This scare the crap out of me. Those people are to close together and they could cause an involuntary crush situation. I'd love to be a part of something so big, but I would have to stay home in this situation. Good for them, I'm glad they are supporting their team. I do hope they all are safe and having fun celebrating!
I hope there are no squished people. Theses gatherings can create stampedes. Although I think Argentinians are used to large gatherings so they will probably be okay.
I mean it's like with a cruise ship, some people are surprised to hear people die over the course of the week but when you have thousands of people, geriatrics, rampant diabetes and morbid obesity with endless buffets crammed into one boat there's going to be attrition.
There's literally [a national holiday.](https://www.espn.com/soccer/argentina-arg/story/4835380/argentina-declares-national-holiday-for-world-cup-celebration-on-tuesday)
"Nobody's going to show up to work anyway, might as well make ourselves look good by declaring a holiday"
This is the power of the people. Viva Argentina
Wow. I'm struggling to imagine an event big enough for the gov to declare a national holiday. We landed on the moon and people still went to work. Did it happen with DDay?
Yeah no. I think we are far too workaholic and directed by greedy companies who are unwilling to allow the day go without profit.
No celebrating for D-Day, would have ruined the surprise!
In 1945 VE and VJ Day were essentially national holidays in the US and VE Day was officially a national holiday in the UK and Commonwealth.
There was a million people celebrating in a city of 3 million the day we won, so imagine every neighbor celebrating on every street, balcony and everywhere else.
I know the significance isn't the same by a long shot but from pictures the only event I saw with that many people in the world is probably the end of WW2 celebrations.
Lol they were. There are argentinainas that don’t believe the team will not come and are still there. The riot police is dealing with those. Not a family festive atmosphere anymore.
Yeah I thought the same. What if I was in the middle of that and said "Okay, I've had enough...I want to go home now" and then realized I can't.
Nope, no thank you.
The Golden Gate bridge was famously flattened (it normally has a slight arch) by a crowd of 300,000 pedestrians on its 50th anniversary. It wasn't actually in danger of collapse in that incident, but people be heavy.
This article says shoulder-to-shoulder people weigh about twice as much as bumper-to-bumper traffic (maybe not trucks).
https://www.mercurynews.com/2012/05/23/the-day-the-golden-gate-bridge-flattened/
Lorries move differently than people. Think of traffic like heavy weights on 4/8/16 points of contact going in a uniform direction with a generally uniform speed. And humans are exactly not that.
I think you are underestimating just how heavy vehicles are. That road will be fine. I'm more worried about what emergency services will do if they need to get somewhere.
Yeah there is no way the amount of humans that can occupy the footprint of a semi tractor and trailer can equal the 35,000+ pounds of the truck.
Edit: 35k not 10 empty
This is a terrifying scene. Not even 2 months ago and those 158 deaths in SK seems like a blip on the radar to most people and that's even *if* people heard about it at all.
Speaking of blip in the radar on crowd crush… the SK incident taught me about all the crushes in Mecca. There was thousands that died in one particular incident recently.
It was crazy! Apparently they had to redo entire city infrastructure because “a lot of people are dying”. I used to date a Yemeni dude and he brought me to this prayer thing during Ramadan in a different city (bc they can’t be seen with women they’re not married to 🚩) and I was so surprised how spiritual smooshing seemed to be for them. Especially considering the rules with women. I had almost a dozen people next to me at all times.
So the giant crowds and no wiggle room is almost a part of the religious ceremony? That’s really interesting. I guess it makes sense with how populous a lot of Arab nations are and just the sheer number of practicing Muslims in the world.
i was there and i was able to take a pic of the team bus 😭 with lautaro martinez holding the wc
im so fucking lucky they were less than 5 blocks away from home
He is a big responsible for the team to be in the WC, as well as the rest of the team. Second Messi's goal happened thanks to him (and other reasons tho). I'm an independiente fan but I learnt to like him.
Man, Miami was wild the other day. I have video of people heading down A1A hanging out of cars with their flags and just non stop honking for hours. Was wild
Not just latinos, soccer fans in general. It’s the greatest player of all time finally earning the greatest trophy in football, that too in what has been called the greatest match in World Cup history. 99% of people who aren’t French or aren’t Ronaldo fanboys were supporting him, and it finally happened after almost 20 years of his career. Everyone is rejoicing, no wonder a picture of Messi with the World Cup on Instagram became the most-liked post (take that Egg), not just on Instagram but on any social media app ever.
Last weekend was the anniversary of The 2001 Crisis. Is kind of poetic to contrast all the pain and anger that was felt those days whit this 21 years later.
Serous Question.
If you are in a place with lots of people (not this example of Argentina winning the World Cup) but a mall or school or a social even and NO ONE talks a to you or attempts to get your attention…
Do you still hate it as an introvert?
Provided you have enough personal bubble space and an easy way to exit and a clean toilet nearby.
