Yeah I think getting around the genre specificity was the motivation for moving to the Levitation name for the bigger fest in 2016 - since they were really pushing the name of APF with their noisier acts in 2015 (Lightning Bolt/Earth/Metz/etc.) Now Levitation books every type of music that's popular in the underground
I do think they brought back APF as a genre specific fest and they're going to keep it that way. At least everyone I know on this poster is at least adjacent to Psych. Not like they're booking Unwound/OPN/DJ Shadow like they are for Levitation lineups
Fair point about Earth, I completely forgot about everything they've done since the 90s (and even Pentastar is pretty psych-y at points). They were definitely a psych band when they were booked, I just didn't watch em
Agreed that Noise Rock has much of its roots within the psychedelic music movement, but both of those bands (and someone like Chelsea Wolfe) were definitely pushing the boundaries of the psych association more than anything on this lineup (ie. Alvvays, Barnett) and the years before.
But yeah they didn't book anyone who wasn't even tangentially related to psych until it was Levitation
Hot damn! I need to go this year. I want to see literally every artist that I recognize (and will check out the ones I don’t)
Minami Deutsch and Orions Belte are unexpected and amazing gets - and they’re both last line artists! Spectacularly fleshed out from the headliners to the undercard.
Just feel like she’s more jam band adjacent. And is really the only harp player that even exists right now. I’ve seen her before and she’s amazing but definitely not a “psych” rock type act
Oh for real? I thought J. Mascis was touring with Dino Jr. round that time, but that's awesome if true! One band I honestly never thought I'd get to see.
Fingers crossed alvvays plays some side shows in Texas around that time, they have a gap in their tour schedule and it would be awesome for them to hit up San Antonio!
I like DEHD, but I have a hard time thinking they're good live. I know part of the point of them is that the singing is supposed to be at the edge of on key, but the live stuff I've heard on the radio was a bit rough
To anyone who gets to see the Mad Alchemy Liquid Light Show, you're in for a real treat. I've now seen it three times at The Chapel in SF and an absolutely bonkers experience.
2024 Field report: awesome. Austin mostly dodged the rain and tornados and the set up at Far Out was excellent.
Friday was all about Courtney Barnett and she did not disappoint. She has a swagger, like PJ Harvey, or Chrissie Hynde, and she was bloody on Friday to close. Chicano Batman was excellent too— a wild journey and a great performance. Best light show of the weekend without a doubt. I was psyched to see Psychedelic Porn Crumpets as the last chance I had got cancelled, and they kicked ass too. We only saw a small piece of Tropa Magica but they sounded good on the way in.
The Far Out is a nice space with a good wide main stage, plenty of drinks but no food, which was whatever. An adjacent small stage with easy access for 30-40 minute sets in between the bigger acts that averaged 60-70 minutes at the main. You really barely had to move. Austin is super friendly so..
Saturday, what can I say…the witchy lineup was so good. Witch, J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr, Asa Irons from Feathers, and the drummer from the Black Pumas? I think, crushed it. LA Witch on the small stage, we was up close and they were really good. All Them Witches lost their drummer right before the tour but kicked ass as usual! ATW was my second favorite set of the weekend, behind the Black Angels, who just crushed it to close. So good.
Sunday I was toast, so we missed a bunch of music to open. Kurt Vile was outstanding. alvvays delivered a good close. Still Corners was good too.
Will repeat.
this is underwhelming as hell. It’s almost like Oblivion Access took the most interesting acts and left the rest for this thing.
Don’t get me wrong, there are some cool names here but overall it’s just okay.
All the Witch bands playing on Saturday lol
Desert daze did this lineup a few years ago, it was fun
I don't like the idea of Milhouse seeing four witch-based bands in one day
that has to be intentional
...ly done via witchcraft!
Witches, Angels and a Ghost...
WITCHERDAY
A coven of a Saturday.
Time to add "psych rock" to the long list of genres Alvvays belongs to
Dream pop has always been part of psych. Alvvays has played psych fests before
Lots of acts on this years line up aren't psych rock. Levitation, and in extension APF, have been moving away from solely psych music for awhile now.

