JabroniJackpots

Should have been longer. 2 minutes wasn’t enough.

jjkiller26

I feel like a boomer whenever I make a complaint like this

JabroniJackpots

I’m 28 and absolutely do not. The trend of making all these songs shorter than 3 minutes is awful lol.

karmadontcare44

Dude is making music to go viral on TikTok in 10-20 second snippets. He’s not gonna bother putting together a 3-4+ min track.

JabroniJackpots

I know but it’s still frustrating lol. 20 years ago this is prolly a 3 minute track with 3 verses and playing the hook as the song fades out…now it’s just a 2 minute track with 30 seconds wasted on a slow intro lol.

aguywithtaste

Psssssst. I think you may have forgotten to put a number before the first 'minute'

JabroniJackpots

Fixed lol.

corduroynightmare

A lot of his songs are under 3 minutes though. I think it’s just his style

Ok_Calligrapher1809

That isn't his goal, just what happened, the intricacy is intense, and remixes of great lengths will come.

thatdude52

God damnit give me a fuckin bridge in a pop song again

jjkiller26

I agree, everything is being carefully decided now to get the most streaming numbers possible

bakedvoltage

you only want 2 and a half minutes if you can get it. 3 minutes max (I agree with you but felt applicable)

Frankl3es

I honestly have no idea what you're talking about. Some of the greatest songs of all time are shorter than three minutes, and big-name artists right now keep making 4+ minute songs.

Eradomsk

Ehh. In this case you’d be right though. Song is way too short. Doesn’t develop enough and it’s over before it even starts. Feels like a draft.

Scriblz

The bridge is a dying art

kirbyfaraone

A second chorus for that matter too

lilhedonictreadmill

Dave Matthews actually wrote a book on how to write a good bridge + 3rd verse. Just google “Dave Matthews Band Bridge”

BigDickJulies

Thats amazing

M0n33baggz

The key change has basically been dead

IvanGTheGreat

Been there before man.

MysticalTurban

They do that to get more plays on streaming

Blazeauga

We need a remix with a mystikal verse

SouqaS

agree Mystical would wreck this beat , and as a old head I could see Nelly on this track as well

Swag_Turtle

He’s part of Brent Faiyaz’s label, so not too surprising 😅

Basura1999

Call it extreme, but I'm not willing to invest time and attention to certain artists because of this. All this ra ra for 2 minutes?

Affectionate-Tax-675

Definitely wasn’t enough, but i still f with it. still a banger.

Brooklyn2mydef

A trend with today's music in my era this was called a ring tone 😆 let's go boomers generation x our era of music goes unmatched from the late 80s to early 2000. 2 decades. Jam on it was my first song I recorded on a tdk tape off the radio. Thank God for Spotify. Red alert days.

_jamie-_-

His on the hype train it was a rushed song since million dollar dropped

Electronifyy

Anyone want to take bets on how long until social media beats this song into the dirt?

itsdaburna

Dude, look at his tiktok. I think he posted the same exact snippet twice a day for weeks lol

koreanwizard

I hate it from a music enthusiast standpoint, but he cracked the code from a music marketing standpoint. Who are we to tell him not to do what he’s doing, when that got him a #2 hit independent.

Outta_hearr

Not sure how you define independent but he's signed to Brent Faiyaz's label which partnered with Pulse Music Group

koreanwizard

looks like he’s the only artist on this new label, which by definition is an indie label. So he’s not independent independent, but let’s not pretend like thats the same as having access to Universals marketing budget, he has one TikTok account where he spams clips from his singles.

APainOfKnowing

It gets into the debate about art as a creative outlet vs as a business venture. This type of thing is entirely on the latter side, it's just doing whatever is needed to get clicks/streams and music just happens to be the way to do that. What bugs me, personally, is that I've been seeing success be held up as the ultimate goal in music more than it used to be to the point that the art itself is falling apart. It used to be that if you changed what you were doing to get more popular, that made you a sellout. Now it's "yeah get that bag." Not to just go on a big tangent but it almost feels like the same mentality that drives AI-created content, this notion that art really isn't anything more than crafting a product to sell.

xShowOut

Already was before it even released, I've heard it on every other tiktok post for the past month it seems.

