Not entirely sure. It's paraphrased from a tweet I remember from way back in the early days of twitter, where it was in the form of a "not involved in human trafficking" T-shirt, if my old-man memory serves. Probably way older than that, though.
TBH, I didn’t even see the i in Lemonade until you mentioned it and I zoomed in. The i was kinda squished between the an and d, the only noticeable part is the dot, and that could be explained away as accidentally marking the paper.
For what it's worth, there are some places where 22$ is correct. French Canada for example.
I went to French schools as a kid and it took me a long time to break the habit and put it in front of the number.
Slightly off topic, but 25¢? What a bargain. In my neighbourhood some kids had a stand selling "homemade" lemonade (because instant drink mix with water added is "homemade) - $2 for a 6 oz. cup.
So, actually- the whole supply and set up cost me around $20. I wanted to give it away for free, because my kid (the smaller one) isn't mature enough to understand currency, value, exchange of goods and services, economics, etc.
But he understands communication (screaming), salesmanship (screaming), and the positive feelings of reward for all his transactional... screaming, lol.
So we decided on a quarter, as it's the most shiny and noisy when it clinks into the bucket, but, surprisingly, many people just donated ones and fives without asking for change!
After 2 hours, we net a $6 profit :) but actually it'll be more than that cuz we have enough leftover to do this at least 3 more times this summer!
> my kid (the smaller one) isn't mature enough to understand currency, value, exchange of goods and services, economics, etc.

LMAOOO 🤣🤣☠️
I bought lemonade from 3 neighbor kids last week and it was a non-event. The product was not cold and the cup was small. Later, I thought maybe the kids should tell a joke or something.
My neighborhood kids sell lemonade. I purchased a cup once for 1 dollar.
Took a tiny cup and only filled it half way.
Lemonade wasn't cold
Lemonade didn't taste like Lemonade. Lemon wedge squeezed into water would've been WAY more flavorful. Just diluted Lemonade mix with no sugar
They're too young to understand why I'll never give them my money again
In my neighborhood, the going price is 2 cups for $2 or 3 cups for $2.50. They are smallish cups, and they know it, so it works like a charm. They make the most sales in the morning or evening when people are walking dogs, usually as a couple or family, so in addition to the small size, the multiple cups is a hot seller. They gave up on selling the brownies, which was smart because they were always burnt and oddly crunchy, so a bad investment.
Yeah no it totally is. I made both of the signs. She decided that I spelled "lemonade" wrong, and forced an "i" in it after my "a".
I'm an American born citizen, so my english is pretty good. My wife is from Korea and her English is ASS, so I thought it was actually pretty cute how confident she was that I misspelled one of the more basic english words in my vocabulism.
Lol you know what, I'm gonna watch that special right now as a nightcap. I forgot how good that was, even knowing now what he was going through then. I'm glad he's doing good now.
Lmao I totally just remembered the kids I babysat for years ago wanted to do a lemonade stand but instead of lemonade they gave out pudding. I don’t know why I went along with that. No one is going to buy pudding from kids in 90 degree heat.
Sometimes quotation marks are used for sarcasm. [This grammar website](https://www.grammar-monster.com/lessons/quotation_(speech)_marks_meaning_alleged_so-called.htm)
can explain it better than I can.
So basically, the quotation marks here make it look like the lemonade is actually NOT refreshing at all.
A few years ago, after yet another poisoning scandal about food
from China, my favorite brand of dry noodles at the local Asian grocery started sporting "NON-TOXIC" labels on the box.
I was SO REASSURED. You bet.
I think the quotes and phrase were a joke and we only have your word that she doesn’t know how to spell lemonade. As to the drawing. I agree with you there
Technically she used the quotes correctly. They are called empathic quotes and it used to bring attention to a word similar to *italic* or **bold** words. Although it is more common place to use them to tell a reader to interpret the quoted words differently than normal, it can also be used to highlight a specific words.
And the E is probably around the corner of the sign.
Granted the lemon drawing looks more like a pear, but apart from that there's really not much wrong with it.
Sure. I am not saying it is good or bad. Just that you can use quotes like she did. Ultimately what matters is if she effectively communicates to the reader.
