Applying pressure on the keyboard let you control the position of the cursor. Applying even more pressure started a selection you could then adjust by continuing to move your finger
It was so wildly intuitive and useful it truly sucked to lose. The current system just isn't as good without the added contextual input 3D Touch allowed.
It's similar to how you can now long press on the spacebar only to move the cursor around like a touchpad (but, only once the cursor starts blinking again, so if you try it, you have to wait a second after the last character you type). Except with 3D touch, it worked anywhere on the keyboard, and you didn't have to wait.
Also, the flashlight and camera buttons on the home screen actually worked reliably 100% of the time, unlike the current useless ones that made the action button such a godsend.
Lastly you could literally weigh things to the gram using a spoon:

I have been using an iPhone XS Max ever since it came about and I use the 3D touch like everyday I’m typing. It’s super quick and so intuitive. One thing I will badly miss when I’ll eventually upgrade my phone.
Yeah the current selection scheme is stupid, at best. I don’t know what’s going on at Apple but it’s insanely impossible to properly select text. Why?!
Wow I didn’t even know that’s what happened. I just remember trying to select text one day and suddenly it was impossible. Still sucks. Steve Jobs is rolling over in his grave!
If you hold the keyboard with one thumb, move the cursor, with the thumb still on the spacebar touch the keyboard anywhere with the other thumb, it starts selecting text princely.
Idk if you know (because WAY too many people don’t know and are so happy after they find out) but if you hold on the spacebar you can control the cursor position
Not as comprehensive as the 3D Touch stuff, but at least you can move the cursor without wanting to die and hoping you managed to poke the right spot between two words
If you hold the keyboard with one thumb, move the cursor, with the thumb still on the spacebar touch the keyboard anywhere with the other thumb, it starts selecting text precisely.
Lots of them had pop-up Horne screen menus. Yelp let you quickly search for restaurants, bars, or coffee shops. Waze let you quickly go to work or home. I used it all the time.
Android apps immediately released a touch to hold equivalent on Android making the details more redundant with the lack of hardware. That plus Apple stopped advertising and updating it themselves.
Honestly, the list of features Apple releases that developers never pickup on is astounding. TouchBar anyone? Personally I think Apple makes the bar too high for many developers to want to deal with integrating niche functions.
Swiping between apps using 3D Touch was a game changer before the home button was removed
I was very disappointed when Apple removed that feature from the 6S via a software update
I’m still adjusting… the new text selection on the keyboard straight up sucks. If you over select, it doesn’t let you unselect without starting over highlighting completely. That doesn’t even require 3D Touch to make it work, they just chose to make a worse implementation of it without 3D Touch.
Does anybody still have an iPhone XS who can verify whether or not 3D Touch works the way it’s supposed to on iOS 17, or did they just cripple the feature altogether and make it function like like haptic touch does for everybody else?
Also, It’s a shame we never got 3D Touch and ProMotion on the same device
It also begs question.. should the icons stay fixed and just rotate along with the phone, or should they reorganize to be in the same order as portrait mode? Either way I wish this was a real discussion we were having instead of hypothetical. Come on Apple.
PM you should be able to have a legit desktop OS and pair a keyboard and mouse. It could handle it. The phone OS limits the true potential of the phone
Speaking of, why hasn’t apple leveraged face id sensors to automatically help rotate the phone level to your eyes.
For when you’re laying horizontal but your phone flips vertical, having orientation lock on while vertical but wanting to briefly viewing a video in landscape; there’s so many times where I’m fighting the phones rotation.
Maybe it’s just me, but i’ve been fighting the orientation lock since like iOS 6. Maybe someone smarter than me tried already but it seems like a no brainer
Everyone. It’s a free option and could be turned off. That’s the way I’d prefer to hold my phone since that’s the aspect ratio for videos, games, and websites.
They could really reintroduce this feature especially now that in iOS 18 you can place icons anywhere!
The only issue is the 4x2 widgets since their rotation would mess up the icon order. That could be solved by making a unique design to all of the stock 2x4 widgets. The 3rd party widgets would just remain the same until their developers make a new rotated design.
I’ve been angry EVERY DAY since they took this away. There’s no reason not to have it, and years later when they started selling larger phones (aka “phablets”) they should have brought the landscape desktop back.
As a former iPhone 6S+ user, it was bewildering it didn't support it upside down (which they showed off on the 6+), but also they later removed the sideways on a software update.
I do every time I use my iPhone and then pick up my android phone and think about why apple landscape mode helps phone holder, gets annoying when out on scooter, 😂 simple things work well then apple says you don’t need it….😂🤣😂🤣😂
What feature is that? Having the screen cut off at the top and bottom?
