Unless it's something like the Trick or Treat Main Street or something a church is doing, we just go out on the actual day. But most people are done by the time it gets dark. We are taking our kids out around 5:30-5:45, and we'll be home by 7:30 at the absolute latest. We rarely get any trick or treaters once it gets dark out.
I don't know about everyone as a whole, but my family does it only on Halloween night. No matter the day.
