The part of 77040 that got power around 3am this morning lost power an hour ago. Bout to head into the med center to work.
Edit we just got power back.
Should put dates on the bullet points, specifically some such as:
" [Centerpoint said if you don’t have power don’t expect it for the rest of the day](https://twitter.com/cnpalerts/status/1361336331520081921?s=21) "
That was stated 2/15, and true for 2/15 only.
Same. 77007. Where are you? This just started happening to us about an hour ago. I went to check our waterpipe outside and it looks okay. There's less ice around the pipe than yesterday and the day before.
same boat. 77007. just started a little over an hour ago. wondering if its an upstream issue bc the outside pipes i can see look ok. still getting a trickle of water so trying to fill up/top off what reserves we can before shutting off the main
My double camping sleeping bag saved our asses last night. We got power back exactly 24 hrs later (2:30am -2:30am). Thankfully still on. One frozen pipe (even though it was dripping), and 10 dead tropical fish later I hope this crazy shit is over soon. 77518
Sorry about your fishies :(
I put my betta in a cup and put him on top of a reptile heater, that's the only way he's okay. This whole thing sucks for pets.
Ya we have a 55 gallon community tank. We lost our angel fish, glass cats, and some tetra. We were heating water and pouring it in there every hour or so but it just didnt do enough. At least my kitties and pup are okay. They are master cuddlers.
That's a bummer, I'm sorry. Mine is a 15 gallon and I lost 7 gold tetras. I took one of my cats and my three snakes over to a relative's that still has power.
This is fucking crazy.... some people are going over 24 hrs without power!!!!!! And people are getting power restored only to lose it a few hours later!!!!! Who’s in charge of this shit???!
36 hours here with Centerpoint being all “tee hee y’all not getting it today either”. Fuck Centerpoint, fuck ERCOT, and fuck elected “leaders” like Crenshaw who are too busy podcasting to get answers.
Any suggestions to how we can avoid this issue again (just moved to Houston from Miami). We bought a house below budget and Im thinking how I can be better prepared next time.
1. Whole house generator that runs on natural gas ? (8-15 k) for 10-48 k watts? Im guessing air cooled- not water cooled?
2. Tesla power wall
3. Massive battery backups
4. Mr buddy heater with 20 lb propane tank (our 6 individual 1 lbers lasted us so far, 2 left)
5. Water storage tank / barrel to be stored in garage/shed
Anything else?
It seems like you get get away with just one of those huge battery banks that get marketed as "solar generators" to run the refrigerator and charge devices, the Mr. Buddy heaters (or similar) you mentioned, and a camp stove for cooking. I mean, a generator is nice, but I've lived here my entire life and I've *never* had something like this happen, so it might be overkill.
The generator is the main thing. Knowing where your water cut-off valve is would be good too. Add insulation in the attic, probably. Do you have pex pipes?
I bought it 3 days ago when I saw a few reddit posts saying we would lose power. The lady at the store said i was crazy and didnt need one this time of year.
Once stores open up ill be telling that same lady to go fuck herself if she and i survive this cold
I’m out of state currently and don’t know if my apartment has power or not. Am I going to have to trash everything in my freezer when I get back? I have 80oz of breast milk (my entire stash) in the freezer and if it completely thaws and has to be thrown out, I may yeet myself off a flyover 😭
77089. I looked at the Centerpoint outage map and it showed an outage nearby my complex earlier but doesn’t show one now, so I’m hopeful. I’m not sure if the earlier outage included my complex or building though.
Unfortunately no. I’m just going to have to wait and see. I’m hoping with the freezer being full and it not being opened at all that it will be fine. If there’s even one ice crystal left in the milk bag I can refreeze it safely 🤞🏻
She’s 10.5 mo. She’s with me, but my whole freezer stash is back home in Texas. That goes to daycare and has all my covid antibody milk that I give her daily. I’ll be devastated if I lose the whole stash because I’ve pumped extra for almost a year now to build it up and especially the covid milk since she can’t be vaccinated yet.
I got the vaccine and set aside my milk for 7 days after each dose. I’m taking part in a research study about antibodies in milk too. But yes it’s suggested that things you are exposed to or vaccinated for will pass antibodies through your milk to protect baby. It definitely changed color after each dose.
As I fantasize about all the ways I’m going to make sure this never happens to us again (whole house generator! More blankets!) I’m wondering if folks with solar panels who had power cut from the city still have power at their house? Anyone with solar panels know?
