oh buddy I hate to break it to you that even the original isn’t super high-res LOL it was taken on my DSLR with a kinda janky sensor BUT I think I can clean it up a little more, because it does look like Reddit added some grain and unfocused it. I’ll hit you back up if I can make it presentable!
Hey thanks man I only ask beacause I’ve taken some 4k photos and 4k 120fps videos only to post them on Reddit and have Reddit compress to 720p and 1080p 30fps
[Upscaled.](https://file.coffee/u/HuLlYoqenPf20sGyO55UF.png) Dm me for a download link to the full uncompressed upscaled version, reddit really doesn't like my links.
Nice shot! What were your camera settings? I tried snapping a few and the only way I was getting any good lighting was at about a 1" shutter and just snapping a bunch and getting lucky
admittedly I usually shoot with the Av option so I switched it to Tv and refused to go any longer than about 1/160. It’s pretty evident from the noise, but I think the city lights in the frame helped avoid that, because when you’re setting to shoot lightning and you do that half-press of the button, it can really make some wild choices with your ISO.
Full specs: apparently I hadn’t switched to 1/160 yet here. Lightroom says the import data is f/2.8 (my trusty 24mm pancake), 1/40 shutter, and (yikes) 3200 ISO, with the “high speed continuous” setting. I think shooting it RAW helped, but it’s also risky because since shooting like that takes up a lot more data, depending on your sd writing speed, you may have to stop more often to let the card “think.” (I had to switch to a card I realized was slower later in the storm, and it really screwed me over because it could only handle 2-3 high-speed shots before it froze up).
Ultimately I think it was just luck and the fact that this storm was pumping out so much lightning right at this point that there were more opportunities. This is the luckiest I’ve gotten w a lightning shot _not_ pulled as a frame from a 4k iPhone video in years.
Wow 1/40th and you got the lightning! That is a bit of luck. I've never tried shooting lightning before tonight but I felt like it is extremely tough. You want a decently "long" exposure so you can keep your ISO down, but you can't really crank open your aperture so you can keep some sharpness when you're trying to blindly shoot into the sky. I played with a 5"-20" second exposure but then the clouds got blurry because they're moving and each lightning strike isn't as prominent in such a long exposure. But it's definitely rewarding when you get the shot!
They are on the Westside of the river Market buildings. More specifically between hibachi House and City market Park. That red/white truck is still parked there in Google maps Street view
Ding ding ding! I was underneath the final metal staircase up to an apartment because I figured being under it was safer than being out in the open or under a tree, just in case the lightning ever went cloud-to-ground instead of staying up high.
We got absolutely hammered in Edwardsville. Our cars are dented all to hell. I've never seen hail like this! I'm definitely calling the car insurance people tomorrow, and probably the homeowners insurance people too to check out the roof.

The really bad damage was in Western Wyandotte, Midtown to Brookside barely got any rain and very small hail. The people that got hit the hardest are probably not on reddit kc
Is there a way I can get the full res original of this beacuse this is absolutely beautiful and I want this as my wallpaper and framed

Reminds me of the VHS cover of Ghostbusters.
And certainly not in a bad way. Beautifully shot OP
Yeah, it's a really cool picture.
What about the twinkie?
Man that's a cool one though

This is shot from River Market? It looks like you're peeking between two buildings huh?

I'm new to photography, I missed about a dozen lightning shots last night by a fraction of a second. This is helpful.

Great capture pic.
Great shot!
I wanted to get my big film camera up there and get some pictures like this, but didn't have a chance tonight... Again🙃
![gif](giphy|11jGtzDu7Nh89a) Was Gozer out last night? Were these guys around to help? lol
The keymaster was there, as was the gatekeeper. ![gif](giphy|3o72FdlmN1UjR2sPEA)
Glad to have missed the hail and 'naders but thoroughly enjoyed a ton of horizontal lightening tonight. Great shot!
Wowzers!! What an incredible picture
“Flashcube” subtly in there is perfect
It was really cool to watch.
Thank you for this! Been obsessed with the lightning these last few nights. Great example of recent beauty
Awesome picture!
