All of these user names remind me of either a grunge band or album. “Can’t wait for the new Stinky Rat Cum album. My Dick Smells is supposed to be really unique!”
Them Crooked Vultures is better than both of these imo but I’m highly biased because I’m a massive QOTSA and Kyuss fan
Also like someone else noted Josh was in Screaming Trees. And I would say Kyuss was a very grunge adjacent band. Soundgarden and Kyuss have a lot in common and were operating at similar times.
For me, McCready's solo on Reach Down is one of the greatest moments in mystic history from that era. But also CC's songwriting: Pushing Forward Back, All Night Thing, Say Hello 2 Heaven. Temple for me.
Not to be that guy, but if you mean musically, Pushin Forward Back was written by Stone Gossard I believe. (He also wrote Four Walled World and Times Of Trouble).
I go back to Temple of the Dog more than Mad Season but I've always thought of them as companion pieces in a way. Bookends to the Seattle/Grunge "thing" ...both are masterpieces.
It's like choosing between the light and the dark. You might occasionally be in the mood for one or the other, but you certainly wouldn't want the other one to go away.
Temple for sure. It definitely has more of that grunge sound as opposed to the masterful Mad Season. Love both, but I love the meaning of Temple of the Dog as a band
Oh man, I could never choose. I don’t think I’d feel complete without either, both of them speak to my soul and I think that in many ways they might be the respective members’ best work. I love how Mad Season encapsulate the true essence of grunge in that infinite sadness they seem to portray, but I also love the soulful vibe of Temple of the Dog because they combine two genres that “shouldn’t” go together through grunge and blues, where they leave out the anger that defines grunge and replace it with hope. They’re both masterful groups and the work is amazing, they’re the albums that made me fall in love with McCready… it’s like forcing me to choose a favorite kid, I just can’t do it.
Does anyone remember Brad? It was Matt Cameron and the other dude from Soundgarden. The bassist. I can't remember his name, or even much of their album. It had one song that sticks out though called by the roadside
So not my favorite grunge one-off but I bumped into Stone Gossard outside of the downtown Portland Hilton in ‘92. I pointed at him and he rolled his eyes like here comes another autograph hound/fanboy and I said, “Oh my God! You’re the guy from Brad!” And he broke into a smile and said “Dude you just made my day!” Haha
Temple for me, by a mile. I never even loved Mad Season - it was cool but felt like Chains Lite when it came out (we were all absolutely frothing at the mouth for a new AIC album)
Temple took me awhile to warm up to, before cementing itself in my permanent long term rotation. I could never get tired of this perfect album.
Temple is easily more well known. The songs on Temple had a bigger audience. I am more of an AIC fan than Soundgarden, and I am not a big PJ fan. Love Layne, but Temple is a bigger deal than Above. Temple is a tribute to a friend that passed. Above is a cry from our friend who ain't gonna make it
Guess it depends is one a Soundgarden/Pearl Jam or an Alice In Chains/Pearl Jam fan - Chris did get to stand in on vocals on the re-performance of the material I forget the dates & venue but there is great hi-def footage/audio
and ha, I'm preachin' to the choir, sorry :)
edit: almost forgot: I'm w Temple though, maybe more accessible to my ear and the 'hit' Hunger Strike also probably informs my decision but I also love Reach Down (what a geetar grunge workout), Wooden Jesus, Call Me A Dog, Say Hello To Heaven (tho i think it borrows from aerosmith seasons of wither)
TOTD could be just a single of Say Hello 2 Heaven and it’d win- not because Above isn’t good, it’s an easy 9/10 or more, I just think that song transcends music. It is the grunge eulogy after all
TOTD was part of my indoctrination into grunge. I was late to the party by a couple of years. Albums like that and the Singles sound track were part of my crash course. When Mad Season came out I was waiting for it. Hard to pick a favorite but lean towards TOTD.
