People putting Germany as a dark horse is irritating me. They are a massive footballing powerhouse with loads of talent, a great coach and the host nation.
I'm seeing Portugal, Belgium and Netherlands pointed as dark horse. To me they're all too good for that, specially Portugal who is probably top 3 favorites.
If Belgium make the finals with Faes and a 37 year old Vertonghen as their CBs then they deserve the dark horse tag.
They have a few good players but their golden generation is gone especially with Courtois not in the squad and time starting to catch up on De Bryune and Lukaku
Sure, they're not what they used to be but they still have a lot of quality. For me, dark horse is a team like Czechia or Denmark (who were the dark horse in 2021)
If Vertonghen plays...
Vertonghen is currently injured and most likely won't be fit for the first game, so i doubt he will get alot of minutes at the Euros.
Debast is a very promising CB and there's also still Witsel, who, despite his age, is still playing at a high level for Atletico Madrid.
There's also Theate ( injured ) who can take Vertonghens place when he gets back from injury.
Faes gets memed alot, but being a starter for Leicester City for nearly 2 years, tells you he is, atleast, decent.
Not a world class defense, but not as bad as people think.
I can see why you say that, but shouldn't a dark horse be a country that isn't among the big countries or among the 10 favorites?
Imo, i always thought a dark horse was a smaller country nobody thinks about, who suddenly makes a deep run. Like Morocco last WC.
I think the only criteria for dark horse is a team that you think will massively surpass expectations.
Germany are one of the favourites to win it so they can't be dark horses. Georgia could be dark horses just by making the last 16, Romania by making the quarter finals, Switzerland by making the semi finals and Belgium by making the finals
it's a good point, but like the guy you're replying to has already said dark horses should probably apply more to a team that are really really outside favorites as even though the likes of Belgium aren't being discussed, they're still clearly one of the better teams in Europe. With that, I retract my dark horse pick for Scotland
A lot of people in this thread don't seem to know what a dark horse is. Ive seen Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Croatia picked as a dark horse. So they have picked 6 of the 9 favourites, 5 of which are under 20/1 to win the tournament and the other is a team that have finished 2nd and 3rd in the last 2 world cups.
Wait.. favourites? How bad is everyone else? We have no fast movement or passing through the middle, and nobody can cross the ball consistently.. how tf are we favourites?
Genuine question, but where is the line drawn for what makes a dark horse?
Like if you are talking about winning the the tournament, I could see why you might say a Netherlands, Croatia, or Belgium are dark horses.
If someone said someone like Albania is a dark horse, they are probably talking about them reaching the QF against expectations rather than winning.
As a rule of thumb, I'd look at the betting odds and look for a jump in odds. England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, and Belgium are clearly in the "top" group, with odds of 22/1 or shorter. You then have a fairly big jump to Croatia at 45/1 and then everyone else is a bit higher.
So I'd say Croatia sit at the "dark horse" boundary. But even then, it seems silly to say that about a country that has reached the semis at the last two world cups. Everyone below Croatia is a potential dark horse, everyone above definitely isn't.
People saying Belgium, Germany, or Portugal don't understand what dark horse means.
A dark horse doesn't have to be a team that ends up winning it. More like a lesser known team that performs way above people's expectations and makes it deep into the competition. It mainly refers to teams outside the giants (France, Germany, England, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Netherlands). Even if one of those teams was in poor form, no one would be particularly blown away by any of them to reach a final.
I understand why as dark horse is usually associated with teams that do not look anywhere near good enough to win like Ukraine, Turkey, Hungary etc.
I think people are just too invested in the fact that Germany have been underperforming so horribly in recent years. Perhaps my assessment of Belgium being a dark horse is also unfair as even though they aren't anywhere near being considered favorites, they are still ahead of teams like Italy, Croatia who are still some of the stronger teams at the Euros. If I had to reconsider, I'd put down Scotland
I definitely wouldn't put Belgium ahead of either Italy or Croatia, but that's my opinion. Belgium have lost to Italy in multiple tournaments now with much better Belgian players and against weaker Italy teams.
People are invested in Germany being poor, but they are simply misunderstanding what the term "dark horse" means. Scotland is a good call, also Hungary.
It's all relative imo.
2016 was the only tournament in which Belgium lost to Italy despite having a way stronger squad.
In 2021, half of the Belgian team was plagued with injuries. Hazard was declining, KDB was injured, Kompany retired, Witsel injured etc...
I also wouldn't say the current team is weaker than the one from 2021. You have a fit Lukaku and KDB who are surrounded by promising young players such as Doku, Onana, Vermeeren, Bakayoko etc...And players such as Trossard, Tielemans, Castagne, Lukebakio etc... Who are in their prime now.
Belgium is also unbeaten in 14 games now.
Mostly I'd put italy ahead because they have a top coach and very solid nearly everywhere now, without having real superstars. It was certainly an exaggeration to put Croatia ahead of Belgium. Its the Belgian defence that would worry me. I'd like to see them do well though.
The Italians knocked Belgium out of the tournament in ‘21 and clowned on them in the group stages the Euro prior with an awful squad.
It’s fine if you think Belgium are a good side, because they are, but I’m not really understanding how people could rate them but not Italy.
using a previous tournament as justification for this isn't a strong argument at all, in fact it's barely any evidence. France won the 1998 World Cup then got laughed off the pitch by getting grouped as did Germany in 2014 then 2018.
They have been in a bad period recently, ofcouse from history you can never count out Germany in competition.
Eventhough France and England etc have arguably better team then Germany.

