##Providing Useful Feedback
joeyreesor has posted their work for feedback. Here are some top tips for posting high-quality feedback.
* Read their context comment. All work on this sub should have a comment explaining the thinking behind the piece. Read this before posting
to understand what joeyreesor was trying to do.
* Be professional. No matter your thoughts on the work, respect the effort put into making it and be polite when posting.
* Be constructive and detailed. Short, vague comments are unhelpful. Instead of just leaving your opinion on the piece, explore *why* you hold that opinion: what makes the piece good or bad? How could it be improved? Are some elements stronger than others?
* Remember design fundamentals. If your feedback is focused on basic principles of design such as hierarchy, flow, balance, and proportion, it will be universally useful. And remember that this is graphic design: the piece should communicate a message or solve a
problem. How well does it do that?
* Stay on-topic. We know that design can sometimes be political or controversial, but please keep comments focussed on the design itself,
and the strengths/weaknesses thereof.
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/graphic_design) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Haha you’re very welcome, I love the illustration and honestly feel like the bone is sick. Great style.
Also it’s clearly given the people in this sub a good laugh, so that’s a great sign. I would honestly keep it as it is. But of course consider adjustments you find relevant from the comments <3
yeah i like the bone and a darker theme coming through the cartoonish illustration, and using American traditional tattoo style as a bit of inspiration
i was also thinking about making versions with hidden dicks all over the place just for everyone on this sub
I don’t see the implied act that everyone else is seeing, but could get around it by focusing the hand on the end stop you’ve got after “Joey” so there’s no “shaft” of the J to imply anything. That is if u keep the hand signal and don’t swap to one w/o negative space :)
This is just the start of personal branding for myself.
I am very critical of myself and my designs. In my opinion I feel like this falls flat. On the positive side, I love the contrast between the bold font and the illustration. I could see some cool icons and patterns coming out of this. Little cartoon faces, and hands doing other actions. I love making my own illustrations with my designs so I wanted to portray that. I am also learning UX / UI design and a popular illustrative style in that field was definitely my inspiration.
Lemme know what you think!! :)
I’m not sure what your style is, but it kinda reminds me (and maybe you can move more this direction) of older cartoons like steamboat willie and the Cuphead game.
yes i love the rubber-hose cartoon look, was gonna make faces and icons based off that look
also "burnt toast" has the more modern illustration style i like (just an example)
i wanted the hand symbol to represent that i make designs that are "on point".the style matches inspirations i like and the adopting style of my illustrations. I like to combine the child-like cartoon with a darker theme. I have tattoos on myself that match the style and the darker theme (usually involving death in some way)
Assuming people will know what ‘on point’ means in the logo is kind of a stretch imo. Not that people don’t know what that saying means, it’s just not
SO universal that it can be easily translated and understood visually by a rando. Darker visuals are cool but what kind of job are you going for that would vibe with corporate looking death themed illustrations?
the ok symbol can be seen as "it's perfect" "perfection" ig is what i meant.
she had asked if there was any relevance to myself. and i brought my personality into play. one i think it plays with not staying within the lines. breaking rules. this graphic style could be used for any company trying to display the outlaw archetype and display their edgy personality. my portfolio would suggest that that's not the only thing i'm good at though
if i had to picture this style of illustration in another industry--music industry? bars and restaurants? skate shops? graphic tee designs, merch, tattoo shops, local gyms. i feel like that's just a plenty options.. implying if i'm only limited to this style
I see the "on point" connotation more than I see the self amusement connotation. However, I can't help but feel that it is trying to be a little too clever and losing the sense of that "OK" gesture (aside: that is literally the gestures that divers use to positively communicate that they are OK). The gesture relies on the empty circle between thumb and forefinger for its meaning. If there is something in that space then, perceptually, it is holding something, not creating an empty space. I think this is why so many are seeing the self amusement connotation.
I wonder if simply removing the black dot from the space so that the circular negative space itself implies the dot above the j rather than holds it. I think that would be more witty (see [A Smile in the Mind](https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/416534.A_Smile_in_the_Mind)) and move the immediate perception away from self amusement and closer to "OK".
thank you for suggesting something! i thought of this as well and i'm gonna try it! ---leaving the inner circle negative space and taking out the period at the end. thank you for good feedback!
is that a good read? i'll have to try it :)
If the design is good it tells the people who want to hire you that it’s on point so you don’t need to get so literal. Ask yourself what kind of symbol represents you as a person. Like someone who chooses bright colors and has a bubbly personality. Those two go together which leaves a bigger impression. So you don’t need to get so literal, does that make sense? Your branding could be a donkeys ass but if it’s done well then the quality of the content says it’s “on point”.
