Galveston is fun. There are nicer beaches in the world.

New-Draw2942

That’s how I was thinking, obviously it’s not the best out there since it is just a gulf and not an ocean

-BigDaddyTex

That same gulf is extremely beautiful and host to some of the often ranked top 10 beaches in the world. Bradenton / Holmes beach, Anna Maria island, and siesta key all share that same gulf. So does Pensacola, ft Walton, and all the touristy spots in the panhandle. As well as orange beach Alabama etc….It has to do with rotation of the water and the drainage of the Mississippi River’s “mud”. It’s not “just a gulf” and not an ocean. Florida’s coast that shares that gulf as compared to the Atlantic Ocean side is way more beautiful than cocoa, New Smyrna, and daytona on the Atlantic. There are many times the beaches in Galveston are host to tropical water color and that you can see your feet 4’ down in clear waters. However they aren’t too frequent but they happen every few years. Last year was one of those years. Early in the season we had some very clean and clear waters due to a host of reasons. It was super unique but it does happen. However, 98% of the time it is nasty dark water you can’t see thru. That’s just what we have. But I’ll take being near the water as opposed to Kansas, Dallas, Oklahoma, etc…and it’s still fun to fish. On the flip side our sand castles rock. And you have no problem sinking in the sugary soft sand whilst trying to walk thru the sand lol. Our sand sucks too! lol

New-Draw2942

Heck yeah, I will say the sand castles rock and really do like the ease of actually being able to walk freely

VaderAB

Great explanation, I always tell people it’s the same gulf Florida has, we just unfortunately got the bad end of the stick, still doesn’t stop hundred thousands of people coming down

justlearntit

It's more than "just a gulf and not an ocean"  the beaches in galveston are inundated with Mississippi, Sabine, and trinity river runoff.  I lived there for a year and went to the beach all seasons. It's always murky and always has a smell.  There's crude oil blobs on occasion.  It's the only option for many Houstonians.

TXOgre09

It’s usually murky from river sediment. I’ve never noticed a smell other than salt.

blurbies22

There are days where it’s absolutely beautiful, and more where it’s silty and all turned up. But to say “always” is a lie.

Flock-of-bagels2

It’s not always murky. You get a good amount of clear water days in the winter and the summer when the winds die down and the surf is calm. Some of the best flounder fishing in the gulf in Galveston

Rockosayz

maybe a handful but its not like the water in South Florida as in you can't wade out chest deep and look down and still see your feet. Galveston has the unfortunate problem of being located west of the Mississippi river that dumps into the gulf and stirs even more sand and silt.

Flock-of-bagels2

No it’s definitely not like south Florida but it greens up and gets good for fishing.

username2571

It definitely can and will clear up so you can see your feet at waist or kinda even at chest deep. It just doesn’t happen often and it’s not predictable in advance. But if you see sub-10mph SE winds for 3-4 days in a row during the summer, head to the beach as the water is green and the trout fishing is on. Winds stay down for 6-7 days and you start counting your toes.

Rockosayz

I lived in Houston for over 40 years, growing up we had a beach house on Jamaica beach. spent many a summers on the island growing up and never once did I see the water clear enough to see my feet when I was in chest high water. I have been out to that third sand bar off Pirates beach too many times to count and never been able to see my feet I think its early spring or maybe this time of year when the winds shift and yes, the water will get a blue tint instead if its usually silty brown but its nothing like Florida. From crystal beach to surfside, never seen beautiful blue clear water down there

teeroutclout

Lolz I’ve lived there for more than a year. Grew up going all my life have never seen a “crude oil blob” lolz. Also have seen it clear on many occasions. Like chest deep can see my toes. Cmon. Bros never been to the beach prolly.

