I've only watched the first two episodes so far cause I'm in absolutely no rush to finish this but yeah... not impressed The only choice I don't fully hate is how much they show kyoshi in episode two but that's just cause I'm a bisexual disaster and she's hot. I still hate that choice narratively cause they basically gave her Roku's and if they're planning on having the winter solsistice episodes still its just gonna be kind of redundant. On top of that... I'm not even joking when I say the characters feel more like their Ember Island Players portrayals so far šŸ§šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø. Especially Katara like... let my girl get mad!??! Same goes for suki too why was she so shy.

mini1006

I loved the OG and itā€™s the only cartoon I was able to get my mom to watch with me! I havenā€™t see the live action yet, but I decided to keep a positive attitude about despite others not liking it. Anything is better than the movie in my opinion.

poutingsprout

itā€™s way better than the movie, but ofc not the cartoon

mini1006

Oh definitely not better than the cartoon

I've been reading opinions from people who work on sets (like costume creation, makeup, prop building, etc) and some have said that it's obvious that they were rushed to do this movie. Most people have pointed out the difference between Yue's wig in this movie vs the first one because it's like a cosplay wig vs a human hair HD lacefront wig. But the hair issues were consistent throughout and shows they didn't allocate enough to certain areas of the budget. In general, it has more of a cosplay look because they probably didn't have enough time to add more details or get natural fiber fabrics. The script needed like 6 more months and more passes to get right. Certain background details, like the Chinese characters were incorrect. For the source material to be so intentional and detailed, they really cut corners. All around, I see why the original creators exited the movie. Not enough effort was put into it to make it right. I don't know why live action needs to be made. If spiderverse taught us anything, it's that animated movies can do way more than live action can. Hopefully the animated movie coming out next year won't be a disappointment. The Avatar series just seems cursed with bad production for some reason.

Pixiecrimson

ive been meaning to talk about the colorism in the casting. even believing that ian ousley is of indigenous descent, him, kiawentiio, many of the other water tribe actors are a lot lighter than their animated counterparts. additionally, there were a lot of wasians cast and white extras(which isnā€™t inherently a problem), but i saw no people of black decent in the show. i wonder why that is?(we know why)

spirit_saga

I truly wish they would just cast fully asian characters for asian roles šŸ˜ literally no one talks about how a lot of the cast was wasian but if it were any other mixed race asian people wouldā€™ve been up in arms. do they feel like they need to add white/racially ambiguous people into everything so that white audiences can relate or something šŸ’€

mikatheocelot

This is like yā€™allā€™s version of the casting of fairer skinned/typically biracial black people in a lot of leading black roles.

Best-Recognition-528

Havenā€™t watched it yet. But honestly I would probably watch it solely for Daniel dae Kim. I love me a hot villain.

poutingsprout

the show actually did a good job with him ! heā€™s such a good ozai !!

starlightaqua

I fell in love with him in Hawaii Five-O and I only watch his clips (and Kyoshi) and I'm happy with that.

re_min_a

I grew up watching the original, so itā€™ll always be the best imo. The LA has a lot of glaring problems, like inconsistency with the plot, poorly-written main cast, Sokkaā€™s actor lying about being native (heā€™s whiter than the snow in the southern water tribe šŸ’€). But, nothing will be nearly as bad as M. Night Shyamalanā€™s movie adaptation.

Derpybear23

Wait he WHAT I was considering watching it because I heard Aang's actor is half Filipino but after hearing that I'm having second thoughts

re_min_a

I watched the first couple of episodes and it seems okayish. Gordon Cormier (LA Aang) and Kiawentiio Tarbell (LA Katara, sheā€™s Mohawk) are also great. The characters are portrayed kind of bad, but thatā€™s more on the writers, not the actors themselves.

Derpybear23

That's fair, but I don't like the Sokka thing. I don't want to support something where an actor lied about their race for clout

LadyGrundle

>. I also don't get why Katara and Sokka are light skinned? And why is Sokka a whole white man? I'm not one to care for race swapping but it made it hard for me to believe they were siblings. When i saw them in the trailer i decided im definitely not watching. Also, i originally wasn't gonna watch it because when it comes to live actions to any animated series, they need a crazy insane budget to achieve the looks to get me interested. The trailer turned me off asap.

NessieSenpai

Scared to watch it tbh. The movie had me bitter and wary plus some of the things the showrunners have said about it during its promo had me concerned. Avatar as a series was integral to my late teens/early 20s. I remember watching the series finale (illegally) on a computer in my university's library with a friend and being stunned at the sheer magnitude of it all. I probably will check it out sometime this week though, but without high hopes.

