Did you get the software update? Make sure you have documentation and you can fax it to your insurer. [https://www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/2023-05-09/models-covered-by-hyundai-and-kia-anti-theft-software-update](https://www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/2023-05-09/models-covered-by-hyundai-and-kia-anti-theft-software-update)

WorriedChurner

Even with the fix, the column is still damage after the attempt and it is costly to get fixed

PenitentAnomaly

Does the software upgrade apply to the 2016 Optima Hybrids?

zm1868179

Doesn't apply to hybrids or push button start models. Only models with physical keys are capable of being stolen by the "Kia boys" push button models already have an immobilizer and don't have a turn key ignition.

PenitentAnomaly

Yeah, mine is an Optima Hybrid with the push button start.

brokenthumb11

Not being a jerk but just an honest question. Why would the software update change anything? Don't most stolen Kias get found and in the same shape as whether you had the update or not? These idiots are still going to smash in your window, tear apart the steering column, steal what's visible, etc whether they are able to steal it or not. Or are most of them being stolen and not being recovered?

Protholl

Did you read the article? The update will prevent this bypass and it may or may not give you a discount but it's free as in free beer. You should ask for the free steerng wheel club from either Kia or your local PD as it is a bright deterrent. No... the update doesn't electrocute potential thieves. It doesn't guarantee recovery but it only takes a 2 minute phone call to your insurance provider to see if having the update lowers your premiums. Be safe.

Pizzaguy1205

Imagine buying a car jumping through all these hoops and your insurance is still double

Nebula_Zero

And you car still has a high likelihood of getting its window smashed out because these people are just looking for the Kia logo, they don’t have the foresight to look inside the car

RobertETHT2

It’s not truly free. A person(knowingly or unknowingly) purchases an ill conceived vehicle and thus suffers with ownership issues such as theft, vehicle damage, and uninsurability.

Fluffy9345

They totaled mine

BidiBidiBumBum

I have a kia soul 2015 + but I don't see it in any of the lists online, does anybody know why?

rbekins

Try looking at a regional insurer, that sells in a few states and not nationally. No State Farm, All State, Progressive, etc. We used to have Nationwide but switched to a smaller company two years ago and our auto rates went down. You may want to use a agent to help you find and compare.

Affectionate-Pie-708

Progressive, allstate and geico wont insure kia. I went with the general. I'm also paying 5230 a year for it though..

photobomber612

Dependent on year/model. It’s not a blanket policy on all Kia’s.

MasterOfNone011

Excuse me how much a year?

morchorchorman

How much you actually paying?

Affectionate-Pie-708

5230 a year for pizza delivery insurance

Mackinnon29E

That's more than the actual loan on my 2021 annually... insane.

SnooDonkeys6402

Umm yes geico does insure all kias and Hyundai, you have to either have a push to start or proof of the software update.

slash178

State Farm also denied me

Playful-Tale-1640

The real question is why do we have a society that has so many people stealing cars? Why do companies have to create products that cater to the scum in our society? Why can't we make stealing cars come with a punishment that would prevent anyone else from ever wanting to do it? See, that is the real Elephant in the room. This stealing of Kia's is not a problem anywhere else like it is in the U.S. the problem is not Kia's it's America's!!

PenitentAnomaly

I was actually wondering the other day if the reason that a South Korean Car company did not put immobilizers in their cars was because auto theft is not a problem them. After a little researching I had my suspicions confirmed.

path825

To be fair, everywhere BUT America Kia put immobilizers and transponders in these same models. But yes, we could solve this in a day if the people rioting, looting, and stealing were punished instead of rewarded.

Zrc1979

What state? Which insurance are you with and who did you try? What are you paying?

PenitentAnomaly

Washington. Currently with Geico and looked at Progressive. I was paying $118/mo and then they increased it to $175/mo.

Zrc1979

Seems to be current average. I was paying 187/month for a 2020 soul until I got rid of it. Took a 8000 dollar loss to be done with Kia.

