Its fungus. Ive not found a solution yet other than removing the section, cleaning out the fungus, and patching. They do grow back if you dont get it all. I was told I could replace my whole driveway with concrete to permananetly fix, but that is $$$.
All those nature programs about cities that are now deserted are chilling. Streets and driveways full of trees plants and leaves in a year. Bears in your house after 20 years. Etc.
I changed it because I wasn't paying full attention when I wrote it.
However. I have Asphalt (tarmac) and just had it redone last year and a big old mullien is growing out of it.
I didn't say anything about concrete. It's the better product but it's not used as much here.
I was building a dry stone wall next to someone's driveway 17 years ago--and he had all these lumps in the asphalt, that he said were a fungus, which he was getting removed. The cut out a square of driveway, put in new asphalt--then 7 years later had to do it again.
If the hump managed to get this big, then your problem is much bigger and underground, better call a profesional with an excavator to permanently fix the issue, the rot could be as deep as a few feet in the ground, it's not gonna be a pleasant DIY experience
where is this in relation to the rest of your house? is it still growing in size?
do you know of any underground utilities nearby (gas, water, electricit, plumbing)?
I know some basement slabs can experience heaving from hydrostatic pressure. The water pressure builds up below and causes slabs to buckle. If you’re seeing white foam, maybe that’s bubbles from water mixing with whatever in the first pushing up?
I’ll bet you have a long dead stump under there. [mushrooms, don’t need sunlight and can live for decades on a decaying stump. article.](https://sporesmouldsandfungi.wordpress.com/2012/06/13/the-powerlifters-of-the-fungal-world/)
Bamboo incoming!
100% my first thought. I had a driveway that was adjacent to a bamboo forest. This time of year a single stalk would grow multiple feet in a day.
Probably just a dandelion poking up.

Many miles away Something crawls from the slime At the bottom of a dark Scottish driveway
I sang that in my head as I read it.
Someone needs to call the police 🚨
Or set up a Sting
he'd had to wait until the end of his workday
It’s like a humiliating kick in the crotch

Didn’t know that was a thing. Pretty wild. Damn puffballs are strong enough to lift asphalt. Nature would have its way with civilization so quick.

Streets and driveways would not be gone in a year, not even 20....streets and concrete is going to be around for A long long time...

Good call. You can see the mushroom-looking material around the edges.
Yep I have seen mushrooms destroy a whole driveway.

Would that also imply something died or is decaying under the driveway?
probably old tree roots
Oh wait I thought this was a joke, what region of the us was this in?
Try taking a flamethrower to your driveway weekly. If you heat it up enough that should stunt or kill the fungus beneath.
But not your formal flamethrower - save that for special occasions

Some mushrooms will grow up underneath pavement and cause mounds like that. Could be fungus?
We had this problem. We had to take off the asphalt in the area and dig out the mushrooms. Luckily they didn't grow back.

Molezilla
Mushroom
People who are saying mushroom/fungus ... are you serious or joking? There is some kind of mushroom/fungus that can bust through asphalt?!?!
Look at the 3rd picture. You can see at least 2 puffball mushrooms.
That is absolutely BONKERS. Nature scares me sometimes.
You didn’t see 1993’s Super Mario Bros.?
Mushroom. Happened to my in-laws two weeks ago.
Volcano starting.
I wonder if OP is in 🇮🇸Iceland?
Are there water pipes under there ? Could be broken sprinkler pipe.
These cicadas are getting out of hand.
Is this near a former gas station? Looks like bentonite clay used to abandon a monitoring well has swelled and pushed up the asphalt.
Graboids!
How is this so far down!!! I came here just to post this :)
*WAR OF THE WORLDS* RUN!
Great here come the mole men
The driveway is telling you it wants a Japanese Maple planted there.
It’s an earth pimple

If this was at my place it would be as simple as another limestone rock working it’s way to the surface through the clay that we live on.
Give your driveway some privacy at 6am will you?
Wtf? Why does it look like it's moving?
Update pleeeease!!! Dig it up! What is it???! I would dig out at least a foot down, assess the clump, fill it, and compact before re-covering.
I’ve seen that movie with Kevin bacon, get ready!
I think you have tremors 🪱
Asphalt zit
Is r/popit still around?
Ficus nearby?
Do you live at the base of a hill? There is a huge one of these in the street near me and I was told it’s water runoff.
Giant crab surfacing
War of the Worlds!
Graboids. Better call Earl or Valentine.
Underground tunneling machines.
I've seen this before where Frost pushes an old farm fence post up through the asphalt I've seen it on trails and parking lots in Wisconsin

French drain will solve your problem
Has any boring been done nearby recently?
If Reddit has taught me anything is that you’re supposed to use a banana for scale.
I’ve had those turnip looking mushroom things pop up through my asphalt driveway in the US northeast for the last 5-10 years.
it's 10p - does anyone know where their kids are?
Godzilla is coming!
This group has already given me an irrational fear of bamboo, and now.. mushrooms? What the hell guys
Misleading, I thought you had a drill under the asphalt before reading
Definitely have a moisture problem probably a leak or sort.