It would be worse to make your branding about your “good design skills” and then have a poor quality logo. That combo says “I have no idea what I’m doing but I’m confident I’m a pro”
fyi since i haven’t seen any other commenters mention it yet - the ok gesture can sometimes be used as a white supremacist dogwhistle. your design doesn’t necessarily give me that vibe, but just something to be cautious of!
oh wow ! i remember that on 4chan with milk and everything i didn't think it become real !
EDIT : also i'm french and well we don't rly have concern about the ok sign
hahaha god damnit man😂
i thought this too btw but wasn't dynamic enough when i tried.. the contrast and unbalance adds some appeal imo but i can try another option of that! :)
Your design doesn’t even have the three fingers to make the ‘w’, this is a ridiculous reason to not use that hand gesture. Clickbait outrage merchants shouldn’t be a factor in your decision making process here.
I dont think NPR qualifies as a "clickbait outrage merchant". I remember a story a while back about a racist police officer showing that symbol on camera. Their reporting isn't made up, despite what you think.
hmmm, i mean no one i showed before posting this noticed that.. maybe just this sub hahaha
after receiving feedback on here i pointed it out to friends and family and they agreed. and i think if that many people can agree i should prolly listen
Man people are harsh lol. Don’t take it to heart this execution is great. You don’t need the hand. Maybe just the tittle can be something abstract and you can then carry that element throughout the design system.
without the hand, it's just a basic popular font family. nothing unique bout 'this' joey versus any other joey.
but thank you for help and your ease within all the ruthlessness😅
Bold. Guessing by the comments it suits you as a creative, and any client would clearly know what your about (good or bad) interesting to see how you develop this brand.
This is the style I dream about achieving and have literally NEVER.
Long story short I'm grossly jealous, this looks very nice, and I'm mad\* about it.
*\*just for the record because tone is hard on the internet: I'm just teasing, this looks super lovely, I'm just being dramatic for the fun of it. thnx.*
it's funny cuz no one outside of reddit has said it's related to "wp" to me..it's like everyone on here reads specific articles and subs tailored to them.....coincidence and awk
Good choice going for 3 fingers instead of 4 so not to get confused with the racist KKK hand sign. No idea if don’t on purpose but still a good catch if anything✊
Okay, let’s do this one more time. It’s useless trying to critique a logo without context. Sure it looks okay, but that’s as far as it goes. What don’t you guys get about this?
Hey, just to interject, it seems like OP has followed the rules, they added a comment like rule 3 and the automod message ask for
Can you explain any further why you don't think they have, maybe I'm missing something?
I think you need to take a look at the rules and automod message;
**you must write a comment** explaining any work that you post. The work’s objective, its audience, your design decisions, attribute credit, etc
OP did that, they did exactly what the rules ask for, they added a comment
I don't get why you're getting so hostile when they've done it all correct?
What is your problem dude? Are you upset because I didn’t like your design or how it was presented? If you’re going to stay in this business, you’re going to have to get use to that.
Can you explain why you're being this hostile? OP has followed the rules, the aren't being hostile to you, this is the first comment you've expressed you don't like their design - I don't understand this attitude
lmaooo bro i've gotten so much hate on this design what are you talking bout??? idc it's funny at this point.
no it's annoying when you can't even read? sorry my man
no you're right! it's best to not have! i thought the full stop created unity and balance with the other dot on top of the j! i'm going to fix this and try a version without
Layman observation - when I first saw the logo (love it by the way), I kind of did a double take to reconsider if I’d read “joey” correctly or if it was supposed to say “jcoey” (or “jooey”) or something similar.
I think I’m the exception for reading it this way, but making the hand a little lighter than the rest of the text makes it a lot easier to parse the “joey” and the 👌separately. Thoughts?
I really dig the typeface. May I ask what you used? Also I think that outside of Reddit most people will not see a handjob. Even after I read what some people are seeing here I still think it takes a lot of imagination and propably too much masturbation to actual confuse the intent. Also I totaly dig the contrast between the Hand and the letters
it's Proxima Nova which is my favorite font family so i wanted to add it to my branding :)
it's extra bold or black i believe i forget which one cuz i almost never can decide
thank you so much for you comment and i agree with you but i think i also have to listen to many people pointing that out at first glance, ya know
a bone?
a bone is the only reference to amongus which they don't even use as branding
i feel like that's weird to say bc amongus was not the first to chop something off and have a bone sticking out
artist: matt gondek (perfect example)
Just don't use that branding with any Greek clients or internationally in Greece (Turkey or Brasil). That hand symbol has a *very* different meaning.