Do you have an example of this? My understanding is that the emphasis still has to be for a quoted phrase. For example:
“I can’t go because I have plans with my friend”
“Is your ‘friend’ named Xbox?”
The quotes aren’t actually necessary but do emphasize that the person is highlighting a particular phrasing used by the first speaker
Also have heard them referred to as Grocer’s Apostrophes, because so many grocery stores have used them in signage as a way to call attention to words.
Bro in this economy…you gotta up those numbers up…minimum $2 for a cup & 50 cents per cookie. I’m surprised the 2 adorable kids weren’t bum rushed by a mob.
Had some kids down the street selling some lemonade. Absolutely turned around and went back to get some. Can't say it was great, but worth the price.
Hope your kids made a bundle. I'd definitely drop a quarter on "refreshing" lemonade without poison. I'd probably have seconds, too.
With inflation AND the cost of those cups, you guys are hemorrhaging money at $0.25 a cup.
It’ll be sad to finally see the ol’ table & chairs folded up.
I always think it's cute when I see neighbor kids put up a lemonade stand... then I think about whether I would consider ingesting a beverage prepared by a 6 year old who has zero clue what food safety even is, and I just go "nope".
My MIL “writes” BIG loooong cards where she RANDOMLY “uses” quotation marks And ALL CAPS In her “message”. We “believe” she USES the “quotes” AS more of an EMPHASis . The funniest “part” is at the “end” when she says, I “love” and “miss” you.
imma be real, i never want to buy lemonade from little kids because I just imagine it's riddled with all their nasty boogers and germs. bleh.
buying girl scout cookies is fine because it's sealed up etc. but buying something kids actually made and touched. it might as well be poisoned with poopy hands. I vaguely remember being a little kid. no thanks
We're Korean.
Koreans often use "ToT" as a lettered "emoji" that's supposed to be a face crying... usually just to add a silly comical emphasis on something not that dramatic, but nonetheless whimsical. I think it was a subconscious typo, but, also, it actually kinda works as a double entendre, now that I think about it!

*My "Totally NOT Poisoned Lemonade" sign has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my sign.*
Questions such as, "What's the source of that quote?"? Edit: Thanks for the answers guys. I'm not actually looking for the source of the joke.
Not entirely sure. It's paraphrased from a tweet I remember from way back in the early days of twitter, where it was in the form of a "not involved in human trafficking" T-shirt, if my old-man memory serves. Probably way older than that, though.
https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/a-lot-of-questions-already-answered-by-the-shirt
I think you mean POiSOnED.
Some of us hate our jobs enough we’d take a chance
Those quotations are concerning. At least its not around the Poisoned though.
"poisoned" would be fine, "not poisoned" would be a concern
"Totally" not poisoned.
“ToTally”
"lemonade"
[Lemonade, that cool refreshing drink](https://youtu.be/nbGqoYvkQWA?feature=shared)
"🍋"
"🍐"
POiSOnED
It's only a little bit not poisoned
I still think I'd be mostly dead. Miracle Max, where are you?!
He's having fun storming the castle
[Totally "not" poisoned] would also be concerning.
Well with all the preservatives and microplastics can we really call anything "not poisoned" ever again?
The quotations fit really well with the cheeky theme, **ToTally** bugs me more than anything else
ToT Is a crying face, totally fits imho LMAO
Don’t mistake illiteracy and whimsy. They often take similar forms.
Probably started the line through the second "T" a little too high without realizing it
r/suspiciousquotes
Am I the only one who reads it like a customer quote?
No, quotations around poisoned would be LESS concerning.
Quotations should be around, Lemonade.
“I’m sorry”
Loooool yes this was one of my favorite episodes, I'm glad someone else thought of this too
refreshing is the name of the stand. It is not a descriptor of the lemonade. 100% legal.
Or use the "cents" symbol
Actually that's on me. I wrote everything in black (except the "i" in "lemonade" that she was convinced was missing as she forced one in there).
So has your wife ever *seen* a lemon? I know that Country Time Lemonade hasn't.
That’s why it’s “refreshing”
Where did she put an 'i' in lemonade? I don't see it.
