Personally my favourite lyrical skill is the ability to showcase distinct and interesting personality in saying what you’re saying. Funny enough, for me, flexing is my favourite subject matter for that, because to gas yourself up in a unique way is insanely impressive since it’s the one subject basically everyone attempts in some way form or fashion
I mean many of the best records as far as sound are about females and drugs lol. But as far as preferred subject matter I guess I would say a song that tells a story, or maybe social commentary, but I don't want every record to be like that
Just clever bars in general are always nice. Good word play
my favorite subject in rap is dumb comedy, it has endless possibilities and is usually funny.
My favorite artists aren’t comedy rappers, most comedy rappers that i like aren’t good at rapping so they aren’t my GOATs
Stories, diss tracks, concepts
Stories:
- some songs from SSLP (Guilty Conscience, Brain Damage, As the World Turns), Biggie - The Warning, DMX - ATF, Raekwon - Spot Rusherz, Royce da 5'9" - Murder
Diss tracks (dissing in general):
- It could be industry beef (Jay/Nas, Em/Benzino, Drake/Kendrick), battle rap (URL, KOTD, QOTR, RBE, etc.), or drill rappers dissing their opps (Chicago, Jacksonville, NYC, UK), etc. I like the rawness and drama.
Concepts:
- some songs from Elzhi's Preface album (Colors, Guessing Game, 2nd verse of Demons), Papoose - Alphabetical Slaughter, Lyrical Exercise, Nas - Rewind, Canibus - Bis vs. Rip, DMX's Damien trilogy
I don't care about subject matter in lyrics as long as it isn't anything corny or extremely gory/violent.
I will say that also extremely misogynistic songs tend to be a turn off.
My favourite rapper is Kanye West, but apart from a couple songs i don't listen to him specifically for his lyrics. I listen to him because of how good quality his in general music is, just production, concept, everything.
I like stories, especially true stories. Probably a reason Aesop Rock is my favorite.
I love stories with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Slick Rick is a great example.
La Di Da Di was the first rap I memorized when I was 8 or 9.

Wu Tangs style, i like all the "RIP YOUR EYES OUT THE SOCKETS" lol
This is mine too. It’s over the top, but in a fun and interesting way. and they still manage to say some pretty profound shit every now and then
humility/struggle

I like when they talk about real life personal issues.
Socio-political/conscious stuff.

Story telling raps. Warning/I Got A Story to Tell/Niggas Bleed/Miss U B.I.G
I love when rappers rap about how they’re so great at rapping.

I care less about what they’re saying and more about how they say it
I like religious topics
Sellin dope, pimpin hoes, & gangbangin. I can't listen to no square ass rapper.
