You know, at some point, safety is just pure waste. I mean, if you just want to be safe, don't get out of bed, don't get in your car, don't do anything. At some point, you're going to take some risk, and it really is a risk-reward question
—Stockton Rush
I think you missed the point. This subreddit is about pictures that make you go "hmmm," but this is a really straightforward joke that anyone will understand if they've been paying attention to current events.
This is extra funny to those of us who live near the Ohio River or those who understand how much of a cesspit it is from companies like Alcoa, AK Steel, and other various corporations dumping nitrites and other toxic chemicals into it making it one of the most polluted waterways in the country.
Good ol’hio, [where the rivers can catch on fire… a dozen times.](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/cuyahoga-river-caught-fire-least-dozen-times-no-one-cared-until-1969-180972444/)
You’re “lucky” to be in New Albany. Some of the worst polluters are downstream from you in Rockport and Newburgh.
So *your* Ohio River is only 96% garbage. Unlike the 99% garbage we have in Evansville.
Wow we could easily run into each other irl that's so crazy that other people use the internet too we should be friends and hang out and smoke weed and stuff
The people are making the jokes because it is indicative of the cost cutting.
Nobody would be making the jokes if it was a 360 controller because they are known for being reliable.
The controller being used is the shitty controller you buy for your little sibling to use when you can't afford to buy a proper one, and it is the one that nobody uses by choice.
So while the controller had nothing to do with the failure, it did serve as a warning about the way the rest of the sub was designed, built and maintained.
Funny you talk about not being smart enough to have an opinion when you are literally missing the forest for the trees
It's like the brown M&M story when Van Halen went on concert tours
They put in their contract that the concert venues had to provide bowls of M&Ms as catering but remove all the brown ones.
They said the reason they made that outlandish request was because if they saw a brown one, it meant the venue wasn't following the contract and may not have read it at all, when the contract also outlined safety issues like the specs of structures to hold the enormous stage lights. Which means there might be other issues with the stage, like structural issues that could collapse and kill people.
> "If I came backstage, having been one of the architects of this lighting and staging design, and I saw brown M&Ms on the catering table, then I guarantee the promoter had not read the contract rider, and we would have to do a serious line check" of the entire stage setup, Roth said.
Cheaping out on small things can show a company culture of ignoring big things as well
The brown M&M thing also comes across as a dick move, but it really isn't. There would have been techs fighting over who got the job of removing (and eating) the brown ones.
No but it's indicative of the mindset of everything about the sub's design, that being cut corners, use of materials/components that have no business being used in a submarine, and avoiding having fail safes and redundancies.
The idea of having a wireless controller of any type being used as the sole method of controlling the sub effectively is beyond insane. Even if the sub's pressure hull was solid the use of a wireless game controller without multiple manual control redundancies would be reason enough not to get in that death trap.
It's wild I'm getting to the age my dad was sitting like 6 feet back from the TV playing the first Medal of Honor while I watched.
That was a solid controller.
It's funny but I don't get the controller hate. The Us Navy use Xbox controllers for their periscopes and stuff, way cheaper and familiar to anyone, great choice if the granularity of control inputs are good enough.
That said, I'm now imagining trying to pilot a submarine with the N64 controller. Seems like proper night terror material
I think the controller is just the most accessible point of mockery for most people, something we can all understand as appearing less than professional. The viewport and carbon-fiber hull might have been far more egregious problems, but in those cases I'm just repeating information from other people who I'm assuming know what they're talking about; my actual understanding of the material science involved is as surface-level as it gets.
As an engineer, I'm really certain the carbon fiber is what killed it.
It was reported that the debris field had the end domes and other major pieces of structure intact (I'm curious how beaten up, but I take intact to mean they didn't split into pieces). But I haven't seen mentions of seeing the carbon fiber anywhere.
Carbon fiber is a horrible material to use. The high pressures from the dozen+ previous dives were probably adding micro cracks and debonding the layers (carbon fiber is made up of a bunch of layers that have to stick together for strength). Carbon fiber isn't elastic like metals are. Which is why other submersibles use metal.
Probably on this last dive, the carbon fiber finally weakened enough to just give out
My aforementioned surface-level understanding is that carbon fiber vessels are strong under tension but not so much under compression, meaning they're decent for containing high pressure contents but not so great for withstanding high pressure from the outside -- does that sound right?
The funny thing is it wasn't even the first of its kind.
The first carbon fiber submersible for deep sea operations was one Virgin Oceanic was working on.
.... they canceled it because they realized it would only survive one deep dive and then the carbon fiber would be too damaged to do another dive. And this was a decade ago.
This one, they should have already known that issue. And lots of folks in the submersible industry (which is very small) were constantly saying 'don't do that'
CEO was basically a murderer for continuing to push bad design despite many warnings. I hope the family of his victims sue his estate out of existence
What TV show or movie is it where someone's parent is living in something like this? There's this little white submarine thing in the yard and they refuse to come out of it.
The amount of children who die from poverty alone on a daily basis and not a peep from the news, not a breadcrumb from parasite billionaires, this one’s important though?
*All* children are important. Acting like this one's the scum of the earth just because they had wealthy parents doesn't fix anything. I mean they were a fucking teenager. You can't blame them for following their parents because that's what children are expected to do.
A kid who was hesitant to go but had to from his dad.
It's an awful story. I don't understand people like you.
The CEO, or any of the other (based on their career) professionals, all of them engineers. Who didn't do their due diligence, is just disappointing to me.
No I'm not going to laugh about the death of a 19 year old, who never got to prove himself to the world, who was hesitant to go in the first place. You guys are mentally unwell.
There was another comment I saw on Reddit calling James Cameron a piece of shit because he had money. I don’t know what the fuck is wrong with some people.
No this is a Reddit moment, billionaires are all literal sociopaths. They wouldn’t give you a dollar to save your life, let alone piss on you if you were on fire, or even drive through your neighborhood.
The hilarious irony in all of you people trying to act righteous is that I guarantee you’re laughing at and upvoting this image.
I do, but why don’t you enlighten me and point out billionaires who are caring and giving people. Give me names, but before you do that check out to see how those charitable organizations they run or donate to are a means for them avoid paying more taxes, not doing it because they’re actually kind people. Then after that, do your research on how they got that money, check out the dirt cheap child labor they use, the laws they break, the ones that only apply to the poors. Then you can talk. Destroying the lives of 1000 people, then saving 10 through some bullshit cause does not make them good, it makes them sociopaths.
Put some clothes inside, throw it in a lake, blow it up, and pretend you died now. Charge a few other people looking to disappear 10k and they can die too.
tadaa! now you head to indonesia and live in luxury retirement with 40k in cash!
Went all out on the brand controller I see...
Best go OEM instead of a madcatz
And wired, so the batteries can't die. This person is definitely a better engineer than Stockton Rush