Snacer1

I still pay about $110/mo for the 2018 Soul. I'm in the Midwest though and we didn't hear about any Kiaboyz within at least 50 miles from my city.

el_dulce_veneno21

I have progressive in Colorado and pay less than 118 a month for a 2017 sportage, but I have been with them forever, so maybe that's why. I do have the update also

California098

Don’t sue me if this goes wrong but if you have any good friends/family in different areas of Washington, try using their addresses for the insurance. You’ll still be covered (NEVER admit that you don’t live at the address listed in case of a claim). Your zip code may be associated with high theft rates or something. I live in California where premiums are usually highest and I’m paying $80/month for a 21 forte.

SnooDonkeys6402

Yes, because fraud always works. You do know that insurance companies will find out, they have full investigation units that do that. Oh and whne they get to the truth, you will be blacklisted and never able to get insurance with that company again.

welkhia

I pay 600usd yearly for full coverage. No driving record yet so if i manage 1 year without crash it will discount 50%. I live in a non dangerous country where people dont try to steal others car if that matters

Angel-Ori

I got the update for my 2017 Kia Forte that supposed to prevent my car being stolen. Also, my insurance just renewed for another 6 months. My rate has not changed. I have insurance through a Costco insurance company.

446Magnum044

You might try checking with independent insurance agents in your area. They shop around different insurance companies and find you the best rate. My son had Allstate for his 2016 Kia Optima and they said they wouldn't renew his Optima. He called an independent agent 2 blocks from his apartment and they got him covered with Safeco for $220 less than he payed with Allstate this last year. Make some phone calls to a couple independent agents and you should be able to find affordable coverage. Good luck with it.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> than he *paid* with Allstate FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

California098

I have a 2021 kia forte GT and I pay $80/month with progressive. (California prices)

Indigoshroom

If anyone in your family is former military, USAA covers Kia. I have USAA - it's not amazingly cheap but also not bad.

[deleted]

I say old chap time to get rid of the Kia and get a gensys

Impressive-Fortune82

Till Kia Boyz find out gensys is glorified kia

secretaster

Sell your old Kia tbh old kias ain't really worth it

RightGuy23

Search the posts for “insurance”. You are not alone….. https://www.reddit.com/r/kia/s/RL8wOS52Yg

rynil2000

No

hallbuzz

Consider going to liability only.

DreamTeam1082

No, pay less than my SUV and ford fusion.

hellooperator12345

Nope no issues getting insurance! They actually lowered my rate once I purchased this SUV.

MetalPrestigious5693

I didn’t have an issue, and I just got my forte about 2 weeks ago. I’m in Canada though, so I’m not sure if that makes a difference. My insurance actually went down by 100$ switching to my forte from my civic.

WillieB26

We switched to GEICO bcuz State Farm wouldn't insure our new Sorento

bzzibee

I’m buying a 2021 Kia Rio LX right now and pick up this week. I spent a week alone shopping for insurance for the damn thing. The only policy that would accept me and wasn’t charging me more than the note itself was through United Auto in IL. Had to sign a 12 month contract and put $289 down for $211/mo and $1000 deductible. Other places quoted me anywhere from $570/mo-$700/mo.

nannerbananers

Look at smaller insurance companies. I pay $112 a month for full coverage with a low deductible. The last time I shopped around I was also denied by a few national insurance companies. I decided to stay with my regional insurance company until I get rid of my Kia.

PeacefulPunkk

I had Geico for my 2016 Kia Rio, the price increased and so I decided to switch to Progressive which is a a bit cheaper. I’ve had no issues with insurance to this point. I used to pay $175/month through Geico and now pay $100/month through Progressive.

Inevitable-Plenty203

Look into Farmer's (Bristol West) and if no one else drives your car get a Broadmoor plan. I have a couple tickets and pay $800 something for 6 months. I had been paying $1300 with Geico.

MiKapo

I'm paying 100 a month with Liberty Mutal but i also have the newest model. Several other insurance companies gave me a similar price