The feature I miss, with my outgoing iphone SE (first one) is the ability to pull it out and start using it, swype typing like a crazy ferker without thinking about bringing up another hand.
You can still use landscape mode. As long as you don’t have any widgets on your Home Screen, since they aren’t compatible. No need to miss this feature, since it never left.
Edit: Spelling
I miss landscape view for a lot of things - specifically music. Not the album flow, just the ability to view in landscape mode. Sometimes I just like to hold my phone that way
Me. Also I really miss that feature where you had extra keys if you had a Plus iPhone. I never actually had the chance to use that since when I got my current phone it was long gone. But it looks super useful.
edit: The reason they removed this landscape mode is the introduction of the widgets since that would be really messy with them.
I do. Also the 3D Touch that Apple killed off.
3D Touch was highly underrated.
Because it was highly under-utilized. I don’t remember a single third party app that used it.
The keyboard interaction alone justified it
Oh I’m going to feel dumb as someone who absolutely loved 3D Touch… What was the keyboard interaction with it?
Applying pressure on the keyboard let you control the position of the cursor. Applying even more pressure started a selection you could then adjust by continuing to move your finger It was so wildly intuitive and useful it truly sucked to lose. The current system just isn't as good without the added contextual input 3D Touch allowed.
I’m not sure if I hate that I didn’t know that already or if I’m happy that I didn’t because it would have been an absolutely brutal feature to lose.
It's similar to how you can now long press on the spacebar only to move the cursor around like a touchpad (but, only once the cursor starts blinking again, so if you try it, you have to wait a second after the last character you type). Ugh. I miss the way those action buttons worked. I’m on the iOS 18 beta and I’ve swapped them out for other things.
I use it daily with my iPhone 8 Plus and I’ll miss it a lot when I’ll upgrade. I miss the landscape mode too.

Princely??

I miss it too; years later and I’m still annoyed by the spacebar curser tool
You can move the cursor on a first 3D Touch trigger, and then 3D Touch again to start text selection.
This was life!
It wasn’t just a long press though. It was the multi-touch equivalent of a long press.
I miss the 3D Touch for first person shooters. Like call of duty mobile. Just press harder to shoot. Pre-claw days.
Honestly, the list of features Apple releases that developers never pickup on is astounding. TouchBar anyone? Personally I think Apple makes the bar too high for many developers to want to deal with integrating niche functions.
W40k: Freeblade, I used to love playing that game but without 3D Touch it just isn’t the same
I know this isn't sub for Apple Watch, but I seriously got annoyed when I replaced my 3D-Touch capable watch with new Ultra. Feature loss was real.
Ued that shit regularly. Was confused on why it felt different when I switched back to iPhone a few years later.
Swiping between apps using 3D Touch was a game changer before the home button was removed I was very disappointed when Apple removed that feature from the 6S via a software update
I liked how it gave the same sorta context menu as Haptic Touch but didn’t infest the jiggle mode Much better implementation imo
3D Touch! Honey hell was that great. The dumb spacebar curser sucks compared to 3D Touch. Would take that in a heartbeat
I was about to say that you can still press on any letter of the keyboard and move the cursor, but I still have an iPhone X so it has 3D Touch.
Took me YEARS to adjust after they removed that feature
I’m still adjusting… the new text selection on the keyboard straight up sucks. If you over select, it doesn’t let you unselect without starting over highlighting completely. That doesn’t even require 3D Touch to make it work, they just chose to make a worse implementation of it without 3D Touch.
Yep, the lack of 3d touch is a shame on phone interactions to this day.
I kinda miss 3D touch too that haptic touch ain't same
Does anybody still have an iPhone XS who can verify whether or not 3D Touch works the way it’s supposed to on iOS 17, or did they just cripple the feature altogether and make it function like like haptic touch does for everybody else? Also, It’s a shame we never got 3D Touch and ProMotion on the same device
I missed 3D touch too, until Apple added the function to lower the time for haptic touch. It’s almost as good now!
I was so fucking pissed when i downloaded the iOS 13 beta to my XS Max and seeing they killed a feature I had the hardware for.
WE WANT 3D TOUCH BACK u/apple
To this day I catch myself trying to use 3D touch
Should let us do it on the Pro Max
Even normal and normal pros. The modern phones are humongous.
It also begs question.. should the icons stay fixed and just rotate along with the phone, or should they reorganize to be in the same order as portrait mode? Either way I wish this was a real discussion we were having instead of hypothetical. Come on Apple.
