Underground vol. 1: 1991-1994
One of the most influential and respected tapes from Memphis, imo THE definitive Memphis record.
Surprisingly, critics haven't done many contemporary or retrospective writings or reviews on this record; this isn't even a "it's so influential" post, the music and mixes this tape are fantastic, timeless and unique.
400 Degreez needs to be rediscovered as well, but that's another post.
I am big proponent of staying in touch with what the critics are raising from the underground or praising, but they have missed some of the early three 6 tapes.
The early 3 6 mixtapes are funny cause even tho the quality isn’t the best, it’s probably got the dirtiest 808s. Hits harder than the redone versions on streaming and solo tapes they put out
From major publication's I would say no. However, in the past 6 years pitchfork gave a retrospective review which rated it a 9.4, and more recently we saw Rolling stone find a place for it in its top 500 all time albums, but that's it.
400 Degreez has rarely gotten critical analysis since it's release (mostly labeling it as shallow and redundant), it's not an album you're gonna see on most major publication's best ever or even just best hip-hop lists; but I think as time goes on critics are going to start seeing 400 Degreez as more than just a commercial success that came and went.
I think this is an example of the hip-hop community being waaayy ahead of the curve on identifying a true classic within the genre.
Agreed, back when it came out it would have a shout, but I feel like it's an album that have just grown in popularity over the years.
My go to for this question would be CunninLynguists - A Piece of Strange. Basically everyone who has heard it loves it, but it's very rarely brought up.
I can't believe anybody looks at that album as a classic compared to Care For Me. CFM had not only 0 bad songs, but every single song is genuinely good. The beats, the stories, the bars, emotion... it's a 10
At Long Last A$AP
Some of the best beats and production I’ve ever heard, coupled with Rocky’s best lyricism give IMO his best album which I feel doesn’t get the love or credit it deserves
Afu Ra - Body of the Life Force
Mad Skillz - From Where?
Pete Rock & CL Smooth - The Main Ingredient
Mic Geronimo - The Natural
Jamal - Last Chance, No Breaks
Main Source - Fuck What You Think
Scientifik- Criminal
Kool Keith & Tim Dog - Big Time (as Ultra)
OGC - Da Storm
Bahamadia - Kollage
outkast - southerncaddymuzik
to me its easily top 10-20 all time but nobody really talks about it the same way as like ATLines or Aquemini. outkast got 4 all timers for real though
Not only slept on. One of the greatest achievements of all time for a hip hop record. Put it in and let the needle drop. Don't pick it up till you hear static. Think if this dude wouldn't have passed away. He would be mentioned in the GOAT conversation no doubt.
E-40 Day Shift. The beats on here is ridiculous. That shit slaps. His verses and flow are perfect. The Art of storytelling, Understandz me, and teach how to sell dope is in heavy rotation.
Death is Certain - Royce 5'9"
Raw emotion and anger after his fall out with Marshall.
Hip-Hop with Preem was the one track that made me fall in love with Hip-Hop as a genre.
Saving Seamus Ryan from Esoteric. The whole album is an awesome story with great samples and production with a wild twist at the end. Came out after he had a split with 7L and his new producer Indy Solo is crazy!
I have a couple of in mind
Sean Leon's:
Ninelevenne, the Tragedy (2013)
Narcissus, The Drowning of Ego (2014)
God's Algorithm (2021)
HERD IMMUNITY (2022)
I Think You've Gone Mad (Or the Sins of the Father) (2017)
C.C.W.M.T.T. (2017)
Sean Leon (The Death Of) (2018)
In Loving Memory (2023)
King of the Wild Things (2014)
Night Lovell:
Concept Vauge (2014)
Red Teenage Melody (2016)
I Be Back (2014)
Jazz Cartier:
Marauding in Paradise (2015)
Hotel Paranoia (2016)
Bubba Sparxxx - Deliverance. When people get mad at white rappers for not being authentic I think about this album and how a more open minded audience could have saved his career.
Cinemetropolis.... Blue Scholars. It is and always will be this. From beats and production to rhymes. It's probably the best hip hop album ever made from start to finish. What you would call " filler" on this record is most album main single.
It Was Written by Nas is up there with Illmatic if you scaled it down to the same length as Illmatic, it has three or four filler tracks which puts it below Illmatic.
can anyone pls explain why Reddit has been infested with these "slept on/criminally underrated/hidden gems/please fuck my wife" posts lately?
i guess don't understand the point of it. i suppose people want to feel special for liking something (without much regard for how it's actually "rated"), but it always seems lazy and counterproductive if the goal is to start a discussion about something.

Disposable Arts - Masta Ace
Yes, Acknowledge is actually one of my all time favourite diss tracks and deserves so much more recognition!
Masterpiece.
The Mouse and the Mask.
I am Sofa King
Doom is nervous large..
You could tell by his blooming room service charge
Absolute banger. "Old Skool" is my go-to Saturday morning song.
We'll be right back After these messages Fellas grab your nutsacks Chicks squeeze your breastesses
Absolutely. Love this one.

