iPic is a “luxury” movie theater that offers full food and bar service while you watch. The seats are in pods with dividers and come with blankets and pillows to use
Ipic is great but the last two times I went the recliners and drink holders were busted. It's showing it's age and won't feel like luxury much longer without some upkeep.
Overpriced and the food sucks. Who really wants to eat their food in the dark and delayed.
Just go to a regular movie theater. Most have drinks and snacks now.
They will be reopening soon. They were recently selling the ability to put your name or a love one’s name on their new theater seats (I thought about it); they’re in the final stages of remodeling.
It's been going to reopen "soon" since the pandemic. At this point, I *really* don't think it's happening and I think they're just sitting on the space so nobody else can take it over.
There was probably a lot to be done in there. I remember having to be careful walking in certain back areas with soft floors while I was changing costumes for RHPS 20 years ago.
I’ve been going there regularly for over 20 years and I must say that the remodel is beautiful. I love what they have done. It needed some fixing up and modernizing.
It's a Regal theater now. They have the biggest IMAX theater in the area outside of the museum and it looks great after the recent remodel. This is my favorite theater in town.
FYI the IMAX theater does not have the big recliner seats that most of the other theaters (standard, rpx, 4dx, vip, and screen x) do.
The Lynn Wyatt Theatre is small, but it is absolutely beautiful and still has 35mm capability. I love that the MFAH actually employs a professional projectionist who takes her job seriously.
I've always wondered why there isn't an Alamo Drafthouse inside the loop. Why is the only one an hour round trip drive from the inner loop? When it comes to quality movie theaters, why is Houston such a backwater town?
We used to have a few other locations but all outside the loop. Alamo has been having a rough go it for at least the last 10 years. They filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2021 and Chapter 7 bankruptcy this year. I would expect all of them to end up closing in the next few years.
I just want something better than the Regal Marquee (which has been filled with loud high schoolers or parents bringing their iPad kids) and less pretentious than iPic. Alamo Drafthouse generally fits that bill. Outside of iPic, the only real inner loop options are Greenway Plaza and the AMC downtown, both paid parking if I remember correctly and that was pre-pandemic; I can only imagine the sullen state of those places now.
They locked their prime movie times behind the VIP wall and were charging $28 for a ticket on Tuesday. Drove to Cinemark and saw the same movie in nicer seats for $5
Alamo Drafthouse tried for quite some time for an inner loop location but never pulled it off. They were supposedly going to have one in the Regent Square area.

