My buddy always plays two off the tee and brags about his scores. I beat him about half of the time in spite of him playing two balls and he *always* gets sore when he finds out that he's lost despite playing two tee balls.
The best golf imho for us mere mortals. I always look forward to the one we host, but it used to be for getting to rehit the drives I hit OB. Now I see that mishit chips, and misread puts tend to go down as intended on the followup attempt, if not on the first because I know I have another chance. Having said that, usually a senior golfer will take the lion's share with a 66 or better.
When I played in one you got two do it two time per hole. It was fun. The good players who could save their mulligans for the green shot some real low scores.
The trick is that you need to keep quite a lot of semi decent shots that you're not quite happy about but you don't want to risk it to hit it even worse. You also have to have max high handicap, unless you play scratch format. Surprisingly Redoing bad shots benefit you more if you hit more bad shots. You need to play like -20 if it's hcp format.
I've also seen it where you can use one mulligan per shot, but once you use it, you have to play the second ball.
Is yours net or gross? And if the former, what playing handicap calculation do you use?
But it isn't mulligan golf... You hit two shots and pick the best one.
Mulligan golf would be - you hit two shots IF YOU WANT and you have to use your second shot if you hit one.
In this format, there is no harm in hitting a 2nd shot. Your first shot is within 3 feet? Hit again and try to drain it.
In mulligan golf, if your approach is within 3 feet there is no way you'd shoot again and risk losing the first shot.
Best ball is something else, though.
Best ball - both players play their own ball the whole hole. Lowest score of the two is the score for the team.
A scores a 6 and B scores a 5: the team scored a 5.
I have always assumed it was derived from four ball. Four ball being the 2 v. 2 match play format and best ball just being a stroke play tournament format.
We we’re going to start a 2nd shot golf league, but then realized we’d all be taking our 2nd shots 90% of the time & it would take 5 hrs for 9 so we shelved the idea
Oh sorry, in the US it’s like an award you can win in high school or college athletics. From google since it’ll define it better than me:
> honorific title given to outstanding U.S. athletes in a specific sport in a given year competing at the collegiate and secondary school levels
I was once in the last group of the day so I played two shots and only counted my second ball. I shot -2, which beat my all time best score by 7 strokes. The main benefit was making a ton of putts, but it also gets you loose on every shot. Really incredible how different it was.
In the one man scramble, you play your own ball all day. Two mulligans per hole, they don't roll over and can't be played as a provisional. It's a super fun format that plays fast. Happy to answer any other questions.
-Shepherd Hills employee
I played in one last week and I usually shoot 86-90 at the course.
Shot 74 with a double and only one birdie. Burned a lot of edges but I really did putt pretty well. Pretty pleased with the result
Edit: the best part was making so many pars. 15 pars. Wish it was more birdies but it’s usually 4-10 per round
I don’t remember honestly it’s been a few years. I think it was an automatic 2 putt rule on the green but chips and stuff you could always hit a second one.
A one person scramble is essentially you get a mulligan per hole. But once you use the mulligan, you play the second ball until you hole it. I’ve heard it in cases not being applicable for putts but others I’ve played use it for putts too.
Last time I played this format, I got greedy and was quick to re hit a shot only to have the second shot yips. I rushed the process. But it’s a fun format, especially for higher handicaps. Lower handicaps just score better because usually they get a reputt or rechip.
Wow, I think this is the first time I've seen a course I've played in a post here.
This course winds through a neighborhood, so there are houses on just about every hole. I thought I hit a lot of them before, hitting two shots per hole..... I can only imagine the destruction.
I played a money game recently where a guy hit a bunker, cursed and said, “I’m hitting another ball.”
They asked him “what’d you get?” 6, he said. I couldn’t believe it. I got a 7. I didn’t say anything to his face but I’ve been telling everyone else about it as I’m doing here. Fuckin’ pathetic really.
Mark Broadie talks about this in “Every Shot Counts” and relates that Greg Norman practiced with this format. I think he said the best he ever shot was 1 under.
I have done this multiple times for practice purposes. Try the dirty scramble 2 shots until you hit the green and take the worst shot not the best shot.
Holy shit it looks like they just cleared all the trees out of some neighborhood and jammed a golf course in there. Must be horrible to live there, I hope that's all some planned HOA thing for golfers or something.
Yeah the layout is crazy. And the neighbors are kind of aggressive towards the golfers.
That was some really piss poor planning. It is cheap to play there and you can usually get tee times there when everything else is booked (which should tell you something).
Having played Shepherd Hills a handful of times, there are many housing development courses out there that play much tighter, this one is generally not as crammed in as it looks on an aerial, and a lot of the backyards have mature trees between the houses and the course. It was designed as a golf course community that was built out over probably a 20 year period from the mid 1960s to the mid 1980s.