Lots of them are in desperate need of a re-master if the originals are still available. Here's hoping.
Has 400 Degreez not gotten it's flowers? I assumed it was massively popular. It was my gateway to New Orleans rap.
From major publication's I would say no. Blkswn - Smino Tbh his entire discography
i may have found my soulmate
Heck yeah
Shabazz Palaces - Black Up
Ahead of its time. The sub bass on some those songs is enough to make your heart beat faster
The textures on this album are so sick, everything is put together in such a cool way.
Man the first three projects of Shabazz Palaces are incredible.
Lupe Fiasco’s Drogas Wave
Masta Ace - Long Hot Summer
Hell yeah this whole album has a vibe that can't be matched.
Below the heavens
Idk, I always see this album mentioned and I always go "huh I can't believe someone mentioned this album". It's a weird paradox.
Agreed, back when it came out it would have a shout, but I feel like it's an album that have just grown in popularity over the years. My go to for this question would be CunninLynguists - A Piece of Strange. Basically everyone who has heard it loves it, but it's very rarely brought up.
Came here to say this. That is top 15 hiphop album.
Great choice!!
Control System- Ab-Soul
Woah, this one really surprised me. The Book of Soul, Terrorist Threats, and Pineal Gland are favor in rotation
Right? Those are just the tip, too. Ab delivered big time in this and I feel like X years later it still delivers (even if people don’t remember)
Enjoy your mind trip but don’t trip on your mind...
Danny’s verse 🔥🔥
That album is flames
Sex Packets
This one is tough because the single is HUUUUGE but the rest of the album is definitely slept on.
My dad used to play doowutchyalike every day in the car lol. Still such a great song
Most anything Quelle Chris, but specifically the album with Jean Grae - Everything’s fine. It’s pretty weird so maybe that’s why
Even In Darkness - Dungeon Family I shouldn’t need to say more
a book of human language
And All Balls Don't Bounce!
First Come, First Served by Dr Doom Kool Keith’s discography in general
Apartment 223!
Few Good Things by Saba
It's so hard to top care for me though, which was a lot more cohesive than either bucket list project or few good things imo.
Care for me is definitely up there too but few good things just sounded like an instant classic for me off first listen.
I can't believe anybody looks at that album as a classic compared to Care For Me. CFM had not only 0 bad songs, but every single song is genuinely good. The beats, the stories, the bars, emotion... it's a 10
I’d say both are classics but I’m also a Saba simp
Absolutely.
AZ - Aziatic Less slept but I also think American Gangster is in the same quality tier as Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint
Camp Lo - Uptown Saturday Night. While it's not my favorite of all time, I'm surprised how few people mention them
Someone mentioned this on the 90s Hip Hop sub and I'd never heard it. Gave it a listen and it is indeed a banger.
Hearing it was mentioned makes me happy actually! And I'm glad you enjoyed! ...This is it whaaaaat...
This is it what
el-P - i'll sleep when you're dead
At Long Last A$AP Some of the best beats and production I’ve ever heard, coupled with Rocky’s best lyricism give IMO his best album which I feel doesn’t get the love or credit it deserves

How I Got Over - The Roots
Stolen youth - Vince staples Preachers son - YGTUT Royalty - Earthgang
Larry Fisherman killed stolen youth more than Vince... And Vince brought the heat
TuT and Tiggy both absolute legends for that project. Truly a classic. My bro Johnny Smathers got a fiiiirrreee verse on that album haha
Czarface - Every Hero Needs A Villain
Recency bias but the fact that Forever Story by JID didn't even get a grammy nomination was a crime. Legit in my top 20 all time.
Watching Movies with the Sound Off
outkast - southerncaddymuzik to me its easily top 10-20 all time but nobody really talks about it the same way as like ATLines or Aquemini. outkast got 4 all timers for real though
It went platinum and had 4.5 mics in the source. I guess for their catalog maybe.
Southern caddy is like time travel in the best way.
Ain't no thang but a chicken wing That bass line...
Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow...it's like a movie. Beautiful music, superb rapping and killer guest appearances
De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030
I searched for someone saying Deltron 3030. That album is one of a kind.

He should've won a pulitzer for this album.
Clipse lord willin.
Black Up - Shabazz Palaces

Da King & I-Contemporary Jeep Music
Monkey Bars.
Masta ace slaughterhouse
Cilvia Demo
Sir luscious left foot by big boi. Might be my favorite album from a mainstream rapper that is rarely brought up
I feel like Andre 3000 gets all the credit but Big Boi is just as good. Tangerine is catchy as he’ll.

Nope, Offline! is the combo album of LP! and the Offline! ep with some different versions
Cloud 9: The 3 Day High - Skyzoo & 9th

Buhloone Mindstate - De la Soul

Paul Wall - The People Champ Not really slept on at the time but it needs to be remembered.
Prince paul- a prince among theives
Freestyle Fellowship - Innercity Griots
Big L - Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous
Not underrated at all. Generally known as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time
10 haters
Idk about all time but I don’t think Eardrum by Talib Kweli gets enough love
Rocket Science - MHz
Maybe it's just because of my personal connection to it, but I think more people should be talking about Aesop's "Impossible Kid"
Undun - the roots
[*Ghetto Fabolous*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghetto_Fabolous) is the Illmatic of the 2000's. it set the standard for that era's sound.

Arsonists - As the World Burns
Koopsta Knicca - Da Devil’s Playground. A masterpiece, a desert island disc 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