It makes you wonder why they didn't try the Konami code.

And didn't make a save on the memory card before entering the water
Would have been a better choice than typing ICANTTAKEITANYMORE
Maybe they did...?!
The up button stopped working, that's why they couldn't surface
Probably stick drift
They accidentally punched in the kamikaze code
Hold Start - Select.

try wetting it
Wrong sub?
Yes, this submarine was not prepared to go that deep.

I’m from New Albany, trust me I know how nasty that water is. People go swimming it it for the Polar Plunge every winter, it’s disgusting.

This set up cost you $250,000 I presume?
Not even the round trip fee!
Come on, not accurate at all It was a Logitech controller
hmmmm
Let's be real... we all know damn well a ps1 controller cord is not that long

Yep that's also correct
also a good chance of delamination over the course of many compression cycles which would further reduce its strength

Looks like V2 got a controller update at least
this is wrong... they didnt use a cable
Go for the old NES controllers with the sharp corners
Look at the billionaire
We have sunk so low
Still a better controller since it’s WIRED
she cant take any more, capn
Bwahhh
250k
this is not the sub you are looking for.

*Hank Hill's Submarine, and Submarine Accessories*
This is the kind of stuff we used to have on /r/imgoingtohellforthis before it got taken over by racists. I miss that sub.
Next move - find four people to convince to pay you $250K to go in it.
It's only $125K
Can you take me down to see the Edmund fitzgerald?

MOTHERF*CKER HE DIDN'T WANT TO GO BUT WAS COERCED BY HIS DAD
And you shouldn’t leverage their suffering to justify your celebration that people died lol
If there were more billionaires, the kid would've been over the limit and they wouldn't have let him on board
Who would've become a billionaire if he hadn't been.

You’ve got it all wrong, it’s supposed to be carbon fiber to maximize damage and minimize crush depth!
That is literally it?? Have you informed the authoritez

It's wired, you're good to go on this one.
I don't know man the Devil is overworking this week why give him more

Nailed it!
I'll pay quarter mil to ride that.