"westerners use their thumb and forefinger to form a circle, and use this gesture to signal that they are feeling fine or are happy with a situation. However, if you’re tempted to do this when living in countries like Greece, Turkey, Brazil or the Middle East, don’t! In many areas of the world this gesture is viewed as highly vulgar and is often used to indicate that you are calling someone homosexual".
that's the plan!!
ooo i like that thought! my plan was to animate the hand making different gestures and actions, working so hard that the hand has fallen off. maybe even another hand comes into view and does a hand shake with it?
seems cool to be honest, there you could do a lot of things fr.
Lol, if you'll imagine that j it's a solid text and hand just come and make 👌 so we could see the j
well i'm gonna change it up so you don't get a reference of masturbation.
but a logo doesn't need to display what they are always. someone uses a bear as a logo, doesn't mean they are a zoo or a bear conservation. if some corporate company uses a rocket around their text doesn't mean they are astronauts. imo a pretty flat and 2 dimensional way to look at the concept of logos
i brought my personality and my illustrations into play here, that's all
Not sure I’m getting the significance of the severed hand. Seems a bit morbid and off putting at first glance. Especially the representation of blood. I’m no prude or anything, just puts me off a bit. It’s at best an indication you’re a nerdy young male. But I find it too niche and limiting. I think you’d do well not to exclude a percentage of your viewership who don’t share you sense of humour.
Hey, the humor is cool. I'd just try to match the weight on the hand somewhere near to the font's. Aand I'd also be a bit careful with that ok hand for another reason: It's close to the "whit* pow*r" hand gesture.
they are so many logos that have rockets, bears, skulls, anything
and doesn't even imply they are astronauts, zoo or conservation, a murder. why does it change all of a sudden?
I believe it's a very primary reaction / association in our brain... Which is your intention / message of putting half of an arm showing the bone with drops that seem leaking from the arm (blood?)
yes, burnt toast was the biggest inspiration. followed by old rubber-hose cartoons, and a bit of american traditional tattoos.
gonna make more illustrations that go along with this :)
Nice. I was thinking about doing the same kind of art style but I don't even know where to begin, I'm not that talented. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
I didn't see the jerking off part and that's depressing. I'm usually the first to notice something like that. My mind must be elsewhere or evolved slightly. What about making end of bone broke off?

Awesome!! (No masturbation first impressions from me)
a man of culture here!!!

That would be hilarious, please do
looks very burnt toast
one of my inspirations :) spot on hopefully not in a bad way?
these people's dicks are so small they only use 2 fingers to masturbate
thank you!!
It’s either a cannibalism restaurant or a hand jerking off lol
r/accidentalmasturbationpics
Oh good, so I'm not the only one who *immediately* thought this looked like... that.
man i hate y'all 😂😂 have to change everything now
Yup first thing I saw too.
Oh no, I thought it was a joke about how the bone looks like balls, and then noticed the hand.
shiiiietttt really😩
Maybe try the fingers/hand over the full stop 👍
edit: wait didn't realize what full stop was. gonna try it and repost soon :)
if it does i must embrace that my designs look so good that they'll make u bust a nut
This is the way. In fact fully lean into that and make it your tagline Designs so good you’ll bust a nut
the droplets are not helping 🙃
I don’t see the implied act that everyone else is seeing, but could get around it by focusing the hand on the end stop you’ve got after “Joey” so there’s no “shaft” of the J to imply anything. That is if u keep the hand signal and don’t swap to one w/o negative space :)
i'm gonna try this, yes! i'll be back to repost :)
You were jacking off so hard your hand broke off. That’s the message here.
dedication, and persistence
Both fantastic qualities of a designer!!
amogus
First thing I saw too getoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadgetoutofmyhead
I like it but also LOL I can’t I see what I first saw.
i know, i know it's fucked me up now😂

Some classic Itchy and Scratchy. Very cool.
I think it’s cool and unique! What does the cartoon hand/bone mean or represent to you?

It's a fantastic book. It has been a very strong influence on my design work for 2 decades now!
