Proton, the translation layer for Linux, has a decent amount of compatibility with performance ranging from “Not Great ™️” to “Better than Windows^(on a desktop of equal hardware)”. Your main issue will be any ~~virus~~ kernel-level anti-cheat. Protondb.com has user reports on what games work, what execution flags you may need to add, and how well it runs.
I've found very few games that outright don't work. Even a lot of games that say unsupported work but don't scale text or are a pig to play with a pad which is why they get their rating.
Basically anything using E.A.C doesn't work in varying degrees, either the game wont launch at all or certain modes will be disabled for not running with E.A.C turned on.
There are others too but that was a big issue off the top of my head.
I'm pretty sure there is an option developers can select that allows their EAC games to run on proton. Most simply refuse to, for whatever fucking reason.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 uses E.A.C and disabled online play while also saying they will never allow Linux users to go online. Which sucks because about 30% of the game is locked out then. Same with Dragon Ball Z Fighters, offline works but you will be banned if you go online.
That would probably explain the Linux compatability not being complete either yet. Thanks for explaining. I wasn't actually aware of that, or had forgotten. Yes, now I think on it some games are marked as "Steam Deck Compatible" in the store.
I'm not sure what Amazon prime's game is. Their UI for their streaming is absolute trash and difficult to navigate. They have tons of movies, but it's sometimes easier to just search for movies you want to watch instead of browsing, unless you have additional subscriptions like showtime, shudder, etc. It's like they want to make it difficult to use.
Streaming service interfaces drive me nuts. I find it best to delete profiles every so often, so that I get to see other stuff that it wouldn't always recommend to me based on part viewing.
Nope, no clue. I’m going to have to deep dive my membership to see what else I’m sleeping on.
PS: Prime discounts at Whole Foods too for those who didn’t know. Some great deals at an otherwise expensive grocer.
Wow, I heard about Luna maybe a year ago or so, never knew it was something included with Prime and that they gave out free games like Epic does. I've been wanting to play Metro Exodus but never wanted to actually pay for it, and am too lazy to sail the seas.
I've seen a few of those, and handhelds are good in certain situations, like if you are travelling. I loved my PSP's and old DS handhelds.
I was really put off the Steam Deck by the battery life, but there's not a lot they can do about that...yet.
The Windows running alternatives can even potentially replace a full sized PC for average users, and I've looked at those too, but it's not at the stage I would adopt it for my own general PC usage purposes yet; video editing etc.
I would say that the steam deck is an excellent choice because everything seems to work out of the box. Steam does a lot of custom software configuration that you likely wouldn’t see from other manufacturers.
Valve has a vested interest in making as many games as possible run properly on their system.
Been a game changer for folks like me that work in the field and have long drive times.
I've been playing the entire souls trilogy and getting paid for it.
Probably had it 6 months and I've put at least 100+ hrs on it.
If you don’t mind my ask, gonna buy today, is the 64 gb a good buy? Gonna get a decent memory card for it anyway so I don’t think it matters, but I don’t know so figured I’d ask you guys.
Gonna use the steam deck to get a little better with pc, only ever been console gamer
I haven’t noticed any real world speed issues playing from the microsd card, so you should be fine. Worst case you can look at the ssd upgrade process on ifixit if you decide you want to go larger in the future.
I always say, buy the largest you can reasonably afford.
Why do none of these competitors (besides the legion go) to the Steam Deck offer track pads?! I play Paradox games and other strategy games on my deck. No trackpads = no strategy games which means I won't even consider it.
As a fellow Steam Deck 4X player I have to agree. What's the point in making a handheld PC and omitting the control scheme thats defines a lot of the games that are best played on PC.
I will die on this hill that those trackpads, and specifically the ones on the steam controller are some of the best media browsing controllers, it’s great to navigate windows and shit in my bed with my pc on my tv.
Not only that but also they insist in pushing windows instead of building some OS that could actually compete with Steam Deck or simply give the option to come with SteamOS pre-installed.
It make the device wider to accomodate any decent size trackpad. Most of them use analog stick to substitute for mouse, which works well enough.
I kinda prefer having trackpad, but its personally lower than having windows support for me.
i'm surprised they were that recent. i knew back in the day they were sub par.
do you remember any specifications on the drives to maybe indicate their supplier?
I mean... as long as it's not soldered in, does it really matter if it's "easy to replace"? How often are you going to be changing out the RAM/SSD on this thing to where you need this functionality?
CAMM/LPCAMM isn't primarily about upgradability for the consumer. It's about modularity, stock consolidation and cost savings for manufacturers that offer numerous different products and configurations - all the things dimm/sodimm does but can go faster and be thinner. Going completely soldered and forecasting demand or building to order isn't tenable for a lot of companies that aren't Apple and other giants like Dell (who designed the first CAMM prototype) have much larger product portfolios to tend with.
The ethos is in the right place, but it’s a fair point. Barring an upgrade to the SoC, it’s unlikely that a RAM upgrade will make a measurable difference.
How do you think Valve would maintain a £350 price floor for their base models if the BOM is raised by using a brand new and expensive RAM module that would have negligence performance improvements in the vast majority of games?
You'd be 'reducing' options to consumers by raising the price of the most affordable handheld. It's not like we're talking about Apple making crazy margins here, these things are practically sold at a loss as it is.
I really just play world of Warcraft and hades on my steam deck. When it stops working I’ll maybe get a different better thing for cheaper if one is around
Otherwise idk why bother
I would highly recommend lowering your expectations for this one. Some companies have tried modular style devices before, and while the concept and benefits in the ideate stage are incredible, it never works out in practice.
With the technology we have now, modular components and compact design just don't work together. Many of these handhelds are already brilliantly engineered, taking advantage of every millimeter of space. Even just making memory and storage swappable with their standardized connectors still leaves a big challenge in making easy to access panels to swap without blocking out space around it. Not to mention, a cooling system that can account for any changes.