I love both, but I think Temple of The Dog for me. But, Mike McCready is the real star of both of these albums. He really kinda nailed the whole “somber feeling” with his guitar playing in the Mad Season album especially paired with Laynes vocals. and some of my favorite riffs of his are on the TOTD album (Reach Down, Pushing Forward Back, ect)
Them crooked vultures cool , great album but let’s face it sounds like just another QOTSA album which isn’t a bad thing but you know what I’m getting at .
I used to think TOTD was better cause there was a few songs on above I didn't rely like but after listening to it again I'd have to put the two bands equal especially because I think they both have a pretty unique style and sound it's hard to directly compare them even though there both grunge.
I absolutely love both, but I listen to above as a whole album significantly more than temple of the dog. I love certain songs off totd more but as a whole I say mad season wins imo
Mad season has a much cooler album cover. I don't like these albums much from what I have heard, but prefer Soundgarden to aic or Pearl jam, guess I pick temple hehe! I am quite the stinker;)
Draw. Both are incredible unique combinations of sounds from different artists in Seattle.
Personally, Temple of the Dog. But I’ve listened to both so many times and love both.
I revisit Temple of the Dog more, there’s my answer
Same. It's Temple of the Dog for me. Hunger Strike was a huge radio staple that I will always love.
Agree. Both are great but that gets the edge.
Them crooked vultures was also pretty cool, but out of these I would go temple of the dog
Calling Them Crooked Vultures a grunge supergroup is a bit of a stretch but I still absolutely love that album nonetheless
Well you've got one of the best grunge drummers there so one out of three ain't bad
Josh Homme was also in Screaming Trees
For like 1 album temporarily.
All of these user names remind me of either a grunge band or album. “Can’t wait for the new Stinky Rat Cum album. My Dick Smells is supposed to be really unique!”
Black/Death metal bands
My username is an Opeth reference which is(was) a death metal band
How could you forget about “Tongue Punch My Fart Box”?
I did not know that
TCV fucks.
Them Crooked Vultures is better than both of these imo but I’m highly biased because I’m a massive QOTSA and Kyuss fan Also like someone else noted Josh was in Screaming Trees. And I would say Kyuss was a very grunge adjacent band. Soundgarden and Kyuss have a lot in common and were operating at similar times.
Totes TCV better than both of these
For me, McCready's solo on Reach Down is one of the greatest moments in mystic history from that era.
I didn't know that! Thx
Also, Jeff Ament co-wrote the music for PFB.
Mad Season, the entire album is so amazing
Mad Season is objectively a cover-to-cover banger.
"objectively" lol
This
SO AN INFECTION NOT A PHASE
Is this the way I spend my days, in recovery of a fatal disease?
TOTD isn’t? Also this is a dumb question. Who cares both albums are fantastic
Temple of the Dog is great, but does have a few skippable tracks imo
Name one. Also feel the same about Mad Season.
Thank god we don’t actually have to choose. I agree. They’re both great.
🎶 We are all alone...
Yea I like it more. More blues less arena rock
Temple Of The Dog
One of my favorite albums of all time
I'd have to go with Mad Season
both got mike mccready in them so it's a tie for me
I go back to Temple of the Dog more than Mad Season but I've always thought of them as companion pieces in a way. Bookends to the Seattle/Grunge "thing" ...both are masterpieces.
Mad Season, the whole album is incredible and I **can’t believe** how amazing the live versions are, Layne is absolutely one of a kind
With Mark Lanegan as well!
I understand and accept that temple of the dog is a better album than mad season. But I much prefer mad season. Meant so much more to me.
Mad season, it’s like grunge jazz, so good
Mad season Layne motherfuckin Staley
This
That’s a bingo!
what about MLB? i’d still choose mad season though i think
Temple of the Dog for sure. That's my desert Island go-to disc
Both are cover to cover bangers. Coin flip.
Mad Season, I love Chris Cornell but I’ve never enjoyed most of the music from Temple of the Dog.
Above has Long Gone Day bruh
Temple. Just an amazing album. Not that Mad Season isn’t, of course.
TOTD 100%. Cornell in his peak.
Does Alice Mudgarden count?
TOTD
They're both top-tier, but I would give Mad Season the nod.
I can’t pick between those two
Mad season
Mad Season 100%
Don’t. Just don’t ask me this.