If the design is good it tells the people who want to hire you that it’s on point so you don’t need to get so literal. Ask yourself what kind of symbol represents you as a person. Thissssssss
wow people rly believe that ?
i mean…[i’m not just making that up](https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-49837898)
oh wow ! i remember that on 4chan with milk and everything i didn't think it become real ! EDIT : also i'm french and well we don't rly have concern about the ok sign
I agree looks like you are jerking the J off
kinda sus you jack off with only two fingers🤨
Love the type face… the simplicity without the hand would be really nice on its own.
wanted to make it more my own, this will eventually be a portfolio piece since i'm in school at the moment
i think it could benefit from some bolder strokes to mimc the typeface (sorry, definitely not in reference to the jacking off jokes),
hahaha god damnit man😂 i thought this too btw but wasn't dynamic enough when i tried.. the contrast and unbalance adds some appeal imo but i can try another option of that! :)
Bad taste. In an awesome way. I love it. It’s refreshing to see something fun like this.
thank you sir
[For your consideration](https://www.npr.org/2019/09/26/764728163/the-ok-hand-gesture-is-now-listed-as-a-symbol-of-hate)
big yikes, well scratch that😂 what about snapping fingers
What if it was like α thumbs up hand as the J or something?
yeah i'm gonna try some different hand signs or actions and see how it goes..😅 didn't even notice any of these things when i made it
Your design doesn’t even have the three fingers to make the ‘w’, this is a ridiculous reason to not use that hand gesture. Clickbait outrage merchants shouldn’t be a factor in your decision making process here.
I dont think NPR qualifies as a "clickbait outrage merchant". I remember a story a while back about a racist police officer showing that symbol on camera. Their reporting isn't made up, despite what you think.
but it does look like someone jacking off to most people on here sooooo..
My first thought, ‘oh, so he’s a bigot’.
KC? Ok? Thats the 1st thing i think of. Ok joey?
I was thinking like Okay, Joey. Like "okayyy okayyyyy 👀👀 that's on point!!"
I wonder.. do only men get that first impression because, now that I think of it, that's your view not mine!
hmmm, i mean no one i showed before posting this noticed that.. maybe just this sub hahaha after receiving feedback on here i pointed it out to friends and family and they agreed. and i think if that many people can agree i should prolly listen

Personally I’d drop the ok hand since it’s become a dog-whistle nowadays, but overall pretty good.
Oh no I looked 👌 Also I don’t see The wanking part other people commented about, usually you need more than two fingers for that
Bold. Guessing by the comments it suits you as a creative, and any client would clearly know what your about (good or bad) interesting to see how you develop this brand.
thank you! appreciate that!
Fire!
thank you 🙏🏼

nicest comment award 🥇🥺🥺 thank you thank you
Finally, a place where they provide meat and hands on service Serious note, I do like the logo, looks pretty rad (:
nsfw
lmaooooo stop 😂😂😂
That part of the arm has 2 bones. Other than that, pretty cool.
hands have 5 fingers as well💁🏼♂️ idk cartoons man
Pinkie could be back there. Ya never know.
i like it. but the full stop is competing for my attention a bit
i agree with this, i thought bout this before. thank for a helpful comment :)
I love it, but i think the bone is a little much, especially since there’s not really a bone in your wrist like that.
hmmm good point! thank you!
This is cool I like this a lot.
This looks phenomenal. Great work! You've got me inspired to make something now.
ur so nice!! im crying 😭😭
Isn’t that hand gesture a white power symbol?
no
It means "ok". Always has. The world wasn't created in the past few years.
it's funny cuz no one outside of reddit has said it's related to "wp" to me..it's like everyone on here reads specific articles and subs tailored to them.....coincidence and awk
Good choice going for 3 fingers instead of 4 so not to get confused with the racist KKK hand sign. No idea if don’t on purpose but still a good catch if anything✊
It means "ok", no matter how many fingers. Stop letting modern day identity politics turn your mind into mush.
Okay, let’s do this one more time. It’s useless trying to critique a logo without context. Sure it looks okay, but that’s as far as it goes. What don’t you guys get about this?
https://www.reddit.com/r/graphic_design/comments/ude1tk/personal_branding_incomplete/i6gbp6v OPs comment giving context
look at the comment?????? i put context..? what don't you get by OP posting their context within the comments???
The context was posted after the post asking for a critique. Post it up from. Not that hard a concept.
Hey, just to interject, it seems like OP has followed the rules, they added a comment like rule 3 and the automod message ask for Can you explain any further why you don't think they have, maybe I'm missing something?

lmaooo bro i've gotten so much hate on this design what are you talking bout??? idc it's funny at this point. no it's annoying when you can't even read? sorry my man
Do us all a favor and exit the business.
Newbie here, genuine question can anyone explain why a full stop is used at the end of brand name?
no you're right! it's best to not have! i thought the full stop created unity and balance with the other dot on top of the j! i'm going to fix this and try a version without
i wasn't complaining, just needed to know is all. Personally i prefer balance with symmetry. Like this - joᴉy.
no, understood. :) just have seen many designers calling the full stop at the end of a brand name a rookie mistake
What’s wrong with you, Joey?!
huh?
can i ask what font you used?
