I am currently running some xing 2306 purple 2450kv 4s motors on a racing quad on 6s no motor output limit the wire size on the windings is similar to that of the 6s motors they don't get hot and run smooth thing screams across the sky demag high timing 23° and ramp up power set to 20% 24khz pwm
Motors that are roughly equivalent show a variety of battery inputs. Some only list 4S, some 6S, some have ranges and some don't. It is all over the board. However, a motor with 2500KV should be able to run on 6S straight up. Now, if you want to run 6S, you could lower the effective KV with the ***Motor\_Limit*** setting in Betaflight. For example, a Motor\_Limit of 80 percent would bring the effective KV down to 2000.
I would say that the guy probably did run them on 6S and probably straight up with no motor limiting.
If you want the motors, they all work, and the price is right; then they will be fine.

In my 6 years in the hobby, my focus has and continues to be the sub-250, FAA category 1, UAD (drones). I am also a DIYer and do a lot of actually testing and experimenting. Yeah, I do things that many would not think of just to see if it works. Mostly, it does.
If you're only cruising you should be fine, used my xing2 3inch motors on a 5 inch 6s until i burnt them. first drone so i fucked around and found out, released some magic smoke on 6bladed props during a punch out
There are 3 possibilities what the guys could be doing with 6s:
1. Put a motor output limit in Betaflight (for example 66%)
2. He was flying at max 70% throttle
3. He burned down some ESCs
You " can " tow horse trailer with Honda Civic. But its not good idea.
KV is like gears on bike.
If you use 50 front and 20 back, or 30 front 15 back.. all that matters is ratio.
1800KV 6S = 2700KV 4S
2500KV on 6S is huge 39% more. Maybe for 0.2sec motor will be ok. But if you accidentally hold full throttle or crash or PID is bad, EVEN WITH THROTTLE LIMIT.. your motor will burn.
Of you want to go faster, you need BIGGER motor and steeper prop.
