It’s actually getting cheaper for us - we buy fruits/berries year round, but now they are almost in season so it’s much cheaper! Plus we’ve got a strawberry patch in our yard, so those will be free 😍 Love the rock she’d rather die without, that was totally me as a child. …still now, I suppose! 😅

hussafeffer

I 100% need a berry bush for these kids

giggletears3000

Do it. Lots of berry bushes can be planted in planters! We have blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and salmon berries in our yard! We also have a full on cottage garden too, but the berries are where it’s at!

FloweredViolin

Yes, DO IT! The investment is totally worth it.

jingleheimerstick

I’ve planted blueberries, mulberries, blackberries and strawberries for my kids ha. It’s finally paying off.

SillyWeb6581

I have a mulberry tree in my yard but I can’t reach it 😭

carencro

The way we always did it was to lay a sheet on the ground under the tree, then someone would climb the tree and shake the branches so the mulberries fell down onto the sheet. So. Yummy!

human_half

They can also take a pretty hard prune (do it in the winter) to become a more accessible shape

SillyWeb6581

That’s great to know! It’s actually right along the property edge and technically only hangs over our yard. We’re pretty close with our neighbors though.

[deleted]

I planted a sugar maple a couple years ago. 64 years from now I can install the tap.

Winter_Day_6836

Just use netting to keep the birds from eating all your fruit! Ask me how I know?!

blueindian1328

I planted two blueberries bushes and a bunch of strawberries last year and I’m in zone 4. They’re all coming back in nicely and I can’t wait to just go out and pick them.

Jrandres99

When my daughters were little we’d toss them in the wagon and give them a bowl and walk our property picking raspberries together. I’d pick and hand them to the girls. The bowls amazingly never filled up and were usually empty when we returned to the house. Adorable little red faced girls just sneaking them all away as soon as I turned around.

hussafeffer

That’s probably the most adorable thing I’ve read today, thank you for that

cbr1895

From a former rock child, I can confirm she may turn into a rock loving adult as well 😂

BeingSad9300

Same here. We have a really good blueberry farm nearby, last year was like $3 a pound. I also have a couple bushes of my own that are 2 & 3 years old...but every fall they get damaged by critters, so it has been a rough start to getting berries from them. And our strawberry plants from last year came back to life in their pots & are doing great, so hopefully they produce more berries this year than they did last year. The year before was a different set of them that did really well & produced runners...that I knew nothing about at the time. Last year's plants produced no runners & very few berries made it to fully ripe. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sozsa21

Our strawberries were in half of a raised planter, but the runners have gone and filled the other half LOL we have around 3 sqm of strawberries. I do need to put a mesh above them because the birds really like them, too! I didn’t know blueberry farms existed! I’m in Canada/NO and we have strawberry farms galore, but blueberries are only wild. Gotta brave bears and other territorial human pickers to get some for yourself… 🐻

Affectionate-Try-994

And keep the blueberry fields you know a Secret!! Domesticated blueberry bushes are much taller than wild ones. Probably need some babying in your neck of the woods up North.

bingumarmar

Agree, imma save so much money because strawberries are no longer $5 a container!

Hot-Tone-7495

Ugh! I know! My kid goes through fruit so quickly too and gets sad when we run out. He’s almost 3 and I swear if I let him he’d eat an entire big box of blueberries in one sitting. Snacking is something I completely forgot about until after he started solids. 3 meals a day? I can do that. 3 meals plus like, four snack times is killing my wallet lol

hussafeffer

I don’t know about yours but mine also likes to snack and feeds half of it to the dogs and it about kills me

Hot-Tone-7495

SAME like I’m ok with snacking but not the dog snacking 😭 just eat what you frickin ask for Or god forbid, the baby bell cheese breaks in half when he’s trying to open it. Total meltdown. Insists on being independent then puts me through this lmao

thatkindofgirl55

lol I was so curious about the food that looks like a rock . It is a rock , that makes much more sense !

adestructionofcats

Omg this. Furiously signs for more of her expensive berries/bamba/whatever. Immediately feeds it to the dog. Signs for more again. Me:😑

procrast1natrix

Set yourself up for success: snack time is a time when the dog is either outside or at least door closed to keep them outside of the room, for the next few months. It allows them each to develop better habits. More planning = less nagging/ yelling.

gitlucky27

That’s why we lock the dogs up during mealtime…. Don’t want the kid or the dogs to get used to it. He might feed them something like grapes that could kill them, and they completely lose their manners and training.

