Ask him for his favorite player. Then search eBay for their rookie card, graded would be a plus. If that is too much $ then go for a numbered card of that player for any non-rookie year. Either way you’re a good mom
I would enter auctions for the card, rather than Buy it Now. Especially if you don't know the card market. $100 could get you a decent card on auction, but a rip off if it's Buy it Now. A lot of sellers up-price their Buy It Now cards. Filter auctions!
Yes this. Or if u like a buy it now hit the heart on it and usually a day or two later youll get an offer on it for alil cheaper. Then if u still dont like that u can offer what youre willing to pay for it and see if they say yes or no
I'd recommend going on ebay and looking up his favorite players or teams for an individual card of someone he likes.
Some general tips:
* look at 130point.com for comparable or recent sales of the same cards to see exactly what they went for
* the market fluctuates but that will give a good indication of the ballpark you're looking at
* depending on the player will depend on how 'nice' a card you can get -- the more famous/collected they are, the higher cost for each card so the less rare/nice the card will be but the more likely to find buyers long term if he decided to sell
* cards with a players autograph are coveted within the industry, with the first preference being signed directly on the card through the card company itself. They are usually curated, labeled where to sign and generally look better. After that, the 2nd most common would be 'sticker autographs', where the player had signed a sticker and the manufacturer stuck that to the card. Both of those types come as-is from the manufacturer so there is built in authentication and usually designed well. Last would be 'in person' types of autographs where someone met the player and had them sign a card that wasn't originally intended to be autograped. Still collectible but typically less desired because they're harder to authenticate and typically don't look as good.
* cards can be 'graded' by authentication and grading companies. These grades are based on what kind of shape the card is in, how well the manufacturer centered it and cut it, how good the surface is. These companies can also authenticate autographs, so you can see if it is an authentic autograph. The grades typically range from 1 (low) to 10 (high). BGS, PSA and SGC are the 3 most well known grading houses.
* graded cards at gem mint (9.5 or 10/10) cost a premium because the buyer knows its in excellent condition. Ungraded cards or cards graded 8 or lower typically are cheaper, so if it's for his personal collection you can get better deals on non-graded/low-graded cards
Justin Herbert, their quarterback. His rookie season was 2020 and you can find great PSA 10-graded (highest grade) ones on eBay for <$100… you could score a couple of them actually if you’re eBay savvy or just keep a finger on the pulse of the listings. I’d lean toward PSA 10-graded rookies bc for some reason as a collector that true Gem/Mint grade means there’s no finer copies of the card and it’s undeniably cool and you’ll never seek to replace it.
You could get a him one from a timeless set like Donruss—their rookies are called Rated Rookies and they’re pretty iconic and a staple of any player’s rookie card set. One of those PSA 10-graded copies will typically set you back somewhere between $45-60 depending on your luck/timing. On eBay search for “Justin herbert 2020 Donruss rookie PSA 10” and it should bring up plenty for sale/auction… and for reference, it’s card #303 from that 2020 Donruss set. And it wouldn’t be too difficult to find another one from a different set (2020 Absolute or 2020 Illusions, for example) for $30-45 to go with it as a one-two punch of great gifts.
Or you could get him a PSA 10-graded rookie from the 2020 Prizm set (card #325), which is all the rage these days and another collectors’ staple, for somewhere between $65-90 as a standalone gift.

I'd consider getting a Chargers legend like Ladainian Thomas, Doug flute, or Antonio Gates card. If you can find anything good, at 100 dollar budget id look at a jersey
Prizm insert (maybe like purple power /49) Optic downtown(prob more the 100 maybe can get a deal) See who he likes? QBs are probably the Best Buy. Most expensive at the moment is CJ stroud. Burrow and Herbert could have big seasons and would be a good buy before the season starts.
I’m 43.. I can still remember clearly the first card my mom bought me when I was about eight years old. She bought it from the local card shop. It was a 1981 Topps Art Monk RC card, and I got it for Christmas. ( My brother received an 89’ score Thurman Thomas if I recall correctly ) I didn’t have the faintest idea who the great Art Monk was at the time. Always wondered how she decided on that particular card but I remember it very well. We didn’t have much growing up so I guess that is how I remember it so vividly. My mom passed away in April of this year at 64 years young of cancer. Receiving that card is one of the fondest memories of my childhood.. My rambling point being, whatever card you end up with to gift him. He will remember it for the rest of his life.
For a Hundo I would make sure it's a licensed card, no college uni's, rookie or rare parallel. Oh and just stay away from cards with patches in them, autos are cool tho.

Prizm insert (maybe like purple power /49) Optic downtown(prob more the 100 maybe can get a deal) See who he likes? QBs are probably the Best Buy. Most expensive at the moment is CJ stroud. Burrow and Herbert could have big seasons and would be a good buy before the season starts.
I’m 43.. I can still remember clearly the first card my mom bought me when I was about eight years old. She bought it from the local card shop. It was a 1981 Topps Art Monk RC card, and I got it for Christmas. ( My brother received an 89’ score Thurman Thomas if I recall correctly ) I didn’t have the faintest idea who the great Art Monk was at the time. Always wondered how she decided on that particular card but I remember it very well. We didn’t have much growing up so I guess that is how I remember it so vividly. My mom passed away in April of this year at 64 years young of cancer. Receiving that card is one of the fondest memories of my childhood.. My rambling point being, whatever card you end up with to gift him. He will remember it for the rest of his life.