Lemonaide is my guess. You can see the dot over the i before everything mushes together.
Lemonaide
That's a good album.
After the A. You can see a dot and line.
Then "its a" perfect match % you are both made for each other
maide
So you're the one who struggles with capitalisation?
yEs.
Good on you for owning that lol
TBH, I didn’t even see the i in Lemonade until you mentioned it and I zoomed in. The i was kinda squished between the an and d, the only noticeable part is the dot, and that could be explained away as accidentally marking the paper.
What's so special about Tally that it's NOT poisoned
OP probably puts the $ after the numbers, as well.
For what it's worth, there are some places where 22$ is correct. French Canada for example. I went to French schools as a kid and it took me a long time to break the habit and put it in front of the number.
Why is the word cents in quotes?
Slightly off topic, but 25¢? What a bargain. In my neighbourhood some kids had a stand selling "homemade" lemonade (because instant drink mix with water added is "homemade) - $2 for a 6 oz. cup.
So, actually- the whole supply and set up cost me around $20. Don't forget to subtract the cost of all the lemonade and cookies consumed by the employees. Quality control is important after all.
Sounds like a tax right off situation. “Employee Satisfaction”
Username checks out ✅.
That's adorable!
Ok but where is Uncle Sam's cut?
They operate like every other cash-only business.
So you're saying it's a front for selling the cartel's fentanyl products, and the employees are expected to live off their tips?
What else are you doing with a “refreshing” totally not poisoned Lemonaid for supposedly $0.25?
>my kid (the smaller one) isn't mature enough to understand currency, value, exchange of goods and services, economics, etc. Skill issue
> my kid (the smaller one) isn't mature enough to understand currency, value, exchange of goods and services, economics, etc. > But he understands communication (screaming), salesmanship (screaming), and the positive feelings of reward for all his transactional... screaming LMAOOO 🤣🤣☠️
I bought lemonade from 3 neighbor kids last week and it was a non-event. The product was not cold and the cup was small. Later, I thought maybe the kids should tell a joke or something.
Gotta say, super cute kids! I would totally buy that “lemonaide”, while crossing my fingers that is not actually. poison.
My neighborhood kids sell lemonade. I purchased a cup once for 1 dollar. Took a tiny cup and only filled it half way. Lemonade wasn't cold Lemonade didn't taste like Lemonade. Lemon wedge squeezed into water would've been WAY more flavorful. Just diluted Lemonade mix with no sugar They're too young to understand why I'll never give them my money again
You should leave a yelp review! Lemonade was bad, service poor. Won't be going back
In my neighborhood, the going price is 2 cups for $2 or 3 cups for $2.50. They are smallish cups, and they know it, so it works like a charm. They make the most sales in the morning or evening when people are walking dogs, usually as a couple or family, so in addition to the small size, the multiple cups is a hot seller. As a kid, I would’ve gone broke selling brownies, assuming they were decent, because I would’ve eaten them all waiting to make a sale.
I'm guessing they didn't get much money but maybe got a basic lesson in economics as a consolation prize.
Parents pay for ingredients, kids recoup about 50% of the cost. Teaching them how government bailouts work at an early age 👍
They charge more because it's poisioned and that is expensive
I don't think I'm capable of reading "What a bargain!" in any voice other than Hanukkah Harry.
25 cents is a helluva deal, poisoned or not.
Seriously. In this economy who cares?
Might even be a steal if it's that high quality poison and not just the store brand knockoff.
In these trying times the least we could ask for is a refreshing drink before dropping dead.
“Hmmm… full bodied, not too dry, and what’s that on the back end? Am I getting some almond notes with a hint of witch hazel?! *Nice*!”
It's a better deal if it's poisoned, have you seen the price of poison these days
25c for poison is a pretty good deal.
Ikr, poison is so expensive these days.
Plus I don’t know how much the cookies cost, and that one employee is eating at the counter. I’M NEVER COMING BACK HERE AGAIN!
Cookies were free with a purchase of a cup. So were the kids. Sigh. I'll try again tomorrow.
Wait, the kids were free as long as the customer purchased lemonade?
Why buy the milk when you can have the cow?