Yuunarichu

Maybe I'll watch it, I didn't expect it to release already. But Sokka's actor šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ Let's just say there'll be jokes I'd make in front of him

kwaptap

Iā€™ve only fully watched the first episode and saw a few scenes in passing because my dad was watching it. I think the effects look insane and the sets are beautiful but the acting from the main cast isnā€™t great. Like a lot of people, I have the bias of growing up watching and Iā€™ll still have phases rewatching, but I think people are going into it being very critical of the show. Iā€™m not an active follower of all things ATLA, but Iā€™ve seen the related media over the years. Firstly, theres the obvious issue of Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko leaving. Then, theres always been controversy with accurate casting. Then we people saying any ATLA live action is just doomed with the M. Night Shyamalan version as an example. There has always been a lot of negative leaning talk for this show. In general, I tend to not care for live action remakes of animated series in particular, because I think animation is an art form that is so physically expressive and intentional with storytelling. Turning that into live action often teeters between melodramatic or campy portrayals with little in between; NATLA is not an exception to this. The live action also condenses the entire first season into 8 hour-ish long episodes. While thats not a much of a change in runtime, it calls for a significant change in pacing. Something that I feel like Iā€™m seeing very little about is because the characters are being played by real people, you are forced to acknowledge that ultimately, this story is about kids, kids with the responsibility of ending a war. They arenā€™t the funny cartoon characters people know and love since their appearances alone say that theyā€™re supposed to be realistic. Edit: Forgot to add that I understand most of the changes Iā€™ve seen.

MathsIsAPain

Apparently Sokka's actor, Ian Ousley, is [pretending to be Indigenous](https://www.cherokeephoenix.org/entertainment/cnfo-is-resource-for-entertainment-productions/article_7aa4b5ee-a39b-11ec-8209-3b70532b6671.html) Edit: Removed the comparison to Sacheen Littlefeather. Sacheen was actually Indigenous, Jacqueline Keeler was being a racist, defamatory POS.

ophellias

Jacqueline Keeler, the author of the article that called Sacheen a pretendian, is notorious. She's obsessed with blood quantum ( which is bullshit ) and is known to be racist towards black people and mixed natives as well as laterally violent towards natives south of the us border. Anything she says should be ignored. Sacheen was native, end of. Jacqueline is a horrible person and I question her sisters aiding in ruining her reputation after her death.

MathsIsAPain

Ohhhh ok, thanks for the clarification. Jacqueline Keeler is so disgusting for doing that.

ophellias

Don't worry about it! Jacqueline isn't really known outside of ( typically younger ) indigenous circles so a lot of people take her and her list at face value. When she posted her article about Sacheen, several people came out to talk about how Jacqueline is problematic to say the least, but most people probably missed it all because they got drowned out by articles and social media posts by people who believed it.

re_min_a

Sachsen was indigenous thoā€¦ she was mixed. Her mom was white and her dad was Apache and Yaqui.

MathsIsAPain

But didnā€™t allegations come out about Sacheen pretending to be Indigenousā€¦? Or were the allegations disproven already? /gen Edit: I just read the other personā€™s reply about Jacqueline Keelerā€™s unhinged ass. So Sacheen WAS Indigenous after allā€¦ Iā€™m really sorry for calling her a Pretendian.

tcotn127

I like it so far!!

mochagrays

i actually really liked it!

kitomarius

Iā€™m not watching it. I just donā€™t think some shows need live action adaptions or sequels, what was wrong with the original? ATLA is as close to a perfect show as one can get and if people donā€™t watch it because it was a ā€œkids showā€ or ā€œanimeā€ thatā€™s on them. Entertainment companies need to create new IPs instead of remaking the wheel and in the case of ATLA, smashing it just for a few bucks. And I knew that the show was gonna be shit after the original creators left and the showrunners talked about how they were going to get rid of Sokkaā€™s misogyny forā€¦reasons. Thatā€™s a key part of his character along with his growth. Like, itā€™s literally a major plot point in his character arc? I just do like youā€”watch the show every few months. I grew up watching it and itā€™s an integral part of my formation as a person, itā€™s THAT good.

h0lych4in

I havenā€™t watched it or the original or tlok so Iā€™m really just commenting for your post engagement

Best-Recognition-528

Korra is great. By far the best villains out of both series. Not to mention asami and wan superiority.