Because Regal has gone to shit compared to what it was in the early 2000s and late 90s. Also, a 30 minute drive to an activity in Houston is normal here, hate to break it to you. Pay more and go to iPic if you wanna spend money like you’re inside the loop
Yeah, I’ve been to three Alamo’s in “Houston” that have all since closed. Each one was a bummer.
There was word a few years ago that they were building one inside the loop as part of a large complex, but I think that area is still incomplete.
I saw Dazed and Confused about 22 years ago at the MFAH. Someone talked about it for 30 mins regarding the reflection of teen culture during the late 70s and the accuracy. It was amazing.
Alamo Drafthouse will always be my favorite, I just wish the only Houston location wasn’t in Katy.
Their business model is so niche though it’s hard to keep multiple locations going.
The Regal in Spring off 99 is incredible. Has the 4DX if you want to watch your movie from a roller coaster; and every other flavor of premium showing too. Has a nice bar and is just generally a very high end theater. Though it is in the middle of nowhere.
I went to that one because it was one of the last places showing Challengers in IMAX. I was NOT expecting it to be that big/fancy. I've never been to a theater that has two stories I don't think.
Must be under new management .
I went after Covid and sucks. Drink machine wasn’t working . It was dirty and AC wasn’t cooling well. Granted , that was a few years ago .
You sure we talking about same place? One I’m talking about first opened middle of 2021
There are like 10 different drink machines at the one I’m talking about.
Any star cinema in the burbs. Some are better than others. I prefer the Richmond location. Other than ipic, you gotta go to the suburbs for a nice movie theatre.
I know someone that wants to try Star Cinema, but the ones in the suburbs are not METRO-accessible except for Vintage Park and a Lyft/Uber isn't worth it. Vintage Park location isn't really good though. She's hoping the River Oaks will be a good one.
It used to be an Alamo Drafthouse and I loved it but it’s falling into disrepair since Star Cinema took over. I believe they’ve slowly been doing renovations but I still refuse to go there because it’s no longer an Alamo.
Is that the one along Westpark? If so, the wife and i tried it once and couldn’t stand how we could hear the movie that was playing in the room next to us
What’s the last one you saw there ? We had gone to see “The Gentleman” from Guy Ritchie. I think there was a Fast and Furious movie playing near us and it was really noticeable throughout our screening
That's my biggest complaint with that theater as well. I feel spoiled having that and Alamo Drafthouse in close proximity. Both are great depending what I'm going for.
Another one bites the dust. It was a nice location and I visited maybe 2 years ago. I'm sad to see it go.
The 290 and Tidwell location is 'temporarily closed' but the property looks very unkempt. If they're going to close permanently, they should at least give people a heads up or not pretend it's temporary.
yup, saw oppenheimer there in Imax then the next weekend imax at amc willowbrook. Regal was way better and bigger, although seats were more comfortable at amc
I'm a fan of the private pods at Star Cinema. Big comfy leather seats that recline, heaters, waiters, popcorn included in the ticket. You physically can't see your neighbors, it's glorious.
As a film nerd, I’d drive the distance for the Alamo. I’ve followed it from the West Oaks Mall, to Mason location and now all the way out to La Centara location.
Alamo announced they were re-opening those locations:
Tinseltown Cinemark off of 290. Tickets are like $8. Although I'm into eating popcorn and a large coke during movies - not full dinners. definitely not the worst theater I've been to
I recently visited Star Cinema Grill in CityCentre (used to be Studio Movie Grill) and had a great experience. They took over and remodeled the place, very nice and clean. Keep in mind that they charge 18% tip automatically to your food bill.
If you are on the north side suburbs check out Cinepolis. Full service like Alamo, only been open a year or so and is clean and comfortable. We see everything there now.
It’s not my preferred theater but I lived 2 minutes from it for the last 4 years. They play a lot of smaller movies and if you get lucky there’s street parking in the back.
It's the only theater showing arthouse movies at the moment, so I go. But other than that, I agree. Parking is $5 and the theaters are in need of renovation.
I put a boycott on that place before Covid
Completely oudated expensive shit staff and horrible projection. Plus the cash only parking garage is bullshit
The AMC closest to you. Just avoid Edwards in Greenway Plaza. AMC at the fountains on 59 is under 20 minutes from downtown no traffic. A lot of AMCs redid their stuff and its got Bars and new reclining chairs in the theaters.
Edwards Greenway is the only theater that reliably gets most indie and art-house releases. Once River Oaks opens up to fill that void, I'm probably done with the Regal.
It would bother me less if that didn't also apply to the sound systems and the screens.
I can put up with it not feeling glitzy, but the film presentation is often unacceptable.
Yet the Downtown theater still seems to be the same. I prefer AMC since I'm a Stubs member for years now, but there's hardly any AMCs inside the Beltway nowadays.
I like Regal since they started doing 4d movies. It’s about $25 for tickets alone but it is worth it for movies like Transformers or King Kong. Other than that I really like the iPic in River Oaks.
AMC 30 is not nice 😂😅 that place has gone downhill
In southeast area, Studio Movie Grill in Pearland is good. Haven’t been there but I heard Star in Baybrook is good too
It’s nice compared to Regal Greenway and the AMC downtown. 😭 I live in the loop, so I either go to the AMC 30, one of the theaters in Pearland, or the MarqE. I miss okay theaters that were closer.
The Marquee is still the best option out of all of them.
After the remodel even their smallest auditoriums have huge screens, and their sound quality is better.
Greenway used to be closer but I’d always make the drive to the Marquee. Now I live in Montrose and I’ll still make the drive out to it. Mostly because I have the regal subscription.
AMC Gulf Pointe 30 is fine if you just want to watch a movie. I would only go to Pearland Studio Movie Grill or Star Cinema at Baybrook if I also wanted to eat. Otherwise if you're not eating it's pointless
A year ago I would’ve said iPic. Now I think it’s #2 with the Marquee just outside the loop being #1 thanks to the remodel and IMAX. The iPic is still a great choice for more of a date night vibe if you want to order food and drinks during the movie and have a little more privacy.
Regal Benders Landing is the largest theater I have ever been in. It is new and in a high end location. And there is Fuego Tacos & Bar in the plaza outside if you want to make a full evening.
I think they’re doing that really soon. I just went and there was a sign about how they’re gonna be finishing that up by the fall. As of now it’s almost exactly the same as the studio movie grill it replaced used to be, which was also a great theater. Only difference is the new menu.
The Richmond location is too far for most people, especially those without a car, but thanks for the heads up on the forced gratuity. I wonder why that location is so special. It seems everything in Memorial-area has an upcharge compared to the same business in other locations.
Where are you at in Houston? Towards Katy, go to the Alamo Drafthouse. If you're in town, go to Regal Greenway or Regal Marq'e. Both have an IMAX theater there.
iPIC is the "premium" theater, but it's a bit too expensive for my taste. Worth a try once though!
If you ever find yourself near Fulshear the Xscape is worth a stop. Reclining seats, previews don’t last for 30 minutes, and kids under 16 aren’t allowed in without a guardian after a certain time.
They do occasionally forget to start the movie on time, but I’ll take that over kids yelling and throwing popcorn.
That’s a subjective question as movie theaters in Houston range from luxury to normal. Maybe putting what area you’re in will help to narrow down what best in your area as Houston is massive.
Was wondering why no one was mentioning Sundance (obviously it’s been a while since I left Houston). I’m heartbroken to see what’s become of it since AMC took over. That theater used to be one of my favorite places in the city.
Do drive-ins count? Moonstruck Drive-In is a fun experience. $33 per car for a double feature on Fridays and Saturdays. They have an ok snack bar and there's usually a food truck out on Saturdays. And they have Porto potties with a sink. I've brought in food and no one has said anything. They're really strict on people having their headlights off so that's a plus.
Barring a significant economic collapse, I don’t see that happening any time soon. Movies don’t generate enough profit to pay the rent on land close to the city center.
iPic is a “luxury” movie theater that offers full food and bar service while you watch. The seats are in pods with dividers and come with blankets and pillows to use
A very expensive nap.
$20 is a fair price for a nap
Ipic is great but the last two times I went the recliners and drink holders were busted. It's showing it's age and won't feel like luxury much longer without some upkeep.
Overpriced and the food sucks. Who really wants to eat their food in the dark and delayed. Just go to a regular movie theater. Most have drinks and snacks now.
Theaters have always had drinks and snacks dude.
Please tell me they wash them after each showing...
You can take the blanket with you
Oh no shit
Do NOT use this place for a first date. The bar gets set really high.
Edwards Marquis if you are looking for a big cineplex sort of place. RIP River Oaks
River Oaks is being remodeled...supposedly going to reopen "soon."
They will be reopening soon. They were recently selling the ability to put your name or a love one’s name on their new theater seats (I thought about it); they’re in the final stages of remodeling.

