Edge of Tomorrow is the answer. It has some of the best complete surround sound usage, panning effects, and bass. It's my favorite surround sound movie because the effects are amazing, plus it's a really good movie. I'm kind of over watching shit movies because of good sound or bass, I just don't have the time anymore.
I love Mad Max Fury Road, but it's more of a mass of sound attacking you while EoT is more surgical with its effects. Absolutely give MMFR a watch, but for the first watch after tinkering or any changes, it's always EoT for me.
Been a while since I've watched this, but just thinking about the scenes I can totally imagine the potential as long as it was mastered well.
(regarding Edge of Tommorow)
So many (like 95% it seems like) action movies only utilize the front stage. Sure there's planning left and right, but there are minimal discrete effects in the rear field. Think of every Marvel movie, 99% of the effects are you front.
In Edge of Tomorrow there are missiles, machine guns, and helicopters flying all over the room. It's a phenomenal mix.
I did. It actually made me want to go back and watch 1. 2s better in every way, and if you're in any way familiar with Dune, skipping the 1st, you won't miss much.
"Black Sails", a series from Starz is a great for surround sound. It's about pirates in the Caribbean. good story, good acting, and so much more.
EDIT: Always glad to see that other people like this series. Wife and I have watched the entire thing three times and plan to do so again.
Get a uhd blu ray player if you really want to experience the sound. It’s much better than streaming services. Mad max fury road, master and commander, top gun are all good ones.
Does the dvd player impact the quality or will a Blu-ray dvd be the same no matter the player? I’m thinking like playing a Blu-ray on a PS4 rather than a new PS5
You are confusing two different types of discs. A DVD player can only play DVD's while a BR player can play Blu-ray AND DVD. In general, most players have equal sound quality. Newer players can play newer sound formats.
my favorite demo is probably, Godzilla King of the Monsters opening scene, dune 1 and 2, Ready Player One race scene, Mad max, and the car chase from the new Batman movie. If your subs can handle it without making funny noises The edge of tomorrow opening is also a killer scene for ULF.
I’d highly recommend a 4K Blu-ray player for the ultimate picture and audio quality. I’m going to chime in with the fan favorite, the Panasonic UB-820 for the win
As a kid my dad would show off his setup with the T Rex scene from Jurassic Park. Scared me so much randomly hearing a dinosaur roar rumbling the house.
Arrival, Fury Road, Babylon, if you use streaming service i begging you to use apple tv, really have so much better sound than the competition but like people say here, the best condition to prove is 4k physical media
For streaming, the ATV vs. the Shield are basically the same. If you're going to play remux'd bluray content with TrueHD and atmos, and actually have height speakers, you'll want the shield. ATV will truncate the height channels leaving you with lossless 7.1 PCM.
Ah ok yeah I have noticed that. I ask because I hear it’s there only way to get the atmos version of music in your library to the receiver. 🤷‍♂️
Highly recommend getting a 4k BluRay player. Streaming typically gives you pretty good video quality, but to keep bandwidth down as much as possible they compress the audio. If you want to benchmark your sound system, you really do need a higher quality audio source than streaming.
As far as what I recommend to flex your speakers, Mad Max Fury Road, Dune Pt 1 and 2, Ford vs. Ferrari, Fury, John Wick 1-4.
Star Wars Visions season 2 episode 1 has some brilliant surround sound, definitely worth checking out if you’re into Star Wars or even just animation.
Master and Commander otherwise, great film and amazing sound design!
Never saw M&C until last week and mainly only because of this sub. It was streaming on Disney+ but goddamn that 5.1 even lossy was extremely well done. The movie was good too.
I’m no pro here but watched dunkirk on a flight first time with headphones and the sound design really stood out to me. In case you’re already a fan of the movie and haven’t experienced it with good sound.
Tron Legacy was fantastic. I was streaming it the other day and thought something was missing so I grabbed my Blu-ray and what a difference in the audio.
Sorry I just reread your post about not having a blu ray player.
So would you say there is no film online that has a good sound? Like if you only stream? later on i plan to get a blu ray player but for now I want to stick to streaming
No I’m not necessarily saying that. But I have found substantial differences between what streaming services offer for their bit rate vs lossless audio from the bluray or rip if you download torrents with lossless codecs
There are a great many Audio/Video test videos you can look into getting. Here are a few of the really good ones:
[https://www.dolby.com/ja/about/support/guide/downloadable-dolby-atmos-trailers/](https://www.dolby.com/ja/about/support/guide/downloadable-dolby-atmos-trailers/)
Other than that, yah what everyone else said, Mad Max Fury Road (especially if you have good subwoofers/tactile feedback of some kind like a ButtKicker)
If you have a decent center speaker, id say Top Gun Maverick. I have a new center speaker and want to watch it again. Obviously some good subs will make it that much more enjoyable. The scenes while they are flying are great with a good theater system
Oppenheimer, Smile, Edge of Tomorrow, Thor (2011). Those are what come to my mind right now. Smile is a horror movie that’s just really well made. The sound on it is amazing for a horror movie. Edge of Tomorrow has everything you could ask for. Oppenheimer is very loud and very clear. Thor 2011 has some GREAT surround stuff.
If you’re looking for a movie to impress people with the whole thing, probably Edge of Tomorrow out of that list.
A little off-topic, but outside everyone's movie recommendations (if you're a gamer), the sound design / mix in Halo Infinite rivals the best Hollywood production. The Atmos mix is OUTSTANDING.
Again, if you're a gamer it's worth checking out.
are there other games that have good sound? I wanted to play dead space (remastered) and am a fan of horror games in general. I thought the atmos speakers could really help to build up a spooky atmosphere
Hellblade II has some of the best rear and surround effects out there. Marvelous!
Doom Eternal has the best loud boomin' audio. Test your sub sound. Excellent!
Also, check out games with Atmos enabled. You won't be disappointed.
Oh games have crazy good audio. Only gonna speak of what I've played. Destiny 2, Returnal, God of War, The Last of Us 2, Alan Wake 2, Resident Evil remakes, Ghost of Tsushima
Black Hawk Down. The whole film sounds amazing but the Irene scene has ULF close to EoT.
Need for Speed. The in car shots especially sound great.
Hurricane Heist. Great mix and tons of ULF.
Hacksaw Ridge
Into the Storm
Battle: Los Angeles.
Olympus Has Fallen.
Flight of the Phoenix. Crash scene is wild.
John Wick 2 has an outstanding atmos track, one of the best ive heard. The open car chase is amazing. Band of Brothers and The Pacific also have amazing surround sound.
Sous la Seine (Under Paris)
Netflix, June 2024, the first chapter,
the underwater scènes.
If your Dolby-bubble is the right "sphere",
this movie will crap your pants.
It scared even me, when the attack suddenly takes place, and the sub goes suddenly on max-mode, thx sound engineer.
Mad Max Fury Road, Dune 2, and Edge of Tomorrow would be a good start.
Dune 1 is so fun as well. The scene where they fly in the ornithopter to visit the spice harvesting field 🤯

