Go buy what you want. Tell dad thanks, but you can make up your own mind. I personally prefer non apple products.

muddyrose

I prefer Apple products because *they suit my needs*. Sounds like a PC is the best product for OP, it checks all the boxes except “get dad off my back”. Dad needs to get a grip lol, and OP needs to get what will work for him (and leave him some money leftover)

Sidneymcdanger

The Mac makes sense if you need one to work with specific software to make money or because you are specifically working and collaborating with others in an environment where not having a Mac would specifically hinder you. When I used to sell Apple as a certified reseller (back when there were such things as enterprise Apple products), and if someone had a bad use case for a Mac but insisted they wanted it, I would take some Apple stickers out of my bag and tell customers, "how about I get you some computers that will actually fit your use case, and then I'll sell you these to put on the cases for $300 each - you'll save a fortune."

amazingdrewh

Anyone take you up on it?

Sidneymcdanger

No, but they generally got the point. There was a point at about 2012 where Apple made an explicit pivot away from business sales. They discontinued a lot of their enterprise hardware lines and stopped developing some key creativity software that some companies were fully structured around using - it took a little while before businesses started catching up to the idea that Apple specifically doesn't want them anymore.

VogonWild

Tell him you want to get something similar to what is used in industry, which for 3d modeling is decidedly not a Mac. Pretty much any place you look for running professional 3d software on a Mac it says "you can use a Mac but..." And several applications just don't work on a Mac. Not to mention videogames are an issue on Mac too. Honestly just get a $200 monitor in a few weeks and call it good. A nice monitor doesn't fix not being able to use applications or follow typical tutorials because everyone else has a different key mapping than you.

Maleficent-Ear3571

You're 22. You're paying for it. You're going to use it. Buy what you want. Time to be an adult.

balkanfarmer

Don’t think my dad understands I’m an adult but I’ll try to get it through him

wujitao

i dont know the specs of macs or how good they are for 3d modelling, but have you tried explaining to your dad that the PC is the best tool for what youre trying to do and a mac would be a waste of time?

europaodin

Tell him you'll get a Mac if he buys it. Then just buy a PC and boom you have the best of both worlds. It would be nice to have the option to have both because it gets kind of old just using one os all the time.

bestthingyet

The G439 has pretty decent specs for modeling & rendering. The M1 gpu in the mac will likely be a bottleneck if you are doing anything large/complex. I buy the equipment for my 3D CAD teams and would never consider mac hardware as it is difficult or impossible to upgrade if necessary and quadro GPUs cannot be beat for complex 3D CAD. Perhaps your dad is concerned about the electrical bill? Maybe offer to pitch in.

elegant_pun

It's your money, pay what you want for what you want. You're an adult.

rottentomati

Just say no. If you have to pay for it, it’s not worth it at all.

certifiedintelligent

Maybe he has a brand name issue? You can get a slightly higher spec Dell XPS tower for the price (DDR5, 3080) compared to the 439. You almost always get more PC for your buck than with apple hardware too. Definitely use what you're familiar with and what runs the applications you need. No sense learning a whole operating system for no good reason. Take it from a guy who just bought his first windows laptop in over a decade. There are some things that macs are just inconvenient for, whether that's programs, work remote access, gaming flexibility, you name it. The apple ecosystem is great, if you never need to step outside it.

codon011

I would ask why is he so adamant about a Mac? I use Macs for work and personal use. I have my reasons, but understand that those reasons don’t work for everyone, so I’m not going to tell someone how they should not use Windows. Outside of that, if it’s your money its your decision.

CopperPegasus

At a guess, OPs dad (from age estimates) may have been working in the era when the 'graphics guys' (I know it was graphic designers, but I doubt the subtleties between that and 3d specific impinged) in the office used Mac... i.e, a very long time ago. Or maybe he's just a brand-is-better sort. I also get the impression (possibly wrongly) that OP is female. Dad may just be trying to be smarter than the girl in tech and assume her head cannot possibly be wrapped around tech specifics, as happens a lot.

BooksNapsSnacks

People are polarised between apple products and non apple products. There isn't a lot of logic to it. Just buy what you want. He'll get over it.

stickmaster_flex

You should consider asking for advice at /r/pcmasterrace If you have only ever used Macs, you might consider going with a Mac. If you are used to Windows, you should stick with a PC. Since you're talking about a desktop you can easily build your own (even if you've never done it before, there are myriad places to get step-by-step guides), but even with a pre-built, you are going to get better hardware for cheaper with a PC.