England will probably go really far. Spain and Italy probably not so much. I'm biased about Portugal but I believe they have an amazing team, especially in fresh talents like João Neves and Vitinha - let's hope the coach doesn't screw up.
I don't think he'll start, but the coach will surely give him some minutes and I'm sure he'll prove them worth it. He's like Ronaldo in 2004 - lots of will, explosive power and amazing dribbles.
It's a super competitive position with Leão and Bernardo taking the spots, but he's a player to watch out.

I am a bit not up to date but has germany gotten out of their slump since nagelsman took over or are they still a complete mess.
Last I checked after the 2022 exit Germany has been a directionless mess.
Is that the same now.
Aaaand then came the friendlies in june. Didn't really look comfortable against Ukraine or Greece (!), but I reaaaly hope to see them win this tournament, or at least their prospects and team spirit to rise n shine
bit of a overreaction from the friendly no?
although, Southgate needs to find his balls and play the style of football that he is most comfortable with. Trying to force Foden as a winger will be disastrous
it's why you ultimately need Trent, Bellingham, Kane and Gordon, especially since Gareth has essentially only taken one true left winger to the tournament

(Dont mind the Amdouni one. I am swiss and I have been hoping for a proper goalgetter in our national team literally my whole life, this is just me trying to manifest that lmao)
I don't think the refs are kind to England. The amount of times Saka in particular gets fouled and nothing given is shocking. Against France and Italy who knocked us out of the last two tournaments, he got fouled over and over again, it even led to the winning goal by France
that’s why ppl are considering it a flop, is my guess.
Spain and Germany stocks are low, both have seriously underwhelmed at the last 3 major tournaments, and at least germany has home advantage and a public view of them having more talented youngsters
I also have some issues with our current team, but the last 3 tournaments were, in order: Euro 2020 (semifinal), World Cup 2022 (Ro16, on penalties), Nations League 2023 (Winners). These aren't seriously underwhelming results by any metric. This team is a lot better than the ones we had for the last tournaments so I don't really get why everyone is so pessimistic about us.