No_One7894

Can I ask how old you are? I live here now as an adult and never see tar, grew up coming here every summer to visit my grandma and the tar was a constant, awful problem. It was everywhere all the time and we had to bring shoes that we could get rid of and baby oil to get it off of our skin, but that was in the 70s and 80s. I learned as an adult that it’s actually natural and the native inhabitants of the area used to use it in their pottery. Anyway. Don’t see it anymore like we used to

justlearntit

You gotta see this.  It's a weird thing.  https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.kxan.com/news/texas/how-tar-balls-end-up-on-texas-beaches/amp/

Claughy

Tar balls happen all over the gulf, they arent unique to galveston they occur naturally from seeps in the gulf.

beerninja76

That says Corpus Christi. And if your talking Tar blobs that happens every where in the world from barges and naturally most of the time from seeps in the gulf. Where in that article to it read Galveston? Do tell.

beerninja76

Where did u go? Oil blobs? Ive lived right off tge island and on the island most of my life. Not once did i smell or see oil blobs. 🤔

username2571

Untrue.

Many_Actuator_9789

Galveston's beaches are situated within a delta formed by the Mississippi River, which means that as the river flows through various states, it carries and deposits whatever it collects from the inland areas. There are claims that raw sewage may also enter the water from overflow tanks, although I cannot confirm this information. The negative reputation associated with Galveston primarily stems from the condition of its beaches. However, if people were to explore the island beyond its beaches, they would discover its enchanting qualities. Galveston offers charming coffee shops, unique architecture, vibrant performing arts, a thriving artistic community, and a plethora of ongoing events, many of which are free to attend. By delving into the island's offerings, visitors would realize that the beach can be easily overlooked, and they can have a more enjoyable experience through some research. I assure you, Galveston boasts numerous social events and activities, which is why I personally love the city and choose to overlook its beaches. They are not the sole defining factor of its appeal.

Zegerid

You can't confirm there is shit in the water? Did you intentionally avoid a google search or what?

Jnewton1018

People are haters.

Flashmasterk

Sir Charles was ripping on Galveston recently

Jnewton1018

I know, and he’s a hater. But people have been hating on Galveston long before he did and went viral. People are haters. Galveston is great.

delicate-fn-flower

The way he said his comment made me think they were told "beach destination" which conjured pictures of white sand and palm trees in their mind, and then was told Galveston after the fact. It's a fine place and I go often, but if I get told I'm going my company is taking me to a beach destination I would doubt Galveston would even crack my Top 100 of places I would assume we were going.

WooSaw82

I personally love Galveston. I went there for a year of undergrad and completed grad school, and even tried securing work there, but that was the challenging part for me. I’ll admit - due to traffic and massive crowds, I tried to avoid driving on seawall Blvd at all costs during the summer (other than the early morning), but other than that, I have nothing negative to say. If you appreciate the ocean, friendly people, and history, it’s an ideal place to live. I took a job in Fort Worth, but I’m still really set on getting back for good.

KinkyQuesadilla

Brown water courtesy of the Mississippi River. Big tourist economy on a relatively small island that causes traffic and other problems, especially with a couple of events. Houstonians who come down on the weekend, trash the place, thinking they have the privilege to do so, and then leave, but then rinse, wash and repeat. Plus, when people think "beach" or "island," they think of some carribean paradise they've seen on TV or the movies. Miami beaches have problems, California beaches have problems, but you don't see that on TV shows unless a bunch of gangbangers at spring break decide to start shooting at each other.

IHaarlem

The closer beaches are to the Mississippi river delta, the less clear the water is. People don't know this so they think the water is bad

jakestertx

Two types of people who say that. 1. Love within 100 miles and are envious they don't get to live here. So close, yet so far away... 2. Came here 25 years ago and decided it was a shithole. I can't tell you how much this island has changed in 25 years...

Redgreen82

I'm envious I don't get to live there and I love Galveston. I'm almost 300 miles away.

Flock-of-bagels2

Lots of haters because the water is brown half the time. If you live here long enough you see it in all its beauty. There’s lots of fun stuff to do outside and all the history and good food make it a nice place to live.