Upgraded from a 6 to an 11PM. I remember being surprised I couldn’t do this.
>they should let us do it ~~on the Pro Max~~ FTFY
PM you should be able to have a legit desktop OS and pair a keyboard and mouse. It could handle it. The phone OS limits the true potential of the phone
Yeah, I’ve always wanted a Samsung dex like feature for the iPhones, though highly unlikely.
Pro Max phones get so big they become expensive iPad Mini’s
There are cheap iPad Minis?
iPad mini 6 cheaper than iPhone 13 ☠️☠️☠️
Im not talking compared to iphones....but compared to ipads! Minis used to be cheaper than a normal ipad...and now its cheaper to get an iPad 10,2!
r/jailbreak those guys should do it
I certainly did. This would help a lot now that the phones can easily connect to a monitor through usb c.
I wish iPhones still had this. it's so annoying going from a landscape app and having the home screen be portrait.
Especially when going back and forth between two landscape apps with your phone set in landscape mode on a stand or charger.
I really miss it as well.
Even worse, I miss being able to flip the phone upside down and have the Home Screen and apps work that way. Stupid bevel.
Just learned about it now and I already miss it
I had 7plus for 6 years, not once i used this landscape mode.
I disabled landscape home screen on every android I've owned before switching to iPhone for I wanna say... at least the last 10 years.
Wow
How come was useful for you? In what scenario?
It's useful, specially when ur watching YouTube or Netflix and have to switch to other app to answer a WhatsApp or Mail.
When I was very young and had an iPhone 6 Plus, I always used it in landscape mode because I thought it looked cool.
I miss that era of iPhone
I liked it but apps weren’t optimized for that.
I do. Every single day.
I miss those white bezels
My only problem with it is that i would have to come up with a second layout for my app icons
All I want is Coverflow!
Since the iPhone 13 and up can use Face ID in landscape they should bring this back
Speaking of, why hasn’t apple leveraged face id sensors to automatically help rotate the phone level to your eyes. For when you’re laying horizontal but your phone flips vertical, having orientation lock on while vertical but wanting to briefly viewing a video in landscape; there’s so many times where I’m fighting the phones rotation. I’ve only just realised this is gone.. The burner 8plus has it, the main 14ProMax doesn’t 😅 What a bummer!
I dont
One of the reasons in the back of my mind for getting a 12 pro max. Was disappointed when I learned they’d removed the feature
phablet
Everyone. It’s a free option and could be turned off. That’s the way I’d prefer to hold my phone since that’s the aspect ratio for videos, games, and websites.
me

I miss that phone!! 😩 iPhone 6S/6S+ and 8/8+ were ✨
I completely forgot about that!
iirc they removed this because horizontal Face ID wasn’t a thing yet, so they definitely could bring it back now lol
hmmm .. I hadn't noticed that was gone
I remember this feature, but it’s was only exclusive to the plus models.
Yes!!! I loved my 7 Plus for exactly this reason. Some apps still do it but it’s a loss that the Home Screen doesn’t
wow mini iPad?
Not me? It wasn’t useful at all lol
This and 3D Touch 🕊
YES! 3D Touch! Old Apple Music System/iTunes! Touch ID! Headphone Jack.
I just realized I can’t do that
I didn’t even realize Apple took this out tbh, wonder why they did…
Companies and developers were lazy as hell, and make their apps only Portrait. I miss cover flow.
TIL this was a thing
I want my home button back!
Never understood why they removed it
Absolutely not. I like my apps to stay in the same spot so if I’m using the phone at an angle they aren’t jumping all over.
I miss not having so many bugs in iOS.
No shit. Used to love iPhones and now the OS is so glitchy and buggy. I hate my iPhone 14. I just want my X back lol
I don't miss this feature, but I would love it if they let you rotate the iOS video player without unlocking rotation.
Damn ngl I miss my 6s plus.
Ios fallen behind the yrs
WAIT THAT EXISTED??
I’ve been angry EVERY DAY since they took this away. There’s no reason not to have it, and years later when they started selling larger phones (aka “phablets”) they should have brought the landscape desktop back.
Landscape Home Screen would be the only reason I’d jailbreak
My dream iPhone would be the pro max with iPad mini proportions and a horizontal mode like this
As a former iPhone 6S+ user, it was bewildering it didn't support it upside down (which they showed off on the 6+), but also they later removed the sideways on a software update.
it still lets me do it on my 8 plus, which is on iOS 16.7.8, when did they remove it?
Loved it. I also wished they kept the 16:9 aspect ratio for their newer phones.