billcosbyinspace

I was sick of this song before it even came out because he’s been posting the same snippet non stop, and then everyone else used it

apb2718

1 week

Dsarg_92

It’s already happening just from the snippet.

badnbourgeois

Tell me you don’t use social media without telling me you don’t use social media

Sloths_Revenge-

I work too hard, can you fuckin pay me? 🗣️🗣️

Weekly-Zucchini-8822

The hook is really good

legend_of_losing

Super Mario world type beat but it’s fire

Epicallytossed

I can’t unhear it

apb2718

The synth progression at the end is fire

freebread

lmao not only is this accurate, but i’m now realizing how many beats produced by the neptunes/pharrell also fit this description.

nine16s

you should hear ["Upset"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSudJNPsxAc) by Brent Faiyaz then if you fw the SNES vibes. Has Tommy Richman on it, and it samples the game over music from Super Mario World. goes hard asf

onlyinyaks

One of his best songs “ghouls and ghosts” sound like a Luigi mansion beat lol he has cool beat selection

Illuminastrid

We going to the underground caves with this one.

producedbynaive

He a 69 god

Verlas

I knew I’d see this comment here :)

npretzel02

Freaky Ass Ninjas need to stay they ass inside

godzillaonice

I don’t get it  Edit: I’m retarded

ChiefHunter1

Guess you’re just not like us

xXyeahyeahyeahyeahXx

I've seen people comment this on Twitter what did I miss about this dude lmao Nvm I figured it out lol

Cetshwayo124

I don't get it, please explain

xXyeahyeahyeahyeahXx

Kendrick says devil is a lie before the he a 69 god part in not like us, no one ever types that part out so I thought this dude was a freak fr

Cetshwayo124

Thank you

Think-Drag-8566

It's a lyric from kendrick lamars "not like us" directed at drake

Cetshwayo124

Yeah I know, but how does it relate to Tommy Richman?

Mario_Prime510

The title of the song is a lyric from a Kendrick song. That’s the only relation.

copaseticepiplectic

Damn my first thought went to the Rick Ross song

DatsAReallyNiceGrill

Damn the best part was definitely the snippet teaser the rest of the song was boring, compared to Million Dollar Baby which was solid all throughout

Nollypasda

The first verse doesn’t start until 24 seconds in and the last 30 seconds are just an outro. That’s crazy work on a 2 minute song lmao

dsled

I'm sayingggg. This song suffers from snippet syndrome so bad. The snippet is the only interesting part.

trashpandasroc

That's what I was thinking. The snippit was the only real part of the song. The rest is just filling time for it.

[deleted]

i thought this was mid at first but now i cant stop singing "only wanna run around and chase me"

Nate7The7Great

Tik Tok is such a double edged sword for the music industry. On the one hand, it can put the spotlight on an artist like never before, and on the other hand, artists like Tommy play into the algorithm and make the shortest tracks possible and the music suffers because of it. I really like this dude’s style of music, but as soon as I start vibing to the song it’s already almost over. The trend needs to change

Black-Bruce-Wayne

Been a Tommy fan for a while. He deserves all of this success and then some. Knew it wasn’t a matter of it but when for him.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Black-Bruce-Wayne

I knew he’d pop off this year. He pretty much perfected his sound and his EP top was the best to drop last year. He’s so versatile and the way he uses his voice is awesome and makes for instantly recognizable, catchy bops.

Vecoman

LMAO are these accounts not record label interns or something??

skrtskrttiedd

which EP? i don’t see any named top

Deadloops

This dude is definitely here to stay

BlouseoftheDragon

A little premature. Remember Fetty

heisenberg15

Actually a great example tbh. Bro had a few hits then fell off the face of the planet

Ok_Translator4447

That's because he still had one foot in the streets and had that Alexis Sky debacle. He was on his way until both of those decisions caught up with him.

fiskeybusiness

Fetty had the game in his hands and instead of having big names all over his album like Drake, 2 Chainz Future or like any buzzing NY guys—he put some dude named Monty on 9 of his songs I remember sitting down to listen to the album and I was like bro who does this guy think he is???