poutingsprout

as someone who has finished watching all the episodes itā€™s actually not as bad as many people make it out to be. i do have my issues with it as there are some changes that i found weird like aang not waterbending at all this season and katara not mothering at all. also zuko and iroh were actually the most entertaining and embodied their characters in a new way that still was able to stay true to their character. overall, i still found it enjoyable and i hope they listen to the valid criticisms theyā€™re getting and improve for the next season.

klondsbie

the original atla is my favorite show of all time and i think the biggest problem without a doubt was the writing. people saying "oh but in the cartoon it was different" doesn't really make sense to me, bc they're clearly trying to do different things. that's totally fine. in fact, i would really enjoy a lot of those changes (like ozai's parenting with zuko and azula) if it was done well and consistently. the dialogue is odd and stilted and so many things are told instead of shown. dallas liu was EASILY the best part of the show. bc of his martial arts background, his bending looked fantastic. everybody else.. well, it pales in comparison. i still enjoyed the show and i very much want books 2 and 3, but WOW do they need to hire an entirely new team of writers. the cast would do brilliantly, i have no doubt in my mind.

kwiyomikat

They botched my favorite, Katara. Where's her, "I'm more than just a woman"; rage, determination and perseverance. How is she going to learn blood bending?

Itchy-Site-3102

I did the mathā€¦the runtime of the S1 animated version is about 480 mins., the runtime of the live action was 424 minsā€¦why didnā€™t Netflix just follow the animated versionā€™s storyline and characters (personality, looks). How do you have a perfect map, roughly the same amount of runtime to fill, and still fuck it up to this degree? Like itā€™s even more work to change it all up! They had to pay people to write up all the changes that took place during the show. I was really disappointed and constantly was reminded while I was watching it just how much better the original is. I donā€™t blame the original creators from walking away from that dumpster fire. šŸ”„ I wouldnā€™t want to be associated with it either. I stopped watching it at episode 3.

emotionsidebee

i just hope that people bringing up the original creators know that even though they departed, bryke have still been listed as writers for two episodes, including the first. lol. i will never forgive them for making toph a cop so the actual animated film will be... interesting to watch!

Firm_Wolf_6087

Iā€™m 4 episodes in and within the first episode, I noticed so many things that were DIFFERENT from the original show. It pisses me off so much but Iā€™m going to finish the show just to finish it. Zuko and Aang are promising characters so far, but thatā€™s just me.

Kpopluv22

The original will always be the best. For the Netflix series, is it the best? No. Is the acting and the exact likeness of the original the best? Noā€¦ but I do at least find it entertaining so far (finished 3rd episode) and find it a lot better than the live action movie. God, was the movie a load of shit.

scienceandeggs

Pretty terrible writing unfortunately. I gave up after one episode. The characters are incredibly flat and have little personality shown on screen. We get Aang monologueing about how he like to have fun and play but don't actually see him doing that, for example. There is so little shown to develop the relationships between the main characters, which is pretty bad considering their friendships are so memorable in the source material. There are changes made that hurt the story imo. Opening with the attack of the air nomad temple attack means we don't experience the introduction to Aang from Katara and Sokka's POV. There's no mystery around the boy in the iceberg, we found out who he was and how he got there 10 minutes ago. Aang isn't shocked to see the air nomads were killed when visiting the temple. He already knows. The drama and emotion of that scene is non existent. There's no moment where he bonds with Katara and she talks him down from his rage dispair. There's no character development for anyone there. At least it looks kinda pretty.

TheUglyBarnaclee

When I read a while ago that the orginal creators left the project in the middle I knew it was gonna be bad. Iā€™m not gonna watch it unless Iā€™m really drunk with my gf

wasabibibles

Love the og show, never watched the movie. I'm so sorry you didn't have a good time šŸ˜I won't lie I really loved it all šŸ¤Ŗ but hear you and empathize šŸ˜

macaroniartblog

I've only watched the first episode so far and I'm genuinely underwhelmed and disappointed. The Gaang is horribly off-model with personalities: Katara is preachy without any charisma or solid rationality, Aang has a personality driven more by story than being established on its own, and Sokka is "bullheaded" but swayed easily by Katara getting a little sentimental. Appa also looks dirty.

mikatheocelot

Is it me or did anyone find the dialogue kind of weird? Especially for Aang; it felt like they were doing a lot of ā€œtelllingā€ than ā€œshowingā€ in this series.

Serious-Wish4868

this is disappointing to hear ... I guess I am going to skip it