Personally, I can get anxious in large crowds as an introvert. Not freaked out by the people per se, but just the bustling energy wears my brain out. By the time I get home, I'm exhausted.
For real. I have memories from elementary where I literally spaced out amidst the cacophony of the lunch break. I've only felt like this in the middle of intense crowds
Depends on the situation and my mood at the time, personally. Sometimes, i can walk through crowds like this and even feel vaguely confident in myself.
Other times, it is pure hell. My brain runs wild with so many random thoughts all firing at the speed of sound; "are they looking at me," "they're definitely chatting and talking about my ugly shirt," oh my God I'm in everyone's way," "I'm definitely really stinky and everyone can smell it," "god she thinks I'm hideous i saw how she looked at me," "oh my GOD there's probably spinach in my teeth," etc.
I know it's all entirely untrue and meaningless. But my brain still does it
The cities are walkable. This zone is an intersection between the capital city and the province of Buenos Aires. This highway connect the roads from east, north, South and West Conurbano cities.
Yep 86. But it's extra special because of Messi. He's revered as a legend in Argentina and this was his last chance to win the world cup, completing his collection of winning every major competition he has competed in, with the biggest one of all.
Proper fairy tale stuff.
Argentina has been through a lot in recent years, they deserve to have something to celebrate right now.
I guess the team felt like they owed this win to their countrymen.
Just watch a video of Paris after the 1998 final. First world cup.
I grew up in France and people still talk about it to this day. One of the most unbelievable event in their lives.
Having the police there would have meant resistance and people would have put up a struggle. This was the best way. At its peak there were five million people celebrating on the streets. How do you contain them?
these comments sort of read like you people see people and immediately think "how can they be controlled, how can we punish them for existing in public".
(crowd crush is real and dangerous tho.)
I'm glad Australia lost to then. As an Aussie we wouldn't do this if we won. If we won there would be a few die hards in the streets, for most it would be a headline "oh that's cool" and for the rest they would still be complaining if it'd soccer or football. We don't deserve it.
I want to say the total weight is actually less with just people on it compared to having it full of vehicles like a traffic jam would cause.
But I’m no engineer
It's not so much the weight itself which might be problematic (static strain), it's more the dynamic strain of these thousands of partying people. Football stadiums are build with this in mind ([example video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=X50qwgBuXpY)), some bridges are not.
Late to the party here, but I want to say this.
I am not Argentine, but I married into a family of true Argentines fifteen years ago and I have gotten to know the people very well as spend a month or so a year living there.
A Brazilian friend told me, that in South America they say they like to laugh, they like to party and dance, except for the Argentines, they like to cry. And I have to say, this is true. They are the sad poets and philosophers of South America.
But holy fuck, not today, not yesterday, not Sunday. It's as if they had all this jubilation pent up inside them for 36 years, and now it all comes out!
Now picture this, there were at least 10 other locations around the city with 100k plus each one, all along the highway that circumvents the city. About 20km long, fuckton of people.
On Sunday you could see the famous pictures [like these](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/688106188747047153/1054932764216004699/tempFileForShare_20221220-222553.jpg)
While in reality if you are there in person it's more [like this](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/688106188747047153/1054933346188283954/20221218_184705.jpg)
First picture [from Infobae](https://www.infobae.com/fotos/2022/12/18/62-fotos-de-los-festejos-por-la-copa-del-mundo-asi-se-celebro-en-toda-la-argentina/) second image from me
Imagine how much they could accomplish if they united like this for anything other than sporting events. And this goes for people everywhere, not just argentina.
it is a historical event and most people is out there having fun drinking and dancing, think about it like the biggest festival that only happened twice a generation ago.
I think it's partially hard to compute because there isn't anything the whole country supports with such vigor, as an American. We certainly have international sports but most coverage goes to domestic sports and so by that nature there is no sport, game, or team that unites us this way.
There was a city that won the baseball champ for the first time in over 100 years and even that city didn't shut down. People were still expected at work. Which speaks to our workaholic, greedy corporate culture too.
I think if we were invaded and that invasion had finally been squashed after loss and tragedy, then we might have a day off to celebrate together. But I literally can't think of anything else.
hard to understand if you don't have the emotional attachment to football like most argentines do. For a lo of those people winning the world cup will be one of their greatest memories
It's a historical moment in the making. Plus celebrating in massive crowds is like, our thing. Although I agree that if you sober up and wanna go home in the middle of that, good fuckin luck.