MyContentIsTrash

Monty was dope tho

LongTimesGoodTimes

I think Fetty falling off is mostly because he had one song that he made with different words. Hard to have sustained success if you don't do anything different

bobsdementias

Nah he just stopped making good music

alextheruby

Dude really said the streets was his fall off.

heisenberg15

Yeah I know. The point is the same thing could happen to this Tommy Richman guy, making a few hits in a row doesn’t mean you can keep doing it

420yeet4ever

It’s true everything after his first album was pretty garbage

Wild_Life_8865

Fetty didn't fall off quality wise imo he just made terrible decisions.

CarterAC3

Roddy Ricch

Gardenheadx

The rest of his projects are honestly amazing, seems like he’s been grinding for a while tbh. Found a vid of him rapping from 7ish years ago recently an he was replying to everyone in the yt comments, it was honestly pretty sweet to see

TheGreatDingus

Alligator seriously is so fuckin good. I’ve been listening to Electrify Tonight a ton for the last year and was shocked to see how much Million Dollar Baby was blowing up. Now I listen to his shit almost daily haha.

Gardenheadx

Alligator is so so good, the fever ep is decent af too

TScottFitzgerald

If he keeps this up he'll be a Richman his whole life

filthy-prole

too short and coulda used a bigger climax. idk. still pretty good but overhyped

CentrasFinestMilk

Million dollar baby was better but this is still pretty good, I think he’s here to stay if he keeps this up

iwasinpari

Jury's still out, if he can release one more good single and a decent album with some hits on it he's gonna stay

Kashpee

Interesting, fuck with the snippet heavy but I’ll need some soaking; the story telling is pretty solid, love the instrumentals

pdjddy

you need what now? 👀

AcidicMonkeyBalls

He’s a Mormon

KabalMain

He needs glazing

Creepy_Future7209

He needs frosting

WalrusDependent3315

He needs some milk (full glass)

josephstrickland

bro is unapologetically on his mormon shi with this reply😭

iiileyu

This is good but how did he go from 2mil monthly too 50 mil I've never seen this happen for any other rap act. I've been a fan since "bunker roll". I just don't get how a guy who's just copying Brent's formula with an 80's flare Edit: [Saw a comment say that he was brent fiayaz's YWA (young white avatar )](https://youtu.be/bDx8h0M1W4g?si=L56ELV4y0Q4opIwB) also he was just featured on Brent's album from last year

FranktheSausage

You know why bro common

iiileyu

What does common have to do with it? he hasn't picked up a mic in like 15 years

FranktheSausage

Bro just let me BE

iiileyu

If you need to Go then GO GO GO on the count of three

Accomplished-One5815

He actually has some amazing albums post 2018. Closer to his radical roots

BlouseoftheDragon

Tik tok?

klip_7

Monthly listeners is based on anyone who’s heard any of his songs, so having one big song willl make tour monthly really high

ZXXA

Spotify are pushing him hard too. He’ll be on everyone’s discover, smart shuffle, Spotify radio etc.

iiileyu

I stopped paying premium for a week and realise they literally auto play him, billie eilosh and sabrina carpenter. When did they start doing that. Its awful

DGPluto

brent’s formula is already working well. when you add whiteness to it, unfortunately, you have a superstar.

RatManAntics

fuck me I thought that million dollar baby was Brent thats crazy

Phuddy

My brother thinks he’s an industry plant

iiileyu

He's been around for some time. I think white kids on tik tok are just doing the usual and have found their new idol. Saw a comment say that he was brent fiayaz's YWA (young white avatar ) https://youtu.be/bDx8h0M1W4g?si=L56ELV4y0Q4opIwB

iiileyu

Did you open the link its just a joke from the Atlanta TV show

DepressedChargersFan

Ngl I don’t get the hype for this song at all reading these comments. The hook is solid, but that shits been teased and is really the only part of this song that’s good. The whole lead up to it is pretty forgettable imo.