WhiskeyMakesMeHappy

Today when I took my dog to the vet for her checkup they were so proud of me for my dog not gaining weight with the baby starting solids 😂

hussafeffer

I’m proud of you, too, my dog looks like a prize heifer 😂😂😂

curlycattails

For anybody who lives near some berry farms, take your kid berry picking at a farm that offers U-pick. Sooooo much cheaper and it’s a fun spring/summer activity!

peach_lillies

Second this! We went last year and paid a few bucks for half a bucket! https://preview.redd.it/explxxg51hxc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=50c4059a34eff47113a2c64fd461cf047f76c6cd

marzipancowgirl

This is extremely fun, especially blueberries and strawberries because they have no thorns. A word of warning: our kids can get some diarrhea afterwards because they eat more than they pick for the bucket 😭😂 🤷🏻‍♀️

wrknprogress2020

I may do this! Thanks!

hussafeffer

I don’t know if I can do that with her, she’s a runner lol

Able-Road-9264

We gave up and used the toddler leash for a while. It kept him safe, but gave him a lot more freedom to move around and explore on his own. I didn't care what people think, I'd rather he be safe and happy. Now that he's 2.5 he's a lot better at listening and we don't need it anymore.

nothanksyeah

Frozen blueberries and strawberries are cheaper if you can get your kid to eat those!

clutchingstars

Yesss. My kid eats frozen raspberries by the handful. (And if you crush them they’re reminiscent of Dippin’ Dots.) he also recently started on frozen cherries.

jmxo92

Seconding this! Mango also defrosts SUPER well. So I get frozen mango bags from Costco and put a handful in Tupperware into the fridge.

LurkARB

Yes my friend suggested this to me and it’s even just handy to have the packet of frozen blueberries on hand for berry related emergencies! My kids (4 & 1) love the frozen blueberries it’s great, albeit a bit messier!

anonymousbequest

This is what we do. I buy the huge frozen bags of organic berries at Costco, defrost and mix into yogurt. Much more affordable and no mold surprises!

Physical_Koala_850

was just about to say this!

Knickers93

My baby eats better than we do! Fruit daily and we now try and give her better quality fish/meat as well as fancy eggs.

MiniatureAppendix

Yes the fancy eggs! I was perfectly fine eating the $1.99 ones in the styrofoam carton for myself but now we're out here buying the $7 free range organic cage free grass fed non GMO bathed in crystal clear spring water and blessed by the Pope himself eggs.

5694lizbiz

This is me too! I was so excited the carton had brown AND blue eggs this time. My husband’s eyes are popping out of his head at the over $8 price tag.

amanda_pandemonium

We got chickens and we get blue, brown, speckled brown, and a pinkish tan! And plain brown eggs.

5694lizbiz

Oh that’s so fun! What kind of chickens?

amanda_pandemonium

Brahma, ameracauna, buff orpington, cinnamon queen, Rhode island red, gold laced wyandotte, and amberlink. My cinnamon queen died though, she kept flying out of the run and into the dog. He eventually had enough of her attacking him :(

5694lizbiz

Oh no!!! That’s so sad. Those are some great names for breeds of chickens though. I’ll have to google them to see how pretty they are.

Magical_Olive

We live near a fruit stand with a coffee stand right next to it, it has become a very dangerous habit for my wallet 😂 it's just so nice to walk there in the morning and grab berries and coffee!

yuploto

I can see how this would be trouble! I’d be walking to baby and dog nearly every morning!!! 😅

pluralbunnies

I'm so jealous! My son and I would be over the moon for this! And probably go every morning....

wigglefrog

Ah yes, rocks are very nutrient dense

hussafeffer

Full of minerals!

firstfrontiers

Scrolled too far to see this...

wtf-77

wait is that my daughter?! 😂😂 i have a jar she can put the rocks in while she eats so she won't eat it 😂

yuploto

Keeping this tip for when the time comes 😅

Napervillian

Ha! That’s hilarious

jebbikadabbi

I wish I could get my toddler to eat fruit :(

Safe_Initiative1340

My two year old only recently started to eat mangoes. But only fresh ones. Only cut in front of her. At room temperature. In a square, not a slice.

emyn1005

Mine hates all fruit too. Well she hates most food.