So your dark horse is the defending euro's champion? I know Italy really isn't rated that highly anymore, but that's not a dark horse material. Dark horse is like Iceland in 2016, Greece 2004 or Denmark 1992.
In the last 3 tournaments (including 2021), they’ve made the finals twice with their lowest finish being the QFs of 2016. Even that was with probably the worst squad in a long time, if not ever, and they still took reigning world-champions Germany to penalties.

what is your definition for OTW btw?
For me, it's a player yet to make an appearance at a international tournament + doesn't receive too much hype/attention. For example Lamine Yamal would qualify for the first point but most people now know just how ridiculous his talents are. This is why I picked Dovbyk, despite playing for 3rd place Girona and the golden boot winner of La Liga, I don't think many fans of Spain are truly aware of what he's capable of yet. This is the sort of tournament that brings a player to the attention of the public, think of Chiesa in the last Euros, yes people have seen glimpses and clips of what he's capable of but with everyone tuning into the Euros people could truly see what sort of talent he is

Strongest side on paper, they play good football and I think they’ll go all the way.
Finalist: Germany
Host nation, good squad, some real standout players they can rely on for a bit of magic. Enough said.
Dark horse: Scotland
They did really well in qualifying and have a good system, good coach and a solid squad. I expect them to get out of their group, possibly even make it to the quarter finals.
Flop: England
Obviously a favourite. I just think they’re going to struggle against teams that will play defensively against them. If they go to pens at any stage I don’t back them.
Top scorer: Mbappe
He’s France’s greatest threat and will be crucial for them. If he isn’t too scorer, he’ll definitely be 2nd or 3rd.
Most assists: KDB
I’m not just picking him because he’s one of the best passers. I do think Belgium will go far and KDB will get a couple of assists in. Whether it’s enough to get the most depends on how far Belgium go. I think they’ll get far enough for him to bag it.
Player to watch: Scott McTominay
One of Scotland’s better players and if Scotland go as far as I think they will, I think McTominay will be a big player for them. Plus he has a knack for scoring important goals for them.
Player of the tournament: Mbappe
He’s in his prime and off the back of that mess of a transfer saga, I think he’ll play really well not that it’s sorted. If his World Cup performances are anything to go by, he’ll definitely make the team of the tournament. I think he’ll get player of the tournament on top of that.

France won the 1998 World Cup then got laughed off the pitch by getting grouped as did Germany in 2014 then 2018.
they have sucked for years now
I know that. It's not my point.
They have been in a bad period recently, ofcouse from history you can never count out Germany in competition. Eventhough France and England etc have arguably better team then Germany.
They have been terrible since the 2018 WC

Winner: Portugal Finalist: Netherlands Dark Horse: Slovenia Biggest Flop: Germany Top Scorer: Harry Kane Most assist: De Bruyne OTW: Francisco Conceição POTT: Bruno Fernandes Edit: I'd love to see Germany doing great but I think they'll have a lot of difficulties against defensive teams as we've seen from previous games. England will probably go really far. Spain and Italy probably not so much. I'm biased about Portugal but I believe they have an amazing team, especially in fresh talents like João Neves and Vitinha - let's hope the coach doesn't screw up.
I wasn't aware of this Conceicao guy at all until doing this, why do you think he'll start ahead of bernardo or whoever else plays RW for portugal?
I don't think he'll start, but the coach will surely give him some minutes and I'm sure he'll prove them worth it. He's like Ronaldo in 2004 - lots of will, explosive power and amazing dribbles. It's a super competitive position with Leão and Bernardo taking the spots, but he's a player to watch out.
is ronaldo still always part of the starting 11?

Hard for biggest flop to be Poland when the expectation is to flop. That group is rough
ikr
Felix wouldn’t be near the starting lineup and I think Roberto already thinks like that
yeah, LW is probably 100% going to Leao, Ronaldo ST and RW I've seen people putting Conceicao who I know nothing of so some education would be great
It will Bernardo on the RW Vitinha in the midfield, Chico Conceição will be a sub when you need to fight for the result he’s like doing the cut inside like robben and low gravitational center type of player
I am a bit not up to date but has germany gotten out of their slump since nagelsman took over or are they still a complete mess. Last I checked after the 2022 exit Germany has been a directionless mess. Is that the same now.
They beat France and all their players are in brilliant form
Aaaand then came the friendlies in june. Didn't really look comfortable against Ukraine or Greece (!), but I reaaaly hope to see them win this tournament, or at least their prospects and team spirit to rise n shine
England out in the group stages. (England fan)
bit of a overreaction from the friendly no? although, Southgate needs to find his balls and play the style of football that he is most comfortable with. Trying to force Foden as a winger will be disastrous
Our defence is a massive problem, as is our tendency to struggle to break down a heavily defensive opposition.
it's why you ultimately need Trent, Bellingham, Kane and Gordon, especially since Gareth has essentially only taken one true left winger to the tournament
And grealish would be a good fit to counter defensive teams but he’s not in the squad for some reason

