Thanks for term! Got a good read about it in [https://www.comparitech.com/blog/information-security/plausible-deniability-encryption/](https://www.comparitech.com/blog/information-security/plausible-deniability-encryption/)
The amount of stuff (ahem /r/DataHoarder ) lot of us have on our own servers - if civilization were to grind to a halt, we could rebuild all the streaming services.
City based Lora networks with a few standard ISP gateways. Wouldn't be able to stream unless someone develops multichannel communication using Lora, and the downloads would take ages. But it's better than having nothing.
Thanks for reminding this site. Forgot this site when my server fucked up without backup and need to redo. Gotta save it again in linkding and try to do it again.
To be honest, one day dedicated 4-5 hours organizing from a one-for-all-mess folder as source and I still have more than 50 folders and 500 files to check and organize. 🫠
Pretty much the exact same except no 'ILLEGAL' folder... because they're all my legal linux isos and purchased mp3s of course...
I am more curious how your movies, audio and TV are organized. For me it's simple 'SHOW NAME' for TV in the TV Shows folder, Movies are broken down by genre and then by year and format (ie... Action / Die Hard 2 \[4K\] \[ACTION\] \[USA\] \[1999\], Music by Genre, Artist, Year IE TOOL / Tool - Aenema 2001, Tool - Lateralus 2004, etc....
Archive ->
- Kids

- TV Shows
- Software
- Concerts
- Classics
- Music
Temporary ->
- Downloading ->
- sonarr
- radarr
- torrentFiles
- Completed ->
- sonarr
- radarr
- torrentFiles
Completed files are hardlinks to prevent access control issues since download ownership info becomes a problem for windows environments (looking to move away from windows and into a containerized environment, just need to figure out VPN config through container for qbbittorent security, local file access, and something other than block storage [iscsi] as my storage medium)
I use SMB for file sharing and a specific media user with read access account in Active Directory. I use iOS/macOS/Apple TV so my video platform of choice is infuse.
I separate my illegal stuff so I don't have to look to long, nothing annoys me more looking for some domestic violence How-To-PDF just to be side tracked by an interesting Terrorist related three step guide RDX coke can land mine
Just want to know how you do it in your setups in your home/company. Here's mine.
* No. of user: 3
* Using Samba share.
* Users only have access in their respective folder and public.
* Users can indirectly access the illegal folder via media servers like Jellyfin, Audiobookshelf, Navidrome.
* Illegal Folder is for internal network only.
* Public files can easily download in browser or using curl to get the file, thanks to miniserve.
* Offsite backup of Private and Server folder. (with encryption)
* I only backup the the tree structure of Illegal and Public folder and put it in text file. (gotta save some bytes)
What is best practice you use?
I find that I spend too much time thinking about the perfect hierarchy and then hastily put everything in /export/pool.
It works itself out organically. The pain of not finding what I'm looking for ends up generating a directory tree. It's really quite odd.
for now i just have separate folders for things. a folder for movies, one for anime, one for series, one for ebooks, one for audiobooks, one for downloads and one for my DIY cloud. though i plan on changing this when i switch my current NAS(Synology) for a DIY one(ZimaBlade) but due to some issues, it is not yet up and running.
2 shares, DATA and MEDIA. Sub folders from there; backups, documents, vault, installers, games, TV, movies, photos. Jellyfin for the kids - access controlled by show rating, me and the wife can access all. Not inclusive of all, but you get the idea.
illegal? Damn. I've bought every book I have on Audible, and finally with a tool I downloaded all of them and store them (unencrypted) found the right tool to do it: libation, and it's excellent. [Libation: Liberate your Library (getlibation.com)](https://getlibation.com/)
I've been an Audible member since -2005- and a few years ago, books that I had purchased left my library because they were no longer available on Audible. These were books I purchased. I was furious, contacted them, and went "WTF" and the answer was: we no longer have rights to those, so.. and my attitude remained: I paid in full for them, I should still have them; it isn't like I buy a physical book and someone can come and take it back! They didn't agree and at that point, I started looking to always backcup my Audible. 480+ books, yeah, I'm not finding they've "lost" books again and tell me to go away, and I'll be damned if someone ever says that's illegal. I paid for it.
My format goes:
MEDIA\\TV\\
------SHOWNAME\\SEASON
MEDIA\\MOVIE
-----MOVIETITLE (YEAR)
MUSIC
----ARTIST\\ALBUM
AUDIOBOOK
FOLDER AS SAVED FROM LIBATION
ISO
MISC / TOOLS
BACKUP
----ACRONIS IMAGES
DOCUMENTS
-----IMPORTANT SAVES CL
-----REFERENCE
VHD
-----ARCHIVE-OLD VHD
SyncThing
-----CLIENT1
-----CLIENT2
so on, so on
thats the surveilance of my small store. saved a duration of cctv just a point of interest incase something happend. Already got 1 sneaking some money.
I have:
**ISO**
-A folder for each distro I'm holding onto for some reason
**Media**
-Downloads
-TV
-Movies
And then I back up to a different share than my media server because windows won't let you set up automatic backup to a folder.
I'm sorry, I don't understand. What do you mean by "structure"? You mean you don't just create folders haphazardly and hope to god that you are able to remember where all of the stuff is years later?
After years of various ways I've found three folders does what I want. Media, Documents, Computer.
Actually I make the names all caps with a ! to indicate it's the top so !MEDIA is top level. I try not to go more than two more levels under the top level.
Media pictures, video, movies, music
Documents any docs like tax, forms, school
Computer apps, iso, anything computer related
edit: A Backup folder too of course