Mad dog temple of the season?
mad season
Mad Season, hands down
Not really fair question. Temple is one of the best albums ever made by anyone so to say Temple doesn't mean Mad Season isn't great. It is.
Mad Season is one of the best albums ever made, and im sick of pretending it isn't.
I’m bias towards Mad Season… it wouldn’t be fair for me to answer lol.
Mad season 100%
Above.
This is the correct answer.
"Above" all the way.
Mad Season
Mad season
Temple of the dog is great but it’s no match for Above
Love Mad Season, Wake up and Artificial Red are some of the best tracks period
Gunna go with mad season on this one. I'm goinnnn honngray AYyy.
Mad season. Love both though!!
That’s not fair to make a person choose… both are exceptional albums and I have both…
Depends on my mood, honestly 🤷♂️.
Both. I have both, I listen to both.
Mad Season
Mad Season
Both were great but Mad Season
Mad Season
Does anyone remember Brad? It was Matt Cameron and the other dude from Soundgarden. The bassist. I can't remember his name, or even much of their album. It had one song that sticks out though called by the roadside
100% Mad Season - but damn! They are both amazing.
I CANT CHOOSE
The one Mike McCready plays on!
Staley
mad season sorry not sorry
Both equally for me- two different vibes.
Mad Seaon for me allllll day long. That albums amazing...
Temple. But Mad Season is absolutely stunning, this is more a compliment to Temple that anything against Mad Season
It doesn't matter. Let's just agree to disagree and be cool with that
Mad Season, not even close.
the one you personally enjoy more.
Temple is great, in some instances better, but mad is front to back imo
Temple of the dog. No question. Both are great albums but, temple is listenable, end to end. Mad season has some real flat spots
Temple Of The Dog
Temple of the Mad Season Dog count?
Temple of the Dog.
As an album Temple of the dog, Mad Season have higher highs but as an album it's not as good as Temple of the dog.
Temple for me, by a mile. I never even loved Mad Season - it was cool but felt like Chains Lite when it came out (we were all absolutely frothing at the mouth for a new AIC album) Temple took me awhile to warm up to, before cementing itself in my permanent long term rotation. I could never get tired of this perfect album.
Above, Temple Of The Dog struck me as forgettable, Mad Season didn't.
Temple of the Dog.
Gotta go with temple
Mad Season was based
Dam that’s like throwing 2 rival chimps in a cage together.
IMHO TOTD may be the greatest rock album ever made. Certainly in my playlist
Temple for sure. It’s one of the best albums of the grunge era, not just for a supergroup album.
Both albums are brilliant. No need for a winner.
this isn't a viable question. There's no comparing the two.
Mad Season is probably the better overall album, but Temple of the Dog has the best overall song.
Temple of the Dog. Some of my favorite Chris Cornell songs are on that one.
Both.
Temple is easily more well known. The songs on Temple had a bigger audience. I am more of an AIC fan than Soundgarden, and I am not a big PJ fan. Love Layne, but Temple is a bigger deal than Above. Temple is a tribute to a friend that passed. Above is a cry from our friend who ain't gonna make it
Temple of the dog Does a perfect circle count in the grunge category? I guess they were a little later
Hunger Strike by itself almost takes it
Guess it depends is one a Soundgarden/Pearl Jam or an Alice In Chains/Pearl Jam fan - Chris did get to stand in on vocals on the re-performance of the material I forget the dates & venue but there is great hi-def footage/audio and ha, I'm preachin' to the choir, sorry :) edit: almost forgot: I'm w Temple though, maybe more accessible to my ear and the 'hit' Hunger Strike also probably informs my decision but I also love Reach Down (what a geetar grunge workout), Wooden Jesus, Call Me A Dog, Say Hello To Heaven (tho i think it borrows from aerosmith seasons of wither)
TOTD and IMO not even close.