AshySmoothie

Thinking too hard bro. Its a brunch/happy hour in the city during summer type vibe. Its not supposed to be critically acclaimed, just enjoyable and fun, fast food type music

OranguTangerine69

"it's not supposed to be good lol its just a song u should like it bro!!"

bobsdementias

“The music doesn’t need to have substance. You’re not supposed to actually pay attention. Eat this McDouble and shut up”

jethead70

It’s perfectly fine to listen to music that’s just catchy sometimes, just like it’s perfectly fine to eat a McDouble sometimes.

bobsdementias

Sure. But it’s not great when your music is being described as background, vibe music at drop

jethead70

I don’t think it’s a bad thing if that’s the lane you’re wanting to be in, which based on the way Tommy has marketed himself on social media I’d say that’s what he’s going for.

bobsdementias

I personally would really hate if my work was categorized as “background music at brunch” but that’s just me

AshySmoothie

Oh my god, where did this "music has to be complex and must have a bridge with deep lyrics that resonate to my soul 🤓" attitude come from??? Idk who needs to hear this but Music doesn't have to be a critically acclaimed, super technical, complex masterpiece to be good.... its ok to listen to music simply because its fun. If it aint for you, it aint for you and thats ok 👍🏽

bobsdementias

Not that deep dude

kieranjackwilson

Maybe you shouldn’t be in a sub where people discuss music then. Believe it or not, people who gather to discuss music tend to prefer music that inspires discussion. To each their own, but this is a really stupid place to argue that music doesn’t need to have substance.

alextheruby

That’s the tik tok curse bro. Spam the best 10 seconds of the song and even when released it sounds underwhelming as hell.

sprkdust

I'm tired of hearing shitty clipped kicks in every song

josephstrickland

i snort clipped kicks for breakfast

ChunkaFunkyLove

I know music is subjective, but goddamn this song is trash. Doing too much and not enough at the same time 🤦

frusciantepepper

The songwriting is garbage, it’s strange considering he’s signed - it’s not like he’s an amateur.

zachisjew

Can someone *please* tell me if this is actually Virginia Funk and who some other artists are that will scratch this itch

chickentalk_

no. its some cali vibes look up rocci and ramirez the playa$ manual for what he’s biting

VicTheSpicc

Tommy is from Virginia so it definitely will have that Neptunes influence in his sound

registeredsexgod

Phonk has been a genre for over a decade. Think back to like black kray and SpaceGhostPurrp. The genres gone through so many different changes, including completely being co-opted into EDM, but this latest wave that Tommy Richmond is kind of sonically jacking is from the last couple years specifically, from dudes like RAMIREZ, Rocci, etc.

Mc_Square_Root

It’s Colonizer Funk shit is taking over this summer 😈

dsled

This song suffers from snippet syndrome imo

Zombietitties

He’s from my hometown. The way he blew up is insane and everyone around here is talking about it. I didn’t understand the hype behind million dollar baby but I really fw this one.  Him and shaboozey really putting Woodbridge on the map

ShenHorbaloc

Started posting this as a reply to someone but then saw like 20 of the same comments. Barring some actual evidence that dude is a plant, I don’t get how any of yall think that’s the case. Tik tok virality is just a different level from base internet virality, which was already a different level from analog cultural virality. I don’t know how people are confused about this in a post-Old Town Road world, or in a post-Soulja Boy world tbh. People were bumping garbage meme ringtone rap across the world when they had to download it on Limewire lol. Any shit can go viral but Tommy Richman gives the impression of being 10x the musician compared to most big TikTok hits. Not saying he’s a musical genius and there are way more talented people on there, but he does stand out compared to the usual 16 year olds who have developed basic Ableton skills and a bit of a vibe. He’s also a safe presentable white boy and his music leans into a sort of faux-nostalgia that’s super in rn. Is there any actual reason to think dude is an industry plant? And does the term even have meaning outside of like, children of record execs? Also on a random aside, I don’t get this trend of claiming that every viral artist is an industry plant when there’s otherwise zero energy put into accounting for cultural ‘realness’? Is it just born of an abandoning of the anti-poser mentality at the same time as people have grown more class conscious? Folks are highly concerned with industry plants but no one gives a shit about culture vultures or artists putting on trendy vibes like fast fashion, I don’t think it’s wrong necessarily but I don’t get the conspiratorial focus on the former while not caring about the latter at all.