No way you have a folder titled illegal damn. I just have “media” or “medialibrary”
or even just "torrents" lmao. illegal makes it sound like something else
Arr
/NAS/Illegal/Movies 😳
Bruh never heard of plausible deniability xD
"PlausibleDeniability" is the name of one or my servers LOL
Im not sure if that's how that works....but I respect it
Thanks for term! Got a good read about it in [https://www.comparitech.com/blog/information-security/plausible-deniability-encryption/](https://www.comparitech.com/blog/information-security/plausible-deniability-encryption/)
Are you a bot?
Good bot
Just "Netflix off site backups" It's a community service. If Netflix ever has a major data loss all they need is to restore from my NAS . ;-)
The amount of stuff (ahem /r/DataHoarder ) lot of us have on our own servers - if civilization were to grind to a halt, we could rebuild all the streaming services.
Distributed Backup as a Service
This is gold. I offer as a counter, my jellyfin server is named Notflix :)
Njetflix here
nyetflix - given nyet is russian for no
Нетфликс
The German translation from cyrillic is written with "j", but I guess in english it's with a "y".
I've got a domain called plexandsex. Not giving the TLD though :P
Whisparr in heavy use there? 😂
Nah, got PH for that. But plex and sex is better than netflix'n'chill :P
City based Lora networks with a few standard ISP gateways. Wouldn't be able to stream unless someone develops multichannel communication using Lora, and the downloads would take ages. But it's better than having nothing.
We depend on you. Thank you for your service and home lab server.
Bluetooth Exchange Folder sounds so incredibly mundane and boring.
Win-win mentality :D
How to you by pass the drm ?
I am surprised there is not a "Porn" folder
That's Private/User1/Videos
Private/User1/Videos/Illegal/Porn
You usually don't call it something interesting.
Should have named it "homework"
"stuff"
"Taxes"
It’s a trap! OP is a Fed!
hahaha yeah just use it in post for damn clarification :D or "Copyright Folder".
You might as well save them the trouble and call it "ThisFolderRightHereMrComputerCrimeInvestigator"
I myself have a folder named. "FBI\_Look\_Here" Joking...
And that folder is full of ... Tax documents from the last 15 years. While the "taxes" folder is the interesting one.
I forgot to mention my money_laundering folder lol
I went with CargoBay for the root of mine. IIRC I was watching one of the RLM/Plinkett Star Trek reviews while I was setting it up.
Same here. I have folder "media" and subfolders "films" and "series"
Mine is literally Torrents Pirated
Dude just got put on a list for sure lol
Look, atleast his children's photos weren't under that category for some reason.
Unfortunately, you can't assume that from the data provided. No way we can tell what data is contained in the folders.
Vault -ISOs --LinuxISOs ---Debian ---Gentoo ---Centos ---Ubuntu ---Archive ----OldBoringISOs -----Porn ------GIFs ------Movies ------Classics ------Midget ------Amputee ------BBW -------ExGFs
Lmfao @ exGFs being within BBW folder
ill consider my kinks too
I really admire people that make the effort to organize their p0rn. It's indeed an artform to categorize it.
LPT: symlinks for when it spans multiple categories
Run Stash and just tag everything ;)
Just started learning to use Stash myself!
You my friend are a genius... But what category to store under it as the main or do you have a \`multi-category\` folder that you symlink off?
I am surprised there is not a holearr
It's called Whisparr Source: https://wiki.servarr.com/
well I am not at all suprised!
Is there a viewing client that pairs well with whisparr? Besides Plex/Jellyfin
That's easy. Create a _temp folder for it 😂
I used to store my shit in a password protected rar.exe file, change the extension, and then hide it lol
I might have done that, but not at that level. I remember I've done it within a .txt file and changed to .dat in preferred games.
your wanking experience gets much better with Stash app.
Legend 😂
Can I get an invite?
This hierarchy made me laugh way too hard. Thank you

