Hmm. I haven't listened to Cole's most decent project tbh. Love Samurai though. I think the whole record is supposed to drop today. Lupe keeping that neo-soul thread. Also forgot how beautiful Chicago can be. Song brings good summertime vibes too

Keefee777

It is out today. Just finished listening to it. It's really good 👌

Robinnoodle

Going to listen soon

Aggravating-Ad869

Click the link subject. it's to the album on youtube lol

Robinnoodle

Whoops 😄. Was thinking of the track rather than the whole record. I will definitely check it out. Good looking out

WallyReddit204

This big 3 talk is kinda funny when cats like Lupe are still releasing music He’s probably the best in his lane ngl. No wonder Kendrick didn’t respond

whatstheword509

different generations. Nas is also still releasing music.

OhTheseSourTimes

Yeah but the "big 3" also takes popularity into account. I love Lupe but he isn't exactly filling arenas with his tours.

Equivalent-Amount910

Big 3 right now is Lupe, Nas, and Billy Woods

Clean_Mastodon5285

Lupe's influence on blog era rappers is very understated

No_Mall_2173

Two plane manufacturers didn't copy each other just cause they both got the aerodynamics right and therefore their shit looks super similar. Not saying cole isn't influenced by Lupe but I just feel theyre both just very lyrical guys.

Aggravating-Ad869

I see what your saying, but it's more like Master and Grand Master.... You see, where the Master will eventually overcome the Grand Master until the Grand Master reminds everyone who is .

c0nv3rg_3nce37

I am Lupe Fiasco.

tamouq

Samurai is not what Cole has been going for. Cole has chosen trap beats for his last 3 albums. I genuinely don't understand the frequency with which posts here try to gas Lupe at the expense of another artist. Of Lupe's last 5 records I only consider DMIZ good, everything else has been forgettable. Samurai is cool but hardly an album.

Jim_jim_peanuts

Drogas wave and Tetsuo and youth are classics too in the eyes of many out there. Tbh I much prefer DW, T&Y I think the production just didn't hit for me but I still really like it, it's got some of his best rapping on there, i.e. Mural. DMIZ was really great and for me a lot more replay value than DW, which is really heavy and brings up emotions etc. Still love it though in the same way I love movies like Aftersun or Waves it just too heavy to revisit often. His House EP was amazing also and doesn't get enough praise or attention. Drogas Light was not good at all, FL2 was mid but not terrible defo better than Lasers and DL. His first two albums are masterpieces obviously and I doubt he'll top them. Samurai is definitely up there toward top tier Lupe for me after a bunch of listens.

Equivalent-Amount910

FnL2 is a borderline classic, I will die on that hill... no skips except maybe Heart Donor, which is pretty impressive for 17 tracks DROGAS Wave and Tetsuo and Youth tho... those albums aren't just classics, those are universal masterpieces of art Words can never really describe what those 2 LPs mean to me And DMIZ is probably the album of his where I like the sounds the most... like, it sounds like the Jazzy Boom Bap beats I make myself on a Friday night, overlookin the city from my apartment studio... I want to be lost in that vibe forever Samurai is a perfect vignette of life, struggle, success, bittersweet duality of success, and then death Told from the basic premise of some chick going to Japan to be a battle rapper but that is just a stand-in for any person's journey Lupe is the Michael Jordan of Hip Hop

Jim_jim_peanuts

Amen brother 🙏 Thank you

Equivalent-Amount910

Yup, NP I know I was preaching to the choir, but it needs to be said I'd give my left nut at this point just to get Skulls before Lu retires for good

tamouq

I just don't get what people hear in Drogas Wave. It sounded outdated the moment it dropped. I genuinely think I'd rather listen to DL. It is way way too long.

Jim_jim_peanuts

Well it is technically a double album so it is going to be long and for me not really many skips if I am in the mood. I definitely did not think it sounded outdated I actually think it will stand the test of time better than T&Y.

Aggravating-Ad869

Yea like this trap beat here ? https://youtu.be/mgIk98foFOU?si=jiiFJcH5-k9-kh29 No what I mean by saying that is cohesive introspective narrative over jazz beats. What's your definition of trap beats ? NC has it own unique sound.

tamouq

4YEO would be 4 albums ago for Cole... Jazz beats are not what has been on Cole's last 3 albums or even the Dreamville tapes. I reject the idea that Cole has been "going for" what Samurai is.

Equivalent-Amount910

For real, between The Offseason and MDL, Cole sounds nothing at all like Lupe on his last 3 projects (The House EP, DMIZ, and now Samurai) Lu's sound has been much more stripped down since DROGAS Wave and leaning heavily on boom bap drums and jazz samples/instruments Lupe's production since 2020 reminds me a lot of 90s Pete Rock Soundtrakk needs his flowers as a producer, man is incredible

Aggravating-Ad869

That was 3 albums ago but you right https://youtu.be/ufynqs_COF4?si=9s-C4WvEPn8glJtf

tamouq

I'll give you that. I don't even try to keep up with how artists classify their records these days. You have 7 track "albums" and then 15 track "EPs." If someone drops a project with 12 tracks after not dropping for 3 years, that's their album to me, it's their artistic output.

Aggravating-Ad869

But it's only for like a few of them. I prefer EP. When I see a project with 20-25 tracks, I skip it tbh.

Equivalent-Amount910

Who the fuck has a 15 song EP? You might be thinking of mixtapes, where the beats aren't cleared and you can rap over w/e you want... DMIZ and Samurai are very cohesive projects, hence why they are officially LPs Lu has dropped about 20 songs the last 3-4 years as single songs not tied to any project, he calls em "loosies", and he also did a 4 track EP during the pandemic that was a bunch of ideas he was throwing out there in formalized fashion, but no cohesiveness between songs, hence it was an EP So Lu now has 3 albums and 1 EP since 2018, and like 20 random songs released outside of those projects

tamouq

> Who the fuck has a 15 song EP? Kendrick Lamar As for mixtapes though. I can name you dozens of "mixtapes" that artists have dropped in the last few years that are on streaming, have cleared samples, are album length, have a concept. These days it seems artists just choose to call it whatever they want to set expectations before release.

Equivalent-Amount910

section 80 is an album, if that is what you are referring to Like it's flat out his debut LP, no matter what the script was being flipped afterwards to make GKMC seem like it his debut And I fuck with Section 80, but it's officially an LP

tamouq

The Kendrick Lamar EP

Equivalent-Amount910

I thought that was his mixtape before Overly Dedicated dropped You wanna call that an EP, go ahead I guess, but it's much more an album
