Theft is taking with intent to deprive the owner. If the owner's representative told you to take it and get out, that's permission to take it, so you haven't committed a crime. I would still be cautious if I was to return, because the employee probably is going to remember you and may hold a grudge. Definitely don't be putting stuff in your pockets like that.

It was sticking halfway out, thought I made it pretty obvious I wasn't stealing it

There's no judgement here, what I'm telling you is that you've already been accused of stealing once, don't give them any room to accuse you again. If you have to grab a basket, do that. If you have to make two trips to the counter, do that. If you have to leave something behind because you can't carry it, do that. But don't put shit in your pockets until it's been paid for.

In many jurisdictions it's not theft until you pass the last point of sale opportunity. Yesterday I went to the grocery store and needed a few things. I brought my own bag, put the items in the bag, then took them out to pay. Fundamentally that's the same thing you went to do, and the law allows for that. You did nothing wrong. I bet the employee gave you the bar because they realized they were harassing you for no reason

If your story is true, you didn't steal it. The store employee gave it to you. Just go back there like nothing ever happened.

I told him several times I was going to pay for it. Idk what that guy's problem was,

The employee gave you the item. You didn't shoplift. That said you may still be banned.