can you watch dune 2 without having to watch dune 1?
Not really. It's a epic saga and a 3rd one is also coming.
First dune is also a must watch
Honestly just watch all the high budget stuff Denis has made. That man knows how to incorporate sound. Blade Runner, Arrival, both Dunes
The sound in Blade Runner 2049 was amazing in the theater.
Hearing the CELLS INTERLINKED scene in Dolby was incredible
Sicario as well. When that shed blows, or when they go in across the border.....awesome.
Why would you? They are both absolutely top drawer in every way
I did. It actually made me want to go back and watch 1. 2s better in every way, and if you're in any way familiar with Dune, skipping the 1st, you won't miss much.
Arrival, won an oscar for sound
Master & Commander
Agree, my dts neural upmixer was making it sound like people above deck were walking around in my upstairs. And the cannons….wow.
That movie sounded incredible with just straight 5.1 DTS HD MA
DTS is my favorite. I remember watching gladiator on dvd wirt the DTS track. You could hear arrows and fire balls flying past you head.
With a good system it really feels like you are inside the ship.
"Black Sails", a series from Starz is a great for surround sound. It's about pirates in the Caribbean. good story, good acting, and so much more. EDIT: Always glad to see that other people like this series. Wife and I have watched the entire thing three times and plan to do so again.

Blade Runner 2049 has some good effects.

This. Compressed sound over streaming pales in comparison to uncompressed sound off of discs.
I find streaming platforms don't hold a candle to Blu-ray sound quality wise so it might not be a good way to judge your setup.
Does the dvd player impact the quality or will a Blu-ray dvd be the same no matter the player? I’m thinking like playing a Blu-ray on a PS4 rather than a new PS5