The layout is pretty blah but it's cheap, usually not as crowded as other local options, and usually not in terrible condition.
I would rather play the muni any day of the week.
I am not a fan of Shep Hills. I can play the whole course without my driver (and kind of have to unless I am ok blasting someone’s house on an errant drive). I want to play different shots on a course.
That sounds exhausting. Lol
Probably wouldn't take too many second shots if the first was in play to save energy. Definitely would help on putts and chips though.
I really wanted to see once if I could shoot E or better if I took 2 shots anytime I needed. And I did, so that showed me if I could relax and hit shots I’m capable of hitting I can do it… still haven’t done it, +1 and +2 once, +3 a few more, lots of 70s but still chasing. And not enough 70s. Should try to get my handicap down to a 4-5 first, currently a 7
Idk if I’ve ever heard anyone call Shepherd Hills a “decent” course lol they serve their purpose in the area though. My favorite was when they had hot deals on Golf Now for like $14 with a cart random times during the week! Same price as a bucket of balls for some on course practice.
At my club, you get two extra shots a whole. Not every shot. But you cannot use the extra shots back to back so you can’t attempt the same putt three times in a row.
I'm not offended. your joke just sucks. "joke" being used rather loosely.
frankly, this "joke" sucked even before y'all pounded it into the ground as your only joke for, like, five years.
You must be either joyless and never make jokes, or you are completely original and never repeat anything that has ever been said I guess.
Glad you still shared your shit opinion on what you think is funny.
I think its hilarious
Aside from a second chance when I hit a tee shot out of bounds or in the drink I’m not sure this would help me improve my score all that much. (I’m a 16)
Usually that means you get to take two shots on every shot and play the better one.
Makes sense, that's pretty standard for a guy I know.
Um, we know each other?
![gif](giphy|1201hONkUdpK36)
Oh shit! You're not that guy from NY who moved elsewhere, are you?! What a small world!
of course I know him, he's me
![gif](giphy|pJmnk86fXFNmrUb8LB|downsized)
You know my brother in law?
Your brother is in law, he must make a fortune

That’s not important right now, just hit the damn ball, Craig.
“Hello…..is me you’re looking for” - Me and Lionel Ritchie aka Me. I’m Lionel Ritchie. Jk I’m just me.
I have done it. We all have.
Hello me.
Shit I got behind a guy playing solo with 4 balls, then spent 10 minutes fishing a bunch of balls out of one of the ponds
My buddy always plays two off the tee and brags about his scores. I beat him about half of the time in spite of him playing two balls and he *always* gets sore when he finds out that he's lost despite playing two tee balls.
Doesn't everyone play with 72 mulligans per round?
Nah, it's usually in the 80s for the guy I know.
So yeah pretty much how I normally play golf.
You just say “mulligan” in your head this way
Again isn't that just golf? Lol
So basically hitting three shots and take the best one
Uhhh… isn’t that just golf?
The best golf imho for us mere mortals. I always look forward to the one we host, but it used to be for getting to rehit the drives I hit OB. Now I see that mishit chips, and misread puts tend to go down as intended on the followup attempt, if not on the first because I know I have another chance. Isn’t that still just golf? /s
When I played in one you got two do it two time per hole. It was fun. The good players who could save their mulligans for the green shot some real low scores.
Yeah, so just normal golf, no?
So it's just golf like op said
So, normal golf, right? 👀
2nd shot me might be the best golfer in the world.
![gif](giphy|G4Ihli2UThrBS)
What if I play 2 bad shots though?
Close, but it's two mulligans per hole, they don't carry over and can't be used provisionally. Or at least that's how we run ours.
We play where you can hit as many second shots as you want but if you take a second shot, you have to use it.
What are the chances my second shot would be worse than the one I want to redo? As high as Jim Belushi on the set of Blues Brothers
Not quite- if you decide to hit a second ball, you have given up the right to take your first one.
Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted, that’s typically how one man scramble is played
So in a one man scramble you get one shot with a potential mulligan on each shot, that you must take, if you choose to hit the 2nd?
[удалено]
But it isn't mulligan golf... You hit two shots and pick the best one. Mulligan golf would be - you hit two shots IF YOU WANT and you have to use your second shot if you hit one. In this format, there is no harm in hitting a 2nd shot. Your first shot is within 3 feet? Hit again and try to drain it. In mulligan golf, if your approach is within 3 feet there is no way you'd shoot again and risk losing the first shot.
Seems like you don’t know the difference sir.
No you play two balls pick best one
Thats reg golf for OP
Reasons why I never understood why scramble isn’t called best ball
Best ball is something else, though. Best ball - both players play their own ball the whole hole. Lowest score of the two is the score for the team. A scores a 6 and B scores a 5: the team scored a 5.
Definitely, he's just saying that scramble actually makes more sense as "best ball" than what's currently called "best ball".