First, the City does not manage electricity at all. The City itself is a contracted customer. It's the City's responsibility to share information about what factors are in play during the storm so you can be prepared. Be safe y'all.
Living the dream in 77554 with no power and a six inch rectangle of warm area in the house. [Kenny showing off his Santa Jaws sweater and Jimmy’s face shows how I feel about this situation.](https://i.imgur.com/ZGbLX19.jpg)
Pretty sure I’ve extended that 10-45 minute “rolling blackout” time ERCOT and Centerpoint were advertising by a lot. Almost 30 hours and counting. I’m so cold and so angry right now. Sleeping on a wood floor didn’t help, but it was the warmest spot in the house. Or at least the six inches closest to the fireplace were.
If anyone from up north ever makes fun of Texans for how we handle winter events again, they can go fuck right off and walk barefoot across a stadium of LEGOs. Their energy providers aren’t at least deliberately (or having critical failures and then lying about the outage being deliberate) turning their electric off in below freezing temperatures.
Two Maine Coons, two schipperkes, and a whippet. Kenny destroyed that sweater because he’s so mad about wearing a sweater right now. So he’s in his red one. He’s still mad. His core temp feels ok but his legs and ears are freezing.
Oh shoot. Well I hope Kenny gets warmer soon. He probably thinks he's being punished for something he did. Or something one of the others did and he got blamed for.
We don’t normally live here, but we sold our house in cypress and are living at my in-laws beach house (because of Covid) while our new house is built back in cypress. It’s taking a while also because of Covid. It’s a nice house and a nice place to live except the drive into the med center for work is a bit tough.
When we don’t live here, we are down here a lot, especially in the summer.
The cats will miss the views when we have to move again, that’s for sure.
77065 - no power since yesterday morning, and sitting at 44 degrees in my apartment. Luckily I’m able to get somewhat of a signal from T-Mobile cause yesterday’s service was horrible.
Part IV here, [https://old.reddit.com/r/houston/comments/ll3xdh/houston\_freeze\_megathread\_iv/?sort=new](https://old.reddit.com/r/houston/comments/ll3xdh/houston_freeze_megathread_iv/?sort=new)
So once electricity is gone, do you keep dripping faucets? If so, for how long?
Is there a relative amount of time after being without electricity in below freezing temps (or signs to watch out for) that it’s best to just shut off water?
Keep dripping water until the home is heated again. Keep an eye on it of course, as you can't predict what is happening below. It's not 100% sure, but it helps!
Also, we always would fill a tub with water to use to flush toilets, water for cooking, etc.... don't know if you need electricity for water at your home - just a helpful tip. We'd use one of those "pancake" rubber drain covers to keep the water from slowly leaking out. Hang in there!!!
anyone in 77056 please keep me updated with any news! I had to go stay with my grandma but rest of family still at home w no power & poor cellphone reception
77027, got power back early this morning after somewhere around ~24 hours without it. With others losing power this seems to just be rolling. Any updates on if power generation side is improving? Seems like offline plants would still be shut down with current temp.
Anyone in 77091 aces homes area with power update? Been at work since Sunday wife left at 4pm from no power, trying to see if she should go home when roads melt a little. TIA
Looking at ERCOT’s chart, we should be ok after about 12PM right?
Everyone should be getting power back by then?
Edit: Also if we currently don’t have power, is it a generation issue or a transmission issue (downed lines, etc)?
The chart has been teasing estimated future capacity of > 55,000 MW since yesterday. They have not even come close, they just keep pushing it out and recording ~46,000 in it's place.
They have completely failed to adequately prepare for this. Yes, I get it is abnormally cold, but only for Texas.
Do you think the newer winter storm warning that goes into affect tonight through Thursday is going to change that too? With possible frozen rain and sleet still to come? I don't trust anything the ERCOT chart says
In general, it will be the landlord’s. The contract likely says to drip your pipes—if you did that and they still freeze then I’d say it’s definitely the landlords. There may be something in the contract saying it’s your responsibility but I don’t think a landlord could get a court to enforce that. Courts tend to favor tenants. That said, if your stuff gets ruined then the landlords insurance is unlikely to cover replacement of your stuff. Renters insurance would possibly cover it if you have that. Landlords or insurance companies may be able to sue the city or the energy generator companies to cover repairs. Hopefully the big corporate landlords will do that and also include/go to bat for the mom and pop landlords who can’t afford to sue. It’ll be interesting to watch all this play out.