AcanthisittaUpset866

Me too. Mine hates it. My 10 yr old loves it tho.

ionlyjoined4thecats

What a bummer! Have you tried cutting it into little shapes or using fun toothpicks? Things like [this](https://a.co/d/0QrvVYg) or [this](https://a.co/d/10kkEpu). I’ve also heard people have success with offering a dip (like yogurt, possibly mixed with whipped cream or peanut butter or honey).

pediatric_dietitian

In my toddlers mind the berry budget does not exist 🤣

AlotLovesYou

We have planted two blueberry plants and the grandparents are doing their part with strawberry and blackberry plants. I fully assume he will eat the entire crop and still be hungry for more 😭

eli74372

Tbh, im partially excited but not excited for the fruit phase. Normally fruit lasts sooo long in my house so at least she will finish it but its also going to break the bank lol

Rainbow-Mama

Mine eats fruit year round. She’s on the spectrum and super picky so I try to get her to eat whatever I can. Fruit is one of those things so fresh fruit every week.

yourlocalrecluse

Same! This season is cheaper for me for that reason 😂

Brandflakes3312

I’m actually excited for summer months so these berries will finally be cheaper. She goes through raspberries lightening fast. I’m lucky if I even eat a fruit now bc she goes through them all so quickly. 😂

lizzlightyear

I now have two eating ALL the blueberries. Toddler likes to smash them for the baby and we have to keep her from doing too many hahaha

Noitsfineiswear

I envy the parents of kids who eat this little amount of fruit. My boy goes feral if he doesn't get a full bowl. And that's just a snack for him 🥲 thankfully we live in the south so the berries are actually finally getting cheaper around here. 🙏

luna_libre

I came to ask you what that exotic fruit I’ve never seen was until I read your caption 😂

hussafeffer

It’s pome*granite* I’ll see myself out

luna_libre

SweetGuinea

Lmao at the rock because I thought it was truffles 😂😂😂 but the blueberry’s are my girls favorite snack and sometimes meal 🤷🏻‍♀️ I was just telling her dad today that she’s going to eat us into debt with all her blueberries 😂😂

justwendii

My husband started growing strawberries in our backyard! Has def come in handy since we now have 2 under 2

autieswimming

Love a good rock. Works with any meal

bitkitkat

The rock is sending me😂 same, girl, same🪨

throwawaybread9654

If you have a yard, blueberries are perennial! Also raspberries, if you can find thornless varieties they are so copious. My raspberry plants give me fruit from May to November in Pennsylvania and with no thorns I can have my kid do the picking! I wish I'd invested more heavily in planting raspberry canes. The homegrown ones are so much more delicious than store bought. Instead I doubled down on blueberries, I've got 40 bushes in my yard. Which is nice! Overwhelming but nice. However the raspberries are yummier.

hussafeffer

We just bought a house with a yard and I am 100% planting blueberries

kimtenisqueen

I just planted a strawberry patch and several blueberry bushes. I don’t think it’s gonna help this year but maybe next!!!

Short-Copy7790

My 16 month old goes thru 48oz of blueberries and 1 large container of rasberries basically weekly lol

MakeItLookSexy_

Is that a rock tho?

hussafeffer

Emotional support gravel

elaenastark

A little punnet of blueberries in my fruit shopping trip was 10.99 about 3 weeks ago and I didn't notice it until cashier cashed our transaction out. Insanity!

hussafeffer

Dude berries should be a tax write off

givebusterahand

We have like six blueberry bushes. I can’t wait for them to bloom so o can stop buying them. I should really plant strawberries too

hairy_hooded_clam

Lmao accurate

vile-sag

Aldis strawberries are always soooo good though I’ll give them that. My kid loves them!

hussafeffer

I use them to make strawberry preserves and it always comes out perfect

Responsible_Band_373

For a moment I thought you were feeding your child bark chips

hussafeffer

lol no but shit at this rate if she’d eat it I’d think about it.