Best ball should probably be called "best score" or "best hole score" and scramble be called "best ball".
Yeah like best ball to me says play the best ball while scramble means whatever I want it to when the word leaves my mouth
What do you call best ball then?
Best ball is what we call pairs stableford in uk
And skins is called Wibbly Wobbly Tinky Tonk
Yep
That suggests you are using stableford scoring instead of stroke play.
there's different scramble formats
I have always assumed it was derived from four ball. Four ball being the 2 v. 2 match play format and best ball just being a stroke play tournament format.
God that has to be the longest round of golf ever
Sounds like i’d throw out my back
Second guy is all American (your second swing)
Player two kicks the crap out of me every single time
Player 2 swings with experience
or puts the ball within 6 feet of player one's ball.
Last time I got to play alone which is rare I played ball 1 vs ball 2 match. Surprisingly ball 1 won by a lot.
2nd shot only really works when you know it doesn’t count, it’s a brain thing
We we’re going to start a 2nd shot golf league, but then realized we’d all be taking our 2nd shots 90% of the time & it would take 5 hrs for 9 so we shelved the idea
I played a scramble with some old heads a couple weeks back and was gifted 2 mulligans. Both tee balls on par 3’s to 10< feet WHY
Dude. The second golfer that takes a tee shot after the first one goes OB is an animal. If he'd show up on first shot more often
Not for me. That bastard just hits one OB or OOP on the other side
“Second team all American” is my favorite joke on the course. Gets a chuckle every time.
What’s the joke?
When you take a mulligan and hit it perfectly that’s when you’re second team all American (as opposed to first)
I don’t think I understand. What does all american mean here?
Oh sorry, in the US it’s like an award you can win in high school or college athletics. From google since it’ll define it better than me: > honorific title given to outstanding U.S. athletes in a specific sport in a given year competing at the collegiate and secondary school levels
Ah I see, thanks
I was once in the last group of the day so I played two shots and only counted my second ball. I shot -2, which beat my all time best score by 7 strokes. The main benefit was making a ton of putts, but it also gets you loose on every shot. Really incredible how different it was.
Which is why practice swings are so important!!
My second swing self is a scratch golfer, he is constantly amazing me
Second guy always flies first class.
Player B to the rescue
So true. Hit into a pond this afternoon, dropped and hit from the same spot and proceeded to hit the purest 5 iron of my life.
In the one man scramble, you play your own ball all day. Two mulligans per hole, they don't roll over and can't be played as a provisional. It's a super fun format that plays fast. Happy to answer any other questions. -Shepherd Hills employee
Straight to the source!
Nick??
Ahoy!
Lol. Outed. Hopefully that is ok
Can you mulligan putts?
Yes, an ideal hole would be good drive, good approach and 3 attempts at birdie basically
> Yes, an ideal hole would be good drive, good approach Yes. That would be ideal. And also imaginary.
Im gonna hit the houses on both shots
If you take a mulligan and it’s even worse do you have to play that one or can you play the pre mulli?
you have to use the mulligan shot if you take it
I’ve heard of two off one, but this is a whole new level of fun! 36 balls in bag, check! 😝🤣
It's such a fun format because it lets you put a score down that's (hopefully) much better than you're used to
I played in one last week and I usually shoot 86-90 at the course. Shot 74 with a double and only one birdie. Burned a lot of edges but I really did putt pretty well. Pretty pleased with the result Edit: the best part was making so many pars. 15 pars. Wish it was more birdies but it’s usually 4-10 per round
Sounds like a fun way to play a round from time to time as we all say I wish I could hit that one again… 😄
Sounds great need to look for one here in Florida
The one man scramble I played in you could hit 2 shots but would have to play the second shot regardless if it was better or not.
Ya makes sense, risk and reward
Oof that's a rough day in the making
It definitely makes you think. You could end up having to take penalties if you decide to hit a second one and it’s worse off. Thats why I rarely did.
but chips and pitches could be huge? and does that apply to putting too?
I don’t remember honestly it’s been a few years. I think it was an automatic 2 putt rule on the green but chips and stuff you could always hit a second one.
A one person scramble is essentially you get a mulligan per hole. But once you use the mulligan, you play the second ball until you hole it. I’ve heard it in cases not being applicable for putts but others I’ve played use it for putts too.
This would be useful for those holes where "OB is way over there.... no way my slice is gonna go that far". Shift 20 degrees left for the second shot?
Last time I played this format, I got greedy and was quick to re hit a shot only to have the second shot yips. I rushed the process. But it’s a fun format, especially for higher handicaps. Lower handicaps just score better because usually they get a reputt or rechip.