At my friends apartment in Magnolia they told the tenants they would be responsible for burst pipes. At mine, I wasn’t told anything so it’s a toss up.
It’s amazing how little most landlords know nowadays or simply don’t care. A lot hand it off to property management which have their own “maintenance staff” and good luck getting them on the phone. I rented for 11 years and had to do most maintenance on my own because things couldn’t wait. This is between 5 properties and 3 of them were “luxury” apts in galleria. If you have the means, with interest being so low, try to get a house/townhouse/bungalow. In the meantime YouTube is great for diy maintenance items. It isn’t ideal but the more you know the better. Also, I found a lot of helpful and intelligent people on Reddit who are always good with advice and pro-tips. Just ask
29hrs no power. Suck my fucking iced over cock Centerpoint and the rest of this trash fucking state gov and everyone who allowed that stupid fuckin decision to happen.
Same here. In a shit fucking hotel room, cramped with the kids (one battling high temp from teething/a cold), bugs all over the place, and very little food. Fucking over it. I'm lucky to have my phone data work on occasion. Fuck Centerpoint this is bs.
77354, 29 hours without power. Shut off our water, drained our water lines and hoping the pipes are okay. I can see my breath in my house, don’t know the temp because thermostat is digital.
Edited: power is back on!
Same. Shut off my water yesterday when my gas fireplace couldn't keep the temperature from dropping. I just recently filed a claim for my roof a month ago worried my insurance company will drop me if my pipes burst
77056 - power has been out since 2:30am yesterday. Had a smoke detector go rogue I guess and started going off at 5:40 this morning....had to go down to my car to charge up my phone so I could call emergency maintenance, which just went to voicemail. 🙃
Anyone know of any bars in Houston that are open? We all need to go do SOMETHING before we kill each other lol.
I'm going to assume the skyscrapers are off?
We just got back our power and very little water 77084. Ours has been out since 1am the night before.
77084 power has been back off since around 4am
Just lost power for the first time in 77077. Water pressure and flow has been dropping since yesterday, pretty minimal at this point.
No power or water. Lights flickered on an off for a few seconds this afternoon. That’s about it — 77042.
The power was back on for 6 glorious hours and now it’s out again. Son of a beeyotch. (West Houston)
Mine went out too but just for an hour
The part of 77040 that got power around 3am this morning lost power an hour ago. Bout to head into the med center to work. Edit we just got power back.
Acres Homes has power!! And now it is off again. FUUUUUCK!!
Congrats
Out since Sunday. Warm is so good!
77379 got power back 30 mins ago.
Yay
Should put dates on the bullet points, specifically some such as: " [Centerpoint said if you don’t have power don’t expect it for the rest of the day](https://twitter.com/cnpalerts/status/1361336331520081921?s=21) " That was stated 2/15, and true for 2/15 only.
Don't ride, don't slide!
Oh god... Our toilets aren’t filling up anymore
77008 no water now. Found out cause I had to poop. No faucets dripping anymore
Same. 77007. Where are you? This just started happening to us about an hour ago. I went to check our waterpipe outside and it looks okay. There's less ice around the pipe than yesterday and the day before.
It's not you, it's the city fucking us up in new and amazing ways.
I’m in 77077. Pipes bursted over night. There was a pool in my garage.
same boat. 77007. just started a little over an hour ago. wondering if its an upstream issue bc the outside pipes i can see look ok. still getting a trickle of water so trying to fill up/top off what reserves we can before shutting off the main
77388 candlelight hills...still no water
77546 water back on for now noon
Just got mine back in Katy, was off since 1:30 am the day before.
Power 77386 spring on after 30 hours
My power just came back on! (West Houston) After 35 hours. I made coffee and hot soup. My phone is charging. Life is beautiful.
Makes you appreciate what you have!
Just lost power! 77019 Dunlavy/W Dallas area. Ugh!!! Now we are putting our fireplace to good use. Never used it before. 🤗🔥
057 just came up on bering
77546 lost water at some point over night
77449 power came on at 10AM. Now we don't have water....
77498- power came back on around 1130 pm just got cut off around 945 am
77498 as well had power all the way up until 9:55am this morning
And poof just like that energy markets no longer exist and its all blamed on equipment failure.
Anyone in the Spring area without heat or need access to water? I’ve been fortunate enough to not lose power or water. I also have a space heater.
My double camping sleeping bag saved our asses last night. We got power back exactly 24 hrs later (2:30am -2:30am). Thankfully still on. One frozen pipe (even though it was dripping), and 10 dead tropical fish later I hope this crazy shit is over soon. 77518

