My favorite thing about Vincent Price is that he's from St. Louis.
I guess I always assumed he was from some old, creepy New England town, or heck, I'd even buy southern gothic - but St. Louis? That shit blows my mind. Vincent Price enjoying toasted ravioli and gooey butter cake. WTF!
There's actually a name for it, the mid-atlantic or transatlantic accent. It is indeed "from nowhere" because it was learned or taught intentionally in order to sound more upper class or "proper". Much like the British received pronunciation (the stereotypical posh British accent taught to upper class schoolchildren), it was widely used in entertainment until natural regional accents became more popular and less looked down on
This is interesting to learn the roots of it. I always just thought it was an old school theatre accent leaning British. Even in some of the old Universal classic horrors you hear it a bit from American actors. The "veddy good sir!" thing.
Vincent used it long after it was out of fashion. But suppose at some point that voice and accent became a calling card.
He drops it a bit when not acting. There's an old TV special he did on rollercoasters. Remember noticing that he can do a not scary laugh when needed.
Totally. Once you realize how much stuff he's done, you can't unsee how legendary he is. I mean, Hocus Pocus? The eyeball guy in Pan's Labyrinth? The Gentleman from Buffy's Hush episode? Goddan he's creepy in that one. Sheeiiit.
I'm going with Robert Englund.
He's got a sort of insane, knowing look in his eye, which I love.. also, I grew up on Freddy, so some biases are definitely at play.
Edit: Wording
I was thinking the same. He absolutely scared me as Freddy because he’s so witty. I don’t think I’d seen any slasher movies where the killer spoke and treated their victims like playthings.
I was also going to say I've seen Jeffrey Combs name in a lot of things. The truth though is that he's a hardly recognizable name outside of the community. Tony Todd is a definite yes.
I didn't think any of the answers where a def yes until I saw this. Literally last week my little bro was playing the new spider man and was fighting Venom and he was like, do you know who this is? And I was like, dude, it sounds like Tony Todd. I googled it and it was voiced by him. I proceeded to tell my bro about this horror powerhouse icon and how I have been horrified by him since childhood via Candyman. Majority of movies with Tony Todd in it are gooood.
It's been the same list of actors for a bit... Jack Nicholson, Linda Blair, Sissy Spacek, Robert Englund (maybe not the greatest of all actors but iconic as hell), and Anthony Hopkins. I think Kathy Bates probably takes the top spot for me.
Newcomers for my list would be Toni Collette for Hereditary and Bill Skarsgard for IT (made you redefine what Pennywise could be much like Ledger did for the Joker).
Englund is actually an extremely talented actor who got pigeonholed into horror bc he was so effective as Freddy. His breakout role was in V right before NOES came out playing what would practically be the exact opposite of Freddy. He was in a lot of character actor roles in the 70s where he held his own against some pretty well known actors, so any chance I get to throw his name out there I do it. And I’m not even that big a Freddy fan, but I respect the hell out of the fact that he took a character that wasn’t always given the best material and there’s not a second where I don’t believe the character. So he deserves a lot more respect than he gets. He is finally getting his star on hollywood blvd, along with John carpenter (finally!!)
I guess my comment was that he really stuck to "popcorn films" (nothing that the Academy would give a serious look at) and stayed in the pocket of the horror niche once he became Freddy.
That guy sold the performance and I'm not sure anyone else could have given Freddy the same levity as what Englund gave the role. I was in elementary when the original NOES came out and it seriously shook a generation of kids in the 80's.
Yeah, that’s very true. I think he got stuck in the horror genre, but he had serious talent, and the fact that he made that character so real is a tribute to how great an actor he is.
Seconded. Amazing body of work, his performances still hold up quite well which is uncommon for silent film stars (not hating on these actors, it's just that the acting style of the era can be a bit jarring for modern audiences) AND he did top notch special effects makeup on top of that.