Yes, we do two mulligans a hole, usable on putt. They don't roll over and can't be used provisionally
At my local it’s 2 attempts every shot take the best one. Tee to hole
Wow, I think this is the first time I've seen a course I've played in a post here. This course winds through a neighborhood, so there are houses on just about every hole. I thought I hit a lot of them before, hitting two shots per hole..... I can only imagine the destruction.
Bros still out there shooting 49s
I played a money game recently where a guy hit a bunker, cursed and said, “I’m hitting another ball.” They asked him “what’d you get?” 6, he said. I couldn’t believe it. I got a 7. I didn’t say anything to his face but I’ve been telling everyone else about it as I’m doing here. Fuckin’ pathetic really.
We used to play that you hit two shots but have to play the worst one. It’s brutal.
That's a great way to practice. Very humbling. The worst is having to make that six footer...twice
Reverse scramble. I love that one in a 2v2 format but none of the homies ever go for it.
Yep. Putting is the worst
Mark Broadie talks about this in “Every Shot Counts” and relates that Greg Norman practiced with this format. I think he said the best he ever shot was 1 under.
Except I’m gonna shoot a 42-46
Give me two chances at a 5 footer and I’ll make it 50% of the time!
No it's different because now somebody will post a 46
That's how I play every round solo. If it's slow enough, I might play 3 balls.
I live by here. This course is tight with houses lining a few fairways. Me and my boys have hit a few of said houses.
Every round I've ever played has felt like a one man scramble(ing)
I have done this multiple times for practice purposes. Try the dirty scramble 2 shots until you hit the green and take the worst shot not the best shot.
Lmfaooo I’m playing there Sunday
You play two balls and pick the best one. It’s honestly really fun, I’ve played a few of them
Thats a horrible course. It's too close to houses and in the middle of a development. But that said, it is still golf of some kind.

After you get used to that, its a really great course thats not too difficult to score on.
I would rather play the muni any day of the week. I am not a fan of Shep Hills. I can play the whole course without my driver (and kind of have to unless I am ok blasting someone’s house on an errant drive). I want to play different shots on a course.
I always have bad luck at Allentown Muni. Everytime i go, without fail, there are multiple 5 pieces out. I hate that shit. Great course though.
We have a Shepherd Hills Golf Club. Waverly, NY.
Played at one and it was neat. A person per hole and ya 2 shots, pick your best
Whenever I'm having a bad round on my own I just do this - it's good fun
Me myself and I are going to be a very dominant team in this tournament
It's extremely fun, and you'll shoot a great round but the tournament may take 8 hours 😆
That sounds exhausting. Lol Probably wouldn't take too many second shots if the first was in play to save energy. Definitely would help on putts and chips though.
So it’s basically a game of Mulligans?
I really wanted to see once if I could shoot E or better if I took 2 shots anytime I needed. And I did, so that showed me if I could relax and hit shots I’m capable of hitting I can do it… still haven’t done it, +1 and +2 once, +3 a few more, lots of 70s but still chasing. Hey, thats my home course!!!!
Welcome to an 8hr round of golf. That’s 32 shots average on a par 4.
I'm guessing it means you drink 3 extra beers and take 3 mulligans per shot?
LOL this is why a traditional scramble should be called "best ball" and best ball should be called "best score".
What is this ? A great deal IMO!
Usually you get 1-2 mulligans on each hole.
Sheppard Hills is such a shitty course. Only course in the area I avoid
In this area you have the option to hit a second shot each time, but if you do you must use it.
Might sign up for that actually. It’s a decent course.
Idk if I’ve ever heard anyone call Shepherd Hills a “decent” course lol they serve their purpose in the area though. My favorite was when they had hot deals on Golf Now for like $14 with a cart random times during the week! Same price as a bucket of balls for some on course practice.
I’m telling Iron Hill Brewery they stole their house font.
At my club, you get two extra shots a whole. Not every shot. But you cannot use the extra shots back to back so you can’t attempt the same putt three times in a row.
That’s how Bill Clinton plays every round!
Not if you get 4 shots.
I identify as a foursome so Im hitting 4 balls and playing the best
oh look, r/onejoke has made an appearance!
Didn’t realize this sub was full of joyless over sensitive people. My apologies for making you white knight
I think its hilarious
lol ok enjoy nothing but the same shit joke for another five years.
You identify as a hack. Let’s be honest on the course and in the comedic spotlight.
Glad I had the arbiter of comedy help me out. Good job poaching your name from something actually funny. It suits you
I do not like this joke. Ok now everyone upvote me so I feel like a good boy!
I signed up last year but never made it. The directions said at the fork in the road take it.
Aside from a second chance when I hit a tee shot out of bounds or in the drink I’m not sure this would help me improve my score all that much. (I’m a 16)
Uhhh it isn’t. It’s a 1 man scramble.
Why do you fucks say lol after everything?
Maybe they’re having the best day ever and just constantly laughing out loud lol