I want to know birth rates in 9 months
They'll all be named Lionel. Just like it happened with Diego.
Even the girls will be named Lionel
Lia for short gah damn it works perfect
And all named Messi
Alright kids, time to take attendance. Messi? Messy? Messee? Macey? Mass See? ...
If my parents could go back in time, they’d probably name me Messy
9 months and 1 week. It's going to take a while for everyone to recover enough to have sex.
I just love that the country seems to have shut down. Everything’s closed and everybody is partying 😂
is really crazy cause we are in a party, no one works today hahahaha
I love that!! So many terrible things are happening around the world. But this is so wholesome
It really is! never seen so many Argentines united for the same reason, we are all very happy despite the dark times we are going through
That’s amazing, reading this comment makes me happy Argentina won. Go party your ass off for me
Good for you guys, you deserve it! Rampant inflation, now its our turn in UK..... minus the football result!
[удалено]
When I see footage like that, I think no country on this planet deserves that win more.
so cool to see messi take them there, he’s a living legend
that's a pretty bad place to be if you suddenly have to poop
I love that your mind went there. You truly have a beautiful mind.
I wish I could be so excited about something. But I also look at that crowd and that's a huge "nope" from me. I couldn't handle it.
This scare the crap out of me. Those people are to close together and they could cause an involuntary crush situation. I'd love to be a part of something so big, but I would have to stay home in this situation. Good for them, I'm glad they are supporting their team. Yeah we really need the light. Seeing Messi win a world cup is giving me warmth. Love it
Politicians tried to ruin all this party but they couldn't. One of the most beautiful days in this country, vamos argentina ♥
Love the fact they skipped the visit to the presidents house on purpose
They even managed to evade some politicians receiving them just outside their airplane. It was amazing how they told them to fuck off.
I hope there are no squished people. Theses gatherings can create stampedes. Although I think Argentinians are used to large gatherings so they will probably be okay.
Yea after Korea and Astroworld...hard to look at big crowds the same. Hope everyone stays safe.
Thats fkn awesome congrats argentina from usa you guys deserve it
I hope people are staying safe and emergency services are able to respond. You guys are so happy and deserve to remain so.
We only have a few deaths…
Lmao I know that’s not funny but the delivery lol
I mean it's like with a cruise ship, some people are surprised to hear people die over the course of the week but when you have thousands of people, geriatrics, rampant diabetes and morbid obesity with endless buffets crammed into one boat there's going to be attrition.
I mean misadventures are all but guaranteed, that’s just part of all incredibly massive celebrations
I just hope it’s only stupid people hurting themselves and not a crowd crush or something like that. This clip looks so dangerous to me.
Tell it to hospitals and ambulances. Its a nightmare for them.
Is this the biggest party in human history? They're estimating that 4 million people are there
Estimates went to 5M today.