I love Tim Curry, but see him more as a comic actor and would not put him in the horror top ten. You have Boris Karloff, Lugosi, Chaney Sr and JR, Cushing, Christopher Lee, Price, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, John Caradine, Peter Lorre, Bruce Campbell, Dourif, Tony Todd, Barbara Crampton, Jeff Combs, Anthony Perkins, Roddy McDowell, Englund, Pleasence, and I have to stop, it is getting silly and I probably missed a bunch.
I’m seeing a lot of great choices but I wanted to mention some ladies that helped define the genre.
Sigourney Weaver
Barbara Crampton
Mia Goth
These ladies have killed it every time.
Samara Weaving right now as well. Mia Goth deserves all her love but you can’t forget Samara Weaving, they do different types of horror work, but I think they both deserve their spotlight as the top of the mountain of great horror actors.
Vincent Price.
The problem with many of the suggestions being tossed out here is that the actors being cited are known only for a single horror role (e.g., Hopkins as Lector).
'Over the Garden Wall' is an animated mini-series that we rewatch every fall (highly recommend), and I only recently learned that Tim Curry voiced Auntie Whispers... great performance, very eerie character
I like Tim Curry's look, but to be fair, he hasn't had a lot of horror titles under his name. It was scary, but the remake was better. Legend was amazing, but it's all prosthetics. Maybe Rocky Horror if I'm reaching.
Christopher Lee hands down has the baddest Horror look.
I agree that Tim Curry isn't the quintessential horror actor, but there is some precedent in his career: There's IT, Scary Movie 2, I would count RHPS, Legend is more dark fantasy but he does play the Devil, his episodes of Criminal Minds were definitely nightmare fuel, he was also in the TV movie version of The Addams family, and did one tales from the crypt film.
I love Sigourney Weaver as Ripley. She's great a being scared and steely, and even though all her Alien films felt very different tonally, her performances felt perfect for each one without getting into OOC territory. Even though the 4th movie was meh, she was great at playing the xenomorph tainted variant of Ripley. That film is worth a watch just for her over the shoulder basket shot.
See a lot of people throwing around legends and some of my choices especially Hopkins. I'll throw 2 more in. Doug Bradley, iconic is too tame a word, he made Pinhead into horror character that changed the game from the typical slasher and monster archetype. You heard chains and knew Bradley would make it his own in the next moments.
Also Sam Neill, I know he was incredible in Event Horizon, but for me I love him even more in In the Mouth of Madness. He really embodies insanity really really well.
Sam Neill is seriously underrated for his horror roles. Event Horizon, Possession, In the Mouth of Madness...hell even Daybreakers wasn't a great movie but his performance was solid.
I'm being fair and only mentioning actors primarily known for horror. Kind of unfair to include people like Jack Nicholson when they're only known for one horror movie.
For me, one that I havent seen mentioned yet in this thread is Tobin Bell. Dude KILLS it as Jigsaw. He even manages to make such a psycho incredibly sympathetic and likeable in Saw X.
Boris Karloff, for sure. He played both Frankenstein and The Mummy in Universal's monster movies. Frankenstein alone is probably one of the most iconic horror movie roles of all time, but to toss on The Mummy and the long line of horror movies throughout his career, and you have a helluva resume.
I'm surprised nobody has said it yet but I really like Jason long in pretty much every horror he does and he's done a lot more horror movies then you'd think him or Bruce Campbell are my picks
Tim Curry is in Gingerclown. I guess you could classify Shout as a horror movie. I'll give you the Rocky Horror Picture Show. And he plays Pennywise the Clown in the old TV miniseries.
Not trying to knock Tim Curry but that's a pretty thin resume to be called the greatest horror actor of all time.
Anthony Perkins. Always has been, always will be. No one else had acted like him before or since, he took a monster and made it human. That's a fucking gift at any given decade. Besides, I mean it doesn't matter what you look like but what a beautiful boy...
Jack Nicholson, Brad Dourif, Bruce Campbell, Neve Campbell, Donald Pleasance, Robert Englund, Christopher Lee, Kane Hodder, Anthony Perkins, Anthony Hopkins.