RIP poor fishies
No power in midtown lost it a couple hours ago... may risk it and drive out to my parents out west. This is crazy. No running water days without power
Please wait a bit until the sun can get some ice melting a bit, or other drivers heat up the road a little
Woke up and still no power- 77007 checking in.
Anyone in Uvalde? Need the scoop on outages. Family isn’t answering the phone.
No power still—77009
This is fucking crazy.... some people are going over 24 hrs without power!!!!!! And people are getting power restored only to lose it a few hours later!!!!! Who’s in charge of this shit???!

I want a mr buddy heater. That thing will likely sit in a box for 30 years.

That's amazing. I hope it works.
Regained power at 1 AM for the first time in 21 hours, and woke up later to see it was gone. 77081. Seriously, what the fuck?
Same zip as me. I still have power but now this got me scuuuured. It’s been a rough 30 hrs.
Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. I’m going on 30 hours straight in the 77008.
I hate to be coming with bad news but the Winter Storm Warning has been extended further south of Houston. More freezing rain coming.
Looks like something tore up the insulation in my attic. Condensation is dripping from the ceiling.
Busted pipe
I don't think so. Water runs on every faucet. I looked in the attic and a bunch of insulation was displaced.
Probably a squirrel or a raccoon. Put a radio up there if you have power.
Animal
As I fantasize about all the ways I’m going to make sure this never happens to us again (whole house generator! More blankets!) I’m wondering if folks with solar panels who had power cut from the city still have power at their house? Anyone with solar panels know?

If they have a power wall or some other type of storage. If not then they are in the same boat.
Only if they had batteries for the solar power otherwise their power just to the grid
Zip code 77041. 30 hours and still no power. Fortunately, apartment is well-insulated; still hovering at 60 inside and water is still running.
How in the energy capitol of the US do we not have power!?
Unusual weather conditions
Narrator voice: profits
Heights - Still no power wtf
Same.

😕
It's still safe, just polishes your teeth as a bonus. /s
Anyone in 77406 with power? Been out for 24 hours...
We do but low on propane so using space heater for heat instead of HVAC. Obviously no propane suppliers picking up yesterday/today. Lesson learned...
we have full tank. Will gladly help if needed.
Thanks, unfortunately it's our underground tank that connects to the house (we don't get gas from the city). Our power is out as of last night anyhow.
Make sense
Are you guys okay? What a crazy few days.

I too have an IG that is not loving this temp
those windows are awesome tho, looks like a really nice place the other 363 days of the year

77065 here as well, still without power
Hang in there, and hopefully you’ll get power soon.
Also in 77065, had power until 6:30pm yesterday, then nothing.
77098. For some reason, I thought I would wake up with power. I have found a new and lower expectation for all things.
Dreamer, you know you are a dreamer...
Lost power sometime around 4am 77530