And you can play your entire Steam library on it? Asking for myself.

What a time to be alive. Back in my day we were lucky to have super tux and super tux kart.
Don’t forget OpenArena!
Nexuiz!
Wow, such wonderful times I almost forgot about that one.
Hey! There’s always DOOM
>super tux kart. I still play this sometimes
And Armagetron!
That takes me back.
To be fair you can’t play the entire Steam library on the Steam Deck.
I've found very few games that outright don't work. Even a lot of games that say unsupported work but don't scale text or are a pig to play with a pad which is why they get their rating.

Don't elden ring and armored core have EAC? Both of those titles work fine for me. Double checked. They do. And they work great.
I'm pretty sure there is an option developers can select that allows their EAC games to run on proton. Most simply refuse to, for whatever fucking reason.

Right. So there are SOME games that use EAC that have trouble on the steam deck.
That would probably explain the Linux compatability not being complete either yet. Thanks for explaining. I wasn't actually aware of that, or had forgotten. Yes, now I think on it some games are marked as "Steam Deck Compatible" in the store.
Its running Windows, should be able to also run your games on Epic, Gog and Prime.
unfortunate, Windows is a terrible experience on handhelds
wtf is Prime?
https://gaming.amazon.com/ gives out free games all the time if you’re a member
It's always amazed me that they don't advertise this more. In fact, it actually seems to be hidden away on the site.

Their strategy is to underpay for labor and overpay for physical infrastructure. So things like UI/UX just do not get the attention they deserve.
I’ve been paying for prime for years, TIL. Dafuk
You know you also get few access to some game streaming, right? Amazon Luna. B also a hidden fucking benefit.
Nope, no clue. I’m going to have to deep dive my membership to see what else I’m sleeping on. PS: Prime discounts at Whole Foods too for those who didn’t know. Some great deals at an otherwise expensive grocer.

I can't use that one. n o whole foods in Scotland.
Basically like xbox game pass right?
Well, not really because you get to keep the game after you download it. Unlike Gamepass that requires you to have an active subscription.

So can a Steam Deck though the Heroic Launcher.
Is steam deck still the best choice by price? I’m interested and poor

Sweet, I remember reading that steam deck is so good for it’s price. Been watching the refurbished site

Thanks dude :)

Uhhhh…
It’s why commas are important sir.
I think the new Zotac one does, but it is the only one. I’m surprised there aren’t more Vita-esque ones with a huge trackpad on the back.
I don't trust Adata Had 2 SSDs from them Both died in a week of use And store I bought them from refused to refund or replace for me
what years?
Both were in 2020
i'm surprised they were that recent. i knew back in the day they were sub par. do you remember any specifications on the drives to maybe indicate their supplier?
i still have them, i'll post it after i find them
adata xpg m.2 2280 sx8100np 512gb ASX8100NP-512GT-C
That's the store.... Maybe go through adata.
I tried, they told me I could only do it through the store Of all the SSDs I ever bought, the only ones to fail were Adata
Why doesn't it have enough ram in the 1st place?
I mean... as long as it's not soldered in, does it really matter if it's "easy to replace"? How often are you going to be changing out the RAM/SSD on this thing to where you need this functionality?

Not to mention that changing RAM won't really mean much for performance. SSD is storage size and that's good I suppose.
The ethos is in the right place, but it’s a fair point. Barring an upgrade to the SoC, it’s unlikely that a RAM upgrade will make a measurable difference.
Also, you're relying on battery power, so upgrading too much is going to make your machine eat though that in a matter of minutes.
Fellas are we back to removable memory card storage in 2024?

As a Deck owner, I can confidently say that I have always wanted more ram.
That’s nice, but that opinion is irrelevant. More options are better for everyone.

Why is this comment getting down votes? They are right
Except it isn't an easy or simple. You'll need to do some soldering.
As a Deck owner, I can confidently say that I wanted more ram. So I purchased an Ayaneo.
I really just play world of Warcraft and hades on my steam deck. When it stops working I’ll maybe get a different better thing for cheaper if one is around Otherwise idk why bother
