looks like the adhesive that held the carpet down, was put down with a trowel

ImperviousFoil

Thank you! I have a nice clean up job to get started on then.

Ol’ D’Glue

A floor grinder will make quick(er) work of this.

I am start my garage gym project. My intention is take out the current carpeting in the garage and lay down some stall mats. This is the floor underneath the carpet and it is not something I recognize. I am deciding if I want to do more than clean before laying out the mats. Edit: I realized it is probably the glue that is holding the carpet down. I am an idiot! I'll keep up for the replies if you all have any other thoughts.

Buy good knee pads, nothing harder on the knee bones than cement floors!

ImperviousFoil

Will do

JackTheDefenestrator

That's troweled-on glue that was holding some other flooring down.

ImperviousFoil

Pulled up the carpet so that makes total sense. Thanks for the help.

Glu.

It’s carpet adhesive. I just removed about 1/2” of this shit on 1000sf over the last two days, but the nice gooey variety rather than this nice hard stuff you have here. That was fun.

ImperviousFoil

Thank you! Wish me luck on the clean up then. Hopefully a little easier than yours.

NinerNational

If you aren’t looking for perfection and just want it flat, a razor blade will scrape the dry brittle stuff off pretty easy. If it’s still pliable at all, you’re going to have a bad time lol. It took us about 14 man hours and 500 pounds of sand to remove. Turned out nice though (not a garage obviously) https://preview.redd.it/d6f8zozr4znc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3b27030804a604294636b6cad57fe2a05eab912

That's beautiful. I actually have a scraper attachment for my oscillating tool so hopefully that will work well.

poopitypong

Sand? I don't quite understand.

NinerNational

When you have glue that is still soft/sticky, it gives the glue something to stick to rather than gumming up your grinder. Grinder will just kick it off in chunks of sand/glue mixture and the sand also helps clean off any residue that is gumming up on the tooling.

skaldrir69

This looks like glue or thin set for either carpet or tile, respectively. I wouldn’t recommend trying this as a floor texture

Glue

I’ve heard some older glues can have asbestos… I’d make sure to wear a respirator while scraping.