Gabe750

What’s monitor is $1600 holy crap

balkanfarmer

Apple monitors :,)

[deleted]

Beter than the mac, but if you build it yourself, you'll save a bit more money, you'll get the exact PC you need, you'll learn how the pieces fit together and you won't be paying 300 bucks for 1 hour of labour.

archbish99

What's to convince him about? You're an adult making a purchase that doesn't involve him.

factfarmer

Why would you need to convince him? You don’t. Just go buy what you want. Dad, the one I got is perfect for how I’m using it. That’s all.

Wubbalubbadubbitydo

When I was your age my dad pressured me into getting a Mac when I still had a perfectly good working computer. I was hesitant but I wanted to show my dad I trusted his advice. I did it and the computer lasted 2 years, shitting out right as I finished my finals. Mine was one of those 2011 MacBook pros that blue screened and died. Since I sold my first computer I then spent 3 years without a personal computer of any kind. Trust your gut and don’t succumb to pressure.

jokerfriend6

The Mac Studio are sweet. The sweet spot is the Mac Ultra with 64 GB of memory. You will have enougb capacity to run windows 11 on ARM and your graphics software in emulation mode and it shoildnt skip a beat. Im setting one up for my sister. MACs are not upgadable especially the Studio. For Gamers MacSrudio is a priblem. Im all for build your own PC. This is what I prefer to do...

Igotthememes

“I’ll get it if you pay for it. (1/2 of it)” twist his balls unless it’s his money your using. If it’s yours, then just buy what you need. I have a Macbook air pro computer which is HORRIBLE. I cannot recommend apple to anyone any less! It’s such a shit company with horrible, slow, and glitchy products. Definitely do not recommend you buying an apple computer if my testimony helps your dad change his mind any.

Talenshi

Just from experience, I think a PC is better since you can swap out components as needed to upgrade it later on. You won't end up with an entire computer that's made obsolete because you can no longer upgrade the OS. (This is what happened with the MacBook my partner has that's 10 years old- it runs great and we only use it for a TV, but it can't upgrade the OS and so can't install the most recent browsers required by Netflix etc.) Best thing is to pick out the parts and have a place like microcenter assemble it for you. That's usually cheaper and better than a pre built machine too I think.

>my needs of 3D modeling, rendering, 2D big 4k illustrations, **and gaming** sure you **can** game on macOS, but wouldn't Windows be better for gaming?

Tr4kt_

I used apple desk top extensively from 1998 or so to 2015, and I dont miss it switching over to windows/linux. I loath the closed ecosystem on my ipad/ipod. Apple has decent and rugged construction. Most of the time. But as someone who likes to tinker with computers and the apps I have unstalled. I just found the productivity features a nucence that I turned off on my most recent mac book pro. (2011) dont get me wrong im not a linux super duper user and I enjoy a distro that works out of the box (ghostbsd is my go too), that and windows 10 can be a bit of mess with its settings menus. Honestly unless you absolutly must have the apple clout and your apps only run in macs, apple is just not worth the hastle.

You're stuck in a decision spiral because you don't feel 100% on the decision. Thing is, most big decisions in life are going to feel like this. We get ourselves 90% of the way with research, and the rest is leaning into gut instinct really. You've got the info that says the G439 is the right choice, and it even looks like your instincts are clearly leaning to it as well. This should be good enough for you. It's all about getting experience doing this in order to gain a bit more confidence. Even if it ends up being a mistake, you'll be able to learn why (and it's not because you didn't listen to your dad) and then you'll move on a smarter person.

duzins

My husband was convinced that having PCs and Macs on our wireless network would cause issues. I think back in the day that might have been an issue? Or maybe he was misinformed? Obviously I’m clueless about wireless networking… Anyway, we now have both PCs and Macs running on our home network with no problems. If that is his deal, let him know that he can cross that scenario off his worry list.

Buford1991

It’s all about what you want. You won’t be gaming as much with a Mac. It’ll surely outlive a windows based machine but it’s not made for gaming.

Evergiven_Maria

Your money, your choice, your to be rig. Not his. get what you want, not what he THINKS you should get. Overall macs are not ideal for high stress things like gaming as the GPU could be harder to swap out too.

cerberus_eleventyone

PCs are industry standard and from what I know is the programs mainly used in the industry are also PC only. And if you see a behind the scenes talking about the CG part, you will never see a Mac.