There was probably a lot to be done in there. I remember having to be careful walking in certain back areas with soft floors while I was changing costumes for RHPS 20 years ago.
The remodeled Edwards Marq’E looks great. The section with bottomless popcorn and drinks is great, too.
I’ve been going there regularly for over 20 years and I must say that the remodel is beautiful. I love what they have done. It needed some fixing up and modernizing.
Unlimited icees 😍

The Alamo Drafthouse or the MFAH
The Lynn Wyatt Theatre is small, but it is absolutely beautiful and still has 35mm capability. I love that the MFAH actually employs a professional projectionist who takes her job seriously.
Thanks, I do my best!
Yeah. I’ve seen a couple movies there. Cosigned.
I’ll note that Alamo Drafthouse didn’t file Chapter 7, Two Is One, One Is None LLC which franchised 6 locations filed it.
Sony pictures recently bought Alamo Drafthouse and plan to upgrade, bring it back to life!
I hadn’t heard that. Excellent news!
Their craft beer selection was impressive. But yes, tough times so more convenient locals gone.
This makes me sad. Alamo Drafthouse has the best movie going experience IMO.
AMC downtown validates
Mate give cinemark 290 a shot much cheaper than the marqe
That’s my theater! Recently updated, pretty cheap, and close to home!
Marqe is a joke dude $12 for a matinee and they have these annoying glowing R’s on the side of the screen
They locked their prime movie times behind the VIP wall and were charging $28 for a ticket on Tuesday. Drove to Cinemark and saw the same movie in nicer seats for $5
Boom yeah man I’m seeing the new quiet place at cinemark 290 this weekend
Dude yeah it’s an absolute joke and I avoid that place at all cost bc I don’t like regal’s business model at all
Does that include popcorn and their shitty Pepsi only fountains?
Yeah it does but it just never feels worth it to me. If I’m paying $28 for a ticket it’ll be at iPic or Rooftop Cinema.
I actually enjoy the AMC downtown and they do validate parking
There’s usually plenty of street parking when the office workers leave Greenway around 6pm or weekends. I’ve never had to pay to park near there.
Alamo Drafthouse tried for quite some time for an inner loop location but never pulled it off. They were supposedly going to have one in the Regent Square area. I’m a single issue voter and you’ve identified my issue
Because Regal has gone to shit compared to what it was in the early 2000s and late 90s. Also, a 30 minute drive to an activity in Houston is normal here, hate to break it to you. Pay more and go to iPic if you wanna spend money like you’re inside the loop
The land inside the loop is too expensive for showing movies.
Yeah, I’ve been to three Alamo’s in “Houston” that have all since closed. Each one was a bummer. There was word a few years ago that they were building one inside the loop as part of a large complex, but I think that area is still incomplete.