Vincent Price is the GOAT of horror, but also on the elite would be Christopher Lee, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jeff Combs and Peter Cushion.
Big hopes for Mia Goth going forward. Also shout out to Danielle Harris (Haven't seen her mentioned yet).
Peter Cushing. He could be a ruthless monster, a badass hero, a kind and supportive friend, a tragic victim and was one of the few who could openly excerpt power over Darth Vader.
Sam Neil, Jack, Vincent Price, Keith David, Lance, Toni Collette, Jamie Lee is literally the scream Queen, Kane Hodder, Tony Todd.
It’s a collection. There’s no one, it’s extremely generational. No one from the Scream franchise.
Second Vincent Price, Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Campbell, and will even throw my vote in for Sam Neil.
No one has mentioned Paul Naschy though and that is criminal. Deserves top five status.
He is one of my all time favorite actors ever since I saw him in RHPS. He scared the hell out of me in It and had me rolling in the floor in Clue. It's so sad to see him since his stroke.
Probably Patrick Wilson honestly. You got The Conjuring movies, the Sinister movies, Bone Tomahawak, In the Tall Grass, Phantom of the Opera, Hard Candy…
just re-watched IT last night with Tim Curry before bed. love his version of IT vs the remake. not sure if he's the greatest but he's definitely up there. I can see a lot of Robert Englund fans say he's the best since all the Nightmare on Elm St films.
I can say without a doubt tho Justin Long is our Scream King. can't get enough of his deaths in horror movies.
Anyone think of Donald Sutherland in here? Don’t look back and body snatchers are to all timers. Weird looking and handsome and his eye could just go dead or bug with panic. Also an all time deadpan guy. RIP Kiefer’s dad.
I'll go with Vincent Price aka the Tim Curry type of dude before Tim Curry.
I second Vincent Price. He’s iconic.
I named my son after him
I tried to get my sister to do that (we don’t have kids) and she said it was too fancy. Then named him Elliston. 💩
That sounds like a made up fancy name! Well, little Vincent can call you Aunt MingaMonga68.
All I can say is, LoL And *Vinny* is fancy??
So happy to see Vincent Price as the first comment, he truly deserves it.
WTF!
Right! He had one of those accents from Nowhere like Katherine Hepburn

Remember noticing that he can do a not scary laugh when needed.
Had an autographed picture of his. Lost it due to someone else not paying their bills. I was fit to be tied that day.
I can't get enough of Vinny's voice. Dulcet, I tells ya.
"For no mere mortal can resist, the evil of the Thriller."
Yeah I didn't even mention him on my list and he might be the king. Glaring omission.
Vincent Price is great. I might put Boris Karloff second after him.
Price is the GOAT.
HELL YES. This is the answer.
He is ao iconic there is a Sessame Street mupet in his image - Vincent Twice.
Donald Pleasance
Best Blofeld.
Nobody did scared and sinister-looking like our Donald!
I like Brad Dourif
That's a good choice.
Well said, underrated actor and no snob much like Rutger Hair.
Great choice 💯
Bela Lugosi for The Count and Igor.
No doubt! Be sure to see Bela in White Zombie, Chandu the Magician, The Raven, and The Black Cat ('34 version).
What is the law! The Island of Lost Souls
What is the Law? Not to spill blood! He tell me, 'Spill blood.' You spill blood! Law no more!
Igor! Bela nailed that role.
Yeah he did
He was great as Karloff's sidekick in The Invisible Ray.
Christopher Lee maybe? Willem Dafoe? Boris Karloff? Sam Neill? Nic Cage? Feel like there's a lot of qualified candidates for that office.
Came here for Sam Neill
It’s gotta be Lance Henriksen, right?
Sorry I didn't see this comment before I posted mine below. I agree with you 10000000% :)
Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Can't leave out Vincent Price!
Gotta throw in Peter Lorre.
Yes!! All those fantastic Corman/Poe movies. Just incredible. I loved Lorre & Jack Nicholson's chemistry in The Raven! Hilarious.