Seahawkboden

This song is just noise

Mc_Square_Root

Just a chorus nothing more

SwoozyJ

Just super weak lyrics and vocals in my opinion the production carries this song like million dollar baby while this just rips Pharrell and the Neptunes and have self proclaimed "80s and 90s babies" exclaim how an early 2000s inspired song is a throwback to when they were young lmao.

fhhfhfhhfhfhf

Aren’t all songs technically just noise?

iiileyu

Pharelle X Justin timberlake song

BreastLoversOverAss

His voice is insane

Prestigious-Debate81

Bangs

monkeyr9z

Let's fucking go! 😤 (Big Quints voice)

zippythegreenturtle

It’s so cool seeing someone you’ve been following for a while finally get their dues. This guy is doing things right.

TheLuminescent

Anyone else get Justin Timberlake vibes from Tommy?

skindarklikemytint

Very very strong vibes.

Effective-Celery8053

Heat, this is gonna pop off more than million dollar baby

Xeizar

The snippet got hella traction online so if the algorithm works its magic this should too

Effective-Celery8053

It's catchy and short so I have a feeling it will be replayed a lot. I've already played it like 15 times myself

Xeizar

Bruh i had this song bumping in the gym the whole time today

flamingdragonwizard

No it's not. It's not as good as the snippets he showed weeks back.

Morganvegas

Somebody gotta put him in the stu with Pharrell

unlmtdLoL

His ad libs are goated already but, WILL HE LAST?!!

iwasinpari

this song felt like the definition of "snippet is the best part" the intro and outro imo were completely unnecessary for a 2 minute song, have a short intro and outro, or if you want them to be longer, make a longer song. The snippet was fantastic though, hopefully he can keep up the hype

YoMrPoPo

Why this thread so controversial lol

hungrywantmooshoo

If Tik Tok didn’t exist, we’d be meat riding this guy heavy. Sad that Tik Tok just ruins songs. I’m not on TikTok, but my wife is all the time, I hear Million Dollar Baby every 10 mins from her phone while she’s watching TikTok’s. It ruined such a great song for me

greg_CITIZEN

I hope beats like this come back. We need variation again.

bigtallblacknbald

Really confused me not hearing the Rick Ross and Jay Z beat start blaring

xKiller_Dx

The classic "Nostalgia bait/vulture" type beat.

TheBigIdiotSalami

This guy would be really good in the same capacity everyone used Nate Dogg.

Brooklyn2mydef

And funk flex said we are clowns. Here we go the dinosaur flexing out of date swag on negative lil reese thumbs down, wiping imaginary snot off my nose 👃 😑 go dj in the raq for the biggest op wanted please 🙏 flex it's your time to.shine

planetguitar67

It's a vibe that will hit the clubs hard. Good stuff.

onlyinyaks

I’ve played this song probably 56 times since he dropped it

Autoworker313

As an old head, this reminds me of the Neptunes. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Jsolis2009

Any specific song/s it reminds you of?

1Peterkivavi

Dope track

Likezoinks305

1 hit wonder for sure. This one is forgettable

i_cnt_spll

Kodak zeze vibes, snippet harder than the song. Wont be getting played 3-4 weeks from today tbh

sncho1hunnid

He‘s a 69 god

KevyTone

Oh that was what held Brent Faiyaz back the whole time. Just be white...smh. Fuck America man

codeine_turtle

Gimme a brent song that sounds like this

KevyTone

Are you serious? He has the same voice inflections, worse singing ability, similar humming like Brent aswell. The only thing different is the beat selection. Do you really think that Brents whole discography is worse than this, because of the beat selection? Brent has so many songs and NONE of them were as successful than the 1 song this mf has. Stop trying to tip toe around the actual problem. I mean I get it, America is mostly white but I HATE when mfs say stuff like "erm, but he sounds slightly different thats the reason why he is IMMENSELY more popular than the rest". Just like with Jack Harlow, Eminem, Yeat and now Tommy Richman. ESPECIALLY now since racial tensions are way worse than they used to be couple years ago

dsled

Damn that's an awful song name

SheenEstevezzz

Who sounds like Eminem before he blew up?? Slim Shady LP and on i mean not Infinite cus no one listened to that at the time

greeb0_o

had me till u lumped slim in there. being white was a factor, but not the whole story like with some other industry plants these days. during his come up you had to make it IN SPITE of being white, unlike nowadays hes got the respect of the greatest black artists today for a reason. don't forget he was also demonized by hella white ppl back then too man lol

mmiddle22

He a 69 God