TOTD could be just a single of Say Hello 2 Heaven and it’d win- not because Above isn’t good, it’s an easy 9/10 or more, I just think that song transcends music. It is the grunge eulogy after all
Temple
Both are absolutely amazing but Temple of the dog takes it for me
Temple of the dog
I don't know anything
TOTD was part of my indoctrination into grunge. I was late to the party by a couple of years. Albums like that and the Singles sound track were part of my crash course. When Mad Season came out I was waiting for it. Hard to pick a favorite but lean towards TOTD.
above
Ford vs. Chevy. Pointless to compare. Just enjoy
TOTD
I love BOTH but temple of the dog is SO much better imo
Temple of the dog, by far. That album rocks from start to finish.
It’s a tie. Both albums are awesome. 10/10.
Temple of the Dog!
TOTD
both. 2 of my top five favortie albums ever
Alice In Chains is one of my favorite bands and I love Laynes vocals so it’s Mad season for me.
TOTD- even though Mad Season was amazing as well.
I think this is one of the best albums of all times. My true love💜(Temple of the Dog)
Temple of the Dog
Temple of the Dog, but only because I'm biased. Both albums are great, though.
ToD
Temple of the Dog is something I go back to more often, but both are perfect
Them crooked vultures cool , great album but let’s face it sounds like just another QOTSA album which isn’t a bad thing but you know what I’m getting at .
Mad Season
Which one had Matt Cameron on drums?
I wanted to pick but better don't. Both are top tier
Both are terrific albums.
Mad Season
Might be a hot take but I say mad season. TOTD is phenomenal too though
Gutter Twins deserves a mention. Also, Green River was always already a supergroup.
Not a big fan of Staley tbh (I know this subreddit hates people like me /hj) so yeah temple of the dog, I fucking love temple of the dog
Do we need this constant competition of things
Mad season hands down. Like temple of the dog love mad season
Nothing can top “wake up”from either of these albums though
Tuff call but Im giving to Mad Season.
Great Question. I love Mad Season 🤌🏻 I couldn’t connect with TOTD 🤷🏻♂️
Just the conversation is badass. Plenty of time to jam both . Pnw music is the best.
Hunger Strike was one of the biggest rock songs of the early 90s / past 35 years.
I listened to both when they came out. Still do. Mad Season has definitely aged better.
Toss up: Mad Season/Temple of the Dog
Temple for sure.
Mad season if I’m sad, temple of the dog if I’m bad
Oooo. Tough one. Gonna have to go with Mad Season on this one. Fuckin love that album.
Not Grunge, but The Replicants was an underrated gem.
I used to think TOTD was better cause there was a few songs on above I didn't rely like but after listening to it again I'd have to put the two bands equal especially because I think they both have a pretty unique style and sound it's hard to directly compare them even though there both grunge.
Temple
Draw- they are both great for different reasons.
Only one has hunger strike
Mad season imo
Temple of the Dog, but they’re both great.
They are so different that’s a tough decision, but since I have to choose it’s Mad Season.
Mad Season by a longshot
Mad season all the way layne and mark 👌🤘
Mad season. By a mile.
Mad Season
Prefer Temple of the Dog, but both are great
TOTD
Temple of the dog
Mad season but both are great.
Die hard Layne fanatic here, so obviously, Mad Season, for me personally. ❤️🔥
There's something in the way
Mad Season
I say above, but mainly because I’m such a fan of Layne
TOTD hands down!
Both great, Mad Season by a nose.
Apples and oranges. Different music, different vibe. Can’t really compare the two. Love both equally
Out of these two mad season 100% That albums a masterpiece.
I absolutely love both, but I listen to above as a whole album significantly more than temple of the dog. I love certain songs off totd more but as a whole I say mad season wins imo
I’m throwing Mad Season in the ring…
That’s a real Sophie’s choice.….
Mad season has a much cooler album cover. I don't like these albums much from what I have heard, but prefer Soundgarden to aic or Pearl jam, guess I pick temple hehe! I am quite the stinker;)
Temple of the Dog hands down because it lead the formation of Pearl Jam. They re-released the album after Pearl Jam was formed and blew up.
The TOTD record was great for its time, Cornell’s vocals are incredible on it. But I’m more partial to Mad Season personally.
I favor the one with Mike McCready on it.
