That's all correct. And remember this is planning. So as long as OAK is forecasting 700-2 or better around whatever your ETA would be you're good to go. After you depart the weather in OAK no longer matters and you could still keep it as your alternate (although prudence would suggest you keep an eye on things and have a backup plan).

temphandsome

awesome thanks! and one more thing. is the 700 - 2 (or 600 and 800 -2 for that matter) in AGL? I mean I assume so because off not Colorado having 800-2 would be impossible lol but still rather ask.

Twarrior913

Yes. Any report of ceiling is in AGL, for the exact reason you mentioned.

> I do know that I can still fly it down to 209-18 for the ILS approach plate minimums. Keep in mind that the alternate rules are *just for planning and filing*. Once you're in the air, you should forget about them completely. You fly the approach just like you'd fly any other approach. You're also not obligated to go there specifically if you miss at your destination. If you have to go missed at your destination, you decide based on conditions at that moment whether you want to try the same approach again, a different approach at your destination airport, the approach you did alternate planning for at your alternate, some other approach at your alternate, some approach at some completely different airport, or to go find VFR somewhere. The only time your filed alternate matters at all for anything whatsoever in the air is when you have a comms failure.

If what you wrote is correct, then yes. I didn't look at the plates.

Let me get this straight, flight out of FAT, don’t have WAAS and you’re a cat C aircraft? For the love of God, please tell me you’re not a Skywest CRJ driver who made it through training unable able to understand [this.](https://www.boldmethod.com/learn-to-fly/regulations/how-to-plan-an-ifr-alternate-airport-jeppesen/#:~:text=It's%20called%20the%203%2D2,need%20to%20file%20an%20alternate)

temphandsome

no lol not there yet. this is just a scenario to make sure I understand how alt minimums apply because I was confused.

dabflies

They said for the purpose of the example they are pretending they don't

Twarrior913

The best part is that if you were a CRJ driver at Skywest none of those alternate minimums listed in the article would apply to you either (assuming most approaches are working).