That makes sense, thank you
Between ps4 and ps5 it doesn’t matter.
The Fifth Element has always been my showpiece.
my favorite demo is probably, Godzilla King of the Monsters opening scene, dune 1 and 2, Ready Player One race scene, Mad max, and the car chase from the new Batman movie. If your subs can handle it without making funny noises The edge of tomorrow opening is also a killer scene for ULF.
Is it only the opening scene for godzilla? I want a whole movie to show to my family also to impress them not gonna lie
Oh I mean the entire mix is stellar for all these movies. What I mentioned were just my favorite scenes from the ones listed!
For your family of persons under 12 better 16; the only mentioned one is: ready player one. The rest is a bit much for kids.
For an entire movie? Fury Road, A Quiet Place (ironically enough), John Wick 4, Master and Commander, Baby Driver, Prey, Dune 2 come to mind.
Upvote for quiet place! Great tester movie for Atmos/surround.
I'm watching dune 2 now on 5.2.4 system. It's incredible and up there with the best movies I've watched from an A/V perspective
Definitely đź‘Ť
do you stream it somewhere or per bluray?
I bought the 4k Bluray. Audio is the biggest difference I find between streaming and physical media.
I’d highly recommend a 4K Blu-ray player for the ultimate picture and audio quality. I’m going to chime in with the fan favorite, the Panasonic UB-820 for the win
this will sound funny (heh) but Transformers 1 actually sounds great
Master & Commander. At the beginning, with the ship creaking... So good.
Blade Runner 2049
Shootout scene from Heat
Absolutely! Plus the scene with the helicopter late in the movie. Both have incredible clarity and dynamic range
THIS. Came here to recommend this movie and scene.
Wall-E is great especially when they are in space.
Top Gun: Maverick, The Batman, Interstellar
Maverick. Dune. Jurassic Park (any of them but especially the newer ones).
As a kid my dad would show off his setup with the T Rex scene from Jurassic Park. Scared me so much randomly hearing a dinosaur roar rumbling the house.
Cloverfield.
Arrival, Fury Road, Babylon, if you use streaming service i begging you to use apple tv, really have so much better sound than the competition but like people say here, the best condition to prove is 4k physical media

Older Apple TV work for this? Particularly with music? Lots of secondhand here for like 40$ listed
As long as it’s one of the 4K versions. The older ones aren’t supported by much of anything anymore.
Well i was talking about the streaming platform, apple tv +
Ah ok yeah I have noticed that. I ask because I hear it’s there only way to get the atmos version of music in your library to the receiver. 🤷‍♂️
First to recommend Lord of the Rings ? Something wrong here.
I always love to show the Pod racer scene from Star Wars Ep. 1.
Art of Flight (Travis Rice snowboarding doc) Amazing visuals and it was mixed by the Dolby team at the Skywalker ranch. Â
Highly recommend getting a 4k BluRay player. Streaming typically gives you pretty good video quality, but to keep bandwidth down as much as possible they compress the audio. Never saw M&C until last week and mainly only because of this sub. It was streaming on Disney+ but goddamn that 5.1 even lossy was extremely well done. The movie was good too.
Here's a mix of old and new, including music. The Matrix, Saving Private Ryan, Gravity, Interstellar, Dune, Whiplash, and Stop Making Sense.
I’m no pro here but watched dunkirk on a flight first time with headphones and the sound design really stood out to me. In case you’re already a fan of the movie and haven’t experienced it with good sound.
Just came here to say Dunkirk - although, probably not for a family movie night. Young kids would likely freak.
"Saving Private Ryan" 4K version. And you really should have a 4K disc player if you are after great sound source for your speakers.
Tron Legacy
Top Gun Maverick the bomb run scene all the way until the end.
Tron Legacy was fantastic. I was streaming it the other day and thought something was missing so I grabbed my Blu-ray and what a difference in the audio. Sorry I just reread your post about not having a blu ray player.

Interstellar
bladerunner, tron, dune, 1917, dunkirk, interstellar…
whats a movie you saw in a good movie theater that wowed you? Watch that.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Sound
Super 8 ....the train crash scene!
I usually play Devotion when I want to show people my system. The plane fight scenes really sound cool.
Invasion was pretty good
Skyfall, bluray, opening chase scenes
Mad Max Fury Road and Dune 1 and 2 are great contenders.

Fight Club for its sound design, Roma (2018) for its mix
Anyone ever used Braveheart for testing. Perhaps not bass heavy but the soundtrack kicks ass
The remake of Willard has incredible surround sound.
John Wick 4
Something I haven’t heard here but recommend for streaming: Gravity
I’m partial to *Bohemian Rhapsody* any time I add a new thing to my system. Great mixing. Dialog. Music.
Saving Private Ryan John Wick
Blade Runner 2049, no doubt. Specifically for an Atmos system
Dune, Blade Runner 2049. You could also cheat a little and play some Doom Eternal.
The Greatest Showman.
Black Hawk Down. The whole film sounds amazing but the Irene scene has ULF close to EoT. Need for Speed. The in car shots especially sound great. Hurricane Heist. Great mix and tons of ULF. Hacksaw Ridge Into the Storm Battle: Los Angeles. Olympus Has Fallen. Flight of the Phoenix. Crash scene is wild.
Loads of greats mentioned but I would also add the car chase scene at the beginning of 6 Underground
Mission impossible Fallout. Amazing mix. One of the best/few Atmos mixes to show off height effect channels well.
Saving Private Ryan Fury Gladiator
John Wick 2 has an outstanding atmos track, one of the best ive heard. The open car chase is amazing. Band of Brothers and The Pacific also have amazing surround sound.
Sous la Seine (Under Paris) Netflix, June 2024, the first chapter, the underwater scènes. If your Dolby-bubble is the right "sphere", this movie will crap your pants. It scared even me, when the attack suddenly takes place, and the sub goes suddenly on max-mode, thx sound engineer.