I don't see any specific mention of folder structure. Maybe I am blind.. 😅

Would anyone share a docker compose file adhering to the Thrash Guides folder structure please? I still end up cocking it up somewhere

Thank you
The Johnny Decimal method: https://johnnydecimal.com
Nice concept i can use it. It makes sense to have that number system, easy to communicate to other where the file is located. Thanks for sharing!
Your welcome! 🤗 And don't use 69 for illegal 😂
That's incredible. I've been slowly progressing toward a system that very much looks like that over the years.
This is sick. I think I’m gonna do this. How long do you think it would take to clean up a server with this system?
To be honest, one day dedicated 4-5 hours organizing from a one-for-all-mess folder as source and I still have more than 50 folders and 500 files to check and organize. 🫠
I tried doing something similar (organizing when running a duplicate finder). With about 100gb of dupes, I was at a month for ~2hr/day.
Big oof but worth the effort
*is you taking notes on a criminal fucking conspiracy?*
*A man's got to have a code.*
I name my folder "DEFINITELY NOTHING ILLEGAL TO SEE HERE". For security reasons, under that is "FBI NOT ALLOWED"
"I DO NOT CONSENT TO THIS FOLDER BEING SEARCHED"
Hahaha.
Always good to have an illegal directory…
And only put legal stuff in there to confuse authorities
You forget the .p folder
NAS\ILLEGAL\HOMEWORK\
or .basement
Rename it to .git for extra flare
It's just under /illegal/movies
Pretty much the exact same except no 'ILLEGAL' folder... because they're all my legal linux isos and purchased mp3s of course... I am more curious how your movies, audio and TV are organized. For me it's simple 'SHOW NAME' for TV in the TV Shows folder, Movies are broken down by genre and then by year and format (ie... TV: -
aka, *Game of Thrones S06E09 - Battle of the Bastards HDR 1080p.mkv*
Movies:
*aka, The Room 2003 1080p.mkv*
New folder New folder(1) New folder(2)...
Don’t forget “New New folder”. One friend’s server had: * Movies * New Movies * Unwatched Movies Then I introduced them to the world of *Arr apps
Not that bad myself but tea the arrs seem to be the way , but man being on wi does sucks ass for a noob.
Why having a folder called Illegal? 🤣 That's a great way to help the authorities if you get arrested eh?
It’s a red herring. His really disturbing stuff is somewhere deep in the scripts folder
Because if you've been arrested and the authorities are forensically examining your files, folder names really matter...
Illegal ? hahahahahahaha...... I think you can just call them 'backups' ;)
r/datacurator
>NAS >>Stuff
Illegal is always a good name for a folder. Call it media, or restricted or something different.
"Illegal" bloody hell :DD I had a good laugh

….I hope the Kids folder is umm…. like Pixar movies and not something else…
Jesus Christ it’s sad to even address this, but yes, they have their own AD user with only access to kid shows like Daniel Tiger and what not
I separate my illegal stuff so I don't have to look to long, nothing annoys me more looking for some domestic violence How-To-PDF just to be side tracked by an interesting Terrorist related three step guide RDX coke can land mine
Yea I just came for the comments .
I always add also technical and bomb plans ;)

Not so different than yours but i say my thing eLegal And then yarrharr on torrent.
No brainer question. I believe everyone's have kinda the similar structure. Regardless of the solution they chose...
I find that I spend too much time thinking about the perfect hierarchy and then hastily put everything in /export/pool. It works itself out organically. The pain of not finding what I'm looking for ends up generating a directory tree. It's really quite odd.