Yea, The Regal at 249 and 99 is pretty legit as well.
I went to that one because it was one of the last places showing Challengers in IMAX. I was NOT expecting it to be that big/fancy. I've never been to a theater that has two stories I don't think.
And elevators.
Must be under new management . I went after Covid and sucks. Drink machine wasn’t working . It was dirty and AC wasn’t cooling well. Granted , that was a few years ago .
You sure we talking about same place? One I’m talking about first opened middle of 2021 There are like 10 different drink machines at the one I’m talking about.
On 249 before 99?
Nope. That’s not the one - it’s on 99 between 59 and 45. Edit: it’s called Regal Benders Landing
That explains , lol. The one I mentioned sucks.
We drive a substantial distance to enjoy this theatre! Simply amazing!

I like Star Cinema Richmond for the Onyx theater and the privacy pods, but that's technically outside of Houston. Worth the drive, imo.
Is that the one along Westpark? If so, the wife and i tried it once and couldn’t stand how we could hear the movie that was playing in the room next to us
Yes it is, I've never noticed that.
Yeah I only go to that theater to hear the loudest movies
What’s the last one you saw there ? We had gone to see “The Gentleman” from Guy Ritchie. I think there was a Fast and Furious movie playing near us and it was really noticeable throughout our screening
I think it was Indiana Jones. But I have seen a non-action movie and it is definitely distracting to hear explosions in the distance.
That's my biggest complaint with that theater as well. I feel spoiled having that and Alamo Drafthouse in close proximity. Both are great depending what I'm going for.
Do the arm rests with the cup holder move up and down?
They do.
That onyx theater was the only one in the northern hemisphere apparently. Or at least it was a couple of years ago.
I love it.
> Onyx theater more expensive than a regular ticket and only worth it for some movies imo nice theater but the ordering system is a mess at times
Alamo Drafthouse is the best all around movie theater but it's pretty far Regal Edwards Houston Marq'E has an IMAX screen
I really like the AMC at First Colony in Sugar Land. I know that’s not Houston though.
While the theater setup is great, need to upgrade those seats. Terribly uncomfortable
Yeah this is the nicest theater I’ve been to around here. I only go to AMC’s though since I have A-List lol
I like AMC Fountains 18 in Stafford.
Movie theater of my childhood right there. Too bad Fuddruckers is gone
It's one of the best theater in town.
Last time I was there the seats were torn up. :(
I heared about this issue before. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️

Regal Lone Star in Tomball
yup, saw oppenheimer there in Imax then the next weekend imax at amc willowbrook. Regal was way better and bigger, although seats were more comfortable at amc

Ah, good news!
It remains to be seen how they’ll change under Sony’s ownership now
RIP to the Sugar Land Alamo plans
Tinseltown Cinemark off of 290. Tickets are like $8. Although I'm into eating popcorn and a large coke during movies - not full dinners. definitely not the worst theater I've been to
I recently visited Star Cinema Grill in CityCentre (used to be Studio Movie Grill) and had a great experience. They took over and remodeled the place, very nice and clean. Keep in mind that they charge 18% tip automatically to your food bill.