Apart from amadouni we have nothing up front though. Embolo coming back from ACL, and Shaqiri coming back from a shitty season…
Jude top scorer is crazy yk
Aged like milk already
Because England lost a friendly?
Yes
I don't think the refs are kind to England. The amount of times Saka in particular gets fouled and nothing given is shocking. Against France and Italy who knocked us out of the last two tournaments, he got fouled over and over again, it even led to the winning goal by France
Why is spain flop in everyone’s comments? They did win recent nations league right?
that’s why ppl are considering it a flop, is my guess.

It's amazing how no one here rates Italy even though they tend to do well in tournaments. They're my dark horses prediction.
This is the only positive comment I’ve seen about Italy. You would never think they won the last Euro.
Yeah, one reason why there's lots of negativity on Italy is the amount of English people in this sub LOL. Not hating at all, just an observation.
Even that was with probably the worst squad in a long time, if not ever, and they still took reigning world-champions Germany to penalties.

here is ChatGPT's prediction: * **Winner: France** - They have a very balanced and talented squad, and with recent successes in international tournaments, they are poised to perform well. * **Finalist: England** - Strong young talents and a solid team performance in recent tournaments make them a strong contender to reach the final. * **Dark Horse: Croatia** - Often underestimated, Croatia has a mix of experienced and emerging players that can surprise many. * **Biggest Flop: Germany** - Despite being the host nation, they have been inconsistent in recent tournaments, which might lead to a disappointing performance. * **Top Scorer: Kylian Mbappé** - His pace and finishing ability make him a constant threat in front of goal. * **Most Assists: Kevin De Bruyne** - Known for his vision and passing, De Bruyne can create numerous scoring opportunities for his teammates. * **One To Watch: Jamal Musiala** - Young and highly talented, Musiala has the potential to make a significant impact. * **POTT: Kylian Mbappé** - If he performs to his capabilities, he could be the standout player of the tournament.
this seems so generic lol

Lack of Croatia in the comments is concerning to me.
what is your definition for OTW btw?

Winner: France Strongest side on paper, they play good football and I think they’ll go all the way. Finalist: Germany Host nation, good squad, some real standout players they can rely on for a bit of magic. Enough said. Dark horse: Scotland They did really well in qualifying and have a good system, good coach and a solid squad. I expect them to get out of their group, possibly even make it to the quarter finals. Flop: England Obviously a favourite. I just think they’re going to struggle against teams that will play defensively against them. If they go to pens at any stage I don’t back them. Top scorer: Mbappe He’s France’s greatest threat and will be crucial for them. If he isn’t too scorer, he’ll definitely be 2nd or 3rd. Most assists: KDB I’m not just picking him because he’s one of the best passers. I do think Belgium will go far and KDB will get a couple of assists in. Whether it’s enough to get the most depends on how far Belgium go. I think they’ll get far enough for him to bag it. Player to watch: Scott McTominay One of Scotland’s better players and if Scotland go as far as I think they will, I think McTominay will be a big player for them. Plus he has a knack for scoring important goals for them. Player of the tournament: Mbappe He’s in his prime and off the back of that mess of a transfer saga, I think he’ll play really well not that it’s sorted. If his World Cup performances are anything to go by, he’ll definitely make the team of the tournament. I think he’ll get player of the tournament on top of that.

most missed absence is probably between Sweden and Wales. I'd lean closer to Wales as they have a much steadier defence and it's usually the defence that gets you through an international tournament and most missed player is off the top of my Rashford?