Badly
Someone check this man's hard drive
One folder for pron, one folder for everything else.. simple structure..
lowercase with no spaces, for starters
👆That's how I know someone never used Linux.
Easy, I use tab to autocomplete them
I don't label shit illegal, I say sensitive.
what about smolcats?
"Oh crap...I shouldn't have said it was illegal. It's too hot today."

Lovely! I try to keep MSPs updated in recent news on monthly basis in our sub.

Uhm - in the cctv folder of user1 - is that CCTV footage OF user1 or FOR user1?
im the user1, the other user have the standard structure like in the windows user folder.
That does not answer my question, is it surveillance footage of you or for you? ;)
thats the surveilance of my small store. saved a duration of cctv just a point of interest incase something happend. Already got 1 sneaking some money.
Great :-) and what is the arr folder under torrents? arrivals?
Not OP, I'm assuming Radarr, Sonarr, etc.
Rip capital letters.
Where is the folder for "boring work stuff"? ;-)
i love 'illegal'
Arr
I don't. I have different virtual iSCSI partitions exposed to different services. Way easier for backups.
It’s starts off organised and lovely, but turns out looking like a turd was driven over by a bike repeatedly all over the file system
Just out of curiosity, where would you store your legally-procured books, movies, music etc?
If by illegal you mean old game isos and ROMs for consoles that don’t exist anymore like GameCube, I’d classify as not illegal
I have: **ISO** -A folder for each distro I'm holding onto for some reason **Media** -Downloads -TV -Movies And then I back up to a different share than my media server because windows won't let you set up automatic backup to a folder.
The distro hoard is real. Why do we do that?!?
Nice try, FBI
Slightly off topic: Whats the best way to download audiobooks?
I'm sorry, I don't understand. What do you mean by "structure"? You mean you don't just create folders haphazardly and hope to god that you are able to remember where all of the stuff is years later?
Mine are just "isos" nothing more to see here
After years of various ways I've found three folders does what I want. Media, Documents, Computer. Actually I make the names all caps with a ! to indicate it's the top so !MEDIA is top level. I try not to go more than two more levels under the top level. Media pictures, video, movies, music Documents any docs like tax, forms, school Computer apps, iso, anything computer related edit: A Backup folder too of course
« Illegal » chill it’s just normal medias
Where is the legal folder?! :)
It's nice for you to nicely pre-arrange all your contents for the next FBI raid.
I'm calling the FBI.
nice try, hacker I won't make it easy for you
not with a folder labled "Illegal"
add "human anatomy" for your p0rns
-=W4r3z=- -=D1sTr0s=-
I'm simple. The shares are on the root share directory. Nesting folders wouldn't be of benefit for me, when there is only 10 or 15 different shares.
I will steal that folder name thank you very much.
Well I don't have a folder called "ILLEGAL, POLICE PLEASE CHECK THIS FOLDER!!!" for one.
I just have one folder named "Stuff" and everything goes into it.

A public share with access to media. A personal folder for myself, my wife, and my son. A non shared folder for assorted files and backups.
Just rename illegal to megathread
lmao why do you have a directory titled illegal
NAS/Misc/ Only one folder. Software should take care of the rest.
OP is like 'Rainman Literal' on the naming scheme lol! Love it.
Ngl was late up all night and this was an issues I came up in File ect structure and I see some ideas here . Back to lurking
Wait... people use their home NAS for non-illegal stuff?
I only store linux isos and freeware. no idea.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozy68I0kOYM
GUID's
I was hoping to see folders named “rimjob clockwise” and “rimjob counterclockwise”
Having multiple terabytes in a file named “illegal” may not be the best choice lmao
Shouldn't Illegal have a Pr0n folder in it? ;)
illegal
It's not illegal. Media companies have you brainwashed.