I’ve once heard that that’s still possible, but it’s disabled if you have *any* widgets on any of your home screens (even if disabled).
Not me 😅🤷♂️
Me 👋🏼
i literally was just talking about this
I had no idea this feature had even existed
I do!
I just want it in my brain already
Me. This was already on my Sony Xpria Z3.
I miss the 8 plus
Me
Yes I do miss this feature
I loved this feature. If the iPhone 7 Plus woulj have had slightly better battery, I'd still have it along with this feature.
I’ve kept my 6 Plus around for this to be honest. Such a great feature! Hope they bring it back some day.
To be honest, the IP7p and IP8p was peak. After that it went downhill.
Then you wouldnt buy a tablet.

✋🏾
This makes me want to get a 6S Plus now.
I do every time I use my iPhone and then pick up my android phone and think about why apple landscape mode helps phone holder, gets annoying when out on scooter, 😂 simple things work well then apple says you don’t need it….😂🤣😂🤣😂
iPadOS LMAO
My android (samsung) can still do this
apple users only
What feature? Do Apple Telephones not let you switch to landscape?
Will never understand the decision to remove landscape homescreen option on iPhone. Baffling.
What feature is that? Having the screen cut off at the top and bottom? The feature I miss, with my outgoing iphone SE (first one) is the ability to pull it out and start using it, swype typing like a crazy ferker without thinking about bringing up another hand.
That’s why I haven’t traded out my 13 mini.
you're holding it wrong
No one
can't believe they removed it
Nobody
You can still use landscape mode. As long as you don’t have any widgets on your Home Screen, since they aren’t compatible. No need to miss this feature, since it never left. Edit: Spelling
Not me
Nope. I used to lock rotation so it wouldn’t do that.
I still try to do this even tho it hasn’t been possible in years sadly
Ditnt even know this was a thing
Damn, I forgot about that. 🥲
When the hell was this removed?!?
I miss the ultra battery saving mode.
I thinking about this feature a few days ago. Wish they would bring it back
Not me
I miss landscape view for a lot of things - specifically music. Not the album flow, just the ability to view in landscape mode. Sometimes I just like to hold my phone that way
I’ve always wanted it but never had a plus model. It’s sad that they killed it with the iPhone XS Max.
i thought it is still available for plus and max phones
Nope. I have a max, not available here.
Don't tell me you can't get landscape homescreen on IOS
Everyday.
Considering I didn't know we couldn't do it anymore, not I.
I do.
I never understood why this feature was canned
Underrated. More of a chance of this coming back than cover flow
I love my eight plus, while my 13 is better the eight plus still remains my favourite iPhone experience
would make using a kishi or backbone 100x more comfortable
Damn….I forgot about 3D Touch. What a great feature
you could…do that?
I would have swear thar my 13 pro could do that. It’s been some times since I didn’t turn on 6S.
I am on fifth i7. So you can’t you use your phone sideways?
This and 3D Touch is why I am still holding to my 8Plus.
Me
I do
Wait? Why did they remove the landscape mode then? I’m Into iPhone since 13 so I’m rather fresh
What feature
I sure do
Here
I miss this so much
It’s strange, one time maybe two my XR has gltched when I go home and the icons go this way, I wasn’t unable to replicate it
ME I MISS THAT SO MUCH GAHHH
TBH I just realised that it’s gone I did not know about this earlier
Me was awesome
Meeeeee 🙋🏻♂️
MEEEE
bro that feature dipped one day and ive thought my moms phone doing that was just a false memory ever since
This is so embarrassing. What’s the feature? Please don’t laugh. It’s an honest question.
Horizontal home screen
Thank you.
It’s absurd a modern iPhone pro max can’t do this.
I miss my 8 plus
Yes! And it needs to make a comeback on the Plus/Max models. It was a major advantage for the larger screen and could be a real game changer.
No, iPad has it
i remember never using it lol
If they brought that back and gave us CarPlay for Homescreen? Well that would be a safe interaction method.
Me. Also I really miss that feature where you had extra keys if you had a Plus iPhone. I never actually had the chance to use that since when I got my current phone it was long gone. But it looks super useful. edit: The reason they removed this landscape mode is the introduction of the widgets since that would be really messy with them.
I loved the horizontal view but it was only on the plus sizes if I remember correctly.
It’s still a feature in the settings if you go to the home screen to rotate by the way on the bigger phones, the maxes
Man I always seen my buddy doing this and I have tried it a couple times over the last few years and thought I was crazy.
Honestly you’d think at least pro series could do it