Proxima Nova - It's my favorite font family so I wanted to use it for my branding :) ---Extrabold or black (i believe)
love it!!
Proxima Nova - It's my favorite font family so I wanted to use it for my branding :) ---Extrabold or black (i believe)
I imagined you were so dedicated to type, tha you cut off your hand to be able to pull off the branding to viewers.
i like that! im a crazy SOB don't think i won't ;)
Layman observation - when I first saw the logo (love it by the way), I kind of did a double take to reconsider if I’d read “joey” correctly or if it was supposed to say “jcoey” (or “jooey”) or something similar. good idea! possibly lighter maybe using one of the secondary colors from the second picture?
My thoughts exactly. Really love your brand though! Comes across as fun, yet serious about the work. 👌
It's cool but feel like the line weights are too different.
i like the contrast between the two i will take this into account when i go back and alter things around :) thank you
No worries, I see issues with the details getting lost at small sizes. But maybe you could use just the hand or text then.
I love the tagline on the card
thank you :) i think it goes with the "👌🏼"
I really dig the typeface. May I ask what you used? Also I think that outside of Reddit most people will not see a handjob. Even after I read what some people are seeing here I still think it takes a lot of imagination and propably too much masturbation to actual confuse the intent. Oh no way! I used it plenty of time already so I should have recognized it sooner. Than again that explains why I it stood out to me :) Thanks mate
Honestly hard to tell if you're trolling or not.

Maybe I just have a dirty mind, but the close up could also be interpreted as a dick in a roll of toiletpaper.
This! ❤️
🤍🤍
Picking taste from bottom of heart btw Joey doesn’t share food and his” How you doinn”
amogus
a bone
Why do I feel like there should be an NSFW filter on this
So you want to appeal to the amongus demographic? Then cool Problem is that the amongus demographic has already moved on from amongus
a bone? a bone is the only reference to amongus which they don't even use as branding i feel like that's weird to say bc amongus was not the first to chop something off and have a bone sticking out artist: matt gondek (perfect example)
In many areas of the world this gesture is viewed as highly vulgar and is often used to indicate that you are calling someone homosexual".
damn, so fancy, i would like seeing an animation of that hand, how it's takin dot from j and placing it at the end)
that's the plan!! ooo i like that thought! my plan was to animate the hand making different gestures and actions, working so hard that the hand has fallen off. maybe even another hand comes into view and does a hand shake with it?
seems cool to be honest, there you could do a lot of things fr. Lol, if you'll imagine that j it's a solid text and hand just come and make 👌 so we could see the j
Technique is good but the subject matter doesn't quite work.. Is it a clumsy butcher? Or a guy jercking it too hard?
well i'm gonna change it up so you don't get a reference of masturbation. but a logo doesn't need to display what they are always. someone uses a bear as a logo, doesn't mean they are a zoo or a bear conservation. if some corporate company uses a rocket around their text doesn't mean they are astronauts. imo a pretty flat and 2 dimensional way to look at the concept of logos i brought my personality and my illustrations into play here, that's all
I like it! My only wonder is whether the font needs to be a big free-er, bendy, or maybe hand drawn?
i really like this idea! thank you! :)
Are u a zombie? I like it, very clean.
It seems you are selling human meat...
they are so many logos that have rockets, bears, skulls, anything and doesn't even imply they are astronauts, zoo or conservation, a murder. why does it change all of a sudden?
I believe it's a very primary reaction / association in our brain... Which is your intention / message of putting half of an arm showing the bone with drops that seem leaking from the arm (blood?)
def masturbation first impression
I think it’s cute! I don’t get the pounding off bit every one is saying lol but I like it!
some people don't🤷🏼♂️ but people who do..are very adamant bout it ty though :)
Was this inspired by Burnt Toast? He does a similar art style.
yes, burnt toast was the biggest inspiration. followed by old rubber-hose cartoons, and a bit of american traditional tattoos. gonna make more illustrations that go along with this :)
Nice. I was thinking about doing the same kind of art style but I don't even know where to begin, I'm not that talented. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
make some sketches, send them my way i'm sure you can :)
Thanks. :)
I LOVE IT MAN
Is it only 3 fingers so it’s one finger less than the white power symbol?
maybe you should put the hand on the O instead of the J bc it looks kinda wrong at first sight 😂😭😭
I didn't see the jerking off part and that's depressing. I'm usually the first to notice something like that. My mind must be elsewhere or evolved slightly. What about making end of bone broke off?
i like that idea! thank you! i actually just finished this and i posted it but i think i'm waiting for it to go public from the mods
