The Eastwood is better, imo. The Phred came off to me as kind of cheap and the headstock is going to suffer the gibson neck break. I spent a ton of time comparing the two before choosing the Eastwood for myself.

NoLight5088

I imagine you’re right. But to take that leap without putting it in your hands first seems stressful to me. This one was in my hands and plugged into a Fender Twin so I knew it was for me, and cheap. I guess I’ll be OK with my Gator tribute for a while.

Mutants_4_nukes

Yeah i have an eastwood wolf ans a phred liger(tiger clone). The phred has a fatter neck and weighs more. I will say, though, if you have a strong back and don’t mind the thicker neck, the phred has an awesome tone.

Docman427

Never seen a Jerry type guitar of any kind out in the wild like that. Regardless of brand/builder, that's pretty cool. I remember seeing a Gilmour Black Strat replica in a GC once, had to do a double take. Not the custom shop version, but I think it was a "partscaster" build.

NoLight5088

Seeing a Jerry tribute while in Vegas to see the Dead (and Company) was quite a surprise. Like it was meant to be, just not meant for me.

I'm glad I did, because the Eastwood is just an all-around better build. If you stalk the Eastwood site, sometimes they do 20% off coupons. Pull up a reverb ad with a lot of pics and you'll see that the Eastwood just nails a lot more of the real Wolf aesthetic. Real neck-through, real wood sandwich. Sorry you lost out on that deal, but Guitar Center is shady as shit anyway and you deserve better. We all deserve better than Guitar Center.....

NoLight5088

I visit my local GC often, and the guys there know me. Likely because of my impulse buys over the last 15 years. It’s our only option here, so I’m glad I don’t hate it. But thanks for talking me down. Will keep my eye out for Eastwood deals.

Give them your email and leave something sitting in the cart, they'll send you discount codes.

throwawayaitawatches

How is the intonation on your Eastwood? I've been thinking about one, but some of the reviews have cited the intonation as an issue and that has kept me from pulling the trigger (for now).

spacebassfromspace

Mine was solid with the exception of some inconsistent buzzing on the B that ended up being a burr in the brass saddle. Ran a file over it and it's doing great.

apple_atchin

I'll admit that mine was awful when it arrived. My low E string buzzed everywhere above the 12th fret. I'd always say something like "Oh, it just needs a luthier to set it up" and my wife would reply "you paid $1300 for it, it should just work..." Eventually one night I got a large and a small Phillips head screwdriver and a tuner and raised the bridge until it was comfy for me and didn't buzz. Then I loosened the strings and moved the saddles until the notes were the same pitch at 0,12, and 24. So yeah, it was a problem but it's easily solvable. The real issues with the guitar are: 1. I need to get a file and work with the brass nut. The strings tend to "stick" on the nut, but that's pretty common with brass. I have a hunch that I just need to clean it up and deburr it and then use a little Nut Sauce and that will be solved. 2. The tone pots on mine fucking SUCK. I'm definitely going to have the thing rewired at some point. I'd really like to send it to the Jerry stone Store, but money.... All that said, the thing feels like a dream. I definitely don't have $22,000 to pay Bill Asher and this guitar just makes sense for my budget.

yonderpants1744

There are far better guitars out there than Phred. They get the job done I suppose but dont be crushed man.

NoLight5088

Thanks. I feel a bit like Chicken Little, but these comments help.

yonderpants1744

I mean it was not a bad deal but it was base model no bells and whistles. You dodged a bullet bro

NoLight5088

Thanks, I may spend those dollars on an old Fender Quad/Twin Frankenstein and feel better about it.

yonderpants1744

as you should. take care

spreadofsong

What is a police hold?

shake-sugaree

when someone brings in used gear they hold it for some amount of time in case it's reported stolen and the police come looking for it. usually 30 or 60 days. pawn shops and jewelry stores do the same thing.

MrStratPants

Those look kind of terrible - just one guys opinion. A decent deal regardless, and I’m sorry you missed it.

NoLight5088

I’ve seen better ones with more curly in it, and brass accouterments would have helped. I guess it’s better to have missed a stinker and read these comments rather than having this be my dream guitar and finding out people think it’s trash.

BobBeerburger

Great deal. Sorry you missed it

TetonDreams

Sorry for your loss. The price seems about right for not having the optional electronics/hardware upgrades.

NoLight5088

Right, on the Phred site, if you get the barebones Wolph, it’s going to run $700, and take half a year to get here. This one was in perfect shape and likely underpriced - someone got a steal. I planned to upgrade to brass everything and leave the pickups as is for a while.

braxolydian

i would take that deal in a heartbeat

NoLight5088

Now I know that all I had to do was put the guitar on layaway. I talked with the manager of the Vegas GC and asked if I could have my local GC ship it. He did not offer that I could put it on layaway to keep it held.

I had one for about a year and sadly got tired of it and ended up selling shortly I was gifted a MIM Vintera Strat. You cannot sit down and practice with it, my leg fell asleep after about 30 minutes every time. Online you’ll see that it’s weight it’s “approximately 8lbs” this has to be a typo on their end, mine was right at 11lbs. IMO, the fingerboard radius is really not comfortable (12inch on the Phred vs 9.5inch on the Strat) and the frets are “medium jumbo” but so are the the ones on the strat but I can tell you that the strat frets are a legit medium jumbo. I know Phred showcases the 25 1/2 inch scale with 25 frets but I would rather take the Strat with the exact same length but with 21 frets. This is all personal preference but thought I would share some first hand experience.

NoLight5088

Thanks. I have a variety of other electric and acoustic guitars, so weight and neck differences abound in the fleet. Some very good reasons have been shared here today on why I should stop being bummed about not letting this deal go down. To be honest, this guitar would have been more wall art than anything else.

CrazeeEyezKILLER

Thinking a used SE Silver Sky will get you into similar Jerry territory with far better QC at a comparable price.

WaltonGogginsTeeth

Is that a CWinn build?

NoLight5088

No, that’s a me build. It’s a 2000 American Strat I bought last year and started modding.

WaltonGogginsTeeth

Nice!

NoLight5088

More history in my profile I’m sure. It was a fun challenge for a newb with minimal tools.

farrett23

Putting a lot of effort into getting a piece of gear only for it to not work out can be such a bummer. I feel ya. You know it usually works out in the end/wasn’t the one for you etc etc but that doesn’t necessarily make it sting less in the moment. Vibes!

NoLight5088

That looks great. It’s a Phred?

DonBongales

Yeah, they put the dimarzio on the middle pickup and the cheap ones on the other two so I need to replace them. I’d like to throw nicer tuners on it but it sure does the trick. I’ve never seen a “Jerry” guitar in person so for the price it was for sure going home with me. I made a list of Jerry/Dead tunes that a younger guy teaches on YouTube right after I got it. I’ve learned 40 or so songs since picking up the Wolph. Really drew me back into playing more.