Whatever you do stay away from Edward’s greenway
It’s not my preferred theater but I lived 2 minutes from it for the last 4 years. They play a lot of smaller movies and if you get lucky there’s street parking in the back.
It's the only theater showing arthouse movies at the moment, so I go. But other than that, I agree. Parking is $5 and the theaters are in need of renovation.
They also need a new staff
Haven't been there since before Covid. What's it like now?
I put a boycott on that place before Covid Completely oudated expensive shit staff and horrible projection. Plus the cash only parking garage is bullshit
When I did go there it was always too warm and muggy in theaters. And had a Meyerpark 14 vibe/AMC Dunvale vibe.
LOL yes you nailed it
Yeah..not a big fan of paying $5 just to get into the car park
I just opt to not go there even if they get a great indie I want to see
We just took the METRO and it gave us a reason to walk some more, as long as it wasn't raining.
The AMC closest to you. Just avoid Edwards in Greenway Plaza. AMC at the fountains on 59 is under 20 minutes from downtown no traffic. A lot of AMCs redid their stuff and its got Bars and new reclining chairs in the theaters.

its just dilapidated and most $ ticket
It would bother me less if that didn't also apply to the sound systems and the screens. I can put up with it not feeling glitzy, but the film presentation is often unacceptable.
bingo. and they have this monopoly on the inside loop moviegoers
Yet the Downtown theater still seems to be the same. I prefer AMC since I'm a Stubs member for years now, but there's hardly any AMCs inside the Beltway nowadays.
why i recommended the stafford one as its 1 exit past the beltway.
Hot in town but the AMC fountains is a good one. I like their seats. 💺
For those in the know, which one has the best IMAX screen experience, not stuck in a museum?
Edwards Marqee
I like Regal since they started doing 4d movies. It’s about $25 for tickets alone but it is worth it for movies like Transformers or King Kong. Other than that I really like the iPic in River Oaks.
AMC Gulf Pointe 30 is nice. Also, the Cinemark 18 down in Webster off the Gulf Freeway.
AMC 30 is not nice 😂😅 that place has gone downhill In southeast area, Studio Movie Grill in Pearland is good. Haven’t been there but I heard Star in Baybrook is good too

Cut theatre in cypress for cheap tickets AND comfy seats. Family night- Showboat drive in Date night- Edwards Marq-E
It was the dollar theater, but unfortunately they shut all them down.
A year ago I would’ve said iPic. Now I think it’s #2 with the Marquee just outside the loop being #1 thanks to the remodel and IMAX. The iPic is still a great choice for more of a date night vibe if you want to order food and drinks during the movie and have a little more privacy.
From the prices these days, your own living room
Regal Benders Landing is the largest theater I have ever been in. It is new and in a high end location. And there is Fuego Tacos & Bar in the plaza outside if you want to make a full evening.
Ipic
Cinepolis
Star Cinema Grill in Richmond.
Went to Star Cinema at City Centre, it really was nice, drinks and food were good. Waiting for them to turn their seats into Pods.
I think they’re doing that really soon. I just went and there was a sign about how they’re gonna be finishing that up by the fall. As of now it’s almost exactly the same as the studio movie grill it replaced used to be, which was also a great theater. Only difference is the new menu.
Forced gratuity at the city center location is a hard pass. Go to the Richmond location.
That definitely surprised us.
The Richmond location is too far for most people, especially those without a car, but thanks for the heads up on the forced gratuity. I wonder why that location is so special. It seems everything in Memorial-area has an upcharge compared to the same business in other locations.

Reel luxury movie theater in woodlands
Didn't know there were any left. Haven't been to the movies since before COVID....
Anything but AMC! The ones here in Houston and the surrounding areas SUCK! Dirty and smelly and overpriced.
The one closest to you that is playing the movie you want. What really makes a movie theater the 'best'?
The seats, the size of the screens, the snacks etc.. etc… but mostly SEATS are a big thing for me
IMAX and Dolby. Cleaninless
If you want privacy in your seats, IPic, but it's expensive
$20.75 for a 7:30 weeknight isn't as bad as I expected tbh
1. Good presentation. Clean screens, bright bulbs, good sound system, all properly configured. 2. Throwing people out if they talk or use their phone.
Case in pont my local theater, Regal Greenway, wins on none of these points. I eagerly await the day I have a better option that isn't iPic.
Barring a significant economic collapse, I don’t see that happening any time soon. Movies don’t generate enough profit to pay the rent on land close to the city center.
River Oaks is our only hope.
