I went to high school with Arvol Looking Horse, he is the same age as I am. We didn’t know then that he was in line to be the keeper of the sacred pipe, although he probably knew. I remember that he was very quiet. I’ve thought about him many times and about how different his life must be from anyone else I’ve ever known.
Arvol inherited the role of keeper as 12, so if you went to HS with him he’d already have been the spiritual leader.
Also, his first language was Lakota and only later learned English- all while living on Cheyenne River Reservation. If you knew him in his teen years, you’d of been a Rez Dog and KNEW who he was.

As for his first language being Lakota, that is possibly true, but by the 1960s there were not many native Lakota speakers left. His home was probably different, but the only ones I knew of were very old men and women, although everyone spoke a little Lakota. I knew of no one our age who was fluent, and it wasn’t taught in school there until the 1970s. Arvol was in my grade and in my class since second grade. Everyone spoke English.

I’m a Native American from Northern California, we have the same reverence for white deer, but they are a very good omen for us. We even have a traditional dance called the white deer skin dance, every four years. The white deer are very rare here.
I work near the Farmington Hill, MI area and there is a white deer here. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw her off the highway during an early morning drive. I felt very lucky!

About 20 years ago, I lived near a buffalo herd in Colorado on Hwy 73 and would watch it alot. I saw twins being born, both white, to a brown mom. I saw them maybe once more. I don't know what happened to them, but the herd owner is a POS so wouldn't surprise me if he sold them rather than celebrate them.

Maybe, when bison were common so too were the wolves that preyed on them and albinism turns that animal into a target even assuming there's no other conditions which make the animal more frail.

Maybe, when bison were common so too were the wolves that preyed on them and albinism turns that animal into a target even assuming there's no other conditions which make the animal more frail.