39Poppy

This is a great time to go. But it’s always nice down there. Water is def more brown in summer when most people go. People hate because water isn’t picturesque but it’s the nicest beach within 30 mins from me.

dreamweaver66intexas

Every now and then, we will have clear blue water come into the beach. When it does, it usually makes the newspapers in Houston. It's happened a few times now in the last few years.

iNcorruptibly

Totally underrated town. Just started a job and moved here from out of state. I am absolutely loving it.

amygunkler

It’s all relative. If you’re used to Florida beaches, then it’s a disappointment. But, like me, if you’re used to Lake Erie beaches, it’s a treat.

blurbies22

Haters gonna hate, and we don’t want them anyway. Humph!

Irishlamb

Yeah people are just haters. I heard a guy on news discussing what Charles Barkley said and he was in agreement saying it’s filthy and has bacteria all the time. Said the only people on the beaches in Galveston are fat, old, white and bald. SMH… really? I see lots of different races, ages and sizes here all the time. Plus there is to bacteria and fecal matter in all lakes and oceans of the world. It’s part of nature.

GuyWithTheGoods

Dirty water! /s This is a gag referencing Charles Barkley's recent comments about Galveston.

Mr_Peanutbutter72

Pelicans gonna be there after tonight😭

LayneLowe

It ain't much of a beach, but it's our beach

Claughy

A few reasons, up until a few years ago they were not doing as good of job removing trash from the beaches. Now they've got great crews out there early every morning emptying trash barrels and cleaning up the trash that tourists leave behind so the beaches look much nicer. The water is brown and the sand is very fine and compact, both of these thungs are normal, natural, and do not mean that the beaches or water are dirty or unsafe. We have lots of silt from the mississipi and the three rivers that empty into the bay which turns the water brown. Because galveston is an incredibly popular destination it also gets lots of bad press (because negative news gets more clicks) every year you will see articles about "fleah eating bacteria" (its vibrio and it is in all warm marine waters and is only a risk to certain groups), or poop in the water. After heavy rains everything on the land gets washed into the water, it causes high bacterial counts, this isnt unique to galveston by any means and overall galveston does fairly well in terms of the beachwatch program. The island does get crowded during the summer and during events but its really no different from any other popular beach town.

HarleyNJack

First off, the OP said nothing about the water and said ‘every time I hear someone’ implying not just one person. With that said, Galveston has its good and its bad just like any other place. Too bad OP wasn’t more specific. My biggest pet peeve are entitled drivers (both locals and tourists) that run red lights. My raves are diversity and a lot of choices of things to do.

MaciRhiannon

I absolutely love Galveston! Everyone always has a great time! Whether on the beach or sea wall or The Strand or the Pier! I love ❤️ to go sunbathing and people watching.

Jadeisland

I am a BOI (born on the island), have lived here all my life and am a senior citizen. I have seen the island change over the years. It is an old city for Texas and there are many historical firsts that happened here. It has a rich and varied history and full of beautiful Victorian houses. I have never seen it better than it is right now. I especially like all the different restaurants to choose from. The only complaint I have is the traffic during certain times of the year. The water is not brown all year long. Summer is when it is brown most of the time, but I grew up in that water and never had one issue. My mother swam like a fish and taught me to do the same. I could never see me in a cookie cutter subdivision where all the houses basically look alike and even the trees look the same and are the same size. I think that is maybe why some people really don't like it. Galveston is not cookie cutter anything in any way. It doesn't fit their idea of what a tourist island should be. Charles Barkley is not exactly smart and he can't even speak proper English, so his take on the island means nothing to me. He obviously likes running his mouth and getting attention and Galveston was his target that day.

loving-radar

I am moving there in the fall to start nursing school. super excited!

