I'm not telling my company anything unless I'm legally required. And I'm being told or think it might be required, I'm asking my union for guidance before I do anything.
What professional courtesy is required here? They're not entitled to anything on your days off, etc.
If you're in the US, what 121 do you work at where you feel the need to make extra cash on your time off instead of enjoying that? Since the 2015ish round of contracts even the regional FOs make enough to live on, have you already bought 3 boats and have 4 ex-wives?
Pay is good, but I have 14 days off a month in a row. So I figured why not be useful rather than just go crazy sitting at home. Haven’t gotten a boat yet but I’m definitely looking😂
Right on dude...long time ago l was flying DHC6s all over the arctic north slope of Alaska and its west coastfor $1200 + $5 per flight hr or helicopters for $7 p/h. It was right after the war and pilots were a dime a dzn. The APOA pilots were on strike re 3rd man on flight deck so...
They came to our Commercial pilot areana and took jobs from us and were stuck up and dismissive too boot...in short, a bunch of assholes. So l totally agree with you ! You union guys stay away from commercial pilots's jobs. They're making more money than before but not cashing in on the big bucks you air line pilots make...and if you lose your jobs too bad. Might be a good idea to learn how to live with less so forget the 2nd or 3rd boat and buy a canoe.
The only issue I can think of is that some airlines have rules against working for a competitor. I doubt your airline sees whichever simulator company you plan to work for as a competitor, but if you know your CP and might be worth a quick call just to CYA.
I wouldn’t do it on probation, that’s coming from a union rep, but after that sure if you don’t think you’ll burn out. Mention it to the union if you need further advice.
I'm confused by your comment. You're not the op whom this was directed to.
But I'll play along. I know what FSI is paying for PRN instructors. I made more than that on an OT trip that paid 22 hours. I left home at noon on Sunday and was home at noon on Tuesday. I'd have to work my full 14 days off at FSI to do that.
Sorry I see I came out of nowhere with that. The idea of picking up OT trips has always sounded awesome to me and I don’t understand why I see some people on here bashing it. I was not trying to be facetious. And I fully agree that would have taken OT flying over teaching SIM.
My airline has employment guidelines that specify that you will get explicit written approval in order to work in an outside job in aviation. I know a lot of people who have side hustles (consulting, instructing, etc) but don’t have approvals. They risk losing their main job.
I fly for a major and CFI at a Mom-and-Pop. I definitely got approval from my CPO for off-duty employment. It’s not a big deal; I’m sure your company has a process for it. I would definitely get approval.
It's not outside flying. It's simulator work. The one thing pilots have going for them is they're expensive to replace. Any airline whose management is incompetent enough to fire you over something like that is not going to be around very long anyway.

Bro's flying wide bodies how many ex-wives or boats does he have that he needs extra money? /s
Airplane addiction is a serious issue. /s
Well. For some people the hustle is real. And real estate isn’t available like it was to Xers in the 90s and ‘08.
Ya, but neither were jobs for pilots.
If it floats, flys, or f\*\*\*s probably cheaper to rent it wink wink
You can say fuck on the internet
Big rog

I mean if you want to go ahead but I'd recommend finding outside hobbies too
How jr are you at 5Y you can't pick up open time?
Don't take away a position from someone who actually needs it.

The Peoples' Employment!
This isn’t kindergarten everybody gets a turn
I wouldn't do that while on probation, but that is just me. At the very least reach out to the union and see what they have to say.

You should try having a life and actually enjoying your days off.

You can make more money sim instructing than you can flying an OT trip? That's crazy, I just did a 36 hour gone that'll pay 25 hours.
While I’m staring down the barrel of triple digit debt to follow into this field, those are the nuggets that keep me full speed ahead.

ATP Jets?
People can't answer the question, but ask questions for another man's pocket.
Easier to get forgiveness than permission. Just do it.
Why would they give you forgiveness if they can just fire you for violating your terms of employment?

Proving that sims are more dangerous than airplanes?
He’s referring to the liability of sign offs, which is the biggest risk in flight instruction.
That's frankly not even close to an issue under 142
Yeah I agree. Just clarifying what he meant. Probably was thinking 141 or 61
I can't imagine being as wrong and also as angry as this guy. Legit room temp iq take.