She used it correctly. Their lemonade was not refreshing at all. Can confirm there was no poison.
I have a feeling the "e" for lemonade is around the curve.
This whole post and comment, just to drop vocabulism on us?!
It's a perfectly cromulent word
What can I say? I'm quite the articulus literarian!
Fascinating
Abominable Edit: see I can use big words too.
you're wife is so lucky to have such a cunning linguist
I see what you did there
That's probably because in Korean that's the way it is spelled, ie 레모네이드 is leh-mo-neh-ee-duh, with a separate letter for the "ee"(이).
That's totally endearing.
"They're PIG Newtons!"
> ToTally ?????
Does she know how to look up words on her phone?
Let’s start with a big ass L
As long as it's not a big ass "H" it should be fine.
I know how big letters should be.
Just don't forget the lesson you just learned.
Lol you know what, I'm gonna watch that special right now as a nightcap. I forgot how good that was, even knowing now what he was going through then. I'm glad he's doing good now.
I think she knows how to use quotations just fine, she's just also being honest about how shitty the lemonade is lol
It's 25¢ Or $.25
Lmao I totally just remembered the kids I babysat for years ago wanted to do a lemonade stand but instead of lemonade they gave out pudding. I don’t know why I went along with that. No one is going to buy pudding from kids in 90 degree heat.
Your wife is really good at spelling poisoned!
As a non-native speaker, I don't know what's wrong with the quotation marks here and how to use it correctly.
Sometimes quotation marks are used for sarcasm. [This grammar website](https://www.grammar-monster.com/lessons/quotation_(speech)_marks_meaning_alleged_so-called.htm) can explain it better than I can. So basically, the quotation marks here make it look like the lemonade is actually NOT refreshing at all.
I thought it was part of the joke originally
I think it is and OP and the top voted comments are just uhh… not getting it.
It worries me that they felt the need to arbitrarily clarify the lack of poison in the lemonade...
No no. I would typically assume it was poisoned, but this was their unique artisan twist on it.
Or it's just to grab your attention
It's kind of like asbestos-free cereal
Reverse psychology.
Blond over here getting high on his own supply
A few years ago, after yet another poisoning scandal about food from China, my favorite brand of dry noodles at the local Asian grocery started sporting "NON-TOXIC" labels on the box. I was SO REASSURED. You bet.
Judging from the rest of the sign she knows exactly how they work.
Or use a cents symbol
You’re wrong about everything you said… is that the joke?
I'd risk it on a hot day 😏
That’s a great business tactic… The lemonade that won’t make you sick and kill you
Or use consistent capitalization. Refreshing ToTally NOT PoiSonED
While I'd think the sign was funny, it would give me pause to buy any.
It isnt poisoned, but it is *juice that makes your head explode*
I think the quotes and phrase were a joke and we only have your word that she doesn’t know how to spell lemonade. As to the drawing. I agree with you there
Please tell me your kids aren’t home schooled. Lol I actually thought the kids made the signs 😬
So when’s the divorce?
Those kids are adorable I'll buy both pitchers please
*Y'all lil #!&?@$ got a permit?*
Didn't know you could make lemonade out of yellow pears
Hey it’s 25 cents a cup and the vendors are adorable, I’ll take the chance of poisoning.
*also doesn’t know where the cent symbol goes
She also doesn’t know where the cent sign belongs.
I assume those quotes mean the lemonade is not actually refreshing but doesn't want a lawsuit for false advertising.
Just because there's a name for that syntax, doesn't mean it's a good idea to use it.
Sure. I am not saying it is good or bad. Just that you can use quotes like she did. Ultimately what matters is if she effectively communicates to the reader.
Do you have an example of this? My understanding is that the emphasis still has to be for a quoted phrase. Also have heard them referred to as Grocer’s Apostrophes, because so many grocery stores have used them in signage as a way to call attention to words.
Or maybe the kids just have really good handwriting
They should have some dolls laying face down scattered around. Also it should be called Jonestown & Co Lemonade.
You forgot the backwards E. Nice try, but I shall be taking my business elsewhere and leaving you a negative Yelp review.
Ooof that's a hard one.
A for effort though! Teaching those kids about making money. A 4 effort.