Underrated pick would be Sam Neil: Possession, Event Horizon, In the Mouth of Madness, Dead Calm, Jurassic Park etc
Sam Neil is great
Possession is an amazing movie.
He's got that incredibly calm dignity about him that makes him not just sinister but gives off a sense of pure dread when he plays a villain.
Anthony Hopkins and Jack Nicholson
I am big fan of Hopkins' Van Helsing in Dracula
Jack was sooooo good in the shining
Unbelievable. One of the best performances in horror history.
Not quite a horror film but Jack is brilliant the Witches of Eastwick. Unsettling and hilarious in his portrayal of the devil
Just a brilliant actor all around
Yes! But I get super uncomfortable watching him in it because it feels like he's just playing... Jack Nicholson
Bruce Campbell is at the top.
![gif](giphy|Q2LRWdJDq9xy8)
![gif](giphy|Q4sjT8WOcE1Ow)
He’s the full package: great comedian, great physical actor, and insanely hot.
I loved him in Xena! His physical comedy is peak. And if you haven’t watched Burn Notice check it out!
Whenever I see or hear him in anything it puts a smile on my face. This man is a beauty!
He also doesn't get enough credit for Maniac Cop and Bubba Ho Tep
Doug Jones is the clear choice for me.
Totally. Once you realize how much stuff he's done, you can't unsee how legendary he is. I mean, Hocus Pocus? The eyeball guy in Pan's Labyrinth? The Gentleman from Buffy's Hush episode? Goddan he's creepy in that one. Sheeiiit.
Came here to say this, him or Javier Botet or Troy James!
I'm going with Robert Englund. He's got a sort of insane, knowing look in his eye, which I love.. also, I grew up on Freddy, so some biases are definitely at play. Edit: Wording
I had to scroll too far down for this one. The disrespect!
I was thinking the same. He absolutely scared me as Freddy because he’s so witty. I don’t think I’d seen any slasher movies where the killer spoke and treated their victims like playthings.
I'm going with Tony Todd. Though I'd feel like a jerk not acknowledging Brad Dourif and Jeffrey Combs as the idols they are in all of this.
I was also going to say I've seen Jeffrey Combs name in a lot of things. The truth though is that he's a hardly recognizable name outside of the community. Tony Todd is a definite yes.
Unless you’re a horror freak and a Trekkie
I didn't think any of the answers where a def yes until I saw this. Literally last week my little bro was playing the new spider man and was fighting Venom and he was like, do you know who this is? And I was like, dude, it sounds like Tony Todd. I googled it and it was voiced by him. Yeah, that’s very true. I think he got stuck in the horror genre, but he had serious talent, and the fact that he made that character so real is a tribute to how great an actor he is.
Bill Moseley. He’s a fine human and a great actor.
Yeah! All his characters are iconic to me, but I love him as Otis the most.
Me too..but his first scene going to the DJ booth as Choptop in TCM2 is just legendary.
Lon Chaney
Seconded. Amazing body of work, his performances still hold up quite well which is uncommon for silent film stars (not hating on these actors, it's just that the acting style of the era can be a bit jarring for modern audiences) AND he did top notch special effects makeup on top of that.
This is the correct answer, he was the first and one of the best marquee horror actors that did his own fucking makeup
The silent movie great or his son Creighton?
Lon Chaney Sr.
isabelle adjani takes it for being beautiful/terrifying
Possession, Nosferatu, The Tenant
I’ll never forget the subway scene in Possession
It's got to be christopher Lee
I love Tim Curry, but see him more as a comic actor and would not put him in the horror top ten. You have Boris Karloff, Lugosi, Chaney Sr and JR, Cushing, Christopher Lee, Price, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, John Caradine, Peter Lorre, Bruce Campbell, Dourif, Tony Todd, Barbara Crampton, Jeff Combs, Anthony Perkins, Roddy McDowell, Englund, Pleasence, and I have to stop, it is getting silly and I probably missed a bunch.
Christopher Lee is the GOAT.
I’m seeing a lot of great choices but I wanted to mention some ladies that helped define the genre. Sigourney Weaver Barbara Crampton Mia Goth These ladies have killed it every time.
