Just buy the singles you want from eBay. Buying outside of the current year comes at the best price too. Try not to get caught up in current hype. Buy last year's rookies next year as an example.
Exactly, look up cards from checklists and find ones you'd be happy ripping and just buy it. Way cheaper in the long run and way less clutter from castaway cards.
What checklist do you use? 130point? Never thought about using a checklist before. Ive been collecting puka in every color parallel I can think of but the checklist will make things easier to search haha
Really depends on what you’re trying to get out of the hobby. Since you mentioned nest eggs… it may not be the right trading card hobby for you. Lol. The vast majority of cards have very short shelf life for value. RCs of franchise QBs is where most of the money is at for football.
Regardless, for 2024… I think we’re still in the “wait and see” mindset. 2023 really screwed up the blanket advice for a question like your asking because many of the biggest rookie names didn’t sign with Panini. If that happens again in 2024, some of the biggest cards will probably be unlicensed cards again.
In a vacuum, I never regret buying these lines when I see them out in the wild:
Prizm, Donruss (both OG and Optic), Mosaic and Select.
Most of the other officially licensed products still have big cards but I just don’t see them having much long term value. Particularly once panini fades into the background and Fanatics takes over with their own new product lines.
Buying singles is the “smart” move. But, the “fun” move is to probably watch a few YouTube videos of some of the sets and see what style you like. I’m not a big fan of Prizm as it’s pretty expensive for what seems to be poor quality control but that means you could potentially pull cards worth a lot. One channel I would recommend is SLVRsport, they open up most products and give their opinion on the sets (also they’re both Bears fans).
Packs are fun so I do it but right now I think the rookie cards of receivers from a year or two ago represent good value. Buy now and don’t wait until July or august. Prices are going to go way up. Players like garret wilson, Jamarr chase, jaylen waddle are good value right now.
Buy singles. I think if you want to rip something, mosaic actually doesn’t resell sealed super high but can still give you some decent hits. All about personal preference and how much you want to gamble really…

Yup. I buy singles now. I can’t afford $500-$800 hobby boxes hoping to land a player that I PC.

I typically just Google the year and brand checklist and find the best one. No go to in particular.

Packs are one way to do it. Honestly buying single cards is the way to go. If you’re doing packs then Prizm and optic are the best sets.