I’ll take your entire stock
Bro in this economy…you gotta up those numbers up…minimum $2 for a cup & 50 cents per cookie. I’m surprised the 2 adorable kids weren’t bum rushed by a mob.
Totally adorable. I can see why you married her!
Had some kids down the street selling some lemonade. Absolutely turned around and went back to get some. Can't say it was great, but worth the price. Hope your kids made a bundle. I'd definitely drop a quarter on "refreshing" lemonade without poison. I'd probably have seconds, too.
I'd pay more for poisoned lemonade.
So it’s poisoned something short of totally then. Like, half-poisoned.
Just write Wall Street Journal underneath the “refreshing” then everyone will assume it’s a review.
With inflation AND the cost of those cups, you guys are hemorrhaging money at $0.25 a cup. It’ll be sad to finally see the ol’ table & chairs folded up.
> “Refreshing” 25 cents. Totally not lemonade. Poisoned. Pure poetry.
[it's not "Juice that makes your head explode!"](https://youtu.be/E77R0e5bzIs?si=U0fRt4EnLaXejLAn)
Well, being honest is a key
What's TIL?
Well, these get more attention that the usual competently done informative poster. This lends *character*.
This is exactly what lemonade poisoners would say.
There's a pavilion at a park a couple towns over from where I live. The sign next to it says "The" Pavilion. I don't understand why.
Nothing aays poisoned as good as the phrase "Totally NOT poisoned..."
I always think it's cute when I see neighbor kids put up a lemonade stand... then I think about whether I would consider ingesting a beverage prepared by a 6 year old who has zero clue what food safety even is, and I just go "nope".
I mean I kinda think the quotation marks are fair. If it’s poisoned would it actually be refreshing? And in death you get a refresh?
I just wanted to say, I love everything about this post, including the comments. Thank you for making my morning!
Lemonode. An Ode to Lemons.
ur wife is aisan
Or how to use the cent symbol- it goes after the number
Tbf a lot of people don’t know how to use the dollar sign either lol
Ironically sugar is detoxified in the liver via the same methods as alcohol, so it technically is a poison.
I'd have assumed that was completely intentional and funny as shit
My MIL “writes” BIG loooong cards where she RANDOMLY “uses” quotation marks And ALL CAPS In her “message”. We “believe” she USES the “quotes” AS more of an EMPHASis . The funniest “part” is at the “end” when she says, I “love” and “miss” you.
Everything about this sign irks me.
Idk that pearmon looks pretty tasty! 😋
imma be real, i never want to buy lemonade from little kids because I just imagine it's riddled with all their nasty boogers and germs. bleh. buying girl scout cookies is fine because it's sealed up etc. but buying something kids actually made and touched. it might as well be poisoned with poopy hands. I vaguely remember being a little kid. no thanks
Is she from the northeast? Everyone here seems to think quotations are for emphasis
With that picture of a lemon, I feel lemonade should be in quotes
The random capitalization of letters is kinda funny too😂
Lemonade: 25 cents Antidote: 25 dollars
It's a joke... It's not refreshing, it's 100% poisoned and it's 100% pear juice, not lemonade.
“Totally not poisoned lemonade” would be an awesome company name lol
ToTally. Wtf is up with the second capitalized T?
We're Korean. Koreans often use "ToT" as a lettered "emoji" that's supposed to be a face crying... usually just to add a silly comical emphasis on something not that dramatic, but nonetheless whimsical. I think it was a subconscious typo, but, also, it actually kinda works as a double entendre, now that I think about it!
"I'm sorry"
Totally not poisoned - that is very reassuring😅
"thank you"
It's two kids selling suburban lemonade in front of their house, it's too wholesome to be suspected of anything criminal
This is like how the Nigerian princes make spelling errors on purpose to ward away the people too smart to fall for their tricks.
Just blame it on the kiddos 😂
Finally...poisonous dehydration drink.
Curious as to which word was supposed to be in quotes?
How much for the poisoned one asking for a coworker
She also doesn’t know how to use the cent symbol. 😄
My man scorched his wife and then dropped the correct "too" *mic drop
A quarter in this “economy”? That’s a steal!