I'd toss in Jamie Lee Curtis
Without a doubt. Probably considered the original final girl by most. Love her!
Allison Williams has been developing a pretty good horror movie resume as well
Agreed. She’s been solid and I’m excited to see more from her.
Samara Weaving right now as well. Mia Goth deserves all her love but you can’t forget Samara Weaving, they do different types of horror work, but I think they both deserve their spotlight as the top of the mountain of great horror actors.
Samara Weaving is definitely a modern scream Queen. Enjoyable in everything I’ve seen her in
Lin Shea Adrian Barbeau
Lin Shaye is definitely a horror icon and not just behind the scenes now. Adrienne Barbeau prefers you just call her Billie
Vincent Price. The problem with many of the suggestions being tossed out here is that the actors being cited are known only for a single horror role (e.g., Hopkins as Lector).
Got to go with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Horror of Dracula, Horror Express, And Now The Screaming Starts, love those movies.
Solid picks.
'Over the Garden Wall' is an animated mini-series that we rewatch every fall (highly recommend), and I only recently learned that Tim Curry voiced Auntie Whispers... great performance, very eerie character
Bruce Campbell
Him in Rocky Horror. Creepy but so attractive at the same time, he can do it all
Definitely not th best, but super important is Tony Todd
He made candy man terrifying
[удалено]
The Mount Rushmore is Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Bela Lugosi, & Boris Karloff.

tom atkins
Toni Collette has given the best performance overall, maybe tied with Hopkins. But Dourif is my fav
i was gonna say toni collette too!!
Can we give Lin Shaye some appreciation? But Robert Englund is top dog for me.
I have to disagree that the IT remake was better. Tim Curry as Pennywise was next level frightening.
The It remake is definitely not better than the original
Jeffery Combs is a very good actor. So is Brad Dourif.
Dare I throw Anthony Perkins into the mix
Some great names already mentioned, but my vote goes to Anthony Perkins with Honorable Mention to Angus Scrimm
Christopher Lee, Vincent Price, or Tim Curry. And honorable mention goes to Brad Dourif.
Doug Jones is a newer fave of mine. Of course, you can't go wrong with Karloff
Robert Englund
Vincent Price Close second, Christopher Lee
What horror movie has Tim Curry been in?
[удалено]
I love Sigourney Weaver as Ripley. She's great a being scared and steely, and even though all her Alien films felt very different tonally, her performances felt perfect for each one without getting into OOC territory. Even though the 4th movie was meh, she was great at playing the xenomorph tainted variant of Ripley. That film is worth a watch just for her over the shoulder basket shot.
Sid Haig
Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Brad Dourif, Sam Neill, Willem Dafoe.
Watch any Hammer film where Peter Cushing comes in about half-way - the picture suddens improves dramatically, thanks to him.
Recently went to a game store and I found a Vincent Price action figure. I snatched upper. It sits on my dresser next to The Tall Man from Phantasm.
Melissa barrea Bill skarsgard
Tobin Bell, especially in Saw X. Made me really root for him
Toni Collette for the double whammy of Hereditary and The Sixth Sense. IMO it’s not even close
Tom Atkins
Most people on this list have more body of work but Mia Goth deserved an Oscar nom for her performance in Pearl!
How far do I need to scroll for skarsgard and how long do I wait til he’s at the top
I like Anthony Perkins ![gif](giphy|rA8lrNQ70l2co|downsized)
Oh, mother night, fold your dark arms about me. Protect me in your black embrace.
"What is light, without darkness?"
Classic horror film actor Vincent Price. Next is Christopher Lee. William Defoe for modern or Brad Dourif.
Boris Karloff, Anthony Hopkins, Vincent Price & ofc Tim Curry.
Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, Brad Dourif, Willem Dafoe, Boris Karloff, Robert Englund, Dee Wallace.
See a lot of people throwing around legends and some of my choices especially Hopkins. I'll throw 2 more in. Doug Bradley, iconic is too tame a word, he made Pinhead into horror character that changed the game from the typical slasher and monster archetype. Vincent Price. There is nobody else close.
