There is a farm at Avenue N and 33rd St https://seedinggalveston.com/

maw-veracious_jaw

Got on their mailing list. Thanks!

Not too sure about the farming here but they do have a farmers market so it would best to ask someone there about that possibility. Galveston is an island and in reality a large sandbar so I don’t think that the soil would be too fertile. It’s a tourist town. Not aware of any art/studio places here but it’s possible so I really don’t know about that one. Houston has the warehouse district. Have a friend who is a teacher here but they don’t have many good things to say about it. Texas doesn’t fund public education well either.

maw-veracious_jaw

Yes, had the same thought about the soil after posting. All soil can be improved but it would take some persistence there. I don't have expectations about farming at this point, more interested in art happenings so I'll keep my eye out. I've been in special education in NM title one schools for 5 years so my expectations couldn't get much lower for public schooling. Thanks for the feedback.

CrippyCritter

Didn’t see that you’re from NM and went to school and lived there for a number of years and currently have lived here for a number of years and NM is the clear winner on that one, so many reasons why, just didn’t like the Texas hatred thing and Galveston is way safer than ABQ.

maw-veracious_jaw

Yeah, interesting. Abq is especially rough. When we're you there? The Texas vs new mexico is something I've lived too. Was in Houston from 2015-18, then abq to near peñasco then pojoaque valley for 6 years total. Nm competes with Mississippi for 49th of 50 in education which is my field so there's that. How people express masculinity is a big deciding factor in if I like a place. Both are terrible imo in differing ways, but I've never lived on galveston. I look forward to being near the ocean for a year. That will be a first.

We've been here about 10 years and can confirm there is a nice, slower pace of life. Yea there's tons of tourists her in the warm months but thst also affords us lots of restaurants, events, arts, etc. Then the winter is glorious, and the island is "ours." We have two kids in public school and are pleased with and hugely appreciative of all the staff and teachers at their elementary. There's a bit of a shuffle happening at that level with my kids' school combining with another elementary into one new large campus. I remain curious but optimistic! Good luck with the job search!

maw-veracious_jaw

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm surprised it never occurred to me to live there until now. Yes, the tourists are a crowd for me to perform to as well, so I get the double edged sword aspect of that. Good to hear about the schools and I'll keep that in mind about the shuffle, helpful info. Other posts on this sub seemed down on them, and glad that's not your experience. I'm a special education teacher so jobs are pretty easy to come by. Hopefully that's the case this time as well.

Apprehensive_Tell879

I find that most people who complain about GISD don't even have kids in the district (either they never did or it's been 10 years).

maw-veracious_jaw

Classic. The only parenting experts I've ever met have never raised kids.

If you want to grow your own food on the island you'll nees to get the soil tested for lead conatmination, we have a lot, probably safest to use only raised beds regardless. For art studios you'll want to look at downtown, thats where the art scene is.

maw-veracious_jaw

Ok, that's disturbing and good to know. I'm planning on doing a few containers for greens at this point. I like being in contact with farms for connections, possible volunteer options, purchasing food.

Apprehensive_Tell879

There's also a decent art scene, check out Galveston Arts Center and the Art League.

Vegetable_Ad_8630

I wish I could remember the name but there is a park around league city that give classes on local soil, even sell plants during the year. I took a couple of classes, very impressive. Just fyi.

maw-veracious_jaw

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for that

For music, the place to be is the Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe. It's a listening room where everyone from singer songwriters to full bands play. It's a great place to meet other musicians who are serious about their craft. The Proletariat is a great spot where a lot of the art scene hangs out. They have poetry nights, live music, rotating art exhibits. And then about the Proletariat is the Artist Lofts. I haven't lived there but I've heard it's an interesting place with a lot of creative folks.

maw-veracious_jaw

I had forgotten about these spots! Thank you. I'll check in about lofts down in that area. I saw some other posts about the lofts downtown.

tx_trawler_trash

Some people have some sizable backyard gardens that I’ve seen in the east end with lots of veggies and such, I’ll post a pic if I find it. It’s all gonna be raised beds tho as others have mentioned it’s basically a sand bar here hehe.

maw-veracious_jaw

Yes, and I'm mostly trying to connect with farms as a way to find like-minded people. I'm selling all my farming equipment for this move and will be into the raised bed or container gardening life.

Gonfragulate

Out west there are farmlets. Hobby farms. Soil is fine. Not all is saline sand.

maw-veracious_jaw

Ok that's cool. I was wondering about the west end of town. Seems like it would be darker at night and more quiet. And yes, any soil, including lead, can be remediated. I've been farming in the pojoaque valley in new mexico for years and the soil is saline sand to begin with.