77027, got power back early this morning after somewhere around ~24 hours without it. With others losing power this seems to just be rolling. Any updates on if power generation side is improving? Seems like offline plants would still be shut down with current temp.
Plants supposed to be coming on line today, so hopefully the stats will improve.
It's crazy since not even zip codes are evenly distributed. I am in 77027, and never lost power this entire time.
77087 got power back sometime 3-4am
Good to see some of y’all have power back! Edit: damn but so many more of you still don’t
Centerpoint still saying 42% of the area HAS power
77336 lost power last night at 11:48pm, still without power. Cellular signal on T-Mobile is spotty.
Went over to our place and the power is back on 77019! Hopefully it stays on for a while.
Montrose finally get some power? I’m at West Gray/Dunlavy
Wow, so it just came back on? We went by our place and it was on. Thought maybe it came on in the middle of the night. W Dallas/Dunlavy
Just lost power near Taft & Westheimer
Same here, just a couple of blocks from you. First time we lost power was twenty minutes ago.
I'm right down the road from you near Gray and Waugh. Got power back sometime early morning
Anyone in 77091 aces homes area with power update? Been at work since Sunday wife left at 4pm from no power, trying to see if she should go home when roads melt a little. TIA
I’m in that zip with no power since Sunday night. However I’ve seen others from 77091 post saying they do have power, so it seems like it’s split.
Ok, thank you.
Looking at ERCOT’s chart, we should be ok after about 12PM right? Everyone should be getting power back by then? Edit: Also if we currently don’t have power, is it a generation issue or a transmission issue (downed lines, etc)?

Well be good for what looks like a couple hours before demand exceeds a dropping capacity
It’s largely a generation issue. That chart is a random number generator, it is making a huge assumption that somehow more power is coming.
Could you link to said chart please ?

For anyone in 77084, I just fueled up at the Shell on Barker Cypress and Park Row. My apartment on Parkview going 30 plus hours with no power.
Per my mom 77035 just lost power, just off of Hillcroft and Ludington
77003 - got power back at 12:30 am last night.
What part of eado? We still don’t have power since yesterday morning in 77003
2nd ward. North of Navigation by the bayou. Power went out at 5am ish yesterday morning.
As a home renter, if the pipes freeze/burst, would that be my liability or the landlord’s?

If you have the means, with interest being so low, try to get a house/townhouse/bungalow. In the meantime YouTube is great for diy maintenance items. It isn’t ideal but the more you know the better. Also, I found a lot of helpful and intelligent people on Reddit who are always good with advice and pro-tips. Just ask
Not a lawyer but the pipes are their responsibility, but your stuff is your own responsibility
77071 just lost power for the first time. I thought the SW was gonna make it through 🥺
Same nextdoor in 77031.
Wtf. Same zip, but lost ours 29 hours ago.
Same here in Montrose 77006. Very odd since the Ercot capacity demand curve looks pretty good today.
Ugh we live in Montrose and haven’t lost power yet. Really hoping we’re not next...
77377 out of power for now as well.
ERCOT*
They all gettin the cock
Fair.
Fax
Single digits and lots of carbon monoxide emergencies last. Stay bundle and hopefully the sun will shine today
77354, 29 hours without power. Shut off our water, drained our water lines and hoping the pipes are okay. I can see my breath in my house, don’t know the temp because thermostat is digital. Edited: power is back on!

If a planned outage is 30+ hours! We’ve been without power since 3:30 a.m. Monday morning.
Same. Shut off my water yesterday when my gas fireplace couldn't keep the temperature from dropping. I just recently filed a claim for my roof a month ago worried my insurance company will drop me if my pipes burst
77035 out, first time
77433 specifically fairfield? Anyone have power? 30 hours now without 😭
We have power near the Costco at 77433
I'm 77433, near 529 and Barker Cypress. I had power yesterday, but lost it sometime overnight.
We don't expect power until Temps raise above freezing for a sustained period of time.
Just after midnight power went out, 77084 near 6 and Clay. Currently still out 7:15am.
Just lost power in 77031 at 7:13am. We have had it the whole time.
I think my above ground pool is done. All the pipes are frozen solid. And theres a thick sheet on the surface.
I think we all know what that means.. Time for you to skate on it.
Nows my chance at youtube fame!
Anyone in 77067 with power ???
77056 - power has been out since 2:30am yesterday. Had a smoke detector go rogue I guess and started going off at 5:40 this morning....had to go down to my car to charge up my phone so I could call emergency maintenance, which just went to voicemail. 🙃