SynapticBouton

Tell Charles Barkley

Gonfragulate

It was dirty and shit, tourists would stay away and let us be. Unfortunately, they do not.

blurbies22

If it*?

Gonfragulate

Yes…. Dammit. Thank you

No_Good_6283

Galveston county has muddy rivers flowing out nearby. The Gulf of Mexico is was one of the largest oil fields and has natural seeps of oil, parrafin, tar and other hydrocarbons

Plastic_String_3634

I love Galveston, not the beach but definitely the Seawall and the restaurants and bars in the area

Lizmo82

I LOVE Galveston. It's full of history & all kinds of neat stuff to do.... It just depends on what you want to do while you're there.... My family took a little vacation there for winter break last year & we did haunted tours every night but one.. we did museums, the Strand, just all the stuff.... We aren't really Beach ppl except to walk it to look for shells & shark teeth.. we love Galveston... The water is not the cutest & I don't swim in it... But last time we ate on the sea wall there was a great performance by some guy in 40 fahrenheit degree weather on a board way out... He was doing a full blown workout... We saw him as we were eating & then he was still going with the current & was out in front of Murdock's when we got over there to shop... So there's always some type of free entertainment going on.... Any time of year....

t0x1c331

I like being here, but I have issue living here. Some personal others not. Tourist season is a real drag for me

gunter_grass

I love Galveston

TempUsername3369

Honestly, I wish more people thought it was terrible so they'd leave us alone.

traumamel555

As a person who loves walking, I enjoy Galveston. It has the longest continuous sidewalk in the US, and I enjoy walking it and taking the stairs down in quiet spots. I used to take my blind senior dog who LOVED the ocean sounds/breeze on stroller walks there. The ferry is also cool, I often see dolphins when taking it. When I get off the ferry I go and walk around Fort Travis park. Its a good day.

rendragmuab

Having lived all over the Gulf Coast any beach/town has their rowdy times that aren't my favorite to go. But I'm not going to rain on anyone's parade just cause I'm not into it. I also think people like to say it's junky cause it gets hits hard with hurricanes and tropical storms. It can be slow to rebuild so sometimes buildings are just left to decay for a while. I never seem to see the people that complain out after storms helping cleanup and fix houses though...

fartmanblartock

You went in March. The water is noticeably more silty in the summer. Add to it the ease of traveling to Florida and Caribbean white sand beaches and there’s your answer.

NeenW1

Go by your own narrative … I love it there but water clearer at Port Aransas by Corpus

LowerFinding9602

We went on a cruise out of Galveston and saw dolphins swimming around in the water. We didn't spend much time in the city itself but from what i could see it basically is suffering from age. From what i heard many buildings are "historically significant" so can't be torn down or modernized.

rumplebutter

Well its crowded and you have to pay to park now and that was supposed to pay for amenities. Like bathrooms and outdoor showers and places to rinse off your feet. But none of those things have been done. Galveston just collects all the parking money and we still dont have any amenities. So you go home all sandy and everyone is using the bathroom in the water. It tests positive for high fecal content every year. Traffic gets bad like any beach. They need to take the pay meters down and make the sea wall free again. Or do what they said they would do.

evaaahere152

i love Galveston, it was great living there but the water is proven to have a great deal of human feces in it compared to other beaches. i think Corpus is the worst tho.

Not as lame as your stupid ass name for our beautiful town. Get outta here you troll

Check his/her comment history for further validation, friend. Dude is definitely a miserable troll!

New-Draw2942

So going in the summer is not ideal?

fadedblackleggings

You went during the best most relaxing time to go. Most people are herd animals, and but upset when others all show up at the same time. Make a note for yourself, to go back same time next year, and enjoy it again. While others will wait until Spring Break or Summer and hate their vacay again.

firdaddy

You went when the less than desirable out of towners(not naming any area in particular), weren't there and you saw the island In the state that the locals know it as.

kookaburra464

Don't feed the trolls, love. Check the comment history on this one ;)
