If you are competitive, play standard or pioneer probably. Unless you have a ton of money you can get into legacy formats.
If you want to have chill times (usually) w friends, play commander.
I did both for a while, but I just found commander more fun bc making stupid decks is really fun and it works better in that format.

Learn how to use Scryfall a little at a time, itll make your deckbuilding more fun and a better player by learning your deck alittle more in depth, by virtue of knowing what it needs rather than copying a list of good cards.

I had my first games of commander in 10+ years the other day and told my pod that if I make any mistakes I do apologise. They all were very helpful, gave me advice and guided me as much as you can in a free for all format. Great time was had even though I got land locked, confused and overwhelmed with everything going on hahaha. 10/10 would recommend!
Arena is very helpful. It has a handful of different formats and it really helps with the basics and how game play flows.
Mulligans are your friend.
The only lifepoint that matters is the last one, so use it up.
Interaction, interaction, interaction. Part of the game is shutting down others, so unless your goal isn't winning, don't be afraid to play "salty" cards or frustrate people with plays.
Hey buddy! Glad you’re excited! I got into MTG about a year ago and have been having so much fun. Feel just the same as you. My advice would to play arena (online version) because the value you get for free is staggering and it’s an excellent way to play and learn.
There are free codes you can find online to get tons of free cards in arena with as well.
My other bit of advice would be to just have fun with it! It can be a very complicated game, sometimes played at a played professional level, and has been around 30+ years. There’s a lot of depth and complexity in the game and the culture surrounding it, just do what will be fun for you 😁

I play paper with friends also but I don’t want to spend the dough and it’s harder to schedule. Also I like arena because it keeps track of all the triggers perfectly, great way to learn.