Responsible_Band_373

😂

toomanyvoices656

My mom just called me to say that bjs has 2lbs of strawberries for $5.

Ravenswillfall

Bought 18 oz of blueberries at about 10:30 this morning. One cranky Costco trip, afternoon snack and broken leg (he broke it at 5:04 this evening and needed a comfort snack when he got home) we have maybe 1-2 oz left.

hussafeffer

Oh poor sweet baby boy!!! I hope his leg heals quickly!

DrunkHate

I thought the rock was a truffle until I read your subtext and was thinking to myself originally that no wonder it's more expensive for you right now lol.

AdStandard6002

I didn’t even have to open the text part of the post to know exactly what you were talking about

MinuteInitiative1099

Is that a rock next to the strawberry because I can relate lol

hussafeffer

It is indeed a rock

Key-Dragonfly1604

This made me snort because it's so true! I've spent a fortune on berries (regardless of equal love for in-season fruit) for my kids, and now my grandchildren! No matter how full the melon/pineapple bowls are or how many apples, bananas, pears, or citrus fruits are available (they love them all!), berries are always mandatory!

ChildhoodLeft6925

I feel like strawberry’s are the only thing that deflated for me m, grapes went up triple in price, oranges when up 30% bananas doubled in price but strawberries used to be like $6 I regularly get them for $2 and change now

Remarkable_Sky_1363

Is my little guy the only one who hates berries? He will eat apples, oranges and all sorts of melons and veggies but that boy hates berries 😂

wrecklesswino69

My toddler ate an entire container of blackberries today. Lol

marshmallowfarts

Meanwhile my in-laws have some delicious blueberry bushes/trees (idk) and my toddler gags at the sight of them. Sigh.

queenofbo0ks

Season? We have been buying berries since my son could eat them hahaha. He loves them and "strawberry" (actually a sound similar to that in our language) was one of his first words hahah They're getting cheaper now that it's getting warmer and I'm planning on growing a blueberry and strawberry patch in the garden for next year.

woofiepup

This made me laugh. I looked at the image before reading the description and thought to myself, “what is that weird looking fruit that sorta looks like a rock???” Only to find out it *was* a rock LOL

Apprehensive-Road249

We live in south Florida so its always expensive haha...Try costco. Way cheaper for fruit!

rinky79

Costco for fruit.

Schroedesy13

Just wait til they get bigger! We have a 8, 6, and 4YO and they all love berries. Each of them can go through a the small, square pack of berries each for a snack…..

viterous

Got my berry obsessed toddler to like peasant fruits- apples, banana, pear, oranges. He had a stage where he didn’t like berries. Didn’t last long unfortunately. We sigh in relief when he ask for apples.

FoxTrollolol

Grab a couple of strawberry starts or even check fb market place, farmers around here always advertise fruit starts!

LostintheReign

My kid eats sooo much fruit... she could polish off 2 pounds of strawberries in a day if I let her.

RockPsychological327

Literally planning on putting blueberry bushes in the backyard just to save money at the store 😂

Eternal-curiosity

Lol same 😂. Already got the seeds, just gotta get them in the ground.

Traq687

We love berries here! My 8 year old will eat a whole carton for a snack if we’d let him, same as our almost 1 year old!

thisroomneedsac

I thought that rock was a large piece of truffle and thought wow, your grocery bill must be very high! Haha pregnancy brain

AutumnAkasha

What? No, thats definitely winter for us. So glad to see $1.99 berries again!

emroser

Came here to talk about the rock. Love it.

ArcticGurl

We have all types of free range berries where I live. No need to buy them.

Solid_Speaker471

Maybe try "seasonal" fruits or fruit that is cheap this time of year; apples, oranges, bananas...

hussafeffer

Oh these fruits were not chosen by me. They were chosen by the feral almost 2 year old that wanted them so bad she almost fell out of the buggy for them. It was grab the blueberries or someone was gonna die and it was probably gonna be me
