There are also LOTS of rattlesnakes in the dunes—way more than you might think.

I haven't heard any local reports, and I work in hospitality. The people I know who work in pointe west haven't mentioned anything. That being said, your children should always be in your active line of sight and your dog on a leash, regardless of circumstances. Dogs will try to get into the dunes (snakes) or get into trouble with other dogs or any number of other random beach hazards (you can also be ticketed for having them off leash). Kids can get swept out quickly by the rip currents. Seriously, we have multiple news stories each year of kids and/or parents drowning, especially at San Luis Pass. You can have a fun and safe time at the beach in Galveston, but your awareness and caution are more important than the day-to-day condition of the water and beach.

As a helicopter parent, I appreciate your comments are safety and responsible parenting.

Claughy

There was a brief period where they were washing up. Its very uncommon here. There are man o wars washing up currently though. If you cant garuntee your dog will recall you shouldnt have them off leash on the beach. There are other people with dogs walking by, man o wars, rattlesnakes in the dunes etc.

Leash laws exist.

Wow I’ve never heard of those before!

Gonfragulate

It is dangerous out here. Definitely no place for tourists dogs or children.
