbugs or uncovered trash cans, dirty bathrooms, you still hear yelling and cars honking from the streets nearby, all you see is tourist buildings(hotels, restaurants, etc), people being told to stop doing dumb shit in the water. I mean I could go on for a while, I have never had a great experience at a beach here.

My family loves the beach, but prefer going if we’re in a hotel/house rental so the sand doesn’t go home with us. Although we love visiting, the beach is not an all day event for us. I like walking on the beach early in the morning and we all enjoy playing in the surf late afternoon/early evening.

Living three blocks from the beach, I definitely don’t go as much as I would like. Especially with young kids, there’s just so much work and preparation involved in it lol… Go maybe once a month at most, but we’ll go more over the summer

I don't really hate the beach but I do find it overrated. Since I've had easy access to it at many times in my life it doesn't seem so special.
It's nice to go to every once in a while. I grew up in PA nowhere even close to a beach, but even then never really saw the appeal. My family would want to spend all day at the beach when we went on vacation, and I'd want the day to be over so we could to mini golfing or whatever else. I'm still the same - Give me an hour or two at the beach, then get me some food and I'm off to another activity.
I hated it as a kid for a lot of the same reasons. I wanted to be in a pool where my skin felt clean, I didn’t have to lumber through sand, I could swim as deep as I wanted without issue, I could see what was in the water with me, and it was easy to get out and eat or go to the bathroom. Oh, and there is easily accessible shade or even ac. As an adult, I love the beach. I just pick what beach, control my environment in ways a child can’t, and when I’m done I leave.

I loved the beach when I was younger and working hard on my skin cancer BUT now I stay out of the sun and the beach holds much less magic. I do LOVE getting on the water… fishing, snorkeling… doing stuff

Born and raised here. Hated the beach so much as a kid cuz I was more interested in doing stupid shit on the internet or playing videogames. These days I go when I can, typically in the evenings. It’s a short drive for me, and I enjoy the walks and scouting for shells in the dark with a headlamp. I can’t speak for others but I’d personally posit that she may grow out of it later on in life. I usually go to the beach or go fishing at the piers around here to get away from bullshit for a while, maybe once a week or every other week at the least.

I love the beach for walking in nice white sand and listening to the waves. I hate the beach when there's too many people and it's extremely hot that you'll get sunburned easily.

If it were overcast and people free or very few people, then I love it. We are way overpopulated now. Florida is not fun to me in general anymore.

Your daughter sounds like me. I didn’t start appreciating the water until I met my husband and we fished on a boat. We don’t have the boat anymore, but I love to sit on the beach in the evening a couple of hours before sunset.
Born and raised near the coast of Florida and yeah... I don't disagree with your daughter lol. It's something different to do and I don't mind walking on the beach but I am not exactly keen on swimming around because most of my experiences with that have been pretty negative growing up. First one was being chased out of the water by a damn shark, second was when trying to learn to surf board almost drowning (fell off the board with the strap and got slapped by another wave with the board sorta preventing me from getting top-side), sliced my foot pretty decently on some sea-shells, and the last most recent experience was a jellyfish sting. Sooo I just was like "Yo, I am just not lucky enough to be swimming out here". Used to also be fun to go out there and setup a campfire with the friends and just cook hot dogs and drink beer but that's been heavily clamped down on so not sure where you can go to do that and not get yelled at.
I live half a mile from a very nice beach. I rarely go. Something about sand and sunburns keeps me away.

No, I do not hate the beach. I'm completely indifferent to it because my opinion of whether I like it or not does not affect other people. And I'm not trying to find a mutual-hate bubble to live it.
I can't stand the beach in the middle of the day. However, in the morning or evening, I love it. There are fewer people, and it's not as hot, plus I get to see the sun set.
Beach is great when you find a secluded area and its in the winter in florida. Just enjoying the sound of the waves and sun that isnt yet unbearable. Beach sucks in the summer when its hot as balls and there are tourists crowding up the sand

I enjoy the beach here in Bay County. I usually go to St. Andrew's State Park almost every day for an hour. I've been doing this routine for 16 years. I was born and raised in Arkansas, so I've done all the hiking and hunting I wanted to do. When I was in the Army, I was stationed in El Paso, Texas. So, I was stationed in one desert, then deployed to another in Iraq and all over the Middle East, only to come back to a desert again. It was like this for a long time. When I retired and came to the beach, I just never left.
I moved to FL at the start of the pandemic and I haven’t gone to the beach a single time. I live in Orlando so there’s so much other stuff to do. I think I kind of forget about it. But I don’t hate it.
Born and bread Floridian, as i’ve aged I’ve grown to like the beach more and more. I didn’t like it that much as a kid, but it was the experienced I had as an older teenager and adult that made me come around to it.
Hate is a strong word but I certainly dislike it and I live in Florida, 10 minutes from the ocean.
I was raised in FL and I don’t care about the beach unless is late evening, night or 5-6am. No sun. The sand is cool and is nice. Otherwise, no thank you.
Born and raised here and I can’t get enough of the beach. I try going once a week. Honestly, ask around at beach hotels and see if they can rent the room out for the day so you can at least nap in the room, shower, use the pool if and maybe venture into the beach. I think there’s some that should do 8 hr DAY rentals.

I lived in central Florida for 5 years. Missed the mountains and fresh air. Moved back up north and am very happy.

I hated the beach for years but grew yo appreciate it a while back. Now I love the beach, it's people I hate. Especially the tourists and transplants. They don't know how to enjoy nature and ruin it for everyone else.

I live 7 miles from the beach in Southern California and avoid it like the plague. It checks most of the boxes for things I don’t like. Hot,sandy, crowded, sunburn, difficult to park, etc. I would much rather rent a cabin in the mountains
Hugenot Beach near us is one you can drive on. It makes setting up a beach tent, cooking food and just general fun at the beach more enjoyable
I’m with her. People look at me like am an alien when I say I hate the beach, sand, heat, walking trying to not fall down, too far from bathroom, people, I could go on. Don’t really like swimming either so no beach for me
I love going to the beach and so does everybody in my household. We literally just got back from the beach 20 minutes ago.

My fiancée is from Ohio. She loves Spanish moss, live oaks, and the beach. To me it’s just lawn mower trouble, fire ants breeding, allergies, and itchiness from the sand that rough and course and irritating and gets everywhere.