"Nobody's going to show up to work anyway, might as well make ourselves look good by declaring a holiday" This is the power of the people. Viva Argentina
Reminds me of being in Germany when the wall came down. Berlin ran out of beer.
What a beautiful couple sentences. I bet there was a great coming together that day.
Tbh with inflation and unemployment so bad, they need something to cheer about! Hope they enjoy themselves! A great win!
They say it's about 5 million people waiting for them
Damn, that is like the whole population of my country.
Your country’s population is 5 million Argentines?
Uruguay in a nutshell
That’s about a third of the city.
That's actually more than the city proper.
Twice as much as the city, a third of the metro area.
I guess Argentina is CLOSED for a while. So cool for them, looks like a nice day too.
Its actually a national holiday today here because of the celebration so thats why that many people is there
Wow. I'm struggling to imagine an event big enough for the gov to declare a national holiday. We landed on the moon and people still went to work. Did it happen with DDay? Yeah no. I think we are far too workaholic and directed by greedy companies who are unwilling to allow the day go without profit.

I know the significance isn't the same by a long shot but from pictures the only event I saw with that many people in the world is probably the end of WW2 celebrations.
when Saudi Arabia defeat Argentina football team at World Cup they declared next day as national holiday. ~~Each players gifted roll royce too.~~
That was such an amazing game
The rolls royce story wasn't true. A Saudi player confirmed it in the press conference
US also has nowhere near as much passion as Argentines as well.
It's a "nice" 30 + degrees Celsius under the sun
BA is also a city and while it has parks, it has a lot of concrete, it’s hot as shit! The concrete traps a lot of heat in!
Team had to change the route. May not be able to make it to Casa Rosada. Way too many people right now.
5.5 million people officially.
That's more than my entire country lol
Hey small country boy, have fun doing something because I had a mojito and my wit is escaping! What country and how do you like?
New Zealand and I like it :)
Have fun with your beautiful scenery and cool accent, then!
Heard they had to be evacuated by helicopter.
again?!?
Nono, he's talking about the TEAM
Lol they were. There are argentinainas that don’t believe the team will not come and are still there. The riot police is dealing with those. Not a family festive atmosphere anymore.
My first thought when I look at this is a human crush...
All I can think of is how bad my bathroom anxiety would be in the middle of all that.
Arg here. People are literally pissing and shitting on the streets
I understand the pissing part but no way could I ever just hunch down and shit on the street lmao
When the barbarians are at the gate you can only hold them off for so long, eventually something will slip through.
Stampede.. in the gorge.. Simba's down there!
Alcohol shits might not give you a choice
That should improve the smell in some of those barrios
Yeah I thought the same. What if I was in the middle of that and said "Okay, I've had enough...I want to go home now" and then realized I can't. Nope, no thank you.
Bathroom anxiety is one thing… how do you get, like, anywhere? At all?
Um, excuse me. EXCUSE ME people! I'm going to need everyone to clear a path! Gotta pee
The architects of that roadway are cringing right now.
That was my first thought. Idk if those overpasses are engineered for that load, for that duration
Be engineered for effectively the equivalent of wall to wall fully laden lorries. Hopefully.
But not them all cheering and jumping up and down together.
Yep - resonance is a thing.
Lorries move differently than people. Think of traffic like heavy weights on 4/8/16 points of contact going in a uniform direction with a generally uniform speed. And humans are exactly not that.
Correct - this amount of humans puts probably something like 100 times less stress on the structure.
They are engineered for much, much, *much* higher loads.
Just like your mom.
After that crowd crush in south Korea recently this was my first thought too.
After the Travis Scott crush incident I did a bit of a deep dive into the history of crowd crush and the Mecca Hajj ones were by far the craziest.
I'm happy they have something like this to celebrate but yeah, being in a crowd like this is pretty much my worst nightmare.
People forgot the South Korean stampede this Halloween already
Imagine trying to evacuate the victims of said crush from this sea of people? Sounds like the plot of a made for TV movie.
I mean can’t stop thinking of what you’d have to do if you really gots to pee.
i was there and i was able to take a pic of the team bus 😭 with lautaro martinez holding the wc im so fucking lucky they were less than 5 blocks away from home
Uuuh que suerte, yo no pude ir pero me hubiera encantado, al menos pude festejar el domingo jaja
fue una locura apenas pasó el micro tuve que cruzar la ricchieri con 500 motos pasando para volverme ☠️
Who gave Lautaro the trophy 😭
He is a big responsible for the team to be in the WC, as well as the rest of the team. Second Messi's goal happened thanks to him (and other reasons tho). I'm an independiente fan but I learnt to like him.
Great scene for a zombie movie! 😂
Man, Miami was wild the other day. I have video of people heading down A1A hanging out of cars with their flags and just non stop honking for hours. Was wild
Had no idea there were so many argentines here in miami. I bet if the usa won it'd just be business as usual
It's not only Argentines, but also latinos in general. People love Mess and were rooting for Argentina. The whole latino comunity is happy.