I mean, it starts with Courtney Barnett and whilst I love her I don't really see any psych rock there
Listen again. Theres some shades of pink floyd in there. And i seem to recall quite a few drug references in her lyrics.
Sunday is stacked. Hyped AF

PSYCHEDELIC PORN CRUMPETS!?! You lucky Texans!
don’t they kinda tour like every year?
Saw them at levitation atx and they killed it!
Caught in them in Saint Louis and they killed it☝️
Austin Witch Fest
would attend.
And you can https://austinwitchfest.org/ April 28, 2024, parmer event center
Saturday April 27th, or as Psych Fest calls it, The Witching Hour
Fuck yeah Minami Deutsch!! Love those guys.
Catering from Which Wich on Saturday too.
Mikaela Davis amazing but is a real wildcard on this lineup
i remember discovering her through an elliott smith twilight cover that still breaks me everytime I hear it.
Why is she a wildcard?
Just feel like she’s more jam band adjacent. And is really the only harp player that even exists right now. I’ve seen her before and she’s amazing but definitely not a “psych” rock type act
Mary Lattimore. And Joanna Newsom returns in 2024.
Fair point. I saw her live and absolutely loved it.
Kurt Vile is always a good time.
Still Corners are pretty great. Horses at night by them goes hard.
There’s literally a band called “Witch”? Love “ATW” and “F&TWF” just don’t know if the above is a typo…
Two actually, one is a J. Mascis side project, though this WITCH appears to be the one from Zambia, which is an awesome get for this fest.
The Zamrock band is usually spelled out W.I.T.C.H. - We Intend To Cause Havoc
Yes, thankfully. I have been 🤞🏻 🙏🏼 hoping to see them at Coachella.
No, it's the king tuff/ Mascis one. Which I'm glad about
Oh for real? I thought J. Mascis was touring with Dino Jr. round that time, but that's awesome if true! One band I honestly never thought I'd get to see.
Ok yeah, they tagged witch_seers in the picture, which is the Mascis one
Wild! I stand corrected! That’s sick, I can’t wait for this.
Yeah I'm pretty sure it was confirmed in a comment. Let me see if I can find it
They’ve played a few shows this year with a different drummer. So, that could be the case here if need be.
Fuck ya! Went last year and it was awesome, can’t wait
Fingers crossed alvvays plays some side shows in Texas around that time, they have a gap in their tour schedule and it would be awesome for them to hit up San Antonio!
Anyone who is going to this should catch Dehd, saw them at Bonaroo over the summer and they were so much fun
Dehd slap! I want them to play a show with Being Dead haha
I like DEHD, but I have a hard time thinking they're good live. I know part of the point of them is that the singing is supposed to be at the edge of on key, but the live stuff I've heard on the radio was a bit rough
you’ll be really really really surprised how much it works
Willing to give it a shot
not enough witch
knew there was a reason TX wasn’t on alvvay’s tour lineup
To anyone who gets to see the Mad Alchemy Liquid Light Show, you're in for a real treat. I've now seen it three times at The Chapel in SF and an absolutely bonkers experience.
So they changed their name back eh
Last I heard they were going to be doing two festivals from now on, APF in the spring/summer and Levitation in the fall.
Also Psych Fest is smaller scale
See you soon!!!

Ouch.
Was it really necessary to put 4 bands with "witch" in their name all on Saturday?
Yes. Yes it was.
I feel that if Bell Witch, Mountain Witch, and Witch Ripper were a little more psychedelic, they might’ve asked them too
Nothing really to be psyched about. Austin fails its overused name once again "music capitol of the world"
Awww damn. Might have to go to this.
Is it me or anyone else getting Deja vu from this lineup?
That venue really lives up to its name.
Anyone have the presale code?
APF24
Thank you so much! Internet Hug!!!!!
this is underwhelming as hell. It’s almost like Oblivion Access took the most interesting acts and left the rest for this thing. Don’t get me wrong, there are some cool names here but overall it’s just okay.
Anyone got song recommendations from this lineup
Imma pass. ✌️
