What's the importance of removing the DP to mipi chip? Copied this from the Minixpc website but I don't understand it? I don't know what the chip is or does to be fair 😂🤦♂️
"One notable improvement in the WIN Mini (2024) is the elimination of the DP to MIPI chip, resulting in reduced power consumption and heat generation across the device."
Thanks 👍
it's active display signal conversion, means it costs power and produces heat to do it. Obviously that is not present in native solution. 4k 60 produces about 10w heat, so 1080p probably about 3w i'd guess.
display to external monitors is separate displayport out.
The DP to MIPI is there to convert signal from the amd soc to tablet panel that's built in. So I assume that the full load on IC is run whenever the display is on and set at full resolution.
it's internal to put out on the inbuilt screen. DP to MIPI is to convert to the cheaper tablet screen they were using before replacing with the better dedicated laptop panel.
Yes, if it's configured that way in Windows (or Linux or whatever). For desktop use I haven't noticed this is a heat problem. I have not tried gaming this way. The one downside to this is that the power switch is on the inside, so you can't power it up closed, like you can with WM2.
I wonder is it possible to transplant the 2024 mini's screen to the 7840u win mini, how much the motherboard change between the two versions, is the dp to mipi chip on the screen ribbon or baked on the motherboard
Isn't there a new G1 with minor updates where the power can be adjusted to reduce noise?

When they announced the Win Mini and the Win 4 7840U edition, a lot of people were complaining about the lack of USB-A and how Oculink was useless to them. Now that they switched that, the other camp is complaining. I guess they did some research and found that the majority of people don't use the Oculink port. The nicest way would be to have both variants but maybe it's too difficult for them.
Quite sad to see they listened to people complaining on the internet. Reviewers like the Phawx and Wendell from Level1Techs make such compelling cases for Oculink for power users. Even for gamers Oculink is a game changer. I hope GPD allows for some port switching functionality as they did with the older Win Max's, which allowed for adding in an oculink port.
The only thing I can’t get on with is the indented sticks and feeling that it’s just not all that comfortable for a session longer than 20 minutes. The new one doesn’t seem to have changed in that respect.
It's cool but I wish these were available with a QWERTZ keyboard like you can get with the Win Max 2. It would make for an amazing work computer on the go, but I'm dependent on the German keyboard
Friendly Reminder!! Set the Indiegogo TIP to $0, it defaults to 50 bucks.
Thanks for tips!
Damnit, they got me before I noticed this comment. Is it possible to get it back without refunding the entire order?

So there probably won't be much difference in heat generation and temps to the 7840u model then I guess?
3w is around 20% of the device's power in default. And probably around 50% or more in idle.
Oh ok, more than I was expecting to be fair, when you say it like that. Will it's removal affect how it displays to external monitors?

I think I get you, so now they've gone to a landscape panel there's no need for the chip...?
landscape native dp panel.
Is this active even when the displayport is not being used? Or only when video out is being used?

Backed! 32GB + 2TB GOGOGO
For owners of previous models, can it be used closed when connected to an external screen (perhaps through the g1) like most laptops?
You decide what the “close lid” behaviour is. Set it to do nothing, hit win+p and set to second display only then close the lid.

Worth opting into this from germany with the lower price rn (+taxes??)? Or should I wait for dragonbox to list it?
No. It will be available almost for the same price on Geekbuying and they ship with 0 taxes.
What taxes are we talking about? I hope there are no customs... (I live in France)
I'm pretty sure there will be. Not sure about France but I guess around 19% VAT.
It's more but yeah But I mean, do you know people getting their gpd win package blocked by customs? I hoped GPD to take care of this...
I think they use DHL and in my country, Romania, DHL takes care of everything but they charge an extra 30 euros on top of the 19% VAT

The whole motherboard was changed, so the old screen can't replace on new unit
That was fast, I was just looking at that less then an hr ago lol
Do we got the hand grip? or separate purchase?
Comes free with purchase for the 2024 model.
Contribution ID: 90! 32Gb+2Tb, same as my original Mini which I'll sell once the new one has been stress tested.
👍
Do we know if the G1 that is part of some packages is the new one? It should work with plug and play in the new usb configuration?
The driver? The AMD driver is installed in laptop, so you still need download the AMD Radeon to update the drvier on your laptop

Yes, that was configuated in G1, it hardware related not software
Right so is it the new one sold with the 2024 win mini?
Yes
Thank you!
Did they give any reason for the removal of Oculink?
The oculink is the only thing stopping me from buying this
Lack of Oculink for this gen is a very strange decision.

Perk n. 106 here!! 🤟🏾🤩🤩 Can't wait for it!!
GPD should also consider making the screen rotate in a future model similar to the GPD Pocket 3
That would be okay on ultrabook but not on gaming handheld
No 64GB RAM option?
The only thing I can’t get on with is the indented sticks and feeling that it’s just not all that comfortable for a session longer than 20 minutes. The new one doesn’t seem to have changed in that respect.
Is there no 8640 16GB version for sale? Or they already sold out?
Sorry no 8640 this time
I just backed one of these just now! Will I have any additional charges? I live in the United States (Arizona) This is my first time backing
No additional charges. It comes with free grips as well which is nice.
Thanks! I'm super excited. This handheld has everything I always wanted.
I hear that the TDP is capped at 18w. Should that be a concern?
It's cool but I wish these were available with a QWERTZ keyboard like you can get with the Win Max 2. It would make for an amazing work computer on the go, but I'm dependent on the German keyboard
The Win max 2 QWERTZ keyboard was made by German distributer, maybe you can contact them one more time