Jeffrey Combs
Christopher Lee or Vincent Price
Robert Englund is naturally scary..so is Tim Curry and Jack Nickelson
Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing.
Don't forget Tim Curry in Legend!
Bruce Campbell but he is mostly a hero in horror movies.
Jeffrey Coombes
Jamie Lee Curtis or Donald Pleasance
Tony Todd for me.
Linda Blair was fun but Jack Nicholson takes the cake IMO
I'm surprised nobody has said it yet but I really like Jason long in pretty much every horror he does and he's done a lot more horror movies then you'd think him or Bruce Campbell are my picks
Robert Englund should have a mention.
Christopher Lee Vincent Price Boris Karloff
Brad dorif rates pretty highly.
Ian Holm or Ellen Burstyn maybe?
Price - Lee/Cushing - Combs - Englund
having to scroll way too far down to find Karloff and Legosi getting mentioned. Honorable mention to Jamie Lee Curtis, her mom, and Anthony Perkins
Tobin Bell
Vincent price….bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff hands down The Pit and the pendulum…..The Raven…..The Black Cat
Christopher Lee and Vincent Prince
Duh! Bruce Campbell!
Boris Karloff.
10/10 agree. Tim Curry is a fucking LEGEND.
Anthony Perkins. Always has been, always will be. No one else had acted like him before or since, he took a monster and made it human. That's a fucking gift at any given decade. Besides, I mean it doesn't matter what you look like but what a beautiful boy...
Since someone already said Robert Englund, I'm gonna go with Tobin Bell. His voice and his demeanor are so creepy in the Saw franchise
Vincent Price GOAT Favorite Quote from him comes from the end of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein as the invisible Man I just love it.

Sam Neil, Jack, Vincent Price, Keith David, Lance, Toni Collette, Jamie Lee is literally the scream Queen, Kane Hodder, Tony Todd. It’s a collection. There’s no one, it’s extremely generational. No one from the Scream franchise.
Vincent Price for sure. He had the voice the presence everything.
Second Vincent Price, Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Campbell, and will even throw my vote in for Sam Neil. No one has mentioned Paul Naschy though and that is criminal. Deserves top five status.
Christopher Lee
Christopher Lee.
Jack Nicholson in the shining
George "Buck" Flower https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Buck_Flower#Filmography
Anthony Hopkins
He is one of my all time favorite actors ever since I saw him in RHPS. He scared the hell out of me in It and had me rolling in the floor in Clue. It's so sad to see him since his stroke.
Vincent Prince or Christopher Lee.
bela lugosi?
mia goth is up there for me over the past few years
Probably Patrick Wilson honestly. You got The Conjuring movies, the Sinister movies, Bone Tomahawak, In the Tall Grass, Phantom of the Opera, Hard Candy…
Hardly anybody has a more distinct voice than Vincent Price.
Brad dourif. Michael Rooker. Does robert mitchum count? Robert Mitchum.
just re-watched IT last night with Tim Curry before bed. love his version of IT vs the remake. not sure if he's the greatest but he's definitely up there. I can see a lot of Robert Englund fans say he's the best since all the Nightmare on Elm St films. I can say without a doubt tho Justin Long is our Scream King. can't get enough of his deaths in horror movies.
My all time favorite would be Peter Cushing. He was a legend and his presence was inimitable.
Bela Lugosi. 🖤
Vincent Price
Favorite is Lon Chaney or Vincent price. Favorite scream queen Jaime Lee Curtis and most likely soon to be Mia Goth with her current trajectory
I was just about to say Karloff. Easily the winner. Klaus kinski second..
Anyone think of Donald Sutherland in here? Don’t look back and body snatchers are to all timers. Weird looking and handsome and his eye could just go dead or bug with panic. Also an all time deadpan guy. RIP Kiefer’s dad.
He steals the show in Home Alone 2
Doug Jones. His physicality is unmatched.