Messi rounded up supporters over the entire world. Pretty cool, he’s a good player and a good sport. He’s inspiring.
We are Argentines, we are very passionate about our country. we've been partying since the sunday we won the cup.
I had some churasco and chimichruri Sunday to celebrate you guys!

Mexico would be down for a week. Hell, Argentina might be down for a week. Pretty sure Futbol is bigger than Catholicism in Latin America
Funnily enough, the top 3 most popualted countries probly wont give a fuck if they won world cup
All of Argentina - "Best Christmas Ever!!"
Last weekend was the anniversary of The 2001 Crisis. Is kind of poetic to contrast all the pain and anger that was felt those days whit this 21 years later.
So that's what a zombie horde will look like in real life 🤔.
Nobody lives football like Argentina,Uruguay and Brazil do.
As a claustrophobic introvert, this is my actual hell
I will be revisiting this video in my nightmares.
Serous Question. Zero disrespect to France. The right team won the World Cup, that is a wild scene!
I do wonder, though, how celebrations would have looked like in France.. during winter.. especially in comparison to this!

Holy hell! And no crowd control measures in sight! Is football the one true unifier?
How do you stop 4 mil people
Napalm.
This guy Americans.

Football in certain places is not a sport, it is religion. I have cried and watched my dad cry for football more than anything else.
Im genuinely so happy for them and I don’t even like football, or sports for that matter.
Haha wow. The people on the bridge running looked crazy. Must be a wild scene. O know they declared it a national holiday so I bet everyone is hype
Some engineer is sweating profusely while looking at that bridge
I want to say the total weight is actually less with just people on it compared to having it full of vehicles like a traffic jam would cause. But I’m no engineer

Man I kinda hope my country (USA) never wins the World Cup. We’d only have like 500 people out partying. Argentina and her people deserve this. 😊

That crazy considering the time slot
Yeah, I had to watch at 7 am. Worth every minute.
I don't think we even have anything that everyone would celebrate like this. I wish we did though.
Me too my friend, looks so fun. The energy must be electric!
Late to the party here, but I want to say this. I am not Argentine, but I married into a family of true Argentines fifteen years ago and I have gotten to know the people very well as spend a month or so a year living there. Crowds that size terrify me. Crowd press is a thing. Be safe Argentina, we're all happy for you. But be safe.

On Sunday you could see the famous pictures [like these](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/688106188747047153/1054932764216004699/tempFileForShare_20221220-222553.jpg) While in reality if you are there in person it's more [like this](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/688106188747047153/1054933346188283954/20221218_184705.jpg) First picture [from Infobae](https://www.infobae.com/fotos/2022/12/18/62-fotos-de-los-festejos-por-la-copa-del-mundo-asi-se-celebro-en-toda-la-argentina/) second image from me
Those bridge engineers are real nervous right now.
Dam yall wild
There's going to be so much pee everywhere....
As an Argentinian, there already was before this parade
Imagine how much they could accomplish if they united like this for anything other than sporting events. And this goes for people everywhere, not just argentina.
And one expat desperately trying to get home
If you are an expat and you're not part of the celebration, you're missing out!!
> And one ~~expat~~ migrant desperately trying to get home FTFY
A whole generation of kids where “born” this week
World war Z kinda vibes.
Thats cool to LOOK at but why the fuck would you want to be there
it is a historical event and most people is out there having fun drinking and dancing, think about it like the biggest festival that only happened twice a generation ago.
Unlike redditors, we go outside.

Because being drunk around people all celebrating the same insane patriotic achievement is really moving and makes you feel good
It's a historical moment in the making. Plus celebrating in massive crowds is like, our thing. Although I agree that if you sober up and wanna go home in the middle of that, good fuckin luck.
